i live in front of a funeral service. never been scared of it growing up, despite it being literally in front of my window. and this will sound dumb but ibarely ever saw any activity there, its not neglected though. but today i saw a car parked in front. it was big, and i could see a massive casket in the back with flowers on top of it and men were in the ccar wearing black shades and balck suits. idk if this is disrespectful to say but it felt like a movie experience. bc like i said, we rarely saw any type of activity there.

HASO “Evidence.”

Still working on the trial arc, and sorry I am late in posting. I had to go to work at seven and am trying to write in between helping guests. 

CREDIT and a THANK YOU to one of my amazing discord community members Eddi, who has been working for the last few months on the audio visual and transcript logs seen here. I did not write them, Eddi wrote them an was kind enough to let me use them in this story. I loved it and thought it brought a lot of authenticity to the story by bringing in an outside voice. 

WARNING: GRAPHIC blood, gore, and bodily mutilation. The Steel eye project development is VERY horrible, so don’t read if that is something that bothers you. 

It was a beautiful day.

The sky was a bright eggshell blue stratified with only the occasional cirrus cloud highlighting the sky with a touch of distant white. The sun was bright though the temperature was moderate only in the mid eighties.

Swimmers could be seen as distant pinpoints of light and froth on the surface of lake Geneva. Voices echoed up from the city coerced mostly by the purring of hover-car engines.

Towering white buildings rose high into the sky adding height instead of width to a city that had not grown outside its own borders for the past thousand years other than to go up.

Itw as a more environmentally efficient way to build, and left the countryside untouched by the scars of infrastructure and humanity.

Adam stared out the window for a long moment wishing for the peaceful embrace of the skies and the roaring of a jet engine. A soft whimper at his leg, and he looked down to see Waffles sitting at his heel, her head tilted back to look up at him. WHen he didn’t immediately respond to her she whined again and scooted closer, her paws making soft clicking sounds on the wood flooring below.

Finally he reached down and scratched her behind the ears.

She could sense his agitation, and it was clear that she didn’t much like it.

He couldn’t blame her.

He didn’t like it either. He sighed and turned his head away from the do and he window, back to the mirror in front of which he now stood. He didn’t see himself.

The man in the mirror was tall, straight backed with sharply trimmed and styled hair, jaw squared and raised. Both eyes were green though one expanded and contracted like the appriture of a camera. The expression on the man’s face was stern and unyielding.

He looked…. Like his father.

He had never seen much of a resemblance between them, but now he could certainly see it.

It didn’t help that the stars on his uniform seemed to add an extra ten years to his age.

With a soft sigh, he pulled his captain’s cap down snuggly onto his head and whistled low for his dog.

She fell into a perfect heel at his side, and he clipped the leash onto her colla.

Her black service vest was strapped on tight with a pair of doggie saddlebags on either side carrying water bottles. Waffles always liked having a job to do, and a little extra work would help to keep her relaxed during the trial rather than antsy.

She was going to have to stay very still for a very long time for the next few days.

“Ready girl.”

Her tail thumped against the floor at his voice.

“At least that makes one of us.”

He transferred her elash to his left end, though he didn’t technically need it, and led her out of the bedroom and into the large living room. It was a lot of hotel room for just one man. He would have been fine enough with a double queen personally, but he supposed if the UNSC was paying there was no reason to argue otherwise.

It felt strange, going to a hotel on the UNSC’s Dime to testify against the UNSC in one of the biggest trials of the century.

His stomach churned.

Waffles nosed his hand.

Dr Krill floated down from his examination of the chandelier, “I admire human artistry, but pragmatism is still my preferred way of living.” he motioned around the room, “A bit opulent.”

Adam nodded his agreement, “You can say that again. I haven’t slept on a bed that big in my life.” In all honesty, he was trying to keep his mind off of what was to come. He didn’t really care about the bed and certainly didn’t know if he had ever slept in a bed that large.

He sort of doubted it, he was in the UNSC after all.

A knock came on the door and he turned reaching for the handle and pulling it open. The driver from yesterday was waiting for him, his suit pristine. He bowed slightly, “The car is waiting for you, sir.”

He nodded, and motioned the other man to lead the way.

The man nodded and thanked him, stepping down the hall and leading them down into the lobby. They got a lot of looks as they made their way down, most likely because of krill, though his uniform might have caught some attention.

He was led out towards the car and slid into the back seat, suddenly surprised to find that he wasn’t alone.

“Admiral Kelly!”

“Good morning, Adam.”

“What are you doing here.”

“I am here to witness the trial. UNSC representatives thought it would be best if some of the newer brass came to oversee proceedings.”

He quickly looked out the window, suddenly remembering which side of the conflict this was on.

A hand rested on his arm, “I’m not here to make you feel bad about your decision, Admiral. You’re doing what needs to be done.”

He sighed and nodded, “I… thank you ma’am.”

“You sure this is something you are ready for.”

He paused and then shook his head, “No… I’m not ready, and I never will be.” She went to open her mouth but he stopped her, “But I’m the only one we have, so I will do what it takes.”

The car went silent as it slowly accelerated into the early morning traffic.

It was going to be a very long day.

Admiral Kelly turned to look at Krill speaking with him quietly while Adam looked out the window.

He wasn’t in the mood for talking right now though he knew how odd that was.

His stomach continued to churn as they drove through the streets heading towards the outskirts of the city where the Geneva court had been built just over 200 years ago.

The last buildings on the outskirts of town  went by and their first view of the court appeared in the car window. It was made in the classic greco-roman style with large white pillars and sloped rooftop and carvings on the top that depicted all the deities of justice ever conceived by historial religion, all cast and depicted in marble.

The thoroughfare up to the building was long and wide with a decorative reflecting pool at the center and a set of daunting steps leading up to the ornate front doors.

The grounds were meticulously kept with hedges shrub and flowering bushes, with what must have been miles and miles of water features and fountains off to the side.

It was a beautiful location, and it seemed that visitors found it a nice spot to rest while they enjoyed touring the sites.

He didn’t see much in the beauty today.

This was the UN supreme court, and the history of Geneva made this place hallowed in ways that made the court case for today all the more poignant.

The car pulled to a stop before the doors and a few gloved attendants stepped forward sharply dressed and opened the doors with almost militaristic precision as Admiral Vir and Admiral Kelly stepped out.

Waffles followed at his heels

He knew as soon as he stepped onto the marble steps that he wanted to leave, an the only thing that kept him there was the memory of those faces…. All the people counting on him back at the house, all the people who had never been given a chance to recover like he had.

He took a deep breath and ford himself up the steps and towards the front doos where a group of people were already congregating.

There were a few reporters there, without cameras, waiting to attend in the audience and record the proceedings for their news stories and daytime television. A few of them snapped discrete photos of him as he passed and was led through the wide double doors into the expansive inner hallway with a beautifully muraled ceiling and a line of decorative plants down the side.

Voices echoed inside the building, rising up around him to bounce off the marble.

The voices themselves were indistinct and difficult to understand as he made his way further into the room.

Men in suits lined the walls.

He eyed them critically wondering if any of them happened to be the defence.

A hand was placed on his shoulder, and he quickly turned to eye another attendant, who had evidently been trying to get his attention, “Right this way sir.”

He nodded and was led through the halls and into a nearby antichamber.

A wand was passed over his body.

“Please hold out your arm , sir.”

He did as ordered and watched as his forearm implant was temporarily deactivated. 

“The room is completely radio proof, sir. No signals go in or out. If you must make a call, I urge you to take it during the court recess.”

“Understood.”

“Please step inside and sit on the second row on the right side behind the prosecution.

He did as ordered, and stepped into another wide curving room.

It was much bigger than he would have thought, two stories high with amphitheater seats, and a massive curving desk at the front where nine Geneva court judges would be seated on their entrance.

There was no jury.

The Geneva court judges would be the jury for trial at this time.

Law practices had changed a lot since world war III but there was still some semblance of the old ways that still lingered on.

He took his seat, waffles grumbling softly as he slid onto the ground beside him.

Two people in suits followed him inside one in a dark blue suit and brown shoes, the other in pinstriped balck.

The one in blue was a woman, dressed sharply, her hair pulled back into a bun so tight you could have strummed out a tune on the hairs. She paused next to Adam and held out a hand, “Admiral Vir, we spoke over the phone.”

“Ms. Trevor.”

She nodded and motioned to the man, “And my partner Mr. Jackson. I trust you understand your purpose here today?”

“Yes Ma’am.”

Jackson lifted his head, “Our case here is solid, admiral. This case isn’t about who is going to be punished for what happened, but about how long they will be punished, not to mention it is likely to set up some new legislation for the ethical creation and use of military hardware. Once we are done, something like this is unlikely to ever happen again.”

He wasn’t entirely sure he believed that, but he nodded and let them take their seats in the desk before him.

Waffles whimpered and prodded at his hands with her nose.

He stroked a hand over her big pointed ears.

The courtroom filled up within the next hour, and, Looking across the room, he saw a line of men and women sitting on the second row of the defence. Something about them put him on edge.

He had a feeling they were the scientists.

They were the ones who had developed the steel eye armor.

“All rise! For the honorable Geneva court judges!”

The entire room took to their feet as the nine judges filed out of a back chamber and stepped onto the floor. All of them wore traditional black robes with white collars as had been tradition for nearly thousand of years. They took their seats with a mass shuffling.

“Please be seated.”

The room shuffled back into place.

The head judge,at the center of the table leaned forward.

“On this day June 24, 4024 we open the Geneva Court case of The People VS UNSC Biomechanics Division. the court will begin by hearing opening statements from the council.”

Council for the prosecution stood, shuffling her papers once before stepping up to the lectern.

“Honorable judges and members of the court, today we are here to present evidence against a faction of the UNSC scientific division for gross ethical violations, torture, and pruposeful endangerment of human life. Evidence suggests over 29 killed, over 21 critically injured, maimed, or permanently crippled, and over 61 with lasting mental trauma. This is not counting over 50 Steel eye soldiers coerced without prior knowledge, into participation in the program, 30 of which are now deceased 15 of which have lasting mental trauma, and five that, while functional, still feel the effects today. Today we will be presenting, written documents, video recordings, and audio files from prior testing as well as first hand witnesses of both the testing and the war as well as expert witness from the scientist who read and compiled the files before trial. What was done to these men and women constitute as war crimes and their victims deserve compensation and closure for what was done to them.”

She stepped back from the podium and nodded.

The defence stood and made their way to the podium in turn, “Your honors, and members of the court, while it is true that some unfortunate incidents happened during testing and development of the steel eye project, there is ample evidence to prove that none of these men or women were coerced against their will into participation. All subjects were volunteer and duly informed before proceedings began. Furthermore, scientific ethics had not advanced far enough at the time to cover weather or not what they were doing was an ethical violation. The Defence is not asking for complete vindication for the accused, but the sum of what happens is surely less than war crimes.” 

They took their seat.

Adam wasn’t a lawyer, but he knew which opening statement he liked more. Now maybe he was biased, but certainly he felt that one presented greater amounts of evidence than the other. Of course it was up to the prosecution to show evidence that would convince the judges, beyond a reasonable doubt, that these men and women were guilty.

He listened to some more speaking, half falling asleep and assuming maybe this would be as bad as he thought it would when one of the prosecution stepped back up to the podium.

“The prosecution presents time stamped dated and logged evidence to the court for consideration. The first testing log we wish to present is from the eighteenth of October 4016 and overseen by Dr. Tato Nkosi written as log number 23.” 

Experimental Log #023:

So far we have not experimented with a human subject, All the sample tests and simulations indicate that there should be no interference with normal function nor create any feedback loops that could induce seizures. This is the first human testing that we will be doing. We have noticed that the animal testing resulted in significant irritation and irrational behavour from the subjects, We however suspect this was because they were unawares of the reason for the implantations.

The subject is unconscious for the process of implantation to prevent movement.

The subject reacted violently to the implant, removing it in a highly violent manner while screaming and trying to injure any nearby scientists. We expected some level of resistance, but this indicates far more sensitivity than expected. Further testing will be required.

“The council for the prosecution wishes to present the audio/visual log.” A light flickers on as a video clip begins reeling.

Audiovisual Log Transcript:

The subject wakes suddenly, seeming to be woken by extreme pain. Screaming almost instantly and scrabbling at implant on their hand and wrist. Subject seems to be attempting to remove the implant. One of the scientists attempts to calm the subject only to be beaten by the subject who continues screaming. The scientist retreats from the subject just as the subject finally removes the test implant by ripping it from the subjects skin, tearing with it the subjects local nervous system along with large sections of the subjects musculature and ligaments. Seeming relieved at the lack of contact with the implant, the subject sinks to its knees. The subject is losing significant amount of blood, though we suspect the subject is unaware of this as large sections of the nervous system is still attached to the implant. The subject appears to be in shock as it observes its ruined lower arm and hand. The subject has resumed screaming and is now trying to get the scientists attention to fix its ruined lower arm and hand. The subject is sedated and arm treated. The recording ends here. 

Adam throws a hand up over his face feeling bile rise into his mouth at the image seared into his brain. Muscle and ligament dangling uselessly against a steel eye prototype. He felt a bit lightheaded but takes a deep breath in and out to calm his breathing. All around the room there are gasps of shock and disgust. A few people stand to leave the room unable to witness any more.”

The council steps forward, “This was the first log in a recorded series of proceeding logs with similar effects. We know in experimentation that accidents happen all the time, and we might have considered forgiveness if the experimentation had stopped here. Clearly implementation on human test subjects was not ready, as evidenced by the animal’s discomfort. Perhaps if they had stopped here, some measure of understanding might have been allowed. But they continued past this point with full knowledge that this sort of catastrophic event could happen. This test subject will never regain full use of his hand. Instead of stopping the experiment like hey should, the scientists determined that the use of painkillers was in order to make the subject operational. For this the prosecution calls expert witness Dr. Alexander Gladstone to the witness stand.”

On the bench to his side, a man stands slicking back his salt and pepper hair as he moves to sit in the witness stand and is sworn in.

“Dr. Gladstone, tell us a little of your credentials.”

“Of course, I received my PHD in Biomechanical interface and Engineering as well as an additional PHD in Mechanised robotics. I have worked as the head scientist for the UNSC testing division for nearly five years now after my predecessor quit. I helped to re-engineer this project under Iron eye as a step forward from the Steel eye project in a more controlled and ethical environment. I am also the scientists who reviewed these logs and compiled them for analysis today.”

“Thank you Dr. Now, may I ask why these scientists would have chosen to implement a drug dosage?”

“To understand why they had to do this, you must also understand the steel eye project itself. Steel eye was designed to enhance the strength, speed and durability of the wearer. We already have exo suits designed for use in factory and industrial settings, however the main issue we run into in a combat setting is that the machine responds too slow. The nodes detect electrical impulses from the muscles and then have to fire following that meaning the subject has already begun moving almost seconds in advance of the machine. Steel eye was created to integrate the machine directly into the body to intercept nerve impulses before the muscles even fire, thus making the wearer faster, and the augment making them stronger. To do this you have to make a direct interface with the nervous system. They first implemented small microfivers which would wrap themselves around the nerves in question to detect electrical signals. These were designed to cluster primarily along the spine but have additional nodes in the major muscle groups. However, direct stimulation of a nerve or nerve cluster sends signals to the brai nthat are interpreted as…. Unbelievable agony, which is likely the agitation that they were seeing in the animal test subjects. However, with a high enough drug dosage, you can mitigate these effects, or distract the brain enough to keep the wearer functional for some time.”

He sat back in his seat.

“And in iron eye, how did you get around this problem?”

“Subdermal implants that do not require direct contact with the nerve endings themselves.”

“And does Iron eye cause any significant damage to the wearer?”

“No sir, the only danger is an infection of the implants, but that is with almost any implanted medical devise.”

“The subjects have no pain.”

“A general soreness that goes away within two to three days.”

“So in my understanding it is clear that there were alternatives to their original course of action. They could have pulled back and tried to implement a way to mitigate the pain rather than mask it with drug dosages?”

“Certainly.”

“But that isn’t what they did.”

“No.”

“The prosecution presents Transcript 27 to the court for viewing.” 

Experimental log #27:

We have begun testing various drugs to suppress the pain, this test is with acetaminophen, commonly referred to as Codeine. 

As per usual the subject was implanted while unconscious and atop this it was given a high dose of codeine prior to it awaking.

It appears that while the subject was capable of withstanding the pain from the implant for a longer period of time than our previous subjects However the subject clearly seemed to suffer increasing mental instability as the sensations returned, culminating in the subject violently trying to destroy the implant. Learning from prior experiments and in an attempt to reduce harm to the scientists, the subject was left alone while it was in this state and no attempt was made to aid the subject.

Adam turned his head away unable to stomach what was coming next. His hands were sweating terribly. He felt cold and weak. He had seen horrible things in war and in his time, but watching this… .watching steel eye. It was just too much.

His mouth had gone dry, and his skin was hot as if he had a fever.

The dog nosed his hand but he barely acknowledged her.

Audio-visual log transcript:

The transcript begins once the Codeine begins to wear off. 

The subject begins by itching at the area around the implant, the reaction is far less violent than the prior subjects. After several minutes of ever more irritated scratching and aggressive tugging at the implant and plaintive noises the subject began to violently bash the implant against the wall. Growing ever more violent with the abuse of the implant. This continues till the test implant is mangled and ruined with the subject pulling the mangled chunks of metal off their skin, this however seems not to alleviate the subjects pain and irritation. This is likely due to the destruction of the implant not removing the interfacing needles The subject continued to scratch and pull at its skin, the plaintive noises slowly becoming screams of pain. This action continued without interruption from the scientists till the subject had torn most of the skin of its arm and taken chunks out of its musculature, the subject finally passed out from pain or blood loss after several minutes of self mutilation. 

The room spun around him, and he took a few long, deep breaths hoping that it would stop.

He wast sure he could survive another few hours of this.

He wasn’t sure at all

Chapter 06

Bledsoe bolted up on her cot after being startled awake by the wailing siren.  She froze, which always happened when she heard a blaring siren, as she was taken back to a time two years ago when she was with the anti-counterfeiting department.  She and her team had been investigating a counterfeiting ring operating within the country, and after months of investigation, surveillance, and undercover work, they had discovered the base of operations for the group and were prepared to strike.

Bledsoe and the rest of the strike team were huddled together inside a van a short distance from the sight as the team leader gave out final instructions and made coordinations with local law enforcement for backup, having not informed them of the raid previously as they suspected corruption and worried that someone within the local departments would tip off their target.  Once the team leader finished the final brief, the driver quickly moved for the base.

Once the vehicle stopped, the side door opened and the agents, in full body armor, quickly exited and moved to the door of the house serving as the counterfeiters base.  As a few agents scattered around the house to cover possible exits, the team leader moved to the front door.

“This is the United States Secret Service,” the team leader bellowed out, “you’re under arrest!  Come out with your hands up!”  The agents paused and listened for activity, hearing nothing the team leader turned to an agent armed with a shotgun and gestured him forward.  The agent moved ahead of the others, with Bledsoe right behind him, and blew the hinges off of the door.  The agent then moved aside for Bledsoe to kick down the door and move in.

Her marksmanship already well known at this point, Bledsoe had been selected to move in first and secure the area.  She entered and immediately checked every corner of the front room before announcing it clear and moving toward the next portion.  The agents had been briefed that the most likely location for the actual operation was the basement, as they moved toward the staircase that would lead them there, the door swung open and two men brandishing submachine guns emerged.

Bledsoe quickly brought them down with three well-placed shots and prepared to move to the door.  What none of the agents had seen was the person hiding in the backroom adjacent to the basement staircase.  Without moving from his position, he fired two shots at Bledsoe.  The counterfeiters had armed themselves with armor-piercing rounds, this became obvious to Bledsoe and the other team members when the fired rounds pierced her vest and exited through her chest.

Bledsoe’s body went cold immediately as her legs gave out and she fell to the ground.  Dropping her weapon, she instinctively brought her hands over the exit wounds and began to go into shock.  As this happened, she registered some of the sounds around her.  She felt herself being dragged by her ankles away from gunfire and fleetingly saw agents moving down the stairs.  When she stopped moving, she was outside on top of the grass in the front yard.  She could see two agents looking down on her as they removed her vest and reacted dramatically to the sight of her wounds.

Immediately afterwards, she saw the blinking lights and registered the sound of the siren of an ambulance pulling up and shortly thereafter felt hands firmly pressing down on her chest just above where her hands rested.  Her lips trembled involuntarily, as if she were shivering, and she became aware of a doctor attempting to communicate with her.  She could hear her talking to her, but couldn’t understand any of the words being spoken.  Bledsoe tried to respond, but couldn’t.  To her immense fear, she began to feel herself drifting away as if falling asleep.

As she began to balck out, she felt a sensation of warmth in her chest and assumed the worst.  The last thing she could remember thinking was, “please, not now.”

Bledsoe hated sirens and the memory they conjured, but she was disciplined enough that the freezing only ever lasted a few seconds.  She snapped out of her trans and strapped on her shoulder holster before running outside to find out what was going on.  Even though night had fallen, the heat and humidity outside were enough to make someone long for winter.  The siren drowned out the nerve-wracking sound of the Cicadas, but also weighed heavily on Agent Bledsoe.  She made her way to the source of the noise.  Despite the uneven terrain and oppressive heat, she was fit enough that running there wasn’t a problem.

The compound was riddled with activity and orders being shouted.  Searchlights panned the facility.  Doors burst open spilling out armed men running in all directions.  The sound of guard dogs barking added to the prevailing environment of pandemonium.  It uncomfortably reminded her of the fiasco at the pavilion, she wondered if this sort of thing followed “Clark Kent” everywhere he went.  She looked around and saw Taylor running out of the facility holding a handkerchief over his nose.

“Taylor!” she called out running over to him, “What’s going on out here?”

“When did you slip it to him?” Taylor asked removing the handkerchief for a moment to speak.

“Slip who what?” Bledsoe asked genuinely confused.

“When did you slip your friend Clark Kent whatever he used to get out of the cuffs?”

“You mean,” Bledsoe asked amazed and ignoring Taylor’s accusation, “he’s escaped?!”

“Of course he has,” Taylor said again lowering the handkerchief, “wasn’t that your plan the entire time?”

“What’s your problem?!” Bledsoe said frantically, “Just tell me what happened!”

“Not that it matters to the accomplice,” Taylor started, removing and reapplying the handkerchief, “but after his lawyer left I went back in to try to get him to flush out his accomplice…”

“You didn’t waste time asking him about me did you?!” Bledsoe angrily interrupted.

“Believe me it crossed my mind,” Taylor answered spitefully, “but I was trying to get the other assassin.  He kept giving me smart mouth answers, so I went over to beat it out of him.  The bastard had freed one of his hands and broke my nose before he knocked me out, got the rest of his irons off and made his way out.”

“He broke your nose again?” Bledsoe asked with a hint of a giggle.

“Shut your goddamn mouth bitch!” he said angrily, “and get the hell out of my sight!  So help me God, I will see you ousted from the Service if it takes me the rest of my life!”

Taylor’s words pierced Bledsoe to her core.  All she could do was stand and spitefully glare at him, her eyes seeming to penetrate his soul.  They soon had enough of their confrontation and felt they had more important matters to attend to.  Bledsoe turned her back and hustled off into the darkness.  Taylor muttered something and hurried off toward the guards securing the entry gate.

Bledsoe stood where she was and looked out at where Taylor had gone.  She was no traitor, but she knew Taylor and how determined and stubborn he could be when he had his mind set on something.  She had been content with knowing that at least one of the murderers was in custody, but now that he was gone she couldn’t take it.  She wasn’t going to just leave and go on suspension.  Knowing that she would be a complete wreck under those conditions, she decided that she would leave in the morning as planned, but not before doing a little sightseeing.

“Why can’t we see him?” one of Odin’s pursuers yelled out, “His jumpsuit should be showing up in the light.”

“If he was wearing it,” came a reply, “the guy knocked out his interrogator, broke into the storage locker, and cleared out all his personals.  He’s probably back in that all black getup he was wearing.”

Back in the same clothes he wore at the pavilion and clutching an incendiary grenade he had nabbed from the detention facility, Odin disappeared into the shadows as he ran around the perimeter of the facility to the east end opposite the entry gate, throwing off his pursuers long enough to make his way down to the sea.

He surveyed the night sky, taking in the stars and their positions, before looking back at the detention facility.  After scanning the shoreline for landmarks, he pulled the pin on the grenade, turned away from the water, and threw the grenade as far as he could before creeping into the water leaving minimal ripples.

“Look over there,” one of the search party members called out after the grenade had detonated, shooting flames into the air, “head for the flames!”

The search party converged to the flames as if they had been moths, but found nothing.  Taylor showed up on the scene just after the advanced guard.

“Where is he?!” Taylor asked already knowing the answer.

“You tell me sir,” one Marine said, “we just got here and you know as much as we do about what happened.”

Taylor paused for a moment and scanned the area, looking for any sign of where Odin had gone.  He knew the night sky favored the man on the run, so he figured the best thing to do was remove that advantage.

“Tell the choppers to have their lights on,” Taylor barked out, “I want a perimeter set up with a five mile radius from where we’re standing!  Do you have generators?”

“Affirmative sir,” a Marine said, “we could have searchlights set up all along the perimeter.”

“Do it!” Taylor instructed, “We’ve got to catch this bastard before he has a chance to get anywhere near a car, boat, or plane.  The only way he’s getting off this island is in a shark’s belly or with an armed guard escort.”

“You heard him!” a Marine captain shouted out, “we need a full perimeter with a five-mile radius from here!  We need searchlights and generators along there and I want guards and dogs there before I can recite the Corps motto!  Move!”

Choppers and jeeps scrambled in all directions.  Marines and MPs moved all over the area setting up the perimeter and doing everything humanly possible to catch their mark.  Searchlights were set up at several key points along the perimeter that had been established by Taylor and the others in a matter of minutes, and everyone living anywhere near the bay knew that something was going on.

The helicopters continued to swarm around, their lights panning the ground and the silvery surface of water searching anxiously for any sign of life.  But it seemed even the scorpions had gone into hiding with all the commotion.  Odin had proven himself to be dangerous at the pavilion, and the details of his escape and what he had been able to accomplish prior to leaving the facility left all who knew about him concerned by what else he was capable of.

After the perimeter was set up, MPs and other Marines were sent from the different points and made their way toward the Detention Facility, checking every scrap of ground along the way.  No stone was left unturned, and the search continued unrelentingly.  Every different spot returned the same result…no trace.

When I woke up this morning after having had a reasonable nights sleep, something was amiss. As normal I checked my watch and found it to be 0800hrs , but shortly afterwards when perusing the news on my phone, the time read 0705hrs , I was a little puzzled but it didnt take too long for the penny to drop. Portugal is in the same time zone as the UK and so yesterday when crossing from Spain we had gained an extra hour. Hurrah ! First job of the day was housekeeping, i.e. water , waste and rubbish. From research I knew there to be a state of the art commercial services just on the outskirts of the town . The facility was fully automated and even had a jet wash facility with a high rise platform so one could clean the roof of your van. I didn't feel this necessary as mother nature had been periodically jet washing the van over several days and the roof was in pretty good order. The services were time limited to four minutes for 2 Euros which included balck waste and fresh water refill. Team work was deployed with Rhian on fresh water detail and me on black waste. We were successful in completing both tasks within the time limit . Tea and medals all round. Next on the list was to travel to our next destination namely Aveiro which was about an hour away on non toll roads(more of which later) and which had been described as the Venice of Portugal. As we were arriving in the town we stumbled across a Lidl . Provisions were generally in short supply so we made a pit stop and after a light snack made our way to a car park within easy walking distance of the town centre. Aveiro was a pleasant town with a small canal system running through its centre, I think the Portuguese tourist department had been a little ambitious or even mischievous in describing it as a Portuguese Venice but there was a nice ambience , boat rides up and down the canals on powered traditional wooden craft once used for harvesting seaweed for fertilising the land. Now a little about the toll road system here in Portugal which quite frankly is an absolute nightmare and ridiculously over complex. My so far limited experience of the normal A roads is that they are of very poor quality , over congested with heavy traffic and HGVs and that the infrastructure appears to have been very much neglected to encourage use of the toll motorways. Fair enough. France and Spain have a very easy and effective system whereby you approach a manned or unmanned Peage(toll area) pull up to the machine , take a ticket and when you leave the road, insert said ticket into machine, insert debit card in machine, no PIN required , 10 seconds, job done. Portugal has a much better hi tech modern way which uses ANPR(automated number plate recognition) cameras on gantries across the motorway which scan every vehicle number plate passing beneath. As a road user in a foreign registered vehicle you have the following options

This is the easiest option for foreign visitors, especially those driving from Spain. It can be purchased at an Easy Toll Welcome Point without having to leave the vehicle, and it associates a credit card (Mastercard, Visa or Maestro) to the vehicle’s license plate. There is sign up cost of 0.74 € and each journey has an administrative cost of 0.32 €.

!!) Because the credit card is linked to the vehicle, the membership needs to be cancelled, otherwise, the same credit card can be charged in the case of a new customer renting the same vehicle.

Aimed at longer stays or frequent visitors, you can rent a temporary transponder device for €6 for the first week then €1.50 per week plus a refundable deposit of €27.50. You have to register a credit card with the system and tolls are automatically debited from the card. It is valid for a maximum of 90 days and can be used on electronic toll roads

You may say , why use the toll roads but as previously stated many of the roads are in very poor order and the extra distance, fuel etc, make it very difficult and time consuming to avoid them. Suffice to say I visited a Post Office to purchase a prepaid ticket and expect a lengthy legal battle with the Portuguese authorities on our return to the UK ! I read an article stating that the Portuguese tourism industry are lobbying the government to make changes to the system as it is significantly affecting visitor numbers and I for one would certainly have to think very seriously about returning after this experience. Anyway using our newly purchased toll ticket we made our way about an hour south to a nice little beach aire at Praia Lavos. More of the same coastline really, big dunes , big seas. So far no plan for tomorrow

As white people we have to do the work, because it is us as a collective that are at fault. It is our histories that have led to the level of white supremacy that allow a police officer to kneel on a man's neck for almost 9 minutes slowly murdering him on video. This week I have been quiet on my grid, but active on my stories amplifying the voices of balck people. I have been listening, learning, watching, researching, reading and educating myself about the problems and issues faced by black people due to systemic racism. I have been having difficult conversations with my kids, talking to them about how white people need to be held accountable for the racism that exists across the world. Talking to them about the problems that black american and british people face due to the British empires colonisation of the African continent and the subsequent slave trade. We have been researching historically important black people such as Mary Seacole, Guion Stewart Bluford Jr, Rosa Parks, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King, Malcolm X. Instead of learning about the Roman Empire we took to Google to learn about the Sahelian kingdoms. I have explained to them how if Theo ever gets his dream car, he will never have to fear being stopped by the police due to the colour of his skin. How Ella if she becomes a vet won't have her intellect questioned because of the colour of her skin. They are 10 & 11, but even if your children are younger you need to start this conversation and there are some amazing books and resources for younger children. Google is your friend. The article, 'portrayal of Minorities in the Film, Media and Entertainment Industries’, by Yurii Horton, Raagen Price and Eric Brown greatly developed my understanding of the historical implications of the misrepresentation of minorities in the film industry.

The fact that the first black owned film company was not created until 1916, exemplifies how long white film makers controlled the narrative of black characters without the consultation of black filmmakers. In other words black people in America have only had a say in how they are represented in the last 104 years, and when they did begin to have a say in the form of companies like Lincoln, their films did not achieve the status of mainstream until more recently in industry history. This could be a factor as to why ideological legacies of colonialism and race based stereotypes are still present into the film industry. I had hoped to watch the first movie produced by Lincoln Motion Picture Company, ‘The realsiation of a Negro ‘5 Ambition’, however resarch suggets the film has been lost. This issue in itself emphasises the struggle this company faced to stay afloat in the overtly white supremest era of 1910 - 1920. The birth of a nation is considered art and is immortalised in American film history, while the first ever film featuring black characters as people rather than caricatures has been disregarded so much so, that it is completely lost. Although i can't say much about the representation of black people in this film,  i have drawn some inferences from the articles description of it, that contradict the articles claim that balck people played non- stereotyped roles. I definitely do agree that this representation was far more positive than all films representing black people at the ime, because it contradicts the stereotype that black people are uneducated by making the lead a black university graduate. However, the plot of siad graduate ‘getting an admirable position from a white racist businessman for saving the man's daughter’,  participates in the perpetuation of the ‘notion that black’ characters ‘can only be good when they are serving the interests of white folks a stereotype that i had not thought about before reading literature by Hooks. The article also suggests that the film attempts to ‘show that Afro-Americans were allied militarily with Anglo-Americans’, which only further supports my inference. In truth, black people fought for a white surpresmist country, but they were never considered as allies. They fought separately, were still considered as second class citizens even after their service. To suggest that black and white men fought side by side as allies would simply not be the truth. Even the military was segregated:

‘ On May 24, 1916, Johnson was ambitious enough to create his own movie company and became the president of Lincoln Motion Picture Company. This was the first movie company organized by black filmmakers. The first movie produced by Lincoln Motion Picture Company was The Realization of a Negro '5 Ambition and was released in mid 1916. It was the first film produced in America that featured blacks in dramatic non-stereotyped roles. (Sampson 1977; 2) It portrayed a Tuskegee graduate leaving the South and getting an admirable position from a white racist businessman for saving the man's daughter. The second production was titled A Trooper of Troop K and was released in January of 1917. It attempted to build race pride by "showing that Afro-Americans were allied militarily with Anglo-Americans." (Rhines 1996; 21) Lincoln Motion Picture Company was an all-black company and was the first company to produce films portraying blacks as real people with real lives. The article discusses the first hollywood film featuring an all-black cast, Hearts in Dixie, which i intend to watch as part of my research. Interestingly the film was produced for FOX, which even in modern day has been accused of intentionally mis-represenating black men who died at the hand of police officers to justify their killing and the officers excessive use of force. The article suggests that motifs of minority misrepresentation have been present in Fox’s publications from the beginning. The article discusses the films ‘most problematic figure, Stepin Fetchit’. Stepin Fetchit’s character played a significant role in the creation of the deropgatry image of a ‘good nigger’ used to reinforce white dominace over black people, by showing images of an uneducated black man that ‘konws his place’. Even his name, which derives ‘from a racehorse that he won money on, Step and Fetch, carries connotations of subservience.

The first Hollywood film to feature an all-black cast was Hearts in Dixie, which was produced in 1929 and directed by Paul Sloane for Fox. "This film introduced to wider audiences, one of the film industry's most polemic figures ever -Stepin Fetchit." (http://www.moderntimes.comlpalace/black/introduction.htm) In the film, the audience is introduced to the faithful black plantation workers, toiling hard in the fields all day and relaxing at night by singing and dancing. Stepin Fetchit typifies the lazy, but good natured slave, unwilling to work, but forgiven for his errant ways. When the white boss playfully" kicks Fetchit in the rear-end, Fetchit grins broadly and winks slyly at the audience. This is an example of the typical screen 'darkie." Fetchit, a 'black clown," is a 'good nigger," lazy and shiftless, yet "all right at heart. Most importantly, he "knows his place. (Noble 1969 [1948]; 50) Fetchit's depiction of blacks is extremely degrading and demeaning. Blacks across the country were presumed to fit Fetchit's stereotype of being lazy, stupid, foolish, and yet well intentioned. For those who had never encountered black people before, but had seen a Stepin Fetchit film, they were left with a warped, skewed view of blacks by Fetchit's performance. -chapter 1

Even the roles that blacks have in films produced today are sometimes reminiscent of those degrading "darkie" roles that Stepin Fetchit played so well. In the recent comedy, Nothing to Lose, starring Tim Robbins and Martin Lawrence, it is abundantly clear that Hollywood has yet to abandon those negative stereotypes of blacks first created in the early 20th century. Robbins plays Nick Beam, a nice ad-executive, who loves his wife dearly. He is "the quintessential white guy, a square straight and narrow, while Lawrence plays the "wise-ass, street-smart black guy." In the film, the white guy lectures the black guy about the immorality of armed robbery ("You are a bad person") and the black guy ridicules the white guy for his wimpiness ("You don't have the respect of your woman"). The Hollywood tradeoff is evident. The "white guy gets to be virtuous and the black guy gets to be cool." Throughout the whole movie, Lawrence plays the part of the court jester sidekick to "Robbins' lanky aristocrat, trading full humanity and dignity for sassing rights." Lawrence essentially plays the part of a modern day Stepin Fetchit. In one scene, Lawrence jumps from the car and dances around comically screaming "My ass done fall asleep I dint know an ass could fall asleep!" (http://www.salonmagazine.som/july97/entertainment/nothing970718.html) Lawrence's character perpetuates the existent negative stereotypes of blacks as buffoons and yet no one seems to notice or mind. - chapter 1

The notion that a movie mainly featuring fictional characters and robots could be an example of coded racism had never really occurred to me.

Negative stereotypes of minorities in film can be found in Hollywood as recently as May 19, 1999, with the release of "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace." Many of the extraterrestrial creatures have ethnically tinged caricatures. One character, Jar Jar Binks, has created quite a conflict. An amphibious creature with floppy ears surprisingly similar to Rastafarian dreadlocks, he has a wide nose, bulging eyes, and fat lips, speaks in a Caribbean-style pidgin English and acts as the stupid, bumbling, good-for-nothing sidekick to the Jedi Knights. "Wall Street film critic Joe Morgenstern called Jar Jar 'a Rastafarian Stepin Fetchit on platform hoofs, crossed annoyingly with Butterfly Mequcen,"' a reference to a slave servant in "Gone with the Wind." Additionally, "Los Angeles Times critic Eric Harrison said the primitive tribe that Jar Jar belongs to - the Gungan - is ruled by a fat, buffoonish character, seemingly a caricature of a stereotypical African chieftain."' Media arts professor Daniel Bernadi from the University of Arizona is troubled by the role that Jar Jar plays in the movie. "'He really is sort of your 'Amos 'n' Andy,' Stepin Fetehit, loyal, bumbling colored other???. Even when he saves the day, he does it by accident, so his heroism is sort of a joke, and what makes it more problematic is he does it in the service of 'whiteness."' Leadership & Respect with Animals

I got this brain storm, and though I’d write about it too...

Since I’ve had all kinds of animals all my life..surely I’ve trained them all.

I have had dogs, parrots, parakeets, cats, guinea pigs, fishes, and the main thing with animals are..you need to talk their language, all animals learn by energy and pressure., different motions and ques. You just need to know HOW!

When I was under 20 I moved out to  U.S, I’ve always felt more to be American than Finnish..I felt so at home there than.

Yes I found myself spending time, by training the Blue and Yellow Macaw..we fell totally  in love..it came walking to my room in the mornings,  knocked on the door and climbed up to my bed and started to kiss my face..nibble at my ear rings that got all twisted .. he was so funny..and he came everywhere I went, we drove to the pet store by car and got its feed...etc,..he came by the pool when I was outside... it was my buddy, and we totally understood each other..

Well, macaws usually have 1 owner and that’s it, either they like women or men..hardly both..since it’s hard to know what sex they are you need to make an DNA test..but ., they surely choose the owner themselves.

They are like a 4 y kid that wants all your attention and does all kinds of things to get it.. if not they they do a lot of harm, destroy furniture or what ever they can get their beak to,  and it they are depressed..they pull out their feathers..yes, I have seen it too..poor things

People don’t understand the responsibility that comes along with an parrot/ animals, it needs care taking 24/7, My macaw had a room of it’s own    :)

well back to my point...

Well, as.the other parrots were jealous at the attention it got from me and they tried to mingle along, but the macaw saw it differently.. there was a  Aratinga solstitialis, that kept screaming all the time..it has a terrible noisy scream..and it was mean..tried to bite every time it got close to you.., it had this thing going one that it wanted to be close to you, but not petted..so I left it surely alone. Also  Amazona oratrix, don’t recall which amazon it was ..and a Psittacus erithacus ..since its a long time ago don’t remember that clear.

Of course there was this doberman..well guess who was taking it out and trained it as well...it comes naturally  to me , I understand and love animals to the bits..they hear me  and we communicate  with understanding.

All my parrots and parakeets was free in my house, they sat on my shoulder, went outside for a car drive, store etc..if I said them to go to bed, they went to their cage and closed the door behind them..yes..believe they did it ...and more..

I remember 1 time  I had my Baby , the name of the Parakeet with me to a grocery store when I lived in Florida..this customer service lady came to me and sais, “Mam, you have a beautiful parrot, but sorry you cannot have it in here..well surely at that time my Baby, was jumping all over the water melons ha haaa.. and I totally agreed than..oh well one funny story..of many more..

I’ve had a doberman here in Finland as well, but not my breed, I have had Cavalier King Charles spaniels, Chinese crest and now also 2 puppies that I train now....

We’ll I trained that dog, but mainly the whole family, as they are the owners..the dogs needed 2-3 times of my time and coaching the family to be a leader. All problems cleared and they are a happy family with a dog that has an perfect happy personality as a Chinese crests should have..sorry to say, but this breed is very sensitive and have a lot of misbehaving IF NOT understood!!! Easily turns into fear and aggressive attitudes if not safe.

Je ne pouvais pas attendre davantage. Aussitôt reçu, aussitôt lu. Je voulais comprendre. Je voulais savoir ce qui avait poussé Abain à agir ainsi, car pour moi il avait forcément eu de bonnes raisons pour avoir été obligé de faire autant de peine à la femme de sa vie.

Esme. J’avais hâte aussi de la retrouver et de voir sa réaction face à l’arrestation de son amour perdu.

Farah commence avec le point de vue d’Abain, puis alterne avec celui d’Esme. Cela permet de tout de suite nous captiver. J’ai aimé entrer dans la tête d’Abain et lire dans quel pétrin il s’est mis. Sa souffrance est palpable, alors qu’il ne laisse rien transparaître, pourtant en lui ça bout, ça frémit, à deux doigts d’exploser. Son manque d’Esme est invivable, il essaye de vivre avec, de la protéger du mieux qu’il peut, sans pouvoir y arriver. Il se bat lui aussi, quitte à ne plus jamais pouvoir serrer Esme dans ses bras. S’en est bouleversant.

L’heure des explications a sonné. Assez vite l’auteure va organiser la confrontation de nos amants déchus. Larmes et colère seront de mise, mais une forme de soulagement va apparaître chez Esme, comme une sorte d’apaisement de pouvoir enfin comprendre les mensonges d’Abain.

L’amour sera-t-il plus fort que toutes ces années de souffrance ? Esme pourra-t-elle pardonner Abain ? Au fil des pages, Farah nous donne la réponse à ces interrogations. Rien ne déroge à l’intensité qui unit ces deux là. Ils sont faits l’un pour l’autre que voulez-vous. Abain le dira d’ailleurs, il aime Esme plus que tout, mal sûrement mais il l’aime. Le voilà maintenant en prison, sans savoir quand il pourra sortir…

Là où l’auteure fait très fort, c’est qu’elle a réussi un joli tour de passe passe. Si dans le premier opus, Esme encaisse, se bat, tombe, et se relève, dans le second tome elle se rebelle et attaque. Esme n’est plus une victime, elle est devenue une guerrière. Une femme qui se bat avec tant de force, dont les raisons nous seront révélées plus tard dans le récit. Elle prend son destin en main et les armes en poche. Elle va aller loin, très loin, mais elle n’a plus rien à perdre, elle ne subit plus. Le moins qu’on puisse dire, est qu’autant Esme, qu’Abain, ces personnages se démarquent par leur incroyable intelligence pour survivre, coûte que coûte.

Il y aura aussi des retrouvailles: magnifiques et violentes. L’amour et la sensualité qui émanent de ces deux-là, sont magiques, de toute beauté! Les scènes érotiques sont magistrales, à l’image de la puissance de leurs sentiments: uniques: de vraies tornades ! La manière dont ils font l’amour est sauvage, parfois brutale, mais jamais dénuée d’amour. A mon sens, ces moments d’intensité charnelle sont un plus présents par rapport au premier tome, où Farah alternait son récit entre l’ installation de leur relation et leur « guerre froide ».

Je confirme mon méga crush littéraire pour Abain, qui m’a définitivement conquise avec cette suite. Le Black Boy de l’année? A ce jour c’est sans conteste pour moi. 

Les personnages secondaires sont vraiment bien travaillés. Ils apportent une autre dimension à la trame. Je ne peux pas m’empêcher d’avoir une pensée peinée pour Molly. Véritable dommage collatéral de cette histoire, comme le dira Abain. Mon dieu ce que cette femme a du souffrir. Rien à voir avec le niveau de souffrance atteint par Esme bien sûr, mais Molly se retrouve, malgré tout, comme le dindon de la farce…

Même si j’ai une légère préférence pour le tome 1, tellement bouleversant, j’ai kiffé cette suite. Elle est plus rythmée, les rebondissements s’enchaînent. Qui manipule qui ? L’auteure ne va pas ménager votre palpitant, ni vos émotions, car vous connaîtrez la réponse à cette question, qu’à la fin de cette duologie.

Mon cœur a définitivement battu plus fort pour ce roman, un coup de cœur magistral de fin d’année. Je ne suis pas la seule à la penser, mais bravo Farah pour cette magnifique romantic suspens, s’il faut la catégoriser. De l’intensité, du drama savamment dosé, des personnages si puissants et une trame orchestrée de mains de maîtres : il ne pouvait donc pas en être autrement : coup de cœur!!! Le dernier chapitre avant l’épilogue est un beau clin d’oeil, j’ai trouvé cela touchant et émouvant.

  Pour terminer ces quelques mots, je vais laisser la parole à Abain, criant de vérité, qui illustre en tout point la façon dont il aime Esme, indéniablement:

«J’ai besoin d’elle,comme elle a besoin de moi. Pour jouir. Pour Vivre. »

Abain.

  Ce second opus est une partie de la version d’Abain au passé et au présent sur sa relation avec Esme.

Il est tombé avant elle dans ses travers et retombera un peu plus pour elle, pour la rendre heureuse et la délivrer. Mais finalement ne l’entraînera-t-il pas avec lui du côté sombre ?

La part d’ombre d’Esme rend Abain encore plus possessif, ayant un besoin irrépressible de la posséder de toute son âme, pour avoir l’impression de l’avoir complètement à lui, malgré les aspects qui lui échappent.

C’est un amour dévorant qui habite Abain, presque malsain. Malheureusement, Il a suffi de mauvaises rencontres, de décisions pour vivre l’enfer et faire plonger son amour avec lui, ou alors une mauvaise fée s’est penchée sur le berceau d’Esme… Pourquoi cet amour maudit attise autant de malchance, de jalousies, seront-ils un jour en paix ? Avec eux-mêmes, c’est compliqué, ensemble, je n’en vois pas la possibilité…

Farah Anah nous livre une suite tout aussi addictive que l’était le premier tome. Les situations s’inversent, se compliquent, deviennent inextricables. J’en viens à me demander comment il est possible d’infliger autant de choses à ses héros, tu es cruelle avec eux Farah, mais c’est tellement bien écrit que je t’excuse car pauvres Esme et Abain. Je suis toujours dans la « team Esme » me disant qu’Abain a sacrément « merdé » (pardon pour cette expression, mais elle est tellement appropriée), malgré les circonstances. Quand on pense qu’ils ont touché le fond, ils ne pourront pas voir pire, et bien l’auteure arrive à nous surprendre encore !

C’est plus qu’une battante, qui se relève, avance avec un objectif, qui force le respect pour ce personnage qu’est Esme, comme elle le dit : « Abain n’a jamais été un composant de mon monde, il est mon monde », et elle sera sa guerrière, prenant les rênes de sa vie.

Je pense qu’il vaut mieux lire ces deux tomes quasiment à la suite ou avec peu de temps entre, car tous les détails, les personnages ont leur importance et ils sont nombreux. C’est une histoire dense, captivante, qui vous poursuit même lorsque vous refermer votre livre.

Les souffrances façonnent chacun des personnages, mettant leur amour à l’épreuve et pourtant il est d’une rare puissance, malgré le temps, les mensonges, les secrets, les embûches. Il est d’une telle force qu’il ne garantit pas de finir heureux. Il a un côté merveilleux par sa profondeur mais il effraie par sa propension à être dévastateur.

Cette citation du livre le résume tellement bien : « Pourquoi une notion aussi belle que l’amour doit-elle être aspergée de laideur, maculée de tant de sang ? ».

A force de protéger l’autre, ils se sont perdus, ont fait les mauvais choix, ou pas …

La construction du second tome est en miroir avec les événements vus et vécus par Abain pour une partie mais également par Esme. Ce qui fait que beaucoup de choses s’expliquent doivent l’être, malgré la douleur qu’elles infligent ou le soulagement.

J’ai aimé que tout se tienne jusqu’à la fin avec logique, discernement par rapport à cet amour passionné, passionnel, dévorant. J’ai peu lu de romances avec une telle intensité dans les sentiments, avec des personnages aussi déterminés pour l’autre, avec telle abnégation, que j’apprécie d’en découvrir de nouvelles et de me laisser surprendre.

Farah Anah a réussi à me retourner les tripes avec cette histoire, par tout cet amour mais aussi par la cruauté et la perversion des êtres avides de pouvoir. Avec ce second tome, elle réussit aussi bien que le premier, voire plus, ce qui n’est jamais aisé, car les attentes sont nombreuses et la pression plus grande. Esme fut le théâtre de beaucoup de discussions avec Valou, nullement sur un désaccord (sauf pour Abain : elle le défendrait jusqu’en enfer !!!) mais plutôt sur tout ce qu’on a aimé et pourquoi, à quel moment.

J’en arrive au point où les mots me manquent pour décrire mon ressenti suite à cette lecture. Mais en faut-il encore, je ne suis pas sure, si un petit dernier (qui n’en ai pas qu’un bien sûr !) pour la route : j’ai adoré ce diptyque dans sa globalité, c’est pourquoi je décerne à Esme (tome 1 et 2) un gros coup ❤ , avec une préférence pour le second livre car Esme se révèle et un Abain tombe le masque !

Cette romance se passe dans le milieu du rap français, avec une guerre d’ego et groupes … et là comment vous dire, je me suis sentie, vieille, dépassée, sachant que je n’ai jamais aimé ce style de musique et ce qu’il véhicule en terme d’images, pas de textes car certains sont très travaillés et traitent de thème sérieux.

Je vais vous faire un petit résumé, histoire de planter le décor et que vous compreniez mieux mes réticences du début !

Angie tout juste diplômée pour devenir coach de vie, se voit trahie par son amoureux et sur le point de perdre son logement. Un appel providentiel de l’agent de son frère Bo, avec qui elle est fâchée depuis trois ans, depuis qu’il l’a abandonnée sans un mot pour la France, vient lui proposer d’aider son frère à redorer son image de rappeur. Il lui propose de faire de même avec plusieurs de ses recrues dont le rappeur, Astro Conti, l’ennemi juré de Bo.

Qu’a-t-elle à perdre, rien, sous les conseils de sa meilleure amie, Carolane, elle prend la direction Paris. Les retrouvailles sont tendues, car plusieurs années de rancœurs sont présentes pour Angie, et de culpabilité pour Bo. Tout est orchestré pour qu’elle soit présentée comme sa petite-amie, c’est ce qui va attirer Astro, qui ne rêve que de vengeance …

Sera-t-elle un dommage collatéral de cette guère d’Ego ? Comment va-t-elle gérer ce spécimen avec un frère sur protecteur ?

Ce ne fut pas évident pour moi de rentrer dans cette histoire mais cette Angie à la fois forte et à fleur de peau, perdues dans blessures, ses retrouvailles avec son frère, m’a embarquée contre toute attente.

C’est intense, rempli de secrets, de non-dits… Cette auteure a un don pour créer des liens très forts, attractifs plus que de raison entre ses personnages principaux. C’est tendu, sensuel, on marche sur la corde raide une bonne partie du livre tout en se doutant du cliffangher ou de la catastrophe, arrivés, et c’est plus fort que nous, addictif, on s’accroche à chaque, mot, phrases, pour en connaître la suite.

Ce personnage d’Angie est d’une rare beauté intérieure et rayonnante, même si son physique est bien. Elle est altruiste, apporte du bon, de l’espoir à son prochain, mais qui la protégera elle … C’est ce que je me suis demandé au fil de ma lecture, adorant son attraction avec Astro, tout en m’inquiétant sans cesse des retombées.

Ces deux âmes se sont érigées des barricades autour de leur cœur pour ne plus jamais souffrir les abattront-ils ?

Astro fait partie de ses hommes qui sont entiers, violents tellement leurs sentiments les submergent, guidé par l’adrénaline. Pourtant, ils sont capables de devenir des « agneaux » au contact des personnes qu’ils aiment, de déplacer des montagnes pour ces mêmes personnes.

Ce combat de lâcher prise entre eux et juste magnifique, drôle parfois mais surtout d’une intensité folle. Chacun d’eux ne compte céder d’un pouce, ce qui fait toute la tension et le côté addictif de ce livre. Sous les couches de vanité du rappeur brille un bel astre qui ne demande qu’à se révéler !

C’est très rythmé aussi bien dans les actions que dans les paroles, ajoutez-y cette dose de tension sexuelle inassouvie et vous avez un cocktail explosif ! Ça m’a séduit, émue et conquise !!!

Hâte de voir ce que nous réserve Lia Rose pour le tome 3 !

Le voici le voilà, le tome 2 de Power Games. J’avais hâte de le découvrir, d’autant plus que le premier opus m’avait vraiment plu. Je ne vais pas m’attarder sur le “résumé” de l’histoire puisque Julie vous l’a expliqué ci-dessus. Je vais passer directement à mon ressenti, entrons dans le vif du sujet!

Il est très rare de lire une romance qui se déroule dans le milieu des musiques urbaines. Lia Rose n’a pas choisi n’importe quel rappeur pour l’inspirer: Nekfeu! Comme Julie, le rap en général n’est pas ma came. Ceci dit il y a quand même quelques incontournables d’NTM ou IAM que j’aime écouter de temps en temps. Nekfeu a la particularité de choisir ses mots, avec soin, pour composer ses morceaux, comme un poète des temps modernes. Ce n’est pas pour rien que l’auteure a choisi des extraits de ses textes en tête de chapitre. Cela apporte vraiment une touche d’originalité non négligeable.

Malheureusement pour moi, j’ai eu beaucoup de mal à me concentrer au début de ma lecture. Cela m’a énormément frustrée car très vite on sent que Lia Rose nous a réservé une histoire très intense. Et ce n’est pas qu’une impression! Ce défaut de concentration m’a vraiment gênée pour entrer complètement dans l’histoire. Mais la plume de l’auteure et ses personnages ont su dompter ce manque pour réussir ensuite à me plonger totalement dans l’intrigue.

Et mon dieu, ce que c’est bien écrit ! J’ai vraiment apprécié le travail apporté par l’auteure pour ses personnages secondaires, Bo et Sarah, en tête. Ces personnages sont vraiment touchants, les véritables talons d’Achille d’Angie et Astro. Ils apportent une nuance subtile à l’ensemble du récit, c’est vraiment très plaisant.

La trame montre crescendo, comme une partie d’échec ( si chère à Astro et Angie) ou comme un combat sur un ring. Chacun essaye de discerner les failles de son adversaire, pour les retourner contre lui. Entre ces deux là c’est exactement pareil. Ils se cherchent, se trouvent, développent un sentiment d’appartenance très fort, tout en se repoussant comme deux aimants. C’est la force de l’auteure dans cette saga, de nous proposer des personnages si forts et si fragiles à la fois. On s’attache très vite à Astro et Angie. Lui est aussi sombre, qu’elle est lumineuse. Ensemble, ils sont bruts et touchants à la fois. Leur histoire atypique rend leur romance passionnante. On vit ça avec eux, pleinement, que dis-je on bout même! Entre eux, l’amour se construit pierre après pierre, solide et indestructible. Ils vont en avoir des embûches sur leur chemin. Des révélations douloureuses vont les bouleverser, peut-être même les briser, mais le récit se veut optimiste, ne serait-ce que par le biais du personnage d’Angie. Voyez plutôt ce qu’elle dit:

“La vie est dure, elle est aussi très belle.Il faut profiter de chaque seconde, ne jamais oublier que le bonheur réside dans les choses simples. […] Rire, pleurer, toucher, admirer, sentir et ressentir. Il faut juste trouver ce qui nous donne envie de nous lever chaque matin.“

Que voulez-vous que je rajoute à cela? En bref, ma note du précédent opus est légèrement supérieure à celle-ci, cependant, ne vous y fiez pas trop: ce tome est vraiment à découvrir et à lire parce qu’il est d’une intensité remarquable! Vivement le troisième et dernier livre, je me demande ce que Lia nous a réservé, en tous les cas, chapeau à l’auteure pour ce travail titanesque fourni pour cette saga!
