The painting portrays the anguish and remorse on the face of the elder Ivan and the gentleness of the dying Tsarevich, forgiving his father with his tears.
To date, the painting has been targeted by vandals twice. 1913 was the first instance of this - when 29-year-old Abram Balashov, a well-to-do icon painter, stabbed the part of the canvas showing the faces of Ivan and his son with a knife, leaving three long slashes. As he did this, he screamed: “Enough of death, enough of bloodshed!” After learning about the incident, the Tretyakov’s gallery curator Georgy Khruslov took his own life by jumping under a train – ashamed that his staff didn’t keep the painting safe.

On January 14, 2020, Vera Pekhteleva, a 23-year-old college student from Kemerovo, was murdered. On the day of her death, she went to pick up her belongings from the home of her ex-boyfriend, Vladislav Kanyus; the couple had broken up two months earlier. But that day, Pekhteleva didn’t leave his apartment alive. According to case materials, she sustained more than 100 injuries. According to her uncle, her first injuries came 12 hours before her eventual death.
Neighbors reported hearing the sound of a woman’s screams coming from the apartment. They tried to get into the apartment themselves, but nobody would open the door; they also called the police at least eight times. Ultimately, however, law enforcement showed up only after Kanyus’s brother, a friend, and the neighbors broke open the door themselves and discovered Pekhteleva’s body. According to Vera Pekhteleva’s mother, Oksana Pekhteleva, Kanyus was sitting on the bathroom floor, drinking vodka.
Initially, a criminal case was opened against Kanyus, and he faced up to 15 years in prison for murder. In the spring of 2021, Pekhteleva’s family managed to get his crime reclassified as “murder with particular cruelty,” which carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. Additionally, Kanyus was charged with violent false imprisonment and rape under the threat of murder.
In July 2022, the Kemerovo Regional Court found Kanyus guilty of “murder with particular cruelty.” It sentenced Kanyus to 17 years in prison and ordered him to pay Pekhteleva’s parents 500,000 rubles ($5,540) in compensation. His was acquitted of the rape charge, and the false imprisonment charge was dropped because the statute of limitations had expired. In his closing statement, Kanyus reportedly said that he didn’t intend to kill Pekhteleva and insisted that she had “provoked” him.
Pekhteleva’s family disagreed with the court’s verdict and tried to appeal it. In June 2023, human rights advocate Alyona Popova (one of the first people to publicize the story of Pekhteleva’s murder) reported that Kanyus’s case had recently been scheduled for review, but that, according to Pekhteleva’s family, Kanyus had been released from prison and sent to fight in the war against Ukraine.
Pekhteleva’s mother, Oksana Pekhteleva, said she first noted something was amiss when she saw photographs of Kanyus wearing camouflage and holding weapons on his social media account. After that, the family sent a request to Russia’s Federal Penitentiary Service, which informed them that on April 28, 2023, Kanyus had been sent from a prison in the Kemerovo region to one in Novosibirsk, and from there he was put “under the control of the Federal Penitentiary Service’s Rostov regional division.” Though the family’s request was filed in late April, the response didn’t come until mid-June.
“In other words, the cassation appeal still hadn’t taken place, and he was sent to war. And what comes next? Amnesty,” Popova said. Kanyus’s current whereabouts are unknown.
Criminal negligence
In the aftermath of Vera Pekhteleva’s murder, in addition to the criminal case against Vladislav Kanyus, a separate case was opened against the Kemerovo police, who failed to respond when Kanyus’s neighbors reported hearing screams. Initially, the defendants in the case were 41-year-old shift supervisor Major Mikhail Balashov and 40-year-old senior duty officer Captain Dmitry Taritsyn. According to investigators, they registered the incident report but did not send a task force to the scene. The officers were charged with criminal negligence, which is punishable by up to five years in prison.
Later, officers Maria Ponomareva, Maria Dunayeva, and Kristina Yudintseva were also charged in the case. Investigators say the women failed to listen to the full recordings of the emergency calls, did not ask the callers the proper questions about the situation, and did not report the information to police task forces and to the Russian National Guard.
The officers’ trial was postponed several times due to the defendants’ purported health problems, though Pekhtelova’s relatives alleged that the authorities deliberately drew out the process and that the court declined to give Kanyus a harsher sentence in order to assist the police.
The prosecution requested prison sentences between 2.5 and 3.5 years for the defendants, while the officers themselves asked the court to acquit them.
On July 10, 2023, a Kemerovo court sentenced all of the officers to probation and ordered them to pay two million rubles ($22,160) to Pekhtelova’s family in compensation. After the sentence was handed down, Pekhtelova’s father, Yevgeny Pekhtelov, said that justice had “halfway prevailed,” though he said the defendants should have been given prison terms. “They [the police] are smiling right now, they’re satisfied,” he said.
On July 10, Alyona Popova shared a statement from Vera Pekhtelova’s mother:
We weren’t holding out hope for prison sentences [for the police officers]. In the three and a half years that we’ve been fighting for justice in our case, we’ve seen all the skeletons in the closet of our justice system, our law enforcement system, and our penalty enforcement institutions. What is there to say? Our goal at the moment is to find information about the whereabouts of Vera’s murderer.
According to Popova, Vera Pekhtelova’s uncle told her that Kanyus is in an online group for people seeking to emigrate to the U.S. “That’s just the cherry on top of this cake from hell,” Popova said.

Nikolay Cherkasov in Ivan the Terrible, Part I
Nikolay Cherkasov in the color sequence of Ivan the Terrible, Part II
Ivan the Terrible, Parts I and II (Sergei Eisenstein, 1945-46) Cast: Nikolay Cherkasov, Lyudmila Tselikovskaya, Serafima Birman, Mikhail Nazvanov, Mikhail Zharov, Amvrosi Buchma, Mikhail Kuznetsov, Pavel Kadochnikov, Andrei Abrikasov, Vsevolod Pudovkin, Vladimir Balashov, Aleksandr Mgebrov, Pavel Massalsky. Screenplay: Sergei Eisenstein. Cinematography: Andrei Moskvin, Eduard Tisse. Production design: Iosif Shpinel, Sergei Eisenstein. Costume design: Leonid Naumov, M. Safonova. Music: Sergei Prokofiev. David Thomson has made a suggestion that a better film epic could be made of the life of Sergei Eisenstein than the one that was made about the life of John Reed -- i.e., Warren Beatty's Reds (1981). In fact, Eisenstein's life was so crowded with artistic and political drama that it would probably have to be an HBO miniseries like Game of Thrones (which is not a bad subtitle for Ivan the Terrible, come to think of it). The drama surrounding Ivan the Terrible alone would be enough for a whole season's episode, with Eisenstein struggling to bring his proposed three-installment film about Stalin's favorite czar to the screen while at the same time dealing with the lethal whims of the dictator himself. After Part I of Ivan the Terrible was released to great acclaim in 1945, including a Stalin Prize from the hands of the man himself, Stalin soured on the project: The mad frenzy of Ivan in Part II cut too close to the bone and it was not released until 1958 -- five years after Stalin's death and ten years after Eisenstein's. Part III had begun filming but was canceled, and what existed of it, except for some stills and scraps, was destroyed. After all this Sturm und Drang, it would be nice to conclude, as some critics have done, that Ivan the Terrible is one of the masterpieces of world cinema. But I can't go that far. It seems to me a great directorial folly, akin to Heaven's Gate (Michael Cimino, 1980) in its directorial excesses, its indulgence in style for style's sake. That the style is immensely entertaining in its artistic wrong-headedness pushes Ivan the Terrible in the direction of camp, a world's fair exhibition of stained-glass attitudes, early silent film poses, great garish sets, costumes that make even the hairiest 16th-century Russians look like drag queens, and in Part II there's a sequence in the most lurid color this side of some of the ballet sequences in MGM musicals of the 1950s. The first time we see Sigismond (Pavel Massalsky), the king of Poland, in Part II, he's sprawled across the throne in a position that almost screams for a sign proclaiming "Careless Decadence," and really looks extremely uncomfortable. Ivan's enemy, Archbishop Philip (Andrei Abrikasov), swans about in a billowing cloak that has no known sartorial or clerical necessity, and which allows Ivan (Nikolay Cherkasov) to forestall his exit by simply placing a foot on it. When Philip does manage to leave, the cloak raises a cloud of dust that suggests Ivan needs to liquidate the housekeeping staff. The collection of poses in Ivan the Terrible is balletic and operatic in the worst senses of the words, but the film is also watchable for all those reasons. There are some redeeming values, of course. It's a window into the mind of the Stalinist Soviet Union, both in what it approved and what it banned. It has a distinguished score by Prokofiev, though unfortunately muddied by poor sound reproduction -- in restoring the film, it's too bad that as much attention wasn't paid to providing a new music soundtrack as to cleaning up the images. Visually, it's fascinating, even when the visuals are absurd.

Moscow court arrests alleged attempted assassins of Kremlin propagandist and TV presenter
A Russian court arrested seven members of the Russian Nazi extremist group NS/WP for allegedly plotting an assassination attempt on Russian propagandist Margarita Simonyan and TV presenter Ksenia Sobchak, Russian state news agency TASS reported on July 15.
It was reported that of the seven detained, four are minors born in 2005 and 2006, the others are 18-year-old Mykhailo Balashov and 22-year-old Yehor Saveliev.
An unnamed NS/WP member told Russian independent media outlet The Insider that detainees were tortured a day before the official detention and were forced to give false testimony.
After being tortured, the detainee allegedly said the order to kill Sobchak and Simonyan was received from the Ukrainian special services. Allegedly, for each successful killing, a reward of about $16,500 was promised.
“They are being electrocuted, strangled, one of them had his arm broken,” he said.
Earlier, it was reported that Russia’s Federal Security Service or FSB prevented an attempt to kill “two prominent journalists."
Margarita Simonian is the head of Russia Today, a Kremlin-backed international news site and TV channel seen as one of the key outlets of Russian propaganda worldwide. On public television apearances since the full-scale invasion, Simonian has repeatedly called for an escalation of Russia’s war, including into an international nuclear exchange.
Ksenia Sobchak, daughter of the late Anatolii Sobchak, once mayor of St Petersburg and former boss of Vladimir Putin, positioned herself as a liberal in Russia, despite appearing herself frequently on state television and even being registered to run for president in 2018.
Russia after Wagner revolt: Will Putin stay afloat or face more turmoil?
The rebellion organized by Russia’s Wagner mercenary group in June is seen by many analysts as a sign of weakness and fragility of Vladimir Putin’s regime. First, several thousand armed mercenaries managed to march for hundreds of kilometers from Rostov to the vicinity of Moscow, and no one
