A judge on Tuesday sentenced Anjem Choudary, one of the UK's most recognised radical Islamist preachers, to life jail after he was found guilty of directing a banned "terrorist organisation".
Sentencing Choudary at Woolwich Crown Court in  London to a minimum term of 28 years, judge Mark Wall told the 57-year-old former lawyer that he was "front and centre in running a terrorist organisation".
The prosecution followed a joint investigation by London's Metropolitan Police, the New York Police Department (NYPD) and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
He will serve more than 26 years behind bars in total due to the time he has already spent in custody, meaning he will not be released before the age of 85, Wall said.
Explaining why he had ordered the lengthy term, the judge added that Choudary had "encouraged young men into radical activity".
Long in the authorities' sights, Choudary has already spent time in jail for supporting the jihadist Islamic State group.
His return to prison comes after a jury last week convicted him of being the "caretaker" leader of Al-Muhajiroun (ALM), which was proscribed in the UK in 2010.
The group was founded in 1996 by London-based Syrian-born cleric Omar Bakri Muhammad with the goal of establishing an Islamic caliphate in the UK.
Its members have been implicated in a number of attacks, including the murder of British soldier Lee Rigby in 2013, and attacks on London Bridge in 2017 and 2019.
- 'Important moment' -
Despite claims it had been disbanded, prosecutors said Al-Muhajiroun still exists under different names, including the New York-based Islamic Thinkers Society.
US law enforcement officers infiltrated the group and attended online lectures it hosted with Choudary in 2022 and 2023, sparking police probes in Britain and Canada.
"There are individuals that have conducted terrorist attacks or travelled for terrorist purposes as a result of Anjem Choudary's radicalising impact upon them," Dominic Murphy, of London's Metropolitan Police, said after the conviction.
Rebecca Weiner, deputy commissioner of the New York Police Department, told reporters Choudary's conviction was "historic" and described him as a "shameless, prolific radicaliser".
"It is usually the foot soldiers, the individuals who are brought into the network who go on to commit the attacks who are brought to justice," she said.
"It's rarely the leader, which is what makes this a particularly important moment."
Choudary, the son of a market trader, became a familiar media figure after staging demonstrations in front of UK mosques, embassies and police stations in the early 2000s.
His ultimate goal, he said, was to fly the flag of Islam above 10 Downing Street, the prime minister's residence.
He was jailed for five and a half years in 2016 for encouraging support for the Islamic State group, and was released early from prison in 2018.
Choudary's co-defendant Khaled Hussein, 29, from Edmonton, Canada, was also convicted of membership of ALM and was sentenced to five years in prison on Tuesday.

Ramadan is a great time to pick up a book by a Muslim author. If you're on Twitter and/or Instagram, a few hashtags to watch for are #ramadanreads, #ramadanreadathon, and #muslimshelfspace. I'm including a video about the origin of #muslimshelfspace. That hashtag was instrumental in helping me find, read, and share titles by Muslim authors back in 2017.

If you would like to read books by Muslim authors during Ramadan or anytime this year, here are a few we'd recommend.
Queen of the Tiles by Hanna Alkaf Salaam Reads / Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers [Audrey's Review]
13 points noun: a person or thing that precipitates an event or change
When Najwa Bakri walks into her first Scrabble competition since her best friend’s death, it’s with the intention to heal and move on with her life. Perhaps it wasn’t the best idea to choose the very same competition where said best friend, Trina Low, died. It might be even though Najwa’s trying to change, she’s not ready to give up Trina just yet.
But the same can’t be said for all the other competitors. With Trina, the Scrabble Queen herself, gone, the throne is empty, and her friends are eager to be the next reigning champion. All’s fair in love and Scrabble, but all bets are off when Trina’s formerly inactive Instagram starts posting again, with cryptic messages suggesting that maybe Trina’s death wasn’t as straightforward as everyone thought. And maybe someone at the competition had something to do with it.
As secrets are revealed and the true colors of her friends are shown, it’s up to Najwa to find out who’s behind these mysterious posts—not just to save Trina’s memory, but to save herself.
Love from Mecca to Medina (and Love from A to Z) by S.K. Ali Salaam Reads / Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers
Adam and Zayneb. Perfectly matched. Painfully apart.
Adam is in Doha, Qatar, making a map of the Hijra, a historic migration from Mecca to Medina, and worried about where his next paycheck will come from. Zayneb is in Chicago, where school and extracurricular stresses are piling on top of a terrible frenemy situation, making her miserable.
Then a marvel occurs: Adam and Zayneb get the chance to spend Thanksgiving week on the Umrah, a pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina, in Saudi Arabia. Adam is thrilled; it’s the reboot he needs and an opportunity to pray for a hijra in real life: to migrate to Zayneb in Chicago. Zayneb balks at the trip at first, having envisioned another kind of vacation, but then decides a spiritual reset is calling her name too. And they can’t wait to see each other—surely, this is just what they both need.
But the trip is nothing like what they expect, from the appearance of Adam’s former love interest in their traveling group to the anxiety gripping Zayneb when she’s supposed to be “spiritual.” As one wedge after another drives them apart while they make their way through rites in the holy city, Adam and Zayneb start to wonder: was their meeting just an oddity after all? Or can their love transcend everything else like the greatest marvels of the world?
Travelers Along the Way: A Robin Hood Remix by Aminah Mae Safi Feiwel and Friends [Crystal's review]
Jerusalem, 1192. The Third Crusade rages on. Rahma al-Hud loyally followed her elder sister Zeena into the war over the Holy Land, but now that the Faranji invaders have gotten reinforcements from Richard the Lionheart, all she wants to do is get herself and her sister home alive.
But Zeena, a soldier of honor at heart, refuses to give up the fight while Jerusalem remains in danger of falling back into the hands of the false Queen Isabella. And so, Rahma has no choice but to take on one final mission with her sister.
On their journey to Jerusalem, Rahma and Zeena come across a motley collection of fellow travelers―including a softspoken Mongolian warrior, an eccentric Andalusian scientist, a frustratingly handsome spy with a connection to Rahma’s childhood, and an unfortunate English chaplain abandoned behind enemy lines. The teens all find solace, purpose and camaraderie―as well as a healthy bit of mischief―in each other’s company.
But their travels soon bring them into the orbit of Queen Isabella herself, whose plans to re-seize power in Jerusalem would only guarantee further war and strife in the Holy Land for years to come. And so it falls to the merry band of misfits to use every scrap of cunning and wit (and not a small amount of thievery) to foil the usurper queen and perhaps finally restore peace to the land.
All My Rage by Sabaa Tahir Razorbill
Lahore, Pakistan. Then. Misbah is a dreamer and storyteller, newly married to Toufiq in an arranged match. After their young life is shaken by tragedy, they come to the United States and open the Cloud’s Rest Inn Motel, hoping for a new start.
Juniper, California. Now. Salahudin and Noor are more than best friends; they are family. Growing up as outcasts in the small desert town of Juniper, California, they understand each other the way no one else does. Until The Fight, which destroys their bond with the swift fury of a star exploding.
Now, Sal scrambles to run the family motel as his mother Misbah’s health fails and his grieving father loses himself to alcoholism. Noor, meanwhile, walks a harrowing tightrope: working at her wrathful uncle’s liquor store while hiding the fact that she’s applying to college so she can escape him—and Juniper—forever.
When Sal’s attempts to save the motel spiral out of control, he and Noor must ask themselves what friendship is worth—and what it takes to defeat the monsters in their pasts and the ones in their midst.
From one of today’s most cherished and bestselling young adult authors comes a breathtaking novel of young love, old regrets, and forgiveness—one that’s both tragic and poignant in its tender ferocity.
Punching the Air by Ibi Zoboi & Dr. Yusef Salaam with illustrations by Omar T. Pasha -- Balzer + Bray [Our group discussion] [Interview with authors]
The story that I thought was my life didn’t start on the day I was born
Amal Shahid has always been an artist and a poet. But even in a diverse art school, he’s seen as disruptive and unmotivated by a biased system. Then one fateful night, an altercation in a gentrifying neighborhood escalates into tragedy. “Boys just being boys” turns out to be true only when those boys are white.
The story that I think will be my life starts today
Suddenly, at just sixteen years old, Amal’s bright future is upended: he is convicted of a crime he didn’t commit and sent to prison. Despair and rage almost sink him until he turns to the refuge of his words, his art. This never should have been his story. But can he change it?
With spellbinding lyricism, award-winning author Ibi Zoboi and prison reform activist Yusef Salaam tell a moving and deeply profound story about how one boy is able to maintain his humanity and fight for the truth, in a system designed to strip him of both.
If you have titles to add, please let us know in the comments.

The family left their homes on November 10 during the four-hour pause – a day after Israel announced a daily four-hour window to allow Palestinians to flee from the north to the south. At about noon, the family left the house waving white flags. Dina’s two sisters, who are married to two brothers, had left their homes on the first day of the war to stay at their in-laws’ villa, also in Gaza City. Dina was talking to her youngest sister Rulla on the phone as the group cautiously moved forward when suddenly screams pierced the air. Their other sister Lina had crumpled to the floor, blood soaking through her shirt after an Israeli tank fired at them. Rulla dragged Lina, getting her as far as the entrance of the Bakri building on Shuhada street, and tried to administer first aid. She saw a gunshot wound to her sister’s chest. But as the Israeli tank fire continued, Rulla had no choice but to leave her and run inside. Rulla’s husband Bashar Khayal was shot in his hand, and his sister Dalia was also wounded. Behind them, Bashar and Dalia’s grandmother Feryal was lying motionless on the street, killed. Rulla told Dina exactly where they were and begged her to get in touch with the International Committee for the Red Cross (ICRC) to save them. The building was behind al-Zaytoun pharmacy, Rulla said, by the Abbas intersection. Dina called the ICRC. They told her they couldn’t go to the area. ‘Worst feeling in the world’ The next day, on Saturday, Dina got the news she had been dreading. Lina had died, her body still at the entrance of the building. Dalia had also been killed, succumbing to her wounds. Lina’s two young boys, four-year-old Mohammad and nine-month-old Majed, were among those trapped inside the building with their father Tareq Khayal, their grandmother Dalia, their aunt Suha, Rulla, and Bashar. They had no food, water or electricity. Their phone batteries dying, Suha was able to send Dina one last message: “We are alive”. Dina flew to Cairo, Egypt, over the weekend, where her father lives alone, and was joined by her brother who lives in Dubai. “Just the thought of those two young boys not having water to drink or food to eat, the thought that they could die of dehydration or starvation…” her voice trails off, her breath catching.

UK hate preacher Anjem Choudary convicted for leading terror group
Tumblr media
[x]
DUBAI/LONDON: Islamist preacher Anjem Choudary is currently facing more time in jail after being found guilty of managing a terrorist organization following a joint investigation by MI5, Scotland Yard, the New York Police department and the Canadian police.
The radical preacher was convicted on Tuesday at a trial in Woolwich Crown court on charges of directing Al-MuHajjiroun, or ALM, a banned group under UK terror laws, encouraging support for it online by releasing videos and assuming a "caretaker" role.
Choudary, 57, is known to have inspired a generation of jihadis, reveling in his title of "number one radicalizer in Britain" as he instructed his followers on ways to "terrorize the enemy."
Dr. Shiraz Maher, from the department of war studies at King's College London, said "Anjem Choudary and his group, Al-MuHajjiroun, have a long history of inspiring acts of terrorism both at home and abroad. In fact, a number of people associated with his global network even migrated to Syria and joined Daesh, before commuting atrocities out there.
"It is hard to understate just how devastating the impact of Choudary's influence, and the networks he created, has been. This trial also demonstrates the lengths to which he was prepared to go in order to continue sowing his destructive message, despite having been previously convicted for other terrorism offenses."
Choudary's notoriety earned him a place on Preachers of Hate, an Arab News series that named and shamed hate preachers from around the world and across religions, nationalities, genders and sects.
Choudary, who once trained as a lawyer, took on the "caretaker role" of the terror group in 2014 after its spiritual leader Omar Bakri Muhammad was jailed in Lebanon.
One of ALM's original three founding members since its establishment in 2006, he was quoted at one of his lectures as saying: "Then number one radicalizer in Britain, that is a badge of honor for me. It's medallion on my chest. What do you want to call me? An extremist? A fanatic? All of these."
Choudary was previously imprisoned under a five-year sentence after rallying support for Daesh in October 2018. His release came with conditions preventing him from using the Internet until July 2021.
Concerns came from UK, the US and Canada after the preacher was found attempting to recruit a generation of young followers while releasing sermons online to a group called the Islamic Thinkers Society, or ITS, based in New York in June 2022.
Choudary went on to hold about 40 sermons for ITS up to April 2023.
What Choudary did not know was that ITS had been infiltrated by undercover law enforcement officers in the US who were present during his online classes, while British investigators bugged his home.
Commander Dominic Murphy, head of the Metropolitan counter terrorism command in the UK, said: “ALM’s tentacles have spread across the world and have had a massive impact on public safety and security.”
Rebecca Weiner, an NYPD commissioner, dubbed the case “historic” and described Choudary as a “shameless, prolific, radicalizer,” adding, “it is usually the foot soldiers who are brought into the network, who go on to commit the attacks who are brought to justice and it is rarely the leader, which is what makes this a particularly important moment.”
Choudary will be sentenced alongside Khaled Hussein, a 29-year-old follower of Choudary and a member of ALM.
The pair became increasingly brazen online, working up “Twitter storms” where they posted and campaigned for the release of Islamist prisoners.
Choudary was careful not to be seen to promote and incite violence, while Hussein attempted to cover his digital tracks, but both men were already being monitored by Canadian and American officers attending the ITS sermons.
Choudary continued to downplay his importance, likening himself to a Liverpool football player at the witness box. “If you ask about Kevin Keegan, people say he plays football for Liverpool, people look at me and think Al-MuHajjiroun,” he said.
However, the prosecution team demonstrated to the judge and jurors that ALM had not been dissolved, as Choudary boasted about the group during his online sermons.
Choudary and Hussein’s fates will determined in court on July 30.

"Where is God," an elderly man desperately wonders when surveying the debris in the Palestinian refugee camp Jenin.
Directed and co-produced by Palestinian actor Mohammad Bakri, Jenin Jenin includes testimony from Jenin residents after the Israeli army's Defensive Wall operation. The city and camp were the scenes of fierce fighting which ended with Jenin flattened and scores of Palestinians dead. Palestinians as well as numerous human rights groups accused Israel of committing war crimes in the attack. The United Nations appointed a commission of inquiry, but Israel refused to let its members visit the scene.
Banned in Israel, Jenin Jenin is dedicated to Iyad Samudi, the producer of the film, who returned home to Yamun after the shooting of the film was completed. On June 23, as Israeli forces besieged Yamun, Samudi was shot and killed as he was leaving a militarily-closed area with three friends.
