Long Overdue, the #MeToo Wave Has Finally Hit India
The waves of #MeToo, a movement that has been sweeping the world since Harvey Weinstein was publicly exposed as a sexual predator in October 2017, have finally reached the shores of India. For the past year, though allegations against powerful men in Hollywood and North American media have been tumbling out in a near-steady drip, Bollywood had by and large seemed inoculated from this infectiousâand desperately neededânew strain of truth-telling. But like with all great movements, all it needed was a catalyst.
It started with a story that, ironically, had been told before. Former Bollywood actress Tanushree Dutta had spoken out 10 years ago about an incident on a film set that involved a veteran actor, Nana Patekar, touching her inappropriately while filming a dance routine. She complained to the choreographer on set but her concerns were dismissed and reportedly more lewd dance steps added to the routine. âIt was really creepy because he had to put his hands all over me,â Dutta told Radio 1 Newsbeat. Emotionally traumatized, she tried to leave the set but her vehicle was attacked by an angry mob believed to have been hired by Patekar.
âThis happened ten years ago, and even ten years ago all the steps were taken: I filed a police complaint, gave a complaint to CINTA, produced written records, everything,â Dutta said at a We The Women summit earlier this month. âThe media covered it extensively, although the media was extremely hostile at that time. There was some outright derogatory, scandalous, salacious gossipy reporting at that time. It erupted like a story and it died down like a story, and the film industry was completely silent. I saw that these guys, Nana Patekar, the producer, the choreographer were all party to my harassment, and went about their lives as though nothing happened.â
Scarred by the experience, Dutta left the Hindi film industry but re-entered the public sphere just two weeks ago with her retelling of this story. Although she has seen an outpouring of support, she has just as equally been dismissed by people on social media and by members of the film community, even though a journalist who was present at the time has corroborated her story.
Some incidents that take place even a decade ago remain fresh in your memory. What happened with #TanushreeDutta on the sets of âHorn Ok Pleaseâ is one such incident â I was there. #NanaPatekar

Dutta has since re-filed her complaint with the police but what that will achieve legally is yet to be seen. But perhaps that doesnât quite matter. Just like with Dr Christine Blasey Ford, whose courageous coming forward may not have changed the outcome of the situation at hand but did galvanize a nation, Duttaâs recounting of her experience unleashed a flood of similar stories on Twitter and finally brought about a long-overdue reckoning. Unlike the #MeToo movement in the US, which was driven largely by investigative reporting by outlets like the New Yorker and the New York Times, Indiaâs moment of reckoning has largely been wrought on Twitter. âWomen are making it clear that they have had enough and they are ready to call out their abusers in public, as is evident from the multiple threads on Twitter of them naming and shaming harassers, and finding support from others who have had similar experiences,â wrote journalist Rituparna Chatterjee in a recent op-ed. âA WhatsApp group I am a part of lit up with incidents of sexual violations in the media industry, and women journalists have spoken about all the times they were made to feel uncomfortable by fellow journalists for just trying to their do their jobs. Within the safety of the closed group, they spoke about the whisper networks that have known men notorious for their transgressions.â
In the aftermath of Duttaâs retelling, women took to Twitter to out men that had violated, harassed or assaulted them in the past. Within days, a slew of Indian menâprominent journalists, comedians, directors and politiciansâhad been accused of sexual misconduct ranging from harassment to rape. âFinally, Indiaâs women are pushing back against the corrosive abuse of male power,â wrote journalist Barkha Dutt in an op-ed for the Washington Post. âIt is nothing short of a revolution.â
Thereâs the woke comedy group, All India Bakchod, whose members have been the target of several allegations in recent days.

One of its recurring collaborators, Utsav Chakraborty has been accused by multiple women of requesting and sending nude photographs over Snapchat and text, and a member of its regular ensemble, Gursimran Khamba, has been accused of sexual harassment. The ensembleâs co-founder Tanmay Bhatt has voluntarily stepped down in light of the fact that he had been informed of the allegations against Chakraborty but failed to act on them.
Vikas Bahl, a co-founder of one of the countryâs most progressive production companies, Phantom Films, has been accused of sexual assault by a former employee, who says he masturbated on her without her consent after pretending to pass out in her room following a post-production party. The company, which is behind Netflix Indiaâs acclaimed original series, Sacred Games, has since been dissolved. The news of the assault first broke on Huffington Post India last week, and has since unleashed a flood of responses and apologies on social media from the other partners of the production company, one of whom was allegedly informed about the assault at the time.
Several prominent journalists have been named in allegations of assault and misconduct, including MJ Akbar who was once an editor at Asian Age and is now a junior minister in Indiaâs Foreign Ministry. Journalist Priya Ramani, who has worked under Akbar in the past, wrote an open letter to her abusive former bossâwithout naming himâin the October 2017 issue of Vogue India, and has now come forward to reveal his identity. Since then, several other women have come forward to reveal they were harassed or violated by Akbar, including Ghazala Wahab, who wrote a harrowing account of her experience working with him in a piece for digital news outlet The Wire. âOnce, in autumn of 1997, while I was half-squatting over the dictionary, he sneaked up behind me and held me by my waist,â she wrote. âI stumbled in sheer fright while struggling to get to my feet. He ran his hands from my breast to my hips. I tried pushing his hands away, but they were plastered on my waist, his thumbs rubbing the sides of my breasts. Not only was the door shut, his back blocked it. In those few moments of terror, all sorts of thoughts ran through my mind. Finally, he released me. All this while, the wily smile never left his face.â
Other journalists who have been named in recent days include Prashant Jha, political editor and bureau chief of the Hindustan Times; Mayank Jain, principal correspondent of Business Standard; and KR Sreenivas, resident editor of the Hyderabad edition of The Times of India newspaper.
Since I'm calling them out.
Let me tell you about @KRSreenivas who is currently resident editor @toi Hyderabad (I think) who offered to drop me back after a day's work. We were about to launch Bangalore mirror back in 2008 and I had just moved to this city.

The #MeToo movement in India has gathered momentum in recent days, with more than a dozen complaints of sexual harassment and other sexual misconduct leveled online against prominent journalists, actors, movie directors, comedians and other public figures.
On Monday, it triggered an investigation into a leading journalist and questions about the future of Indiaâs top comedy collective.
The Hindustan Times, one of Indiaâs major national papers, said that Prashant Jha, its political editor and chief of bureau, has been asked to step down from all his editorial roles pending an investigation. âThis is a case of sexual harassment and an internal committee has been set up,â said the media groupâs general counsel, Dinesh Mittal, in an announcement.
Jha was accused by a former female colleague, Avantika Mehta, of sending inappropriate messages. Mehta made her complaint on Saturday in an article on the Firstpost news site and then on her own Twitter account.
Jha did not answer calls or text messages seeking comment. He has not responded publicly to the allegations.
Separately, Indiaâs biggest comedy group, All India Bakchod (AIB), said its future was in doubt following a series of allegations about sexual harassment.
Tanmay Bhat, the chief executive and co-founder of AIB, resigned after saying in a statement on Friday he made a âbig mistakeâ by continuing to work with a stand-up comic even after Bhat knew of allegations of inappropriate behavior by the performer.
The comic, Utsav Chakraborty, was accused last Thursday by Mahima Kukreja, a fellow comic, of soliciting nude pictures from under-age girls online and sending her pictures of his genitals.
She confirmed to Reuters that he sent her the pictures.
Chakraborty denied asking for nude picture from underage girls. He has said in a statement that has since been removed from his Twitter account that any sexting he did he thought was consensual.
According to a statement from the comedy group, another AIB co-founder, Gursimran Khamba, was also placed on a temporary leave of absence by the collective after an anonymous woman on social media on Monday accused him of âemotional blackmailâ and of trying to force himself on her. In a statement, Khamba denied any wrongdoing, saying there was no violation of consent.
He said the two of them âhooked up consensually multiple timesâ, and that the relationship later became toxic. The woman has also said the two of them were in a consensual sexual relationship, but that he also forced himself on her on two separate occasions.
âAt this time, both of our senior partners are immediately stepping away from all business at AIB. Truthfully we do not know what this means for the future of AIB or whether there is one,â according to a statement from the group, signed by Vidhi Jotwani, head of human resources at AIB.
The best-known group in Indiaâs growing comedy scene, AIB has more than 3.4 million subscribers on its YouTube channel.
Hotstar, an internet platform owned by Twenty-First Century Foxâs Star India unit, said it was pulling âOn Air with AIBâ, a news and current affairs show that still had more than 20 episodes to air and that was hosted by the four founders of AIB. In a tweet on its official handle, Hotstar said the developments surrounding AIB ran contrary to the platformâs values and that it was taking the show off air with immediate effect.
AIB was also developing a show for Amazon. A spokeswoman for Amazon India said the company had nothing to announce about its AIB ties.
CIVIL COMPLAINT
The series of accusations follows sexual harassment allegations made by actress Tanushree Dutta late last month against prominent actor Nana Patekar because of his behavior on the sets of a film they were shooting in 2008. On Saturday, Dutta filed a civil complaint against Patekar with the police, alleging sexual harassment, saying she suffered psychological trauma and was unable to work in films after that.
Patekar has denied the allegations. His lawyer said on Sept. 28 that Dutta had been sent a legal notice, which can be a precursor to a lawsuit, for making a false allegation.
Rajendra Shirodkar, Patekarâs lawyer, told Reuters on Sept. 28 that the notice asked Dutta to apologize to his client or face further action. He did not specify what that action would be.
In a statement to local news channels, Dutta confirmed that she had received a legal notice from Patekar.
On Sunday, movie director Anurag Kashyap said in a statement on his Twitter account that he regretted not acting on allegations of sexual misconduct made against his partner and producer Vikas Bahl in 2015. Bahl is alleged to have engaged in non-consensual sexual activity with a female colleague in her hotel room after a promotional party for a movie in 2015, according to two separate news reports published in the Mumbai Mirror in 2017 and on Saturday by the Huffington Post.
In 2017, Bahl denied the allegations. He could not be reached for comment this week.
On Saturday, Kashyap announced that Phantom Films, the production company he formed with Bahl and two others, was being dissolved. He did not cite any reasons for the company breaking up.
Some other media outlets also have launched inquiries. Among them The Wire, an online news portal, asked for specific complaints to be addressed to its Internal Complaints Committee after its co-founder, Sidharth Bhatia, was accused on Monday on Twitter of sending inappropriate messages to subordinates by a woman who claimed she worked with him. Another woman claimed on Twitter that he had made a vulgar comment about her.
Bhatia denied wrongdoing in a statement and said he did not recall either of the women as employees. He said he was willing to face an independent inquiry.

10 Instances That Proved Indian Television Is One Step Ahead Of Bollywood
New Post has been published on https://buzzertop.com/10-instances-proved-indian-television-one-step-ahead-bollywood/
10 Instances That Proved Indian Television Is One Step Ahead Of Bollywood
Indian television presentations are famous for two main reasons. First, to show the most hidden things in a stupid way, secondly, for the non-ending seasons, the fact is that in the top-top strange cases we saw on Indian television, only by our TV actors and actresses can be done.
When Indian cinema tried to add some major to its production, they started with VFX. But Indian television daily soaps can not do this because then TRP is used? Therefore, they come with more drama and more âstupidityâ
Here I am with the situation when Indian television has taken one step further. Of those ingredients, they used to add their daily soap to spices, some of them were useful, while some were taller.
Come on, take a look at such examples.
1. The love story of a 9-year-old boy with an 18-year-old girl.
Tejaswi Prakash starrer Pehredaar Piya Ki Negative noticeable solution was obtained in the form of the plot of the show, with an 18-year-old young woman managing a strange romantic story of a 9-year-old girl. Sony Entertainment Television captured this show when the audience filed a petition against the show to ban it
2. AIB Knockout
As a Bollywood, Ranveer Singh and Karan Johar starring All India Bakchod (AIB), a roasted comedy show was organized in Mumbai, which was in the form of a roastmaster. An FIR was lodged against 14 people, including film producer Karan Johar and actor Arjun Kapoor and Ranvir Singh.
Although many people went against it, many came out in support of freedom of speech. According to sources, the makers of Qtiapa, Viral Fever, in a video on YouTube, broadcast their feelings on freedom to see the online majority government government, freedom of expression and various materials on the web.
3. Intimacy on reality shows.
In addition to logic and fights, Big Boss is getting bolder with every season. And this is not just a season, but most of these competitors have reported on the camera. It can be Ashmit Patel and Veena Malik or Gauhar Khan and Kushal Tandon. Whether to accept it or not, I think there is a reason why the audience should not always wait for the Big Boss to appear in front of them, this is notified to the people..
4. Different avatars of television âBahusâ.
Now the time has changed. Indian television actress who addressed the orthodox Indian daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law, is not less than any silver screen actress in the title of summer and beauty. They are bold, open and hot, if you do not believe me, take a look at your social media profile, and you will know how they completely kill the television beauties by their bikini incarnations.
5. No humans, itâs superhumans.
this is not a big thing for the Indian TV show that they can cross the small line in the right way, they can turn women into a fly or Nagain because there is everything for the TRP!
6. Indian television shows shot abroad.
By implementing Karan Joharâs formula, it is revealed that we are extremely superficial, or have a lot of true latte, as well as additional budgets with entertainment, took extra budget with their artists and to shoot some important scenes. Flying for foreign nations
7. Specific romantic songs.
After creating the title track for the show, now TV daily soap has started making special verses for each episode.
8. Bollywood promotion on television sets.
I think it is right to say that the barrier between daily soap and Bollywood films has disappeared. Now every other day, various superstars join the crew of some famous TV shows to promote their films.
9. According to Indian Television, every other human is a criminal.
Though the provision is spreading awareness among people like people, on the other hand, even now a child doubts his father.
10. They completely lack sane storylines now.
First of all, he allowed a gorilla to fall in love with the main ladder of a daily soap, then he became a woman pregnant for a year and that too with a small collision ⌠and I did not start on the extreme scenario Done Indian television show has also proved wrong in science
