La ciutat de Sant Sebastià va bastir la seva fama com a ciutat balneari gràcies a la badia de la Concha (Kontxako badia, en euskera), molt ben protegida davant de les dures condicions que el golf de Biscaia reparteix per igual a les costes cantàbriques i gascones.

Sant Sebastià (Donostia, en euskera) és una ciutat de punts estratègics que separen a banda i banda espais amb un caràcter molt diferent. El Casc Antic separa la badia de la Concha de la platja de la Zurriola, amb l'ajut del riu Urumea, que bandeja la península que culmina el mont Urgull. El mateix riu separa el barri de Gros, ubicat a esquenes de la platja surfera de la Zurriola i els gegantins blocs d'acer i vidre del complex Kursaal, de l'eixample de la ciutat cap a l'interior.

Al bell mig de l'entrada de la badia, l'illa de Santa Clara talla els embats del mar, però sense evitar que les marees crein dins de la Concha les previsibles pujades i baixades del nivell del mar. Això fa que, en un lloc especialment, el Cantàbric sigui perillós fins i tot als mateixos peus de la ciutat.

Entre la llarga platja de la Concha i la d'Ondarreta, que s'esten fins als peus del mont Igeldo, que tanca la badia per la seva banda occidental, les roques s'endinsen al mar. Però això només passa quan puja la marea. Quan hi ha baixamar, es pot passar d'una platja a l'altra sense perill.

I precissament sobre aquestes roques s'alça el palau de Miramar (Miramar Jauregia, en euskera). Es tracta de un mirador excepcional, que va triar la reina espanyola Maria Cristina per disfrutar de les condicions estivals que Donostia oferia als visitants amb les comoditats necessàries per a ella i la seva família i cortesans.

El palau, rodejat d'un parc que ofereix vistes tant cap a la badia com cap a les muntanyes que la rodegen i al passeig que corre paral·lel a les platges, és un excel·lent lloc per admirar absolutament tota la ciutat. Des d'allà es pot veure des del conjunt escultòric del 'Peine del viento' d'Eduardo Chillida, al límit occidental de la línia de la costa, fins a la 'Construcción vacía' de Jorge Oteiza, a la punta oriental de la badia, gairebé deixant l'illa de Santa Clara a l'esquena, als peus del mont Urgull i davant del mar obert.

L'edifici de Miramar recorda temps antics, i el seu jardí i el bosc que s'estén en alguns racons fan pensar –per a qui no la coneix– que Sant Sebastià queda lluny, molt lluny, també en el temps.
