Essay “A Rustic Fair”
It was the month of April. I was staying with my uncle at Jassar. The day of Baisakhi approached. I was told by my cousins that there would be a goodly fair at Narowal. I got up early in the morning and got ready to go there and see the fair. All my cousins accompanied me. There was no conveyance except Ekkas. So we hired an Ekka and went to the fair. On the way we had a very troublesome journey. Our bones were nearly broken by the jerks. On reaching Narowal we found that it presented a very festive appearance. There were booths and stalls along the road, There was plenty of dust and din. People were regaling themselves at different booths. People from different villages were coming in groups in their new clothes. They were all enjoying themselves with sweetmeats and aerated water. After that they went round the fair singing songs and feasting their eyes on many good things found in the fair. It was very hot at noon and people went to the wells for bathing. It seemed as if the fair was over. There was a slight revival towards the evening, but as soon as it began to get dark people left for their homes and I left for mine.
