Wicked: Singapore April 22nd, 2012 Cast- Zoe Jarrett (understudy Elphaba), Suzie Mathers (Glinda), David Harris (Fiyero), Anne Wood (Madame Morrible), Elisa Colla (Nessarose), James D Smith (Boq), Glen Hogstrom (u/s The Wizard) At just over 2 hours long, this is missing a few sequences, but all the big numbers and memorable dialogue scenes are intact. It’s shot from the very front row of the stalls at the side so, although this causes a lot of problems for the brave person who filmed it, we DO get many nice close-ups and a chance to see the show from quite an unusual angle at times! Very clear sound throughout.

The story of Nathan Packard

In Keith Brough and Frank Gardner's book, General Ward's Colonial Army, they write about a man named Nathan Packard, who they describe as a 1st Lieutenant and son of Zachariah Packard and Abigail Davenport. They further write that this individual was born in 1733 seemingly in Bridgewater, was a 1st lieutenant in Col John Bailey's Regiment in 1775, a captain in Colonel Edward Mitchell's Regiment, and holding similar positions until 1779 in varying companies (and regiments). They say he died in 1798 at age 65. But this snapshot is still not enough. Who was Nathan Packard and what was his story?

Note: This was originally posted on Mar. 30, 2018 on the main Packed with Packards WordPress blog (it can also be found on the Wayback Machine here). My research is still ongoing, so some conclusions in this piece may change in the future.

I wrote in my family history about some of those relating to Nathan Packard. I noted that

Nathaniel and Lydia would have two children before each of them died in the 18th century: Zachariah(1697-1771) and Mary (1695-1770). Mary would marry into the Leonard family. Nothing else is known about her. As for Zachariah, he would marry a woman named Abigail Davenport, and have four children: Elijah (b. 1725), Nathan (1733-1798) who was a captain in the Revolutionary War, Abigail and Nathaniel (d. 1721). When Zachariah died in 1771, he would have a will and inventory that were in keeping with the agricultural lifestyle of many of the Packards. Within his will, he would give his sons Nathan and Nathaniel a “servant” named Peter, his daughter Abigail a “servant boy” named America, and said that a “servant maid” named Ann would be given to his wife Abigail, only set free after her death...Hence, he [Zachariah] is clearly a slaveowner which was not explicitly stated in his will, except for calling the enslaved people listed above “servants” who are “worth” to him (as “quick stock”) a total of 69 pounds, 4 shillings, 9 pence. Using this measurement, it means that these people constitute almost 33% or one-third of his total property! Through his distribution of enslaved people to his sons Nathan and Nathaniel, daughter Abigail, and wife of the same name, it makes all of these individuals slaveowners as well.

Michael, on Find A Grave adds a further meaning of Zachariah's inventory:

By the way, I just started looking at your family history. The excerpt from Zachariah's will you quote on page 19 contains a word (Mistress) that you apparently couldn't interpret because of the cursive writing style of the time, which wrote lower-case "s" almost the way we would today write "f" except in the final position or after another "s." Hence "history" would look a bit like "hiftory" and "mistress" would look a bit like "miftrefs." Compare the German letter "ß" (Eszett), which is a ligature double "s." The line reads, "The Service of the Negro woman Ann during her Mistress [sic, should be Mistress's] Life."

But there is much more to the story. Moses Cary writes in A Genealogy of the Families who Have Settled in the North Parish of Bridgewater that Nathan Packard had seven songs, five daughters, marrying a woman with the last name of Jackson. Bradford Kingman adds in his "acclaimed" History of North Bridgewater about Nathan too. He writes that Nathan was a captain from North Bridgewater in 1778, a resident in Bridgewater's north parish in 1770, served in the British military in 1755, was a 1st lieutenant in 1775. [1] Nathan Packard is an established Patriot. He served as a captain while also noting he served as a 1st lieutenant and that he married a woman named Lydia Jackson (on October 10, 1758, with her named "Lidia" in the record). Later on, a woman named Mary Manley Packard would become a charter member of a DAR chapter "through the service of her great-grandfather, Capt. Nathan Packard, who was a illustrious patriot of the Revolution."

Nathan has a Find A Grave entry noting that he and Lydia moved to West Bridgewater (now called Brockton) to raise their family. The had 12 children in all! His gravestone is mostly unreadable except for his name and perhaps his year of death. The gravestone of his wife, Lydia, is much more readable. That is all I will note for now, but the story of the Packards continues onward.

Lady Gaga, Madonna, Kesha, U2 and Panic! At the Disco were among the answers to the question: What recording artist or band would you most like to see providing the score for a musical on Broadway? The question was asked in a contest to win tickets to Head Over Heels, a musical that uses the music of The Go-Go’s. The winner of the tickets, David Ashtiani, happened to pick Lady Gaga: “Her music is fun, relatable, and easy to get into the “beat”. Lady Gaga’s music is so flexible and can be adapted into many different, fun scenes throughout an original script.” (David won not because of her choice, but because his order in answering was selected at a drawing on Random.org.) There was an alternative question: What work of literature would you like to see turned into a musical?

The answers to this question were more varied and sometimes obscure. Below are a selection of responses to the literature question, organized alphabetically by title, with links to the recommended books to learn more about them. Producers, are you listening?

Zenobia “I believe Zenobia by Morten Durr should become a musical. Zenobia was an Egyptian warrior/Queen who took no orders from anyone, she was her own boss. She went through so many things and overcame so many challenges with strategy and pride. The story is about a Syrian girl named Amina who is caught up in a war that reaches her village, when she escapes, she becomes overwhelmed, but she remembers her Mother telling her to think of the warrior Zenobia. I believe with the right representation this would be a great musical, even if you just did it on Zenobias life, it’s so fascinating and empowering to women all across the world. The representation is crucial, we need more Middle Eastern representation” – Sophia

A Selection of Recording Artists

I would most like to see Ariana Grande provide the score for a musical on Broadway. Her theatre background + her new sound on her most recent album Sweetener would be perfect for a fun new musical on Broadway, and it would really get the kids out and make them want to see theatre. – Emily Antonowicz

I think Kesha could write a really amazing pop score. Ultimately she has some of the most influential hits of the late 2000’s, and she completely reshaped the pop scene. She created a place where female pop stars could be a bit messier and sing about men the way men sing about women. Her last album Rainbow is an amazing journey about survival and overcoming one’s demons. With the current climate I think she could write a really wonderful score that would resonate with people with similar experiences to hers, but also with a broader spectrum of people. – Patrick Howard

With 54%, Janet Mills wins Democratic nomination in race for Maine governor

AUGUSTA — Attorney General Janet Mills won the Democratic nomination for governor on Wednesday following the nation’s first use of ranked-choice voting to decide a statewide election.

After days of scanning, downloading and certifying ballots, the Secretary of State’s Office ran all of the results from the June 12 election through the ranked-choice voting tabulation software. The result: Mills won the seven-person primary with 54.1 percent of the vote, followed by veteran and attorney Adam Cote with 45.9 percent, in unofficial results. The margin between Mills and Cote – the Democratic front-runners following the balloting last week – was just under 9,500 votes once all of the ranked-choice votes had been reallocated.

A former legislator and district attorney from Farmington, Mills will face off against Republican Shawn Moody and two independents, Alan Caron and Terry Hayes, in November’s race for governor. Both Mills and Hayes, who currently serves as state treasurer, will be vying to become Maine’s first woman governor.

Mills, 70, said she will run a positive campaign “about moving the state forward and about bettering the prospects for the people of Maine,” while praising the contributions of her primary opponents.

“I’m also pleased because we got to campaign for the past 11 months with such very fine people, with six other Democrats who all had the best interests of Maine at heart, who shared ideas,” Mills said shortly after the tabulations were finalized. “We got to know each other and we got to know thousands of people from across the state of Maine. I learned something new every day from the other candidates and from the people of the state of Maine: what’s going on, what needs to happen in the future, how we can move forward. It was all part of a very exciting dialogue that I wouldn’t give up for anything.”

Asked her plan for taking on Moody, Mills smiled and replied: “You’ll hear about it, in due course.”

Moody, a Gorham resident who founded an autobody repair chain, likely hinted at one of his lines of attack against Mills in his response to her victory.

“Voters are not looking for a lifelong politician or a lawyer litigator,” Moody said in a statement. ” I am a job creator who will grow and protect Maine’s economy, not a lifelong politician and lawyer.”

Moody, who ran for governor as an independent in 2010, won last week’s Republican primary outright, avoiding a ranked-choice tabulation by capturing 56 percent of the vote in the four-person race.

Cote, a retired major in the Army Air National Guard as well as an attorney and renewable energy entrepreneur, vowed to support the nominee and urged other Democrats to do the same.

“Janet Mills won this race,” he said. “She was strong everywhere across the state, as her vote totals show. Our primary is over and it is time for all Democrats and all Mainers who want to see a better future for our state to get involved and help Janet run the strongest campaign possible and win in November.”

With the ranked-choice tabulations now complete, the primary results set up a race between a businessman with no political experience but who surprised many with his margin of victory in the Republican primary and a Democratic attorney general with decades of experience in state politics. The pair and the two independents will be vying to replace Gov. Paul LePage, a controversial and brash-talking Republican still beloved by many in his party but strongly disliked by many Democrats.

Mills rose to the top of a seven-person Democratic field in which candidates shared many of the same policies but had starkly different backgrounds and styles for achieving those goals.

During the primary campaign, Mills emphasized her track record to standing up against LePage and President Trump as attorney general, as well as her electability in rural Maine because of her roots in the 2nd Congressional District. She also pledged to work to improve jobs and Maine’s economy, to expand broadband internet access in rural Maine, to put a higher emphasis on addressing the state’s opioid crisis, to embrace Medicaid expansion and to bring a more civil tone to Augusta than under LePage.

Although ranked-choice voting has been used in several cities across the country – including Portland, Maine’s largest municipality – last week’s Maine primaries were the first time in the nation the process was used in statewide elections. The system was also considered a wild card in the two crowded primaries for governor.

Under the ranked-choice system, voters select candidates in order of preference. If no candidate receives more than 50 percent of the vote in the first count, the candidate with the fewest first-choice votes is eliminated. Voters who preferred the eliminated candidate would then have their ballots added to the totals of their second-ranked candidates, and the ballots would be retabulated. The process continues until one candidate has a majority and is declared the winner.

The scene at the ranked-choice voting tabulation headquarters was electric – and decidedly jovial – Wednesday night as dozens of people crammed into a small conference room to watch the final calculations. Thousands more were watching various livestream videos of the proceedings online, hoping to see not only the results but the unprecedented process play out.

The standings in the Democratic primary did not change between the first-choice votes cast on Election Day and the final tabulations after accounting for the ranked-choice system, although the margins did shift.

Mills led Cote 33 percent to 28 percent – or by 6,252 votes – after Election Day, according to results supplied by the Secretary of State’s Office on Wednesday night. However, by the time the other five candidates’ votes had been reallocated using the ranked-choice system, Mills’ lead over Cote had increased to 9,487 votes.

In the fourth and final round of tabulations, more supporters of third-place finisher Betsy Sweet favored Mills over Cote, pushing the attorney general over the 50 percent threshold.

“I think it did elevate the level of civility of the campaign, despite some of the foolishness towards the end,” Mills said, an apparent reference to the increasingly negative tone and attack ads between Mills, Cote and their supporters in the final weeks. “Overall, it was a much better-run campaign than it would have been and everybody’s campaign was better than it would have been without ranked-choice voting.”

After an eight-day wait to learn the identity of the party nominee, Maine Democratic Party chairman Phil Bartlett said that Mills “has always been a champion for Maine.”

“We know that she will fight for a fair economy with good-paying jobs, for affordable, accessible health care, and for real solutions to the opioid epidemic and the crisis of skyrocketing childhood hunger in our state,” Bartlett said in a statement. “We know that she will fight to fix the failures of the LePage administration and will work to end the dysfunction that Governor LePage has brought to Augusta by reaching across the aisle to get things done on behalf of hardworking Maine people.”

The ranked-choice process played out largely along the timeline that Secretary of State Matt Dunlap’s office outlined the week before the June 12 primaries. Because of the logistics of gathering so many ballots in one central location and then loading them into the computers, Dunlap had said results would likely not be available until this week.

On Wednesday, Dunlap said he was pleased with the way his staff handled the challenge of implementing the new system.

“We have the best elections division in the country,” Dunlap said. “Everything came together very nicely, but through a lot of hard work. We’re very pleased that this went so smoothly. I think people can trust the results.”

Likewise, Kyle Bailey with the Committee for Ranked Choice Voting, which led the two ballot initiatives to implement the process, called Wednesday a historic day as Maine successfully utilized a system that he says will lead to better, more broadly supported candidates.

“I have confidence in the system,” Bailey said. “It’s the system that we used to tabulate the ranked-choice voting results is the same system that we have relied in Maine for a decade to conduct our elections.”

Events on the horizon: NC Tech Tour, Teradata Innovation Forum, COME TECH OUT Job Fair & more

Plenty of technology and life science events are on tap for June, and we suggest you pencil them into your calendar.

This week’s “On the Horizon” column is paired with a separate preview of the Black Enterprise Entrepreneurs Summit, held June 6-9 in Charlotte.

Keeping track with our initiative to spotlight North Carolina startup and tech events, WRAL TechWire’s weekly “Headliners” column is now divided into two parts—inside and outside the Triangle.

Following is a list of May meetups, conferences, workshops, socials and networking events happening in Asheville, Charlotte, the Piedmont Triad, and other areas throughout North Carolina.

Applications are officially open for NC IDEA’s Micro-Grants Pilot Program. Grants—$1,000 to $10,000—will be awarded to early-stage companies seeking to validate and advance their ideas. Recipients will receive mentorship and assistance from NC IDEA and access to its network.

Learn how to evaluate a startup investment deal in this workshop hosted by The Collider. Isaac Pino, an investment manager at Huckleberry Capital Management, will lead the session, showing attendees what investors need to know before investing and what entrepreneurs need to do to attract investors.

Asheville’s entrepreneurial community meets weekly to hear local startups’ pitches and support one another in continuing to grow. For this week’s event, 1 Million Cups Asheville will feature a presentation from FernLeaf Interactive CEO Jeff Hicks.

May 16, 4-6 p.m. @Hilton Charlotte Center City Ballroom

This event features pitches from the latest cohort of the Joules accelerator, plus presentations from industry guest speakers and a cocktail reception hosted at the Gas Power Conference.

May 16-17 @Hilton Charlotte Center City

This conference convenes leaders and representatives of the U.S. power industry to discuss the most important issues facing the natural gas-fired generation market.

On the third Wednesday of every month, the Queen City’s entrepreneurial community joins together for an evening of networking and connections over free beer and snacks.

May 17, 8:30-9:30 a.m. @Innovate Charlotte Venture Hub

Join for a conversation over breakfast with the economic development and entrepreneurship community of Charlotte.

At this workshop, participants will learn how to design an engaging, user-friendly website that represents their brand well.

Learn how to attract investors at this workshop led by Porter Bayne, founder, fundraiser and head of product for Antenna and co-founder and bootstrapped fundraiser of Potlukk.

May 17, 5:30-8 p.m. @Jay Hurt Hub for Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Davidson

In celebration of Female Founder’s Month, the newly expanded Startup Grind Triad is hosting two fireside chats featuring Tech Talent South CEO and Co-Founder Betsy Idilbi. This is Part 1 of a two-part program. Part 2 will be held in Winston-Salem on May 22.

Three Charlotte entrepreneurs—Dina Carey of Milkful, Haley Bohon of Skillpop and Meggie Williams of The Waggle Company—return from the latest class of Techstars Austin to share the experience with the Queen City community.

Ventureprise, a winner of NC IDEA’s ecosystem grant, invites early-stage startups in Charlotte and Western North Carolina to apply to its customer discovery program, Ventureprise Launch. It covers all the components an early-stage entrepreneur should need to build their business, from opportunity assessment to business model generation to forming a commercialization strategy.

May 21-22 @UNCW Swain Center

In this workshop, participants will learn the knowledge and skills needed to compete in today’s marketplace with a Certified Global Business Professional (CGBP) credential.

May 21-24 @Charlotte Convention Center

The Connectivity Expo (Connect X) showcases the latest innovative connectivity solutions driving the future of communications. Sessions will cover a range of topics, from private LTE networks to macro cells to innovations in infrastructure to connected property. Keynote speakers represent industry-leading companies including Dish, Verizon, NASCAR and AWS.

May 22, 12-1 p.m. @The Collider

At this workshop, serial entrepreneur and angel investor Tom Ryan will provide an overview of the most common sales landmines and offer tips on how to deal with them.

May 22, 5:30-8 p.m. @Flywheel Coworking

In celebration of Female Founder’s Month, the newly expanded Startup Grind Triad is hosting two fireside chats featuring Tech Talent South CEO and Co-Founder Betsy Idilbi. Part 1 is in Davidson on May 17, and this event will be part 2.

RIoT’s 25th event is all about how public/private partnerships are adopting Internet of Things to revolutionize parking, transit and other areas of public importance. Food and drinks will be provided.

Innovate Charlotte, an arm of the Charlotte Regional Fund for Entrepreneurship, is seeking applicants for its upcoming pilot program, which aims to serve entrepreneurs looking to bring their startups to the next level. Five companies will be admitted to the three-month mentorship program.

May 29, 12-1 p.m. @The Collider in Asheville

Learn all about Guerilla Usability studies at this workshop hosted by The Collider and led by Dave Michelson, an applied research software designer at UNC Asheville’s National Environmental Modeling and Analysis Center.

Asheville’s entrepreneurial community meets weekly to hear local startups’ pitches and support one another in continuing to grow. For this week’s event, 1 Million Cups Asheville is hosting Safe Plus More following the startup’s third-place win at Hatch AVL Demo Day.

May 2, 5:30-7 p.m. @The Creative Community Lab

Applications are live for Creative Startups Winston-Salem’s eight-week virtual business accelerator. Drop by this info session to hear an overview of the program and learn how to apply. The application deadline is June 3.

At this event, part of Innovate Charlotte’s team mentorship program, serial entrepreneur Mac Lackey will share his experiences with mentorship and growing startup companies.

Join the 14th annual Red Hat Summit for two days of exploring topics surrounding cloud computing, platform, virtualization, middleware, storage and systems management technologies.

A handful of Queen City-based companies will headline May’s Charlotte PitchBreakfast, presenting their products and services for a total of five minutes, after which they will answer questions from the audience and a panel of experts.
