It's a bit frightening to realise the extent to which small, insignificant decisions can have a definitive influence on the course of a life.
For example, in 1999, I received a phone call; without really knowing why, I picked up, even though I was already late; it was a recruiter offering me an interesting job. Note that 2 minutes later, I wouldn't have answered. In short, I joined her company, met my wife there, we got married, and as she was from Tarbes, we ended up settling in Bigorre, a land where I had no ties whatsoever. One thing led to another and we built our lives, and here I am, almost 25 years later, at 7.50pm in a supermarket on the edge of Bagneres de Bigorre, looking for something to make a pot au feu because ... my dear ... I really want a pot au feu ... and what woman wants ...
Well, it's staggering to think that if I hadn't answered that phone call, I might have been out looking for stuffed zucchinis in Palavas les Flots or even, who knows, andouillette de Guemene in Pattaya!

Peter Sagan doesn’t have the legs – or perhaps just doesn’t fancy – for the stage win.
He’s dropped back with Edvald Boasson Hagen, Cees Bol, Dylan Groenewegen, Alexander Kristoff and Tom Scully from the rest of the break.

We should see other sprinters and lead out men start to drop away on this punishing category one climb.
Their work is done for the day now the intermediate sprint is over.
The break will be whittled down to the contenders for the stage win.
Who do you think is favourite for today’s stage? Let me know on #bbccycling

Colbrelli dropped
A game effort by sprinter Sonny Colbrelli but he can’t stay with Lilian Calmejane on these slopes.
Calmejane, who spent yesterday in the break as well, now leads by himself out front.

French TV are saying that Bahrain-Merida can’t tell them why Rohan Dennis abandoned just now. As in they don’t know why. Right.

So that’s the intermediate sprint at Bagneres-de-Luchon done.
The break will soon head on to the lower slopes of the famed Col de Peyresourde before a descent that leads into another category one climb, Hourquette d’Ancizan.
Then it’s another descent into the finish at Bagneres-de-Bigorre.

Sagan wins intermediate sprint
Water is wet, the Pope is Catholic and Peter Sagan wins more points in the green jersey competition.
Sonny Colbrelli pushed the Slovakian all the way but Sagan was never going to let him win there, adeptly timing his kick off team-mate Daniel Oss’ wheel to take the maximum 20 points on offer at the line.
Colbrelli second, with Alexander Kristoff third and Jasper Stuyven fourth.

Oss has Sagan on his wheel, with Colbrelli, Kristoff and Stuyven in contention.

The break are approaching the intermediate sprint.
Roger Kluge has tried a long attack to try and take points off Peter Sagan for team-mate Caleb Ewan, who is not in the break.
But Sagan’s team-mate Daniel Oss has tracked him down.

Dennis abandons
A key abandonment on the road to Bagneres-de-Bigorre today.
Australian Rohan Dennis has become the latest rider to withdraw from the 2019 Tour de France.
World time trial champion Dennis was one of the favourites for victory in tomorrow’s individual time trial stage in Pau. Particularly gutting from him as it’s the only ITT in the race.
Dennis was on the attack early, trying to get in the break. Perhaps he was hoping to get in there and just nurse himself to the finish to stand a chance of racing tomorrow. There has been some illness going round the Bahrain-Merida team.

Points classification standings
Peter Sagan (Svk/Bora-Hansgrohe) – 257 points
Elia Viviani (Ita/Deceuninck Quick-Step) – 184
Sonny Colbrelli (Ita/Bahrain-Merida) – 174
Michael Matthews (Aus/Sunweb) – 167
Caleb Ewan (Aus/Lotto Soudal) – 148

Post update
A fairly easy pace set by Deceuninck Quick-Step and Team Ineos on the front of the peloton as the riders finish off their lunch with around 10km to go until the intermediate sprint.
The peloton will not be remotely fussed by that sprint today, with points only on offer for the first 15 riders, which will all come from the breakaway.

Nizzolo abandons
Sadly no surprise – Dimension Data sprinter Giacomo Nizzolo is forced to abandon the 2019 Tour de France after a heavy crash yesterday.
The Italian fell in the crash that saw Niki Terpstra abandon with around 30km to go on stage 11. He got up and rode to the finish but his kit was shredded and he looked in a lot of pain.
A brave effort to try and get through today but it’s proven too much for the 30-year-old.

Ireland’s Dan Martin won the last time a Tour de France stage finished in Bagneres-de-Bigorre, holding off Jakob Fuglsang in a thrilling finish in 2013.
Martin is ninth on GC as it stands so hasn’t been allowed up the road and, barring the break completely falling apart, won’t be winning this one.
He drifts to the back of the pack for a while before making his way through the bunch again.
