in this conversation i think it’s important to make note of the example he gave, indigenous mexicans wanting phoenix, because actually it’s a little wrong. both Israelis and palestinians are indigenous to the area. just like the hundreds of indigenous tribes of the americas all indigenous to the same general place. we shouldn’t be fighting each other over the land in the sense that land back means indigenous peoples fighting colonizers for the land. because both Israelis and palestinians are indigenous, and it’s not a fight we should be having with each other. we should all be fucking pissed at the outsiders who kept fucking it up for the rest of us and continue to fuck it up for us to this day with this “only one can be the TRUE indigenous people” bullshit.

Summary:  Seven years after Fire Lord Zuko ended the war, a young servant accidentally burns the Fire Lord and sees a side of him that he didn’t expect.

It’s POV outsider, which happens to be a trope I really like about this particular brand of fic, and has healthy amounts of Zuko being a considerate ruler and very dad-like to a younger, newer member of the kitchen staff

Now, after a few wild fights, the old banished Prince is sitting on the throne and leading their nation. What are they supposed to make of it all? Summary:  Toph says, “It’s never nice when someone tries to make you feel small. Especially when they’re grown adults who should know better.” Zuko blows out a breath. “Yeah. It’s--yeah.”  Toph and Zuko, protecting each other at cross-national balls.

Some Toph and Zuko bonding, well after canon events. I adore them in canon and it’s a pity we didn’t get to see more of Zuko appreciating Toph’s bluntness.

Summary: When Zuko dashes into the sitting room, it is with the same wide-eyed panic that he ran from Azula’s smoking hands when he was a child. Iroh bites down on a smile. Zuko looks the same, even now, a decade later with a scar blossomed over one side of his face, green and brown robes replacing the solitary reds of his childhood. His hair is puffed up around his face. He looks like a very frightened, very windswept turtle-dove. Zuko dives behind Iroh just as Aang breezes to a stop in the doorway. Five times Zuko hid behind Iroh, plus one time Zuko stood proudly in front of him.

Another 5+1 story, but this one’s kind of cheating - some of the scenes happen before and during canon, and not necessarily when Zuko’s appointed Fire Lord - but it’s so well-written and most of it fits this category anyway

Summary: The director could get on his knees, and talk about honouring Zuko all he liked, but it didn’t erase the fact that the Ember Island Players had trivialised—had actively mocked—his struggles. His friends’ struggles. This man had Zuko murdered on-stage to the rapturous applause of the audience, and now he was trying to smile sweetly at Zuko, and welcome him onto his set, as if there weren’t exaggerated versions of his friend’s outfits tucked away backstage, as if he hadn’t orchestrated Aang’s death at the hands of his father— Fire Lord Zuko meets the Ember Island Players.

This is pure crack and all the best parts of it. Just... read it, it’s absolutely hilarious

Summary: The war is over, but that doesn't mean everything is fixed. The battles are fought and won, but that doesn't mean all the scars are healed. The Gaang has been through hell and back, but that doesn't mean they can't find solace with each other and the help of a good food fight. Alternatively known as that fic where Aang is stressing out and not sleeping again, Zuko finally gets to be a big brother to someone who appreciates him, politics make Zuko's head hurt, and Zuko is far too attracted to angst for his own good. Alternatively alternatively known as Zuko has weird friends but he loves them anyway. Fluff. SO much fluff. There is the GAang, acting as their own little happy family unit. And adorable, sleepy Aang. And kids dealing with stuff. And Food fights.

There’s a bit of political aftermath discussed, but that’s somewhat background compared to all the Gaang fluff

did you have a turning point where you started to see him for who he was? i can't said i was his fan but i liked him, but after his charade during the BLM protest where you can see it was so staged: the camera following him, him showing with POC. like this dude is around POC when he needed them. that situation opened my eyes

i wrote about why i got sick of him here.

i think for most of us it's becoming conscious of little things that seem indicative of more about him, but because nobody is allowed to talk about it, you just ignored it or looked away. until collectively you just have enough at some point.

the BLM stuff was one of the key turning points. him refusing to acknowledge the signs originally when they happened in 2017 or 2018. the fans starting to all hold signs. him still being too cowardly so giving an "all lives matter" type speech to try and assuage things. a journalist for i believe vice magazine saying she held up one of the signs right in front of him and he visibly "flinched" when he saw it. it had obviously become a trigger issue for him, something he clearly hated that the fans were seeking him to address.

when he held up a bunch of flags in a pile and one of them was the BLM flag so his fans claimed that as a triumph, even though it was clear he had no idea it was in the pile. him sharing a photo of the crowd with some BLM visible, his fans claiming this was him showcasing BLM, even though it wasn't him, he was just showing the crowd which were full of the signs. then finally him adding a tiny little sticker to a guitar, and the fans going out in rapture, claiming yes king, he saw them, "he gets it", he's so with them, such an activist.

then of course in 2020 when BLM became such a national movement, someone says they knew that he had deliberately planned to go to a certain place to pose in a certain position for photos, before leaving. of course taking along two random ethnic (i think one is asian?) people with him, acting like they were his good friends and like of course he knew anybody with melanin. when we've literally seen them with him at work maybe a handful of times. now how many times have they been seen with him since? it's not like they're jeff, cordon, ben, the gerbers etc.

at the same time he started following a few black models on instagram and liking their photos, as if he wanted to let us all know that yes, he thinks black women are okay to like on instagram? like, what? it was so fucking bizarre. he's never done that before or since. he seemed to think this was some legit black lives matter activism.

then in his blessed cocaine sideboob choke a woman with a view song he shares the line "riot america" inbetween all of that garbage about doing shit to a woman and other things. that's how he saw the events in america in 2020 involving civil rights for black people. riot america, moving on. that's all he managed to feel about it.

then there's the difference between him and ben winston and the azoffs, and him and i presume a catholic friend or person he knew, and zayn, the only brown member in the band. he never seemed to express the slightest bit of interest in zayn's background or pakistan heritage or islamic culture or food or traditions or language or literally anything. but he did manage to absorb as much as possible about like israel from ben/azoffs and then also got a cross/bible/crucifix necklace for someone catholic in his life. his sister has made weird islamophobic comments, one in particular i remember when she seemed to suggest that muslims in a particular area of london would lose their mind if she tried asking for a bagel in their shops. so, you know, there's THAT.

Hey! This was a lot of fun to write, so I hope it’s the kind of thing you were after. As I’m from Manchester, and it’s the city I know most about, and I know Cam likes ManU, it seemed a logical choice!

Fit As Fuck

Mickey knew it was really the soccer that had Ian wanting to visit the U.K. for their five year wedding anniversary, but he had to give his husband an A for effort in trying to convince Mickey otherwise.

“The music scene, Mick, it’s amazing! Oasis, The Smiths, Joy Division, it’s the birthplace of so many amazing bands.”

Mickey had eyed him with bemused amusement over breakfast. “Do you even know who any of those bands are?”

“All I know, Mickey, is that, after all this time, you are still my wonder wall.”

Mickey had thrown a bagel at him in response.

“But look at the architecture! It’s so gothic and badass. Would you even think this was a library? Shit, check out this cathedral! Holy shit, they have a Gotham hotel! It’s beautiful.”

“Sure, the ‘architecture’,” Mickey had snorted.

“Look at all this crime history, Mick! Gangsters, prisons, drug crime through the ages. This place has been a thug paradise since 79 AD!”

“You even know what AD means?”

“Well, no. But it’s most famous prison is called Srangeways, is haunted as shit, and held one of the longest prison riots back in the nineties…caused a ton of damage.”

Okay, so maybe that was kind of neat.

“There’s a masked activist who messes with the cops, helps out the homeless, and gives out weed for free in the city centre.”

“Good man.”

“Holy crap, just look at all these street food markets. Hey! This one makes fun of hipsters, you love to make fu—”

“Alright, enough!” Mickey had finally snapped around day nine of back to back city facts. He’d accepted his fate four days ago and just wanted to see how long Ian would last, but he finally had to admit defeat.

“Does that mean…”

Mickey had sighed and grumbled, “Yeah, we can go to fucking Manchester, alright?”

Which is how he ends up, a seven hour plane ride later, sitting next to some anemic looking body of water, drinking a ridiculously large beer and watching his husband from behind his sunglasses excitedly flip through leaflets.

“Who the fuck names a street *Canal* street?”

“We’re next to a canal, Mick,” Ian replies, pointing to the water beside them without looking up from the leaflets. “This is a historic part of Manchester’s famous LGBTQ scene.”

“They know there’s no C on the street sign, right?”

“Yup, it keeps getting stolen,” Ian flickers his gaze up to Mickey to give him a brief pointed glare.

“Well I didn’t fucking steal it!” Mickey protests, and Ian —the asshole— just laughs. Mickey takes another gulp of his beer and leans back in his seat, watching the colourful array of people stroll by for a few moments before turning back to his busy husband. “You know we’re only here a week, right? That looks like at least a month’s worth of shit.” He gestures to the towering stack of *must see* locations and activities and Ian looks back at him with sheepish glee.

“Well, we don’t have to do them all. We could lose a few, like, uhm…the cathedral, the science and industry museum — though that arcade game exhibition did look kind of cool.”

“Nah, don’t get rid of that one. I wanna kick your ass at old school Space Invaders.”

Ian smiles and puts the leaflet back, rummaging through for another. “Okay, so maybe we don’t *have* to go to Pieminister.”

Mickey quickly slams his beer back to the table. “Are you out of your damn mind? This is England, the home of putting random meat in a heavy pastry, drenching it in gravy and somehow making it delicious.”

“Oh, so you did read the website. Okay, we’ll keep that one too.” Ian shuffles through a few more before pulling out a sleek black leaflet with a golden shining crest. “I guess we could…” he trails, looking up at Mickey with those big stupid puppy eyes.

Mickey sighs. “Don’t even think about it, dumbass. I’m not having you drag me halfway across the damn planet to the city of your soccer dreams only to have you mope around the damn place all week.”

“So, you mean, we can go?” Ian looks all dopey and hopeful and it still manages to make something flip in Mickey’s stomach.

He reaches for his backpack and pulls the crumpled envelope out of the side pocket before tossing it to Ian. “Here, Red. No more pouty face.”

Ian slips a finger into the torn envelope and pulls out the two tickets. He gasps. “Mick! This is…are these…oh my god. You got us box seats to the Man U v Arsenal match tomorrow!”

Mickey shrugs like it’s nothing, like he hasn’t been trying to arrange this for weeks, like he didn’t have to become bffs with the hotel manager and promise to call her stalker ex and threaten to disembowel him in his most threatening ‘American bad boy’ tone.

“Yeah, and what?”

Ian scrambles to stand, yanking Mickey out of his seat so he can pull him into a thankful kiss, holding Mickey’s face in both hands as he softly devours Mickey whole.

They don’t stop until a passing couple wolf whistles at them, one of them calling “Get a room!” only for the other to argue “No way, they’re fit as fuck!”

Ian pulls back with a giggle, and as Mickey stares into his husband’s shiny happy eyes, he can’t help but agree (whatever the hell ‘fit as fuck’ means).
