Heyo! I was just scrolling through your posts again and regarding a beach episode, I gotta know how you headcanon what they would wear in this episode! Ik Daniel ends up getting pretty ripped by the end of the series but in the beginning he’s kinda squishy (my mom used that word to describe him in regards to his general vibes in fights LOL) and I feel like he could look very smol and soft in a beach episode 🥺 or maybe I’m a simp lol
Hope your day off went well and no pressure to do this request! :)
- geekygumiho
Ahhh yes the beach episode post I remember it like it was made in a drunken haze at a frat house! But yes I usually refer to my blog as season 3.5 of Stargate so Daniel would still be in is squishy era kind of.
As we all know, beach episodes, historically speaking, are gratuitous, toe-curling, tooth-rotting fan service. My dream beach episode is kind of like that but like I gotta be realistic here: most of them would rather be on base. Here r the fits I think they’d be wearing for @geekygumiho
Jack: A middle aged man in the 90s? He’s wearing the Steven Page Special: cargo shorts, Birkenstocks with socks and an open Hawaiian shirt. He also is definitely sporting Oakley sunglasses and an Air Force ball cap. I think he’s mostly there because he was promised he could fish but is enjoying the vibes anyway. Very much chilling with a corona on the beach watching Sam everyone having fun
Teal’c: okayokayokay so this is tricky because he has a gaping hole in his torso with a little worm in it and as much as I want this to be fan service I can’t fully abandon canon and potentially have just random ass tourists see The Worm Pouch. Instead he will be wearing a tight-fitting black tank top, Star Wars swim trunks from Walmart, and a cowboy hat. He also wears Birkenstocks but with no socks because it was ✨the 90s✨ and we all know that the ugliest, sturdiest, and most comfortable piece of German footwear engineering took America by storm at that time.
Sam: I feel like Sam in probably a two-piece girly but spends most her time on the beach in a Stevie Nicks style cover-up. If Edge of 17 comes on the radio BACK UP because she needs twirling room. The beach is 100% where she lets loose and will not stop ogling Jack as subtlety as she can. She’s also learning how to surf from Janet and Janet was the one who convinced her to wear a bikini.
Daniel: this man did not want to go to the beach. He did not own beach clothes. He’s there because everyone was calling him a killjoy. He had to go to Target last minute to pick up his beach clothes. He wears the only pair of board shorts he could find in his size that just happen to have a Hawaiian shirt print on them and he also wears his floppy hat so he doesn’t get sunburned. Adding to that, whenever he’s on the beach he is re-applying sunblock and occasionally will keep his plaid shirt on but unbuttoned so his arms don’t get burned.
Janet: she’s the reason they all went and she is surfing or absolutely crushing her competition in beach volleyball. She’s also mad into sun protection but still wears a bikini. If she feels so inclined she’ll use a silk kimono as a cover up but mostly she’s there because she knows she’s the absolute hottest thing under the sun.

Charité, season 4 - episode 2
Onward and upward, or maybe downward. Abandon all unspoileredness, ye who enter here.
Everyone's whining about wanting to go to the beaches. It's 2049; have you looked at the ozone layer? Just stay home in your bathtub, you're safer there.
Love how they depict demonstrators who fight for social equity as rude, nonsensically pushy, and prone to verbal abuse. Kiss my red proletarian ass and ACAB.
Enter Discount Daniel Sträßer. Gotta love his style; they make him look like a gay stereotype all while he's eyeing up Marlene. Can't get too queer here.
You know, for people who have been in a locked-in state for months or years, they all look remarkably physically fit.
Now Seda is snippy to Julia, too? Why does everyone snap at her?
Cool, an ancient disease from the ice. I remember a Stargate SG-1 episode with the same plot point.
"You talk like a politician" - yeah, perhaps because you're trying to load a politician's responsibility on her.
Discount Daniel Sträßer really thinks a discreet lil' tiara is such a bad fashion statement that it makes a more risky treatment of his epilepsy preferable? Whatevs, honey. If anyone ever wants to implant a chip into my head, I'll riot.
Why is everyone so awkward? Don't they have good actors or is the script so bad that they didn't feel like putting some life into it?
Accidentally pouring stuff over her bacteria? Woo. I can hear Alexander Fleming roll his eyes at the subtle reference.
I just realized that Timur Işık doesn't actually have a scar on his cheek. Why did they add one? Does that serve a purpose for his character? Does it belong to the "jumped from a rock into the sea" story? Because that doesn't sound so much like an accident as a suicide attempt.
Maral and Julia still don't look natural when they kiss.
She accuses him of not taking socially and financially disadvantaged people into regard, and he quotes Margaret Thatcher at her? LMAO
Heh. Seda may be self-righteous and difficult to talk to, but I like her passive-aggression against Minister Blowhard.
Yet another scene of people taking Julia's friendliness weirdly. Is everyone autistic in 25 years?
Aw, I like Marlene and Discount Daniel Sträßer together (yes, the character's name is Lou, who cares). Perhaps because I'm desperate for a little actual chemistry and people not being awkward to each other all the time.
If this wing of the hospital isn't even in use anymore, why are the lights on everywhere?
The bad horror movie of last year called; it wants its walk alone through an abandoned hospital hallway scene back.
Seda has some serious balls, but just tossing Marlene into her shenanigans without asking is less than ideal.
"Operating with outdated machinery" - chill out; haven't you watched the earlier seasons? They've operated people with a dirty knife, some curses and prayers, in candlelight, and with no clean water, and yet they lived on to make mediocre TV.
Ok, so this is neat and all, but couldn't they have managed working through that with regular psychotherapy? He's not even a psychologist; he's a neurologist, isn't he?
Also. I re-checked the scene. I thought the girl just spoke with her mother's accent since it's not the father's - but the mother doesn't have that accent either. So where did the kid pick it up? Do the children of the 2040s not learn speaking from their parents?
We have yet another parent unloading their issues on their kid. Hurray. Dude, good parenting is definitely not forbidding your daughter to grieve just because you can't handle it.
"Shooting people more precisely will make it all more safely, and so I shall bring peace." I hate this kid. Are we going to back to war is cool again? And Julia is presented as an unreasonable nag for being opposed to it. Fuck this.
Real cool of Maral to fuck off from an argument with her wife to go be a workaholic. God forbid we communicate about our discrepancies. Nah, talk to some bacteria instead.
When you only have 6 episodes at your disposal, it's really not good form to wait with introducing major players up until episode 2. I know Ferhat already showed up in episode 1, but only to be inexplicably rude to Julia for a few seconds. And Discount Daniel Sträßer is entirely new to the bunch. Even if I'm biased against the premise, I think this could have been done better.

weekly round-up in media [29 jan-4 feb 2023]
~ sp*ilers for 609 Bedtime Story, A League of Nobleman, The New Employee, and Never Let Me Go ~
[listening]
Monsta X’s “The Dreaming” album - new discovery and I’ve had it on repeat
[reading]
Imago series by NR Walker - short and sweet adult contemporary mlm romance set in Australia; come for the romance, stay for the butterfly conservation and near-death experiences - reread
Pocketful of Soul by @jenroses - Mo Xuanyu-centric MDZS time travel fix-it and one of my 2022 favorites - reread
Dawn Will Break by ca_pierson and darkmoore - Stargate Atlantis AU - Written for the 2010 Big Bang, this is one of my favorites. A bare bones summary: After dying, John Sheppard dimension hops into multiple versions of himself to fix whatever is wrong there, at the behest of the Ancients. - reread
[watching]
609 Bedtime Story - Well that was a way to end it I guess. I did like how they resolved things with Mint, but I was hoping she’d figured out the connection between Mum and Dew. But that would mean talking about the parallel world again and they apparently decided that the entire conceit of the show didn’t matter anymore after ep 9. I’m so annoyed. (Edit: I just found out there is an alternate ending airing next week; most likely an ‘unhappy’ ending. What are you doing, show? I’m not even mad about it, just more confused.)
A League of Nobleman - The show I’m enjoying the most this week. I didn’t expect such gorgeous visuals in a historical mystery that isn’t a fantasy. There’ve been two mysteries so far and the second one involved a serial killer. I enjoyed the heck out of that arc. I have affectionately nicknamed Zhang Ping ‘Eyebrows’ in my head because those are some fantastic ones he’s sporting. Kudos to the makeup team.
The Lost Tomb (2015) - Binged most of season one last night and I’m hooked. This is amazing. Also, surprise Yang Yang! (I’d forgotten why it was on my watchlist, so he must be why.) The quality level is about late 90s/early 2000s but that was early fandom in my life, so nostalgia is hitting me hard. I’m having a great time with this one.
The New Employee - Seven episodes feels like a weird episode count for a series, but okay - I watched the last two episodes back to back and loved how they ended it. I do find it interesting however, that we never saw the ex/crush again after he was the trigger for the main relationship blip. It felt like they were going to take that further. I probably should have waited to binge this in one go, because I had completely forgotten that there was a manager who could cause trouble until he caused trouble. These short form dramas are generally pretty frustrating to watch because I can clearly see a longer (usually better) show around them. This one did feel complete, but I’m hoping they release a movie version.
[anticipating]
SHINee - Key’s album repackage is this month! Onew finished recording something! Minho is too tall! Taemin D-57!
[random notes from my tv journal]
609 Bedtime Story, ep 11 - “The kissing sounds don’t match the video?!” (This show botched the ending so bad, in multiple ways. This particular way made me laugh though.)
A League of Nobleman, ep 6 - “Surprise serial killer! Neat!”
My School President, ep 9 - “Gun and Tinn’s little scene on the beach while spying on Sound gave me major ‘future old married couple’ feelings.” (And now I want to read that future fic where Gun is home on break from touring and teasing his doctor husband into relaxing after a stressful shift.)
Never Let Me Go, ep 8 - “That was an extremely ominous music cue to tag the bathroom confrontation scene with.” (Up until that last moment it felt like any other scene in this show, but the music change elevated it and made it seem like Ben was going to come back and murder the kid. It threw me out of the scene it was such a jarring escalation. I may go back and watch it again, to see how it feels on rewatch.)

Not to sound like a boomer but I genuinely am starting to feel that Netflix is one of the worst things that happened to television.
It’s all the same now.
And I don’t mean like, genre diversity. I mean the art form. Like Netflix has really just cursed the world with television that now has an absolutely breakneck, relentless pace. So few shows are casually watchable anymore. It’s hard for me to find good new comfort shows. All of mine are older. Seasons used to have 15-30 episodes, sometimes more! They used to be episodic. So you could literally just drop in at any point in a season, nearly, without having to remember where you’re at or be sucked in by cliffhangers for twelve hours. You could just sit down with your favorite characters for one episode and be done.
And sure, people still marathoned favorites, but that wasn’t the norm. And the thing is, shows like Psych, Stargate SG-1, Babylon 5, Doctor Who etc? I remember distinct episodes. I can name them, and I’ll go back and rewatch them over and over again independently. With newer shows I just don’t. If you ask me to name an individual episode of Cobra Kai, I can’t. If I’m rewatching then I’m rewatching the whole damn show and I just don’t have that kind of time, usually, so then I just don’t rewatch and it’s onto the next series— which gets super exhausting. Sometimes I don’t want that commitment.
And you lose a lot of character depth in my opinion. The beauty of episodic longform shows is in the sheer room you have. Yes. Seasons had arcs, but usually the plots were contained to an episode and the season arc was purely character development. And you had room for dumb episodes where characters go to the beach, or a party, or just dick around and live their lives. The viewer had time to get attached— which is why so many older shows still have such strong, old, thriving fanbases who are immensely loyal to their show.
And also??? Shows didn’t used to be cancelled for a bad first episode or season. That’s not normal!!? Netflix and other provider’s habits of cancelling shows that “flop” in their first three episodes or first season isn’t normal. With older shows it was just sort of accepted: the pilot and first season are like the first ugly pancake. Give the show some time. And that time is worth it. That’s why shows could run episodically for 6, 7, 14, 20 seasons, because people just accepted that some seasons are better than others and that’s okay. Some episodes are better than others. Shows didn’t used to rely on cliffhangers to keep their audience. They relied on characters. That was what we were watching them for and why we kept coming back.
I just really am starting to hate how every single tv show is now essentially a really long movie tbh. Give me my episodic, campy, 30-episodes a season shows back. They really are worth it and I’m so sad that those seem to be actively squished by tv providers. It’s an art form in of itself.
It’s just a symptom of late stage capitalistic churning of things for mass, quick comsumption. Like the fast fashion of film. Don’t get me wrong, I have a lot of new favorite shows I genuinely enjoy like Schitt’s Creek, House of the Dragon, Cobra Kai, Gentleman Jack, etc, but I just wish I had more options in terms of length/number of episodes/and how episodic a show is. It feels like a damn shame that episodic shows are being pushed out in favor of quick, bingeable ones. It also feels like writers are no longer being given the time to really craft a good story. There’s so much pressure and time crunching from studios and drive to cram your story into less than twelve episodes and that’s why you get, rather than a mediocre season, absolutely genuinely ruined seasons like the last season of Game of Thrones and the most recent season of Stranger Things. Both literally needed more episodes to make their story make sense. (If we ignore the dumb bran ending.)
Anyway this is your latest “old man yells at cloud” by your friendly neighborhood old person. Thanks for coming to my tedtalk.

ok i like cliche’s and am ignoring writers block.  here’s a list of scifi narrative cliches that i think would be fun to explore in the apex fancreationverse- i got a little rambly but here we are (no ship suggestions or anything of the like, just plot pitches)
(this is just things that jump to mind as ‘logical’, but like.... who cares? It’s a piece of fiction first and foremost, but it’s also set in a future time where science has done incredible and almost magical shit. do whatever you want if you like an idea off here(but please ping me i wanna see👁👁))
Bodyswapping - makes the most sense between the simulacra and if we push it, mrvns. Ash / Revenant / Pathfinder bodyswap? I think Path running around in Revenant’s body could be fucking hilarious. But imagine Rev with Ash’s giant ass knife.
Time loop - ok ive started a fic for this but - It makes the most sense if you use a digital gamespace playing on loop for a technological reason. Maybe a system error or something, could be group wide or specific to some people! In TV its the easiest sort of Sci Fi Bottle Episode to justify imo, so it works GREAT here. A classic escape room in the most techy of spaces really forces someone or a group of someones to come together or break apart.
Lie Detector - A heavily character driven plot where two or more people are put in a (usually) life or death situation relying on Someone to tell the truth of a situation. example below bc i think it helps it make sense why this is on the list
Stargate SG1 did this in an episode where to confirm two character’s story of an event, they both had to undergo an alien lie detector. But because the two characters were both in MEGA denial about being in love with one another, they continued to show as lying about the events until they confronted it and accepted that that was influencing why they made their choices.
The syndicate wanting to check people’s story of a an event, say the teleporting of Olympus or a rebellion against the syndicate would work well here.
Space Beach Episode - In classic sci fi, I think this would most often be getting stranded on an alien planet but I think it could work just as well as being stuck in the ring without a way out - if you take the games to be fully physical that could take hours to days depending on how long you assume a game lasts. . i’ve actually seen a couple fics like this and they’re all AMAZING.
Time Travel - you know it, you love it! Horizon is working on this bad boy, who is to say that she doesn’t get it working! A little too well in fact! Have you considered what would happen if you accidentally sent some or all of the legends lineup to the (19)90s? Or what if you sent them even further into the future?
Classic Miscommunication - This one is not Sci Fi based, but it still would work all the same. Who is to say with so many different language speaking legends we don’t get a little miscommunication? Might be tech related or it might not! Could work as a neat little oneshot or something longer depending.
Mind wipe - Self explanitory, somebody gets more or less reset. I think this could work really well with like a drama or angst heavy plot, though it may require some setup. Someone is rebelling against the syndicate either solo or in a group, and gets captured. Perhaps before every match the syndicate takes a brainscan or makes a copy of the legend. What if that captured soul got reset back to and old scan by some means? Re educated to be the perfect little lapdog? I think there’s potential there!
Doubling up - What’s a good story with simulacra and good future science without somebody ending up getting duplicated for some reason or another? It may be accidental! Whoops i just put this 1 to 1 brain scan of XYZ legend inside this mrvn. What’re they gonna do next? Or it might be intentional - no better way to be in two places at once for hyjinks than to be two persons at once!
ok thats all ive got rn but !!! hey. here they are. let me know if you like them or especially if you’re inspired by any of them!

An Unearthly Convention
I had to leave this con a bit earlier than planned, but I had such a blast!
All the fans I chatted with were great. Some had some awesome costumes too. I saw a Cyberman, quite a few folks dressed as the 13th and 4th Doctors, and a girl cosplaying as Susan in An Unearthly Child with an uncanny resemblance to Carole Ann Ford. People were sharing Doctor Who-themed ribbons to tack onto your badges. There were two K9s playing in the hotel corridors ...
Tumblr media
Here’s one of them now!
Speaking of the hotel, things were a bit crazy due to extensive renovations going on. The lobby was reduced to pretty much nothing, but there were quite a few tables set up for people to sit and eat (and chat). I loved the format of this con so much, though. I’ve attended Creation cons in the past for Stargate and Supernatural, and this is nothing like them. It’s so much more laid back and you get more access to the guests. It’s not unusual to run into them walking around and stop and have a nice chat with them. Not long after I arrived and got my badge, I saw Katy and Frazer walking around on separate occasions, then then saw Louise who smiled and gave me a little “hello.” I also saw Paul McGann when I went to get something to eat in the restaurant, sitting at a nearby table with a couple of people.
I didn’t get to meet all of them, but the ones I did meet were wonderful. Louise is really sweet. Katy is so energetic and inspirational, and she gives great hugs. Frazer is lovely and has such a great sense of humor. John Leeson was also very sweet. During the autograph session he asked where I was from and told me how wonderful it is that people have come from all over to attend this convention.
I got two photo ops, one with Frazer and the other with John and K9. I lined up early for the first as I remember the lines at Creation conventions forming quickly (and being very long). I wasn’t expecting to be the first one and was a bit nervous, but Frazer is so friendly and approachable. He gave me a warm “Hello” and even asked if I could fix his jacket collar for him before we had the photo taken. He then asked “Can I put my arm around you?” I said “Of course!” He was really sweet and thanked me once the photo was taken. I paid extra for an electronic version but I scanned the actual photo to post here. Warning: I do not photograph well. He looks great, though.
Tumblr media
After my photo op was done I went to get autographs from him, Katy and Louise. Louise looked up at me and said “Hello! ...Again!” She was very sweet and soft-spoken. When I got Katy’s autograph, before she could sign anything she had to give me a big hug. I told her it was my first DW convention and she said “Really?” I told her I was enjoying it and she said one thing she always loved about them is how everyone just gets to be themselves at them. She said she hopes she sees me at many more conventions (and that she herself gets invited back for them!).
When I went to get Frazer’s autograph I wanted to ask him if he’d brought any of those new 2nd Doctor and Jamie figures with him, but I didn’t see anything at his table apart from the photos so I assumed he didn’t have any.
I think I love John Leeson’s autograph the best. I thought his message was so cute so I had to post it here...
Tumblr media
And here’s my photo op with John and K9:
Tumblr media
I went to Katy’s panel, which was supposed to highlight all her different voice work but they talked about a slew of different subjects. She was asked what her least favorite outfit to wear on Doctor Who was. She named a couple but one that sticks in my mind is the one from The Sea Devils - the white outfit she wore there. She said that once it got wet it shrunk something terribly. She also mentioned she’d made her voice a bit higher when she played Jo, but every so often she’d lose that and Jon Pertwee would tell her she’d sound like “the lorry driver” again. A few pics from her panel:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My pictures here aren’t too bad as I was standing up in back (the room was pretty small and was packed). Sadly I have to leave her panel about halfway through since I had the photo op with John at the time, but I did enjoy what I did get to see of it.
I then attended Frazer’s (called “The Animated Man” as it was supposed to be about the lost animated episodes). I got a closer seat for that one, but for some reason my camera decided to focus more on the people in front of me than on him. These are the best pics I could get:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I should say that the camera doesn’t do him justice. In person he’s got this very nice, youthful spark (which goes perfect with his sense of humor). He was asked about the animated episodes and he mentioned a few interesting things about The Macra Terror. The Macra was a huge and very expensive prop, and you had to literally throw yourself into it to make it look like it was attacking you. He also mentioned that he and Michael Craze had to wear this ugly orange uniform with tight Bermuda shorts. He said the animator told him “We thought it was gray” and he told them “no it was orange.”
It was mentioned that Fury from the Deep will be animated in the future and he was asked about filming it. He mentioned how cold it was when they were on location at that beach and that his knees turned blue. He also told a funny story of when they were going to do the helicopter scene. Deborah Watling told him she was afraid of heights and asked if she could get into the helicopter first and then he and Patrick could sit on either side of her. Frazer told her “Of course,” but then she looks up to find him sprinting towards the helicopter and she started shouting “You swine!!”
Interestingly he mentioned that TPTB don’t like anyone going on social media to announce anything about these episodes being done, but he did say he recently went back to the filming location with some other guy, which I’m guessing will be included with the DVD in the future. He also mentioned a few other filming stories, like Evil of the Daleks (with the “up your passage, Victoria” joke... they showed a pic of the Dalek Emporer and he remarked that it’s wearing a brassiere, LOL), the origin of the “look at the size of that, Doctor”-“Yes Jamie, it’s a big one” joke, and about how they filmed in Seville for The Two Doctors.
He mentioned he would have loved to have seen The Highlanders animated since it’s only 4 episodes and there’s no monster in it that would have people saying “Oh that doesn’t look like a Dalek (or Cyberman, etc.).” A fan asked what his favorite story was to film and he said of course The Highlanders. They mentioned one of his earlier roles in a show called The Jacobites (and that interestingly it’s available on DVD only in Germany). It was pointed out that there’s a current theme in the shows he’s done with time travel and Scotland: that show, Doctor Who and Outlander.
And finally there was a really sweet moment where someone mentioned Jamie and Victoria’s goodbye scene at the end of Fury from the Deep and how powerful it was. He said that it wasn’t really acting, it was from the heart because they felt so badly Debbie was going to be leaving. His panel was very entertaining.
I was going to stay for the 4th Doctor panel with Louise and John, but by the time I got back there the room was full. Hopefully someone else has written up an account of what was said.
Although I wasn’t there as long as I would have hoped, I had a wonderful time. I’d love to go back next year if it’ll be on again.

16 Wishes Disney Channel Original Movie Reviewed
Because sure, I can post my most recent review, but it’s kinda lame for a first Tumblr post so have this half-year old review of a nearly decade-old DCOM instead.
16 Wishes DCOM Reviewed22 today, happy birthday sweetheart! What is it? Well, that's actually an interesting question.... It's classically thought of as a DCOM...even though strictly technically speaking it isn't (yes, that's right, it means Disney Channel's official Facebook page is wrong on this!) It's really a direct-to-DVD movie that Disney Channel just happened to pick up on very, very early during the production stage (before they even decided on a lead, hence how Debby became involved) due to Disney Channel's previous relationship (and ongoing relationship, for that matter) with Mar Vista studios through a number of actual DCOMs before and since. See folks, only on this blog will you learn new facts and grow your brain right in the introductory minutiae of each and every blog post! Where did it air? Well, again, continuing the above it's actually a bit complex. Technically it did indeed premiere on Disney Channel first, but it was originally intended for DVD sales/streaming to be the primary means of distribution. Of course now it's as closely associated with the network as any other DCOM and other than directly streaming it or getting the DVD it's the only place on "traditional" television you'll find it. Who stars in it? Most prominently, Debby Ryan, who became attached to the project as soon as Disney Channel decided to throw money at it. Jean-Luc Bilodeau plays second-billing Jay - you may recognize Jean-Luc (no, not that Jean-Luc) from not only the later Mar Vista-produced DCOM Zapped! but also from the somewhat short-lived Canadian/UPN (remember that network? Probably not) production Kyle-XY as the title character. Anna Mae Routledge is Celeste "the birthday fairy" and...yeah, this is actually the biggest role she's been in (she's been in another movie we've done a mini-review on...Eurotrip, maybe?) The only other notable role is Karissa Tynes as Krista. Abby's mom is played by the same actress who played an FBI agent in...Snakes on a Plane. Yeah, really. The principal is also "Chevron Guy" from Stargate: SG-1. There's also this really gorgeous ginger with these Marianas Trench-deep blue eyes but...uhh, we'll get to that at the end I guess. Why are we reviewing this? ...well, see, there are three or so key events that lead to the creation of this very blog, and 16 Wishes is one of them. One of those events would be of course the creation of GirlMeetsWorldReviewed.Blogspot.com which directly inspired the creation of this blog. But of course there'd be no point or even capability to make this blog without material to fill it up with. That's where 16 Wishes and other things come in. Another of those events, by far the most important one, is Phineas and Ferb - or more specifically, when I just happened to chance upon Phineas and Ferb (The Chronicles of Meep specifically - I need to, like, send flowers to Povenmire and Marsh for that one, it was a real chance of fate that happened to be the first episode I saw as it was superbly excellent if not outright sublime) one night when I was desperately searching for new programming to watch. And as I describe in both my Jessie and Liv and Maddie retrospectives, this was actually critical timing because at the time I was just a few weeks off from having my ex-fiancee break up with me and less than a week from recovering from cancer-removing surgery. And not only was Phineas and Ferb the perfect TV visual comfort food at the time, but it was an immediate gateway to more visual comfort food on the network and by extension Nickelodeon (the first episode of anything I've ever watched on Disney Channel aside from The Chronicles of Meep - immediately after the Chronicles of Meep, in fact - was the second replay of the then-premiere episode of Good Luck Charlie's T-Wrecks and given the emotional state I was in, I was actually really blown away by just how well done an all-inclusive family multi-cam sitcom it was - and that was immediately followed up by the second replay of the premiere of Jessie's Gotcha Day which, well, if you want to delude yourself that Jessie is a better show than it is there are few better episodes than that to dive into). Now, here's the thing - even at that point after about a month of watching I was still on the fence about the actual quality of Disney Channel shows and Jessie especially. By that I don't mean I would've given up watching the network forever and never ever speak of the great embarrassment of being an allegedly grown-ass adult watching Disney Channel, but my viewing habits probably would be a lot like they are today - oh hey, Good Luck Charlie's on, yeah I like that show. Oh hey it's Phineas and Ferb. Oh, hey Jessie's on...I wonder what Rick on Pawn Stars is trying to rip off today. But what ended up being the real tipping point to being dedicated as an allegedly grown-ass adult to this network and becoming a Jessie super-fan (or at least the closest thing that passes for it) is this movie. I think what really resonated with this movie, again given my emotional state, is the back half where Abby finds herself turned into an allegedly grown-ass adult. Even when you're in your early 20s (as Abby finds herself), well...I'm just going to quote the speech Abby's dad gives: But being grown up is different than dreaming about it, isn't it? We understand. Of course! You're scared that your childhood is over and with it all the best times of your life! You probably wanna turn back that clock and start over? Boy I know how that feels! ...and being in my 20s...and already having been engaged in marriage, and then seeing all that blow up in my face, and then finding out I have cancer, and then dropping out of school over it...yeah, that shit gets overwhelming. You spend a lot of time thinking about how not long ago all you needed to do was wake up and go to school and everything else is provided for you, and you all of a sudden find yourself in that same situation, just minus the school, and at least just old enough so that it all feels familiar but at the same time a bit weird. Nostalgia is not perfect, and it can even be a dangerous thing - I've dedicated very large portions of this very blog about how nostalgia effectively stunted if not outright ruined Girl Meets World from its very conception. But we keep coming back to it because it's comfortable. Girl Meets World was greenlit and conceived, arguably, because it was a return to a very comfortable concept, a concept that was successful in its heyday and it was thought would be successful because that previous success had grown itself into its fanbase to provide comfort (again, Christian and Sean have talked about the comfort aspect of the original show). And when you're in a position where comfort starts being medicine, nostalgia is a very powerful thing to go back to. My point being, girls who were 16 but accidentally wish themselves to be 22 as they walk out of a store dressing room and wishing they can just go back to school and live with their parents again and guys who actually are 22 (well, older than that even) but got kicked out of their fiancee's life so hard they apparently literally got cancer over it and had to move back in with their parents have a lot in common with each other. Of course, that's just my perspective. But also keep in mind that apparently this little movie gave Debby enough clout, at least on the network, to where Disney Channel ultimately decided to greenlight her own show which of course became the 101-episode (not 98!) long series Jessie. No, really, it got one of the highest adult demos of its night. It's really my theory that this message about childhood nostalgia, whether intended or not, proved to be a big hit with Millennials. I mean, think about it. We're supposedly the "never grow up" generation - we have high unemployment, low independent housing, yadda yadda. Abby's words about feeling like we're 16 and then suddenly 22 and needing a job and a means to afford our own place and take care of ourselves have become themes of a generation. And I'm not saying this as an insult to Millennials (being one myself of course) but that no doubt it happened to previous generations too - Gen X'ers, Baby Boomers, what have you as they suddenly find themselves transitioning from a school-focused work ethic to suddenly being in the actual work force. It's an increasingly universal theme as the world marches towards mechanization and now digitization, but it's a theme that's been rather under-represented in all but tween through young adult media. But enough of me waxing nostalgic and complaining about my personal life again, how does it rate as a movie? Well, Abby's a brat through the first part (then again that's the point) and then we kinda see her cartoon-mature and she grows up, yadda yadda. Debby's not bad at all in it, Jean-Luc captains his way through it equally respectably, Karissa is very much underappreciated, Chevron Guy makes for the second ultra-nerdy sci-fi reference in this very sentence and again if you've seen the movie you probably know who I'm talking about when I talk about this curly-hair ginger girl with these sapphire-forged eyes who's, like, so gorgeous I'd go through another round of chemo for, like I will forget about my lousy ex for her, yadda yadda. Even when trying to emotionally divorce oneself it's a pretty competent movie, and Lord knows there've been quite a few official DCOMs that don't measure up to this one (the vastly overrated Cowbelles, Teen Beach 2, yes Invisible Sister) Movie Grade: B-. Like I said, it's at least competent and enjoyable enough it deserves this. Movie MVP: That ridiculously gorgeous blue-eyed ginger, of course, for completely memorizing me in the two or three scenes she's in including the one scene where she gasps, which is the closest speaking role she has. ...just kidding, although I really do think she deserves more recognition (seriously, I don't think gingers get enough recognition for how beautiful they are, as I've again shared on this very blog before). But really, it's obviously going to be Debby, duh. This is the performance that convinced the network to give her Jessie, after all. Extra Thoughts: - Of course after mentioning that last part I guess I'm obligated to again remind you that my ex-fiancee herself is a ginger so I'm biased (and again, Debby became a fake ginger for the Jessie role so, there). - Speaking of Cowbelles, both that and 16 Wishes feature the song Don't Wanna Grow Up by the band Willknots - Uuugggh Disney Channel commercials from April leading up to the RDMAs are soooo laaaaaame. But I probably only think this because the RDMAs themselves are after-the-fact old news now. - here's a bit of trivia for you: after wishing to become popular, Abby claims that the dads of some girls are planning her birthday party in Las Vegas as they happen to own half of that town. This implies that they're direct descendants of Howard Hughes who quite literally owned half of Vegas (though it's honestly doubtful the writers really knew this at the time). - Abby's driver's license information is the following: ID #073 477 657; Class D (do note that most 16 year olds start off with a Class C license which legally permits them to drive most normal passenger cars - being too lazy to Google it, I don't even know if "Class D" is a thing); no endorsements (minor fun fact: yours truly, the author of this blog, has one endorsement: M, giving legal permission to operate motorcycles); no restrictions; Code 776-36A (whatever that means) and lists her DOB as 7/7/95 (which implies that the movie takes place very specifically on July 7, 2011 - almost exactly 11 months into the future of its original Disney Channel premiere date - and is also contradicted by the fact that in parts of the movie everyone's breath is obviously visible and many trees remain bare as they probably shot it in late February or early March of 2010) and her height as being 5'6" (which is Debby's actual height) and just as Celeste the Birthday Fairy says, the license doesn't expire - The design of the "Coastal State" license plate on Abby's car also implies this takes place in Oregon even though her license actually refers to "Coastal State" as the actual name of the state. - Abby's school, Walnut Grove, is a real school in the Vancouver area where the movie was shot. It's a private school and you can see on their website they're very proud of being the filming location for 16 Wishes. Their mascot actually is the Gators, BTW (as displayed on the school bus and Abby's lifetime lunch pass, which is modeled after the actual Walnut Grove lunch pass. Yes, I go deep into this for you - only on this blog!) - Yeah, I am waaaay behind on Andi Mack. I was hoping to binge on the backlog of episodes up to the latest today for my birthday but...yeah, forget that. We'll be resuming Andi Mack reviews tomorrow. Hopefully. - And obviously this is Part 2 of our Birthday Blog posts today, so, Happy Birthday Debby! (And Happy Birthday Me!)

WILLOW: Yeah, I heard they have them. You know, just a rumor you pick up on the streets. (They laugh.) HARMONY: You were always so funny Willow. You haven't changed a bit. WILLOW: No, you neither. HARMONY: Oh, maybe a little.
