There are moments he stands beside David, strolling down to the marketplace or even rushing headfirst into the thicket of tropical flora, and Louis feels like a stranger to himself.

Like a ghost, he aches for the long-dead memory of his life in New Orleans— the putrid swamp humidity that is nowhere near as fresh as the air in Rio, the blossom of his beloved magnolia trees, even the lights and the terrible music bleeding down from the Rue Bourbon.

Do you want to go home, Lestat asks, and even that makes him want to weep. He knows, of course, that whatever it is that they return to...it won't be the way that it was. That frightens and excites him all at once. They can never go back, only stumble forward together.
