Continue reading IR reflektierende…

Belt of Venus and Earth's shadow
The Belt of Venus is an atmospheric phenomenon visible shortly before sunrise or after sunset, during civil twilight. It is a pinkish glow that surrounds the observer, extending roughly 10–20° above the horizon. It appears opposite to the afterglow, which it also reflects.
In a way, the Belt of Venus is actually alpenglow visible near the horizon during twilight, above the antisolar point. Like alpenglow, the backscatter of reddened sunlight also creates the Belt of Venus. Though unlike alpenglow, the sunlight scattered by fine particulates that cause the rosy arch of the Belt shines high in the atmosphere and lasts for a while after sunset or before sunrise.
As twilight progresses, the arch is separated from the horizon by the dark band of Earth's shadow, or "twilight wedge". The pinkish glow is due to the Rayleigh scattering of light from the rising or setting Sun, which is then backscattered by particulates.

Word List: Glow
Tumblr media
beautiful words with "glow" for your next poem/story
Afterglow - a glow remaining where a light has disappeared; a pleasant effect or feeling that lingers after something is done, experienced, or achieved
Airglow - light that is observed especially during the night, that originates in the high atmosphere of a planet (such as the earth), and that is associated with photochemical reactions of gases caused by solar radiation
Alpenglow - a reddish glow seen near sunset or sunrise on the summits of mountains
Counterglow - gegenschein (i.e., a faint light about 20° across on the celestial sphere opposite the sun probably caused by backscatter of sunlight by solar-system dust)
Dayglow - airglow seen during the day
Evenglow - a reddish gray that is yellower and deeper than mist and lighter, stronger, and slightly bluer than opal gray
Moonglow - moonlight
Nightglow - airglow seen during the night
Reglow - to glow again or anew
Sunglow - a brownish yellow or rosy flush often seen in the sky before sunrise or after sunset that is due to solar rays scattered or diffracted from particles in the lower and upper air

2024 August 24
South Pacific Shadowset Image Credit & Copyright: Jin Wang
Explanation: The full Moon and Earth's shadow set together in this island skyscape. The alluring scene was captured Tuesday morning, August 20, from Fiji, South Pacific Ocean, planet Earth. For early morning risers shadowset in the western sky is a daily apparition. Still, the grey-blue shadow is often overlooked in favor of a brighter eastern horizon. Extending through the dense atmosphere, Earth's setting shadow is bounded above by a pinkish glow or anti-twilight arch. Known as the Belt of Venus, the arch's lovely color is due to backscattering of reddened light from the opposite horizon's rising Sun. Of course, the setting Moon's light is reddened by the long sight-line through the atmosphere. But on that date the full Moon could be called a seasonal Blue Moon, the third full Moon in a season with four full Moons. And even though the full Moon is always impressive near the horizon, August's full Moon is considered by some the first of four consecutive full Supermoons in 2024.

Yes!! Auroras can look like rainbows even though they are completely different phenomena. Auroras are caused by sun-created particles being funnelled into Earth's atmosphere by its magnetic field. It creates colours by exciting atoms at different heights. Alternately, rainbows are created by sunlight backscattering off falling raindrops, and the different colors are refracted by slightly different angles. The featured picture is composed of several images taken on the same night last month near the Skógafoss waterfall in Iceland. The photographer planned on only capturing the central band of our Milky Way galaxy over the picturesque cascade. But by luck, a spectacular aurora soon appeared just below the curving arch of the Milky Way. Far in the background, the Pleiades star cluster and the Andromeda galaxy can be found.
