And now, I realise that I have not even thought about them so clearly, but let me check my writing-mind´s wish for 2025!

🍄 Are there any fandoms you've never written for but want to try?

Well, funny, but for Jane Austen I have (not yet) written only 1 one-shot of 800 words for @firawren´s @janeuary-month event. It´s a short Darcy/Lizzy fic, just out of a spontaneous fun idea. The rections on AO3 and tumblr are stunning (it is a large fandom), and so, I might be tending to take a more serious glimpse into that direction. But tbh, it´s rather Marianne Dashwood/Colonal Brandon from Sense & Sensibility (1995 adaption with Kate Winslet / Alan Rickman) I have been secretly shipping. But as said, this fandom area is kind of new to me!

🫘 Spill the beans. What's a new project you're doing this year?

Oh, the ideas are many, my plot-bunny farm living rent free in my head... lol... but the one greater project I have set my mind and heart (which I have started lat 2024) is the following WIP:

"Love can bear uncertainty" - a frozen canon divergent au, post Frozen 2, pairing: Hans Westergaard / Constanze, baroness of Liebenstein, Bavaria (my OC) - an arranged marriage, redemption arc au.

It´s set in my series "The sight of love" on AO3, and is the 3rd work, following Love can see the good & Love can see beyond (both Kristanna fics). In Love can see beyond, Hans and Constanze are side characters, where the engagement is mentioned but not further explored, except that Anna and Kristoff are confronting Hans in an inquisitive dialogue about his attitude toward his young bride.

When I was writing that fic, I was getting rather fond of the idea to give Hans/Constanze their own story. It´s in the progress, and I have set my mind to make it a real slow-burn (which is new and tricky for me since I am a super fast-burn writer... 🫣). Saying that, I am having a lot of fun, but also nail-biting moments where I think I can´t do it. But I have time, and I don´t want to rush it - but make this a WIP which doesn´t have a necessary deadline, other than to keep loving what I do to and with them... Does that make sense (I am rambling 🫣)?

By the way, @pirate-of-the-southern-isles is a background cheer-reader of my drabbles on discord and has gifted me with this incredible fanart, and I can´t get over it of how lovely that is!!!

You: why????

You: what did you do????

Jason: answer my call hun

it takes a split second.

Suddenly your phone starts buzzing. Incoming FaceTime call from Jay in white letters scroll across your screen. The picture you have set is of him sleeping in his set chair, Jane Austen book in his lap.

The ringing coming from your phone is loud as you press the volume down button. You finger hits accept and the screen fades to black. Then the picture clears.

On your phone screen is Jason with a big grin on his face. You're not sure what he's been up to there's nothing in the background to tip you off.

"What did you do?" you ask again.

"I got you something you've been missing." he answers.

He props the phone up. You can see the familiar background now. He's in your house. You two had traded keys about a month ago and it's safe to say you've used his key more than your own key. And he yours.

Seeing him in your house isn't a surprise. What is a surprise is the coffee store sign that is leaning on your wall. The coffee sign to the shop you used to work at.

A few weeks ago you saw on social media it was closing down. It was bittersweet. You thought the place would be there forever. You thought you would work there forever. How things change!

The owner, George or "boomerang", had finally achieved his dream though. He told you it would be the only reason he closed the shop. Him and his family were moving back to Australia.

You brought it up to Jason once, exactly once, that you were sad about it. And now the sign is inside your home.

"No way!" you laugh.

"Yes way! I got there in time too, they were about to dump it." he explains.

The smile on your face reaches your eyes. You cover your mouth with your free hand. There was no way you could cry right now, not after getting finished with makeup for an interview that was about to start in a few minutes.

Jason see's how watery your eyes get. He didn't need to though. With how quickly you got silent and the way you keep looking up are all the things he needs to see to know you're getting emotional.

"Don't cry, baby." he says.

You shake your head, removing your hand from your mouth.

"Sorry, sorry. It's just really sweet. More than sweet, it's everything." you say.

"You deserve it. I can help you put it wherever you want it." he says.

In your peripheral vision you see something move. You look up. It's Iris. She must've walked in while you were on the call with Jason.

She's being touched up by the makeup artist but she's looking right at you. A smile on her face.

You nod your head, "Jay I really mean it. Thank you."

You notice the red flush across his cheek. He'd been blushing around you a lot. Ever since you two decided to finally stop beating around the bush with your feelings. He was easy to tease. All you had to do was touch him at this point and he'd go tomato red. The tips of his ears too. It's cute.

"You're buttering me up sweetheart. I'm gonna let you go though, you're gonna do great." he smiles.

"Thanks. See you later."

"Can't wait. Bye baby."

You hang up first. That was a bit common since before the two of you started this whole thing too. You would hang up first most times. And other times Jason would hang up first and still say goodbye via text.

"Hey, sorry I'm late." Iris says.

She's taking the seat in front of you now. Even though she's late she looks incredible. It's hard to believe that she just breezed in like this but it's also Iris so you wouldn't expect anything less.

"You're good. Everything went well?" you ask.

She snickers, "Yeah Nora left her favorite hair clip at home. Can't go without it."

"She's adorable I won't hold it against her." you joke.

"Thanks. Was that the co-star?" she asks.

"Technically while production is halted he's not my co-star anymore." you joke again.

Iris laughs at that. You do too. She fixes the mic on her shirt a bit.

"Right. So what do you refer to him as?"

Iris wasn't honestly expecting an answer. You were joking, the two of you had easy banter. It was refreshing. So she wasn't expecting you to say what you said. How could she? You were in the biggest will they won't they situation in Hollywood at the moment.

"Boyfriend."

She respects your privacy and keeps to the listed topics during the interview. You talk about your journey so far, your dream film projects, dream co-stars, etc.

When the interview is over Iris congratulates you and Jason on your blossoming relationship. You joke that she'll be the first to know when you two are ready to tie the knot. And she wants to desperately tell you that one of her friends, Cisco Ramon, has a prediction about you and Jason actually marrying a couple of years in the future. But she keeps that to her self.

She wouldn't tempt fate. And she liked the two of you together.

The weeks passed away quickly; and the period of Merrill’s much-anticipated travels arrived. The night before, Merrill had been so excited she thought she would not sleep; and on the morning itself she flitted about so happily and exuberantly, that Keeper Marethari could not temper her high spirits if she tried. Merrill believed that even Tamlen and Mahariel were not as happy as she was, even though they themselves were clearly excited and cheerful that morning, given they were setting off in pursuit of novelty and amusement with her. 

Tamlen himself was in such good humour that he even agreed to accompany Merrill and Mahariel in calling on the Hawke sisters before they went – although he insisted that their visit was as brief as possible, for he wanted to cross the Waking Sea and reach Ferelden well before nightfall – and this they did, although Miss Bethany was out again with her mother, and they found Miss Hawke all alone and writing a letter.  

‘Bethany will be so disappointed to have missed you,’ Miss Hawke told them, as she folded up her letter to seal it, ‘but I am thankful you decided to take leave of us before you depart for the countryside. And it is an honour, Mr Sabrae,’ she continued politely to Tamlen, ‘that you decided to accompany your wife and cousin. I bid you all safe travels and adieu, and look forward to hearing all about them when you eventually return to Kirkwall.’ 

‘I will miss you!’ Merrill cried as she hugged her friend, taking Miss Hawke so much by surprise that the latter dropped the folded letter she had been holding. ‘Oh! I am so sorry, Miss Hawke – let me get that for you—’ and here Merrill bent down to pick up the parchment that had floated to the floor; Miss Hawke had bent down for it too; but, in her nervousness at having done something wrong again, Merrill was quicker. 

As she picked up the sheet of paper, which was full with Miss Hawke’s handwriting, Merrill caught sight of the words:  

I will submit to any thing you may command me—but cease to respect, to love and adore you, I never can or will.

Darkness Lane by Joan Hassall [ x ] - the piece that most inspired my recent woodcut-style piece.

When I found out I was drawing for @gorgeousundertow's regency AU fic, Half Agony, Half Hope, as part of the @ineffableidiotsbigbang, I started looking up Jane Austen novel illustrations for inspiration and ended up finding some really cool art and websites! I'm posting about some of the images and resources I found because I think it may be interesting to others too (and even if it isn't, I'll have gotten the infodump out of my system haha).

The link above points to a gallery on pemberley.com which has deliciously old-school DIY website HTML and a wealth of Jane Austen illustrations, as well as references for regency clothing. This was where I discovered Joan Hassall's work and decided I wanted to do a woodcut style piece (and then subsequently regretted it many times during the process of making it because I had no idea what I was doing). The detail, visual texture and dramatic lighting in her work is so cool and I just got more obsessed the more I saw.

The gallery on pemberley.com also had a bunch of Charles Edmund Brock illustrations, which I could not get enough of and so returned to the searchpage and found Molland's Circulating-Library. SO COOL! Jane Austen fans have bought illustrated editions of her novels and uploaded scans of them and oh my gosh they are all so beautiful.

Side note about Henry Tilney (Catherines' love interest in NA), I also came across this old fan page for him from a mostly-broken-links-now site called THE CULT OF DA MAN and um it's great haha, check it out. (reviews of artists representations of him, more delicious HTML, and pixel art (!) of da aforementioned man)

There's also an article on Molland's about Charles and Henry Brock and their Jane Austen works that I found interesting. Charles is better known and did far more JA illustrations, but I do really enjoy Henry's tinted line pieces! (the article also dunks on some bad reproductions of them haha)

C.E. Brock also did really cool title pages and when I found out that fic banners were a thing I knew what I wanted to do! (with the help of the symmetry tool and undo haha, so much respect for traditional art)

So, research in hand/bookmarks folder and banner completed, I decided on a scene from Chapter 10 where our beloveds are standing beside the Thames in the moonlight after walking around London for hours together and talking (CUTE). I wasn't sure what buildings to include in the background, so @gorgeousundertow gave me a few suggestions: Old Southwark Bridge, London Bridge, Southwark Cathedral, and Clink Prison. I realized after a bit of sketching that bridges would be hard to show with the straight-on view I wanted to do, so I decided on the Cathedral, partially because I had also considered drawing a scene that takes place in Salisbury Cathedral in Ch. 7.

OK BUT HOW? I struggled finding reference images for a while until I realized this was LONDON and would be very Google Earth-able. Big ups to Frank Cosgrove, whoever they are, for uploading this haha. This was also where I found out that all the suggestions were from a very small area!

The building in front of the cathedral looked too new, so I went searching for an older image and found the second image. It's a completely different angle but it was enough to get me past the 'oh no idk what do'.

While looking for images of the Thames pre-Google Earth, I also found this website called Dictionary Of Victorian London which has a whole bunch of old images and excerpts from newspapers, etc on a variety of topics. One of the categories, Sex > 'unnatural offences', had this excerpt from The Times (1863), which reads:

Thomas Lane, a coffeehouse keeper, No.9, Love-lane, Eastcheap, city, and James Mortimer, a seaman, were charged with unlawfully meeting each other to commit an unnatural offence. ... The Magistrate committed both prisoners for trial.

Ugh. I hate that so much. Some sexy stuff happens right after the moment I'd chosen, and reading that reminded me that such things would be much more comfortable and safe in darkness (or if ppl just stopped being homophobic, but barring that). I wanted them to feel alone, like the whole world was asleep and it was just them, outside of time.

With that in mind, the iconic Thames Walk Lamp had to go bye bye, and when rendering the background I tried to minimize any light - it's just the suggestion of buildings. I also added tree cover! I tried to imitate how Joan Hassall does trees in some of her artwork, but when she rendered trees like this they were usually farther away/smaller, so my version looks more stylized with how prominent they are.

The ribbon border and book quote presentation is of course more Brock, but by making it black and having the interior image use it as a border instead of a fade-out inside it, I made it a bit of a reference to the very cool foliage edges you see in the very first Hassall image at the top.

I used the procreate brushes from this post on the Procreate Folio forums if anyone wants to try them!

Also fun fact! The font for the quote is called Chanson D'Amour <3 (I initially downloaded it when making the banner before changing the banner font to one called Dark & Black)

Good Omens Fanfic Recs

I decided to write up and sort my fanfic recommendations and thoughts, mostly for my own benefit, as an organized list of my favorites for reference. But also, here it is in case anyone's interested.

Heads up, no post-season 2 fix-it fics on this list if that's what you're looking for. I've got mostly historical canon-compliance and AUs. A few post-season 1 canon-divergent.

Also, I'm a sucker for pining, but also headcanon these guys (gn) as demisexual virgins, so nearly all are ace-friendly except the long AUs.

Canon Compliant - short

In general I favor canon compliance and keeping in character. Part of what got me hooked on Good Omens fanfic was the immense breadth of history available to explore with these characters. Let's list in approximate chronological order!

Little Monkey in a Waistcoat (<1k) - Did you catch that line? Crowley spent much of the Battle for Heaven in monkey form!

A Letter from “Crawly” to Azirapil (<1k) - Fanfic in Cuneiform. Amazing.

see, how the most dangerous thing is to love (6.8k) - 1185 BC. Crawly and Aziraphale meet during the Trojan War as Achilles mourns Patroclus. Super well-researched and thought out with the Iliad! I'll be looking for more from this writer.

Cat's Charm & Serpent's Sorrow (<1k) - 942 BC. They come upon each other in a temple in Egypt.

Day 7: Alexandria (<1k) - Just a little saving of people and scrolls in the fire.

Ex Maria virgine (1.6k) - Gabriel at the annunciation! Pregnancy, how does that work??

that old common arbitrator, time (1.1k) - 1602. An epilogue of sorts for the Trojan War one, Crowley and Aziraphale critique Shakespeare's Troilus and Cressida. Lots of fun references.

the stars are the same as ever (4.4k) - Vignettes about Crowley hanging out with astronomers in the 17th century.

Mean It (2k) - The origin of the Apology Dance. 1650, 1793, and 1941 all featured. Short and sweet, very believable. Just as flirty as I imagined.

Good Old-Fashioned Coffee Shop Date (1k) - 1750. Crowley goes to a coffeehouse to start an argument and guess who's also there!

well-versed in etiquette, extraordinarily nice (3k) - Jane Austen, mastermind of the 1810 Clerkenwell Diamond Robbery, brandy-smuggler, master spy, and wrote books too. Well-researched, with Austen-esque prose, and perfectly fills in the background for how Crowley remembers her.

Crossing Paths (3k) - Edinburgh, 1827. Showing how Crowley and Aziraphale crossed paths there, and dropping us off where the Resurrectionists minisode begins. Delightful.

Temporary Tattoo (9.8k) - Okay, this one's arguable on the canon compliance, it's kinda a crack-fic (and feels way more 19th century than 11th so I'm putting it here in the chronology) but I loved it. Crowley's snake tattoo wanders, and he can feel what it feels. (The sequel is also really sweet, though definitely canon divergent.)

I stretch out the time (and now I know why) (6k) - 1960's ineffable wives and what happened to make Aziraphale say Crowley goes too fast.

Visibilium omnium et invisibilium (5.8k) - 1969. Crowley's planning another heist! Really silly. Excellent.

Orchids and Tea (3k) - A shameless plug for my own fic. Meet the old lady downstairs who Crowley gives his "bad" plants to.

What You've Lost But Never Had (3k) - A sweet outsider POV with Maggie's closeted grandfather.

So You Need To Get Into A.Z. Fell & Co.; Now What? (A Guide For Unfortunate Bookworms) (1.8k) - Handy guide for interpreting the store hours, etc.

All of This is Completely Normal Here (6.8k) - Some pre-armageddon fun with Crowley and Aziraphale being interviewed at a police station. Crowley is a regular and they have bingo cards.

The Disposables (7.5k) - Arguably canon divergent. Surprisingly heartwarming. Eric the Disposable Demon is buds with the Usher.

When You're Through With Life and All Hope is Lost (Friends Will Be Friends) (<1k) - COVID-era ficlet post-Lockdown minisode.

The Last Four Years (11.7k) - Perfectly fills in the gap between the seasons with all the feelings and poor communication that brought us here, from the Ritz to Aziraphale's phone call.

Pointless (1.5k) - An exploration of Crowley as he is at the beginning of season 2, anxious and depressed about the pointlessness of it all.

Been Together Long? (1.2k) - It's so common for fics to depict Crowley as knowingly in love but hiding his feelings for 6000 years. But I don't think he's self-aware enough for that, and I really do believe that was an Oh moment with Nina on the street. This fic is an excellent insight into what he was thinking there.

The Afternoon Lecture (<1k) - A cute little outsider POV fic, set sometime in the Happily Ever After probably.

The Slings and Arrows of Angelic Archery (<1k) - Guess which historical/legendary figure Crowley was! Sadly just a little modern-day conversation about it rather than the actual thing. (I'm writing it though, stay tuned! 👀)

A Narrow Escape to the Country (10.7k) - This one is so fun! Crowley and Aziraphale are guests on a house-hunting TV show. (Established relationship with innuendo, but all sexy times are off-camera.)

My Roommate from Hell (5.7k) - Warlock ends up college roommates with Adam, and yeah, Warlock's upbringing made him kinda weird.

But the greatest of these is love (2.1k) - Lovely/sweet/silly garden fluff for the happily ever after.

Canon Divergent - long

Divergent in that these were written before season 2 came out, so branch off from after season 1.

Demonology and the Tri-Phasic Model of Trauma: An Integrative Approach (99k) - This one is recommended a lot I know, but deservedly so. This was the first GO fanfic I read, as I idly looked to see what had the most kudos. And then I couldn't put it down.

Instructions Not Included (68k) - Plot heavy but excellent. I loved the writing style of this one; it's so evocative with its metaphors, but without being flowery. Sadly left a few unanswered questions since the sequel was abandoned, but it's still well worth reading. Very realistic progression of feelings between Crowley and Aziraphale (intimacy without sexuality).

The Sandford Flower Show (E) (46k) - This was a bit of a painful read with flashbacks to ancient Egypt, but it's very good. Many feels. (Higher sex-drive than I generally prefer for canonverse, so note that E rating.)

Canon Divergent - short

Slow (9.3k) - Adam assumed Crowley and Aziraphale were married and restored the bookshop with a marriage certificate on the wall. Miscommunication and sweetness ensues.

Human AUs - long (modern day)

It took me a while to warm up to the idea of reading AUs, since the immortal natures and powers of Crowley and Aziraphale are so integral to their characters (also I personally don't seek out fanfics for the smut and the highly rec'd ones are nearly always Explicit). But after seeing Slow Show in particular recommended so often, I finally gave it a go. Yes, the human versions of the characters are always different in varying ways, but I've found it really fascinating to see the different ways characters, scenes, and lines get reinterpreted in AUs and have now read way more of them than I expected to.

Slow Show (E) (95k) - I have never in my life read anything (fanfic or otherwise) as emotionally intense as Slow Show. This fic is all lust and angst and I physically felt the agony of it for days while I read. While other fics are also explicit, this is the most mature and "adult" feeling with its themes. Yes this fic is recommended a lot, but its reputation is well earned. However, that said, I wouldn't say it's my favorite.

Old Vines (E) (189k) - Excellent slow burn. This one really captures the aspect of them both being anxious/frustrated under contractual obligations, wishing they could be freer to do their own thing. Truly gratuitous descriptions of all aspects of wine, from growth, production, tasting, and quantity consumed. I learned a lot. Was also actually really inspired by Aziraphale's journey in this.

Or Be Nice (E) (151k) - I wasn't sure I'd like this one at first, but I'm glad I went for it. It's more a character study than a drama. Well done progression from enemies to lovers, and some of the very best conversational dynamics (if a bit of ngk overuse). This one highlights the petty/mischievous sides of Crowley and Aziraphale that are rarely found in fanfics, and the execution is delightful. Loved Anathema in this also.

stalwart sun, wily moon (370k) - (What, a non-explicit long AU??) This fic is amazing. Yes, long, it could use some editing to cut back a tad tbh, but still, amazing. Heist AU with an intriguing plot and life or death stakes. Characters and side characters all really well done, incorporates everything from the botched baby swap to the Great Plan and more. Amazing. Really. Only fic I've bought a physical printing of.

Talk about the weather (81k) - (Technically not explicit but yeah no they have sex.) Weatherman/stormchaser AU. They have an Arrangement. The premise of this one was weird for me because I headcanon Crowley as disliking the rain, but it's good. Not the typical characterizations you see in fics, which was really refreshing. Finally! Someone who remembers Aziraphale is kind of a bastard who doesn't say what he means, and someone who lets Crowley be happy and confident instead of a nervous wreck!

on the same page (E) (117k) - They're both writers. A very good execution of your classic fake marriage. Some lush metaphorical prose. Excellent characterizations on our pair, and the setup preceded by 6 years of intense yearning was just perfect. I do wish the side characters had gotten more fleshed out.

Married at First Sight (146k) - This premise is so silly (though then again the TV show does really exist), but it's actually really well done. The feels nearly made me cry.

And so beguile thy sorrow (48k) - Aziraphale is a librarian and Crowley is "that patron." The premise may not sound very unique, but it's excellent. Really clever. Nice slow burn. This fic remembers they are not well adjusted, and leaves a lot unsaid, which I kinda like. Highly recommended, particularly if you like fics that mirror season 1 story beats.

Find the Light (E) (97k) - Headmaster/Rock star AU. This one has a dynamic that I have been dying to see: that they know they are loved by the other, but can't speak or act on it for Reasons, while at the same time being unable to stay away from each other. Pining without uncertainty or loneliness. Love it. Really, they're too sweet and communicative to truly be in character, but it's a beautiful fic. (Written post s2 so we get Muriel and Nina, and Metatron is the villain instead of Gabriel.)

Human AUs - long (historical)

On Espionage and Prophecy (E) (133k) - Take the first season 1941 flashback and make it a novel-length human AU. Aziraphale's a bookseller and Crowley's a spy working with him to double-cross the double-crossing Nazis. I will say the plot contrivance sometimes requires a bit of suspension of disbelief, but that's okay, it's fun and has some great pining.

Half Agony, Half Hope (E) (31k) - Regency era AU, but it's not all Jane Austen fantasy-land. We've got some real history lessons here, highlighting the political struggles of the time. This one's on the short side, but doesn't really feel like it; time passes behind the scenes, so the relationship doesn't feel rushed. Overall it's excellent and really deserves more love.

Human AUs - short

On the Ethics of Asking Your Professor on a Date (7.4k) - I kinda wish this one was a bit better with the showing vs. telling in places, but I still found it really charming.

Postcards From Paris (12k) - Crowley starts receiving postcards from an A.Z.F. meant for the previous tenant, and after awhile gets a chance to write back. Very sweet.

Oh, Lord, Heal This Love (7.3k) - "Looking for someone to take to couples therapy and see how long it takes the therapist to notice we don't know each other." Very funny and also really sweet.

Miscellaneous AUs - short

air conditioned, love unconditional (8.8k) - AU where Aziraphale is a ceiling fan and Crowley is an air conditioning unit. Look, it's adorable, okay? (though the ending is kinda silly)

Speaking in Code (8.9k) - Cute queer Outsider POV. Aziraphale and Crowley become college professors in their retirement. Arguably canon compliant, but I'm calling it an AU since I don't really see it happening. A+ for the accurate gender treatment on Aziraphale.

Lit (12.7k) - Technically canon-divergent from the book? Crowley takes a university course on literature and surprise! The book they’re discussing is Good Omens. Crack treated seriously. It works really well actually!

Like a spiral sea unending (1.1k) - Crowley is a black hole, Aziraphale is a giant star. They're drawn to each other like gravity (pun intended).

3. ITMF: I'm very, very picky about modern aus but figured I'd give it a try. I want a modern au where they're already adults, it's angsty, and they're in character. My fave is when the angst kind of mirrors canonverse (ie WWX being "disowned," framed for something or disappearing, miscommunication, whatever so long as it isn't kind of just random melodrama) but I'll also just accept if the angst is in a breaking up -> getting back together/exes to lovers arc. Currently reading: Harry Potter and the Cursed child - the Journey don’t come after me, I happen to enjoy the cursed child but not in script format because it’s just so much better live, and Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen. I’m also halfway through Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile which I should finish before I forget about it.

Favourite colour: Mint. It just is, and I really want Christine’s rooftop cape even though I would have no purpose for it

Last Song: The candy man (original Broadway cast recording), it makes me feel better when I’m sad. Technically the last song I listened to would be whatever was playing on the ice before the session finished but I don’t know what it was and frankly, it’s just background music and I don’t actually really listen to it because I’m focusing on not falling in a stupid way.

Last movie: (do proshots count?) if so then The Pirate Queen which I haven’t finished yet because I’m watching it with my friend over the course of many ten minute breaks and the only one hour break we have a week as part of the long list of musicals we’re watching together if not, Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3 because it’s in theatres and I haven’t seen the second spider-verse movie yet

Yes, there are entire categories of fics that summarise canon! Perhaps they're less common in some fandoms than in others (I mostly read Jane Austen fanfiction; I used to read a lot of Doctor Who and Dragon Age fic)?

Consider:

Fics that retell the canon story from the point of view of another character (Pride and Prejudice from Darcy's point of view; or "outsider pov" stories which tell the story from the pov of a minor character).

"Missing scene" fics (in the Austen fandom these are historically called "interstitials"), which give a more detailed description of a scene that happens in the background of the narrative and is only described very glancingly (like, in his letter Frank says that he and Jane argued after the Box Hill picnic; or, Darcy tells Elizabeth that Lady Catherine had told him that Elizabeth hadn't promised not to marry him—so a lot of people write fleshed-out versions of those scenes).

Some fics work like novelisations, in that they take an episode of a TV show (for example) and write it out in prose. This can be fun to read because people can have very different takes on what characters are thinking and what they're motivated by, even though their dialogue and actions are the same.

In the Dragon Age fandom there are a lot of fics that tell the canon story (I guess, one of the canon stories, given that it's an RPG so you can make various choices) from beginning to end, because people want to describe their player character's motivations and things.

I'm not sure if this counts as what you mean when you say "summarise canon," but it's what I would consider a "canon" fic versus an "AU" one. (Something that isn't described as happening in canon, but could have, I suppose I'd call "canon-compliant." Prequels and sequels usually fall into this category.)

Is it just me or has a lot of fandom forgotten what "AU" means? It's short for Alternate Universe. I keep seeing people talking about, like, "fake dating AU" or "only one bed AU." Unless your characters exist in a world where a) beds don't exist or b) beds exist in such abundance there could not POSSIBLY be only one of them, that's not an AU. It's just a regular degular story.
