You lived a quiet life. Idyllic, some would consider it. Your father's kingdom was small but peaceful, its people mostly happy, and you spent your days in the castle idling by, reading, visiting the townsfolk...

What a dream. Not yours, however. No, you wished you hadn't been born royalty. And you knew it was a naive wish, for you had anything you could ask for, except, of course, the only thing you truly wanted; the right to marry whoever you liked.

From a young age, your father had been preparing you for your future: You would marry the neighboring kingdom's heir to the throne.

As you grew up, you warmed up to the idea, and you were ready to face your destined future. That is, until they hired a new gardener to keep the Royal Gardens.

Jeremiah was a ray of sunshine. Always had a smile for you, always greeted you when you went for walks, and every weekend, he would gather the leftover flowers he had to cut, and arrange them into a bouquet for you. "They'll keep you company in your room, Your Highness," he said with a smile.

Now you found yourself sitting by the table where the flowers stood, sighing dreamily as you plucked the petals from a daisy like a teenager with a crush. "He loves me, he loves me not..."

It had been four months since he was hired. Sometimes you wondered if he did it on purpose, if he was trying to seduce you for nefarious means, but you quickly forgot about such a thing as soon as he waved his hand in greeting, the sun illuminating his soft curls and even more so his crinkled eyes, clothes covered in dirt and grass stains, sweat glistening in his skin and... What were you thinking about again?

Once, you spent the whole day leaning on your window, looking out to the gardens, watching him work. When he looked in your direction, you quickly ducked and hid, covering your face in embarrassment. Just what were you doing? What was happening to you?

You didn't quite realize the extent of your fixation until one of your servants walked in on you smooshing your face into the gifted bouquet and wailing something about 'I wish I was a flower so he'd take care of me toooooo...'

Your servant kept your secret, of course, but now they giggled to themselves whenever you looked at Jeremiah.

Unbeknownst to you, Jeremiah was just as affected.

When they offered him a job in the palace, he accepted it for the money and the accommodations. And his love of gardening, of course. After all, the Royal Gardens were home to some exotic plants that couldn't be seen in other places.

He knew of the Royal Family, although never seen any of them, and was aware that you were around his age, and that was pretty much it.

So, the first day you went for your usual stroll through the garden while he was working, several things happened.

One, he accidentally cut a branch he wasn't supposed to, because his eyes were on you. Two, he fell from the ladder he was perched on due to cutting that same branch. Three, despite not being able to tell if his quick-beating heart was due to the fall or something else entirely, he realized with certainty that he had a blooming crush on you.

From that point forward, he did the most to interact with you. And to his surprise, you were always so nice to him. Wasn't royalty supposed to be a bit stuck up and mean? This was both good news and bad news.

Good news because he was so happy to be able to talk to you every now and then, and you always smiled at him whenever he called out to say hi, and you always thanked him so sweetly when he brought you flowers...

Bad news because he wasn't supposed to be pining after you! After someone he couldn't have! Out of every servant, every person back in town, every other worker in the palace, he had to like you?? How cruel fate can be.

Still, that didn't stop or deter him.

He always made sure to be as presentable as possible, even after hours of work, in case you came around. And if you came around, he found himself flexing his muscles the tiniest bit, standing straight to look nicer.

Every flower he picked for the bouquet was actually meticulously selected, and if you knew what the flowers he kept giving you meant, you might've realized sooner that your feelings were reciprocated.

On long days, when he hadn't seen you at all, he kept glancing up towards your window, hoping to catch a glimpse of you, wondering what you were doing. It'd be then when his imagination got the best of him, and he'd be blushing while staring straight at the ground because he thought about you giving him a massage after a tiring day.

Oh, if only you both knew...
