warnings: cussing, threats of violence (no actual fighting), donut doc and zone being friends, zone being a little shit, wash bringing up his Freelancer status to use against Zone
notes: gonna try this like i actually write and post things here. please correct me if i got specific details wrong
summary: agent arizona b joins the reds and blues in the crash site on chorus.
Arizona scaled the sheer cliff with his forearm blades, invisible, and making sure he was out of sight as he pushed himself off the cliff and landed semi-quietly. He looked around; not a red, blue, agent, mercenary, Fed, or rebel in sight. Great, a chance to find and talk to Wash privately.
Uncloaking, he barely even stepped into the sunlight when he heard “Intruder!”, then jumped back as someone shot at him.
Sighing heavily, he made sure his voice filter was on before calling out, “Don’t shoot! Friendly!”
There was silence, then: “How friendly?”
“Friendly enough to not kick your ass!” He sighed, facepalming. “Donut! You over there?”
“Yeah!” Donut’s voice piped up.
Arizona looked away from the direction of the voice, then looked back and Donut was in front of him. “Oh! The Meta’s murder buddy! Hey man! Variagrade, right?”
Arizona scrambled away from the pink soldier. He saw four more soldiers come into view: a red one pointing a shotgun at him, an orange one poking his head around the corner, a maroon one also poking his head around the corner, and a purple one behind the red one. ‘Great,’ Arizona thought. ‘Not even five minutes in and I’ve been cornered.’
“You!” The red one yelled.
“Me,” Arizona responded tiredly.
“You’re that terror that was with the Meta! Why’re you here? Revenge?!”
“Far from it,” Arizona hissed. “I’m here to talk to Washington.”
“Oh, get lost!” The orange one snapped. “You’re only here to kill us!”
Arizona sighed, walking closer to the Red soldiers, but just out of the shotgun’s range. This caused the orange one to yelp and duck behind the corner, but the maroon one yanked him back out.
“Let me talk to Wash,” he hissed.
“He really wasn’t much trouble when he visited me and Donut in Valhalla,” the purple one -Doc- piped up. “He came with us on the ship. He’s friendly.”
“WHAT?!” The maroon one yelled, voice cracking. His head whipped around to look at Doc, then back at Arizona.
Arizona sat down and huffed, crossing his arms and looking up at the confused soldiers.
“Donut, stay here and guard it! We’ll discuss whether it can stay here or not!”
“Don’t worry, Sarge! I’ll make sure he stays pinned in this corner!” Donut shouted.
Arizona snickered, causing even more confusion for everyone, except Doc and Donut.
The Reds and Doc walked away, leaving Donut and Arizona. Donut plopped himself down next to Arizona.
“Hi!” Donut said.
“Hey,” Arizona greeted. Donut had been friendly when Arizona had shown up in Valhalla, despite him trying to kill Donut before. While he had stayed with Donut and Doc in Valhalla, he found out that Donut could also see ghosts.
“So!” Donut began. “How’ve you been? How did the scouting go?”
“I-,” Arizona sighed. “I’ve been doing fine. I miss my brother, and I miss my friends; the ghosts are good company, but you know how they can be. The scouting mission was… fine as well, but I need to discuss things with Wash before anything.”
Donut nodded. “Yeah, the ghosts can be difficult, but they’re relatively nice- for me anyway. You can see your brother though, right?”
Arizona nodded, holding his helmeted head in his hands, sighing deeply. Donut put a hand on his back reassuringly.
“Okay, Zone,” Doc said, reappearing from around the corner. “You can stay, but you’re on the Red Team and under watch.”
“Fine. Who’s watchin’ me?”
“Simmons.”
Arizona sighed, following Donut and Doc as they got up, following them to see Sarge and the other Reds.
“Attention, tiny terror!” Sarge said. “You’re bein’ put under watch! Your watcher is Simmons, so no funny business, like murdering your new teammates!”
Arizona rolled his eyes, especially because he was taller than Sarge. “Alright, alright, whatever. Can I go talk to Wash now?”
“Who wants to- YOU.”
“Shit.” Arizona looked at Wash with boredom as he whipped his gun out and pointed it at him.
“Why are you here?”
“I’ve been here, shitlips,” Arizona said. “I scouted the area; I came here to talk to you, but clearly, you don’t want to talk to me.”
Wash was silent; there was a substantial amount of tension in the air.
“You. Blue base. Now.” Wash snarled.
“Hmm, I don't know,” Arizona said, putting a finger to their helmet, feigning thought. “My team leader will have to say if I can go first. Sarge?”
“Now is not the time to be a little shit-”
“The Variagrade here is under watch! He’s to stay here in Red base for now!” Sarge said.
Arizona stood up straight, crossing his arms.
Washington sighed. “Fine, Arizona,” he said, causing Arizona to bristle. “Come over when you feel like it.” Wash turned around, but before he left, he said: “Maybe turn your filter off and show them what’s under the helmet. Then you’ll see why I was worried about you with the Meta and everything.”
The tension was back, but all eyes were on Arizona. He could feel the Red’s eyes burning into him.
“Arizona?” Simmons finally said. “You’re a Freelancer?”
“Was,” Arizona quickly corrected. “I was a Freelancer. You can guess what happened in the end.”
“I mean it makes sense why you were with the Meta, you were friends-”
“Brothers,” Arizona corrected. “We were brothers; not biological, though. Me and Maine were a tough duo to beat, as you all saw, but I was a hindrance to Sigma, the A.I. that possessed Maine and turned him into… that. I was a hindrance because of my empathy; I couldn’t kill Freelancer agents, especially ones I was close to, like the twins, or Wash. I was often sent to track down other Freelancers, but I would never catch up to them; I would lie.
“Don’t get me wrong, I still killed, and I’ll continue to, but I can’t kill my friends. I lack a lot of empathy, but not as much that’s needed for that. I tried killing Wyoming, but I couldn’t do it. Now I’m stuck like this.”
“What did Wash mean when he was leavin’? You go somethin’ to hide?” Sarge interrogated, attempting to intimidate Arizona by moving closer to him.
“Hmm, how do I phrase this…” Arizona said, tapping his head. “Have any of you met a very homicidal teenager?”
He was met with multiple answers.
“My sister.”
“Way too many.”
“I was one!”
“A few.”
“I was friends with all of them!”
This left Arizona with a bit of concern, but he continued. “First, I’ll turn off my filter.” He heard a light click inside his helmet. “How do I sound?”
“Like a- oh no. I think I get your question now.”
With a final sigh, Agent Arizona B removed his EVA helmet, revealing his face.
“...Well?” He said, risking a glance up at his new teammates.
The tension was real, and Arizona hated it. Couldn’t someone just say something?
“You’re a child,” Doc finally said. “A kid.”
“I’m no fucking child,” Arizona snapped, before reeling himself back in. “I’ve seen and done shit y’all never have, I’m not a child- I haven’t been for years.”
“You’re too young to even enlist!” Sarge shouted. “I appreciate the will to fight, but how did you even get into the Freelancer gang anyway?”
“Long story, too long. It’s whatever anyway. I don’t care to tell my story anymore; I’d rather just forget it.” Arizona looked back down, then put his helmet back on. “I’m goin’ to go talk to Wash. I’ll be back eventually.”
“Ari-” Donut started.
“It’s either Arizona or Zone,” Arizona snapped. “‘Ari’ was the Arizona before me. They’re dead.”
