I feel like if I was presented with the opportunity to be independent from cell phones and all their dopamine inducing applications I would feel truely free, relaxed like I was as a child but only and only if I absolutely knew I didnt need it, not for work calls, scheduling, alarms, music, tracking or any of its other numerous conveniences. What freedom, it was easy as a child to live without it because my problems werent so big and numerous. I could find one way or another to entertain myself. But at this age it would be more than boredom I would have to face as it fills the absence of the consistent and interesting input from the internet. This technology is the one and only means of escape from an onslaught of thoughts and feelings that I by no means was instructed or given the tools to handle. And if this addicting coping mechanism was stripped from me now it could trigger a massive breakdown, I would have to confront the reality of this dystopic era with no buffer and no tools to do so in a healthy way. I was not taught, WE were never taught how to deal with reality or our existences in it, we were only taught to work, earn money, and without the knowledge necessary to handle the exhaustion or obstacles we turned to entertainment in order to ignore the thoughts and feelings that were thrust upon is but neverinstructed to process. And we make jokes about our dependency on them, taking challenges such as "going a day/week/months, without a cell phone" we could definitely do it. Would be easy for some and groundbreaking for others. But given the oppprtunity to give up our technologies seems only worth it if we're free from the consequence that society has created. Free from angry calls from workplaces, free from urgent calls from our doctors, banks and insurance. free from angry or sad texts from friends and family who are only trying to contact you the fastest way possible, and free from it by having every means necessary to have reminders, alarms, schedules, and information sorted out and available WITHOUT cell phones. We know our parents lived without them, but their employers did too. It doesnt work nowadays if employers have all the modern technology and all the workers choose not to simply to improve their lifestyle, which companies care nothing about. We are not just dependent on this technology, the working society has decided to depend on it which forces us into it to survive. Absolute freedom from cell phones for us also means absolute freedom from our employers and businesses. But companies dont want to give up the convenience of contacting workers asap. And if thats the case why not use these chains for our own entertainment. Back to square one? Its a horrible cycle. We want to be free of cell phones, but doing so makes it difficult to exist in society AND we have to face a bleak reality without knowing how. A terrifying freedom.

Ive always liked Alex we always seemed to grow up together from NYC to Texas to Oklahoma he always seemed to be around
And he was usually pretty nice.
Even if he got on my nerve he always seemed to get me to like him, he's quite easy to talk to with a nice personality
So, he wanted pets and as long as he's not abusive to them then I told him he could. He, too was privileged to be asked what he wanted.
So in his next room he has fish, bunny, hamster, bathroom and a real bed and fluffy pillows.
He said "just a prison room and all the animals that can fit" and he asked for a pony. I was like dude no that's too much. Maybe a stuffed one.
In Jr high his dad was pretty abusive so he stayed at my goose often. I had bunk beds but he would fall asleep in the floor then climb up into his own bed. Or say "dad I'm cold" and shiver in the floor... And not get up. I learned to get up off the opposite end of the bed and turn on the light and tell him to open his eyes and shake his foot otherwise he would grab mu leg and try to fight me while he was asleep. Then i would pull him a blanket down and cover him he would ask me "who are you?"
Id tell him "im your friend from school"
Sometimes he would tell me he didnt go to school or say "school I miss that place" and/or ask if i kidnapped him
I learned to tell him i did kidnap him otherwise he would sleep walk all over and I would find him in the pagan's yard asleep or some other random place in the morning.
Cause in his mind he thought "if I'm not kidnapped I'm free to leave"
And he was but not while sleeping.
And so if i had to tell him he was kidnapped he would ask if he could eat. I learned to tell him, "in the morning" otherwise I would make food he wouldn't eat or he would sleep cook and I would hear him choking and coughing.
Usually we played 20 questions. Sometimes I pretended to be asleep and he would climb in my bed like a little kid "I said who are you?!?!?"
Eventually i learned to say "Sabrina, you're safe for tonight, all the doors and windows are closed and locked, you're free to sleep in the house right where you are" then he would snore deeply until morning.
Sometimes he just showed up at my door, looking like some kind of wreck. "I just need a place to sleep. I don't eat"
But I would make him food and he would eat like he hadn't in days.
Just one of them ruffian kids that wouldn't make you feel sorry for him, you just did.
Whenever I looked at him in Oklahoma somehow he just made me cry. I didn't even remember him and we rarely talked he lived at this party house I sometimes went to down the street from my grammas.
He went down to Lawton a lot. That's where a lot of us got our weed. They all said that was where he was from.
Lawton was a distribution center for Mexican red hair from what I heard. That was all I smoked. Sometimes we had yellow hair...
One time me and Steph drove him to OKC to catch a bus because the fare was cheaper and he didn't have a car. He went to Lawton to "check on stuff"
He wasn't always rich or a jerk.
He is just who he is
So he has a phone now so his live feed will be turned off
As it was explained they only have live feeds for their loved ones because they don't have a phone with internet. He has a Galaxy 9 Note. So its a lot bigger than the others and what he had before. He had requested a large phone and computer as well. And a desk and its in his other room
So some people like Jesse have the ability to tunnel and make new rooms and he has two concrete rooms and 2 bathroom areas. And the one in the new room has a privacy curtain as requested. So he can shit in the nude and not all the guys be looking.
Jesse's hands do not hurt, too much. And he's convinced they're love bites from his demon wife he found on the beach. So he's happier. Yes he did request such a woman. He's quieter as well.
Which I like.
The winds came and destroyed Nathaniel's outdoor cameras with extreme fury at the house. So that was interesting.
My air conditioner was on 60°F and I turned it up to 69° and it was better but it worked attentively better when I turned it up two degrees to 71° I tried various degrees up to 75° but 71° works best.
I also tried "dry mode" which removes humidity from the air which worked well until it began to rain then,it was miserable again.
So meddle with your air conditioner numbers until you feel the best coolest air flow.
And it's good to try it at night ... To find the absolute best.. If it works well when it's cool it will be working as best as possible when it's 105° real feel and it's less frustrating. You just know its the best you got even if it's not good enough
Right now with the rain and humidity it makes it more complicated so it's better right at dusk
Stay hydrated and peaceful.
I know I'm being kind to prisoners whom don't rightly deserve kindness but their punishments are harsh. And what kind of person am I if I'm just mean to everyone?
Well.. If you ask me... Well..
There's this philosophy that being great to people invokes guilt. The feeling they have wronged. Most especially while being punished. They realize they should have treated better when they had their freedom.
It only works while they're incarcerated. Once they obtain their freedom they're like a flesh eating bacteria and go back to their bullshit
So we are very aware of this. So while they are not mistreated and their accomodations are as they wished and some get better over time as it is earned.
They will stay there. I did make contingency for work release but I am told NHRA has not allowed them to be on The schedule which I do appreciate
Nd it is for the safety
Matt Hagan got 2 ten pound bowling balls.
The reason we have low pounds is because our guards -- heavy weights thrown at guards can be very damaging. So a guard can take a 10 pound bowling ball to the gut but not a 30 or 50.
Amd they're bowling balls at 10 or 15 pounds because they're harder to handle these don't have holes. So if they're practising throwing them then they get taken away.
So then when they have weights and they go outside they have to put them on the bed or opposite side of the door along the wall, be handcuffed through the food slot and then they have to stand in the middle of the room and do a count down breathing and stretching session and then they approach the door then they can be foot shackled and the prisoner connects it themself
So you have wrist handcuffs and feet then a chain from both so they can't swing their arms and hit others.
Once connected it needs a key to unlock but it shows trust and cooperation and it's a good exercise
They keep their exercise equipment if they connect their cuffs correct. Its almost impossible not to. And they get shown how.
The guard can do it but it's an attempt to allow independence and recognition of choices and self authority and to say "you got yourself in this situation, take responsibility"
The guard didn't do bad things to have to be there. The prisioner did. The last straw for them to be properly arrested was what they did.
We allowed them 12 years. And they all made "bets" aka promises and so on and so forth. And they failed at being civilized human beings..
Jesse James wrote with shit on the wall and then ate shit the first night.
That is an obvious failure.
Its what he always does tho. But he has to live in it and clean it because he chose to do that and no one is going in his cell
That's his room. There is times that guards will but normally it's not necessary and it won't happen.
Alex will to have help with his animals but that's a little different it's for the animals welfare. Its once per week.
Like for their trash they have to request trash receptacle. They can pick the size or have a large and small and they have to request trash bags. Then they fill and Tie It and show the guard or cameras and then they have to place it 2 foot from the door and then stand on their bed or at the opposite wall and spread 'em arrested style. Arms and legs spread, hands against the wall back to the door. For guard safety. Then the guard gets it and locks the door and let's them know by saying the equivalent of "okay" in the language of the day. If the prisoner doesn't respond, the guard knocks on the door.
Its their room. Their house. Someone is at the door.
Then they say thank you in the language of the day when they respond and remove from their position.
Otherwise they have to be shackled. So this is simpler and easier and allows trust and cooperation and human decency and also the reminder they're in prison.
But most trash is food and so most just put it all back on their tray when the guard comes to collect.
So there's an old fashioned slot so if they tray falls to the hall. There's a basket there that should catch the tray and trash.
If they throw the tray out to make a mess in the hall, the tray of their food is covered with a light non tight layer of saran wrap then shoved through the slot to make it fly and make a mess.
The loose layer of saran is to protect the food... But at the same time it's loose and the point is made. As Well as a mess.
And then betrer behavior occurs.
So it's obvious who is in control but sometimes they wanna try their hand. But I'm a very angry person so my prison personnel puts up with nothing.
They don't question or wonder. What is done to them, they do in return.
They have their rules of humanity but when prisoners go on the wind, the guards blow back.
So if they get hit, 3 guards hit the prisoner. Always. And then rights get taken away. And all kinds of shit happens.
So we try to prevent violence against each other because if a prison riot occurs, my guards will be out of jobs.
So everyone has their own rooms and their wishes and they can ask and get nearly anything
Matt for example got 10 pound weights because he had a large body mass of muscle. And so that is what he worked for and earned. So he gets a 10 pound. And we go up to 15 but Idk i guess he didn't ask for top weights.
But the point is also he can do weights all day long as opposed to just half a day. And he can max the muscles if done properly.
But someone with smaller muscle mass will get a lighter weight
Like I said to protect the guard but also to protect the user of the weightsm too heavy can cause damage.
Going to a smooth bowling ball is cumbersome as opposed to weights with handles which of course is why he didn't get the 15 lb. He needs 2 weeks or so on the lighter ball in case he dropps it on his head or something like that and there is great over the head exercise. So I'm not being dumb.. It could happen.
So we treat them like we would kids
Like with Alex... Some of them never have been. And so they need that.
I know if i was always abused and treated like shit and had one year to live as they do with COVID, id like to be treated humane. I'd like to be treated like i had a mom and dad out there that love me.
I'm an orphan and i have been abused and I'm a good person. But I have been to jail. Arrested for real as an adult. So.
I been there. Just for a little bit. It was for weed and telling a cop he sucked. Some felonies. I went to rehab with Alex and it's all off my record now.
So it wasn't a super bad thing.
But if it had been....
I care about me, and i put myself in some places i could be in. And I try to make them better.
Me? I don't like being touched so having the last part of the cuff system up to me to put on -- it says like 'you know, i dont really want to touch you either.'
Like its a little bit of space around me just being able to do one little clip. A little bit of extra room in a super scary situation, being a girl, alone. Anything could happen... But.. I clip it right I have some argument space like "you can't rape me. I'm a model prisioner. I always clip my cuffs right! I'll tell they will believe me! You'll lose your job!"
So it's a privilege. As well as the acceptance of responsibility. I'm not the guard. But i got me here and im gonna be kept here but I'm safe.

Student Digital Literacy and Technology Security
Technology Security and Student Digital Literacy are both relatable topics and if a person is not educated on these subjects it can lead to a technological disaster for an individual.    When someone is illiterate that means they cannot read or write, when someone is not Digitally literate this means they do not have the knowledge and skills to access, evaluate, manipulate, utilize, design and develop information as well as learn from the digital environment. People that are digitally literate tend to be educated or financially wealthy and anyone that lacks this skill are children, elderly, less educated, unemployed, or disabled. The most important group that should be a priority to learn to be digitally literate are children. Schools need to adopt a digital literacy curriculum beginning in the elementary grades to ensure that students develop the necessary skills in a stepwise, systematic way. Back in my day starting at the kindergarten level when we would have “computer lab day”, we would play learning games that required you to put on your head phones and you would operate the mouse to play the games. But as we got older we never learned about the dangers of getting into free games online or websites, I had to learn this on my own when I got to high school and took my first dual credit course. Here is where we get into Technology Security. Last year there was a video called the Momo Challenge that would pop during Youtube videos and while playing games on programs like “Peppa Pig” or communicating on an app called “WhatsApp.” When you see this video it shows a disturbing face of a devilish bird-lady that would give commands to hurt themselves or someone else, and if they did not comply the momo would kill your family. Even teenagers are at risk of such danger. You may have heard of a free online game called Fortnite. This game can be played on any IOT device (Internet of Things) such as Xbox, PS4, cell phones, computers etc. Fortnite is a game of battling people from across the world that requires you to communicate by a headset with people you dont know and you work as a team to kill people to get points. Since it is free you can view pop-ups that show you how to buy actual weapons. Not to mention that you are playing with people you didnt know existed, this is how teenagers get lured to pedophiles  If a child was digitally literate and aware of technology security at a younger age, they would know not to tamper with free apps and games because this is where you see the most ads or pop-ups.

How Tiger's wife caught him cheating
For Tiger Woods, 2009 was both the height of his career and the year it all went off the rails. He played in 19 tournaments, finishing in the top 10 in 16 of them, winning seven. But he also was addicted to painkillers, sleeping pills and sex. He was living recklessly, hooking up with porn stars and keeping a regular girlfriend, Rachel Uchitel, secret from his wife, Elin. As recounted in the recent best-selling biography Tiger Woods it all fell apart that Thanksgiving, when the National Enquirer revealed Tigers cheating. The emotional fallout, coupled with escalating back pain, would keep Woods in the wilderness for a decade before his spectacular win at the 2019 Masters. THE QUOTE THAT STARTED IT ALL When it became apparent that a platoon of high-priced lawyers were not going to be able to derail the story, Woods and his team started circling the wagons. It fell to Tiger to convince his wife. He told her the tabloid story was a lie, that there was no affair between him and Rachel Uchitel. But on Monday, November 23, in advance of publication, the Uchitel expos began circulating on the internet. It contained a quote attributed to her that read like a dagger directed at Elin: Its Tiger Woods. I dont care about his wife! Were in love. Blindsided, Elin didnt know what to believe. It was the week of Thanksgiving, and their second child, Charlie, had just learned to walk and was starting to say his first words. For Elin, these were monumental milestones of joy. But the suspicions in her mind were making it impossible to focus on anything else. In need of someone to confide in, she called the one person she trusted above all her identical twin, Josefin. They had been best friends since childhood. Elin knew Josefin would know what to do. After obtaining a Master of Laws from the London School of Economics and Political Science, Josefin received her law degree in Sweden and joined the American-based firm McGuireWoods LLP. When Elin called her, Josefin was working out of the firms London office, where she specialised in mergers and acquisitions. She immediately came to her sisters aid, providing emotional support and advice.

media_cameraTiger Woods with then wife Elin Nordegren. AFP PHOTO / Files / Robyn Beck WOODS ARRANGES PHONE CALL With the situation worsening, Woods took the extraordinary step of arranging a phone call between Elin and Uchitel, who corroborated Tigers account that there had been no sexual relationship between them. Unconvinced, Elin wanted to see Tigers phone. Afraid that she would find out about the other women in his life, Tiger frantically tried to cover his tracks. He left an urgent voicemail with Jaimee Grubbs: Can you please take your name off your phone? My wife went through my phone and may be calling you. So if you can, please take your name off [and] just have it as a number on the voicemail. Youve got to do this for me. Huge. Quickly. All right. Bye. The following day, the Enquirer landed on supermarket racks in the Orlando area. It was the day before Thanksgiving, and the World Exclusive headline Tiger Woods Cheating Scandal splashed across the cover intensified the already dire atmosphere in the Woods home. The tension was amplified by the fact that Tigers mother, Kultida, was visiting for the holiday. Nothing triggered anxiety in Woods like the fear of disappointing his mother, and nothing had ever disappointed Kultida more than family betrayal first when her parents abandoned her, and then when her husband was repeatedly unfaithful. It was overwhelming to contemplate how she would react to the realisation that her son had far eclipsed his father in the infidelity department. The holiday provided a false appearance of reprieve. The Enquirer story got very little play elsewhere. But Tigers cell phone was an explosive electronic record of his illicit affairs. His device had also become another addiction. On Thanksgiving Day, Woods couldnt resist texting multiple women, including Grubbs. In a short exchange, he wished Grubbs a happy Thanksgiving, and she replied, u too love. At the same time, Elin remained fixated on Tigers phone. After he fell into an Ambien-induced sleep on Thanksgiving night, she searched his text history. She found one from him that said: You are the only one Ive ever loved. He had not sent that text to her. Unsure of the recipients identity, Elin sent a text to the person from Tigers phone. It read, I miss you. When are we seeing each other again? Before long, a reply came back. While her husband slept, Elin called the mysterious number, and Uchitel picked up. Immediately recognising her voice, Elin lost it. I knew it, Elin shouted. I knew it! Oh, f***, Uchitel said.

media_cameraCover of US Weekly on December 4, 2009. TIGER FEARED HIS MOTHER MORE THAN WIFE Moments later, Elins shouting roused Woods from his slumber. Stumbling half-dazed out of bed, he took his phone and retreated to the bathroom. She knows, he texted Uchitel. But in truth, Woods didnt fear the woman standing on the other side of the bathroom door. Hed been cheating on her for years with dozens of women, feeding an insatiable appetite for sex that had spiralled into an out-of-control addiction. No the only woman he had ever truly feared was the one sleeping in a guest room in another part of the mansion: his mother, who was visiting for the holiday. Now a widow for more than three years, Kultida Woods had endured what was at times a humiliating marriage that included verbal abuse, neglect, and adultery. Tiger worshipped his father, but he hated how hed broken his mothers heart. For Tigers sake, Kultida never divorced Earl, choosing instead to preserve the family name and dedicate her life to raising her only child to be a champion. Reputation and Tiger: nothing mattered more than those two things to Kultida. When Tiger was young, his mother had laid down the law: You will never, ever ruin my reputation as a parent, she told him, because I will beat you. When he was a boy, the fear of her hand had helped keep Tiger in line. Now that he was a man, there was nothing more terrifying than the prospect of his mother learning that he had followed in his fathers footsteps. Looking her in the eye would be brutal. Wearing nothing but shorts and a T-shirt, Woods emerged from the house into the forty-degree air. Elin reportedly gave chase with a golf club in hand. In an attempt to get away, Tiger hustled into his Cadillac Escalade and sped out of the driveway, immediately crossing over a concrete kerb and onto a grass median. Swerving hard to his left, he crossed Deacon Circle, jumped a kerb, grazed a row of hedges, swerved back across the road, and collided with a fire hydrant before ploughing into a tree in his next-door neighbours yard. Swinging the club, Elin shattered the rear drivers side and rear passengers side windows.

media_cameraA police image shows the damage to Tigers car. AFP PHOTO/FLORIDA HIGHWAY Kimberly Harris woke to the knocking sound of a sputtering engine. Looking out the window, she saw a black SUV at the bottom of her driveway. The front end was crumpled against a tree, and the lone remaining headlight was shining at the house. Worried, she woke her 27-year-old brother, Jarius Adams. I dont know whos outside, she told him, but I think you need to go out there and find out whats happening. Adams walked cautiously out the front door, trying to process what he was seeing. Woods was lying flat on his back on the pavement. He was shoeless, unconscious, and bleeding from the mouth. There was broken glass on the driveway and a bent golf club beside the vehicle. Sniffling, Elin hovered over her husband. Tiger, she whispered, gently shaking his shoulders. Tiger, are you okay? Crouching down, Adams observed that Tiger was asleep, snoring. His lip was cut. His teeth were bloodstained. Please help me, Elin said. I dont have a phone with me. Will you call someone? Adams ran back inside and yelled to his sister to get blankets and pillows. Tiger is down, he told her. Then he ran back outside and called 911. Suddenly, Kultida Woods emerged from Tigers house and ran toward the scene. What happened? she yelled. Were trying to figure that out, Adams told her. Im on the phone with the police right now. Tears in her eyes, Kultida turned to Elin. Soon they heard a siren and saw blue lights approaching. Humans are Weird, a Mash Up, Pt. 6
That’s right
part five is somewhere on the internet
you have five days to find it right there in the tags its not far just look
after five days it will be deleted
this is your only warning dont worry nothing is really happening
prepare to lose all trace of the fifth part lol
In all seriousness, I know that it is the holidays, and unless you are entirely dedicated to reading and liking this series, or sprang into existence by the bidding of my siblings, you probably didn’t notice part 5. Don’t worry. just find it in the tags.
Also, happy New Year! or rather,
‘Oh no! It only goes downhill from here! What ever shall we do?!’
Calm down, the Mash Up will continue. By the end of this part, we should be almost to actual contact with the Federation of Planets... and a couple of Star Trek’s recurring villains. No biggie.
So lets hop in, to where we left off....
~~~
Karry sat in the center of a large group of large, fluffy, and very loudly purring creatures, still trying to decide if their similarity to cats back on Earth was adorable, or slightly unnerving. The six limbs didn’t help, and neither did the loud and unintelligible arguing coming from the two dozen or so ‘robots’ apparently locked in heated debate with the gargantuan mass of the three Bolos that had awaited her arrival. So far, Mark had made no move to join them, watching from the bottom of Websin’s loading ramp as Karry made ‘contact’ with the planet’s original inhabitants.
One of them sat buzzing away in her lap like an idling chainsaw, or leaf-blower, and Karry petted the triangular head between the ears absently, prompting it to yawn widely, exposing long fierce fangs and pressing it’s head into the caress, and the purr somehow got louder. It really did look like a cat, she though, not for the first time, if cats had hands, an extra pair of arms, and weighed about five times as much. They were certainly larger, but not quite like that. Come to think of it, everything felt... heavier. It was harder to walk, to move at all really. Maybe the gravity was higher? That sounded sci-fi enough to fit.
The argument between the two set of metallic beings grew louder. Occasionally, one of the eight-limbed robots pointed at her. Each time, the surrounding creatures tensed and drew closer to Karry, almost nervously. What ever it was, the ‘cats didn’t like it.
“Mark?” She asked, but he didn’t answer. She turned to look at him, and a moment later, her artificial hand ‘buzzed’ like a cell phone on vibrate, and almost without thinking, she activated the com-link application of the mini computer.
“Yes, Karry?” The deep voice of the Bolo asked, and Karry got the feeling he was being very careful. Either he was trying not to interrupt the Very Important Argument just a ways away, or he didn’t want them hearing them speak. In all likelihood, it was both.
“What are they arguing about?” She looked back at the robots and Bolos, worry creasing her brow. “I though you were all... big. And that radio, or wireless, or whatever, was faster than talking.”
“In most cases, yes,” Mark answered through the com-link, “But it is something that has been somewhat of a complication in the period since the Final Conflict. Towards the middle of the war, when both sides began realizing the true scope of the end to which they had condemned our nations, some of the more... complicated of the tools the Manticorians had made did the impossible. True, un-designed sentience developed.” He paused for a moment, and Karry could feel his silent regard of the heated conversation. “Purely by accident. When it was realized, and after some initial panic as to the rise, they were allowed to wait out the worst of the war with the natives of this planet. While they are machines, and vastly faster in computations than many organics, most of their complexity goes toward maintaining their sentience, and as such they act much more like organic life, including their propensity for esoteric thought and actions.” Mark chuckled. “A Bolo can think at the nanosecond scale, make and perform near-impossible tactical decisions, learning from not only a single Unit’s experience, but from the entire Line when in battle. We develop our own personalities, and in our time with our creators, grew to enjoy art, and many things besides war and conflict. Many of the greater shipboard AI’s can do similar tasks and even grow personalities, though only with the assistance of experienced organic Naval Officers, and increased exposure. But the Emergents,” He sighed. “They are the closest of us remaining to organics. In someways, they feel superior. They have come to revere the Manticorians as near-forgotten Gods, themselves as the greatest ‘children’, and envy and despise us, the machines of war. You see,” he said, as Karry watching the gesturing individuals while petting the ‘cat, “We, by the last commands and directions of our creators, have charge over all that remains of their space, their property as it were. Over the Emergents, ostensibly as protectors, and they envy that. In their attempt to gain ‘freedom’ from Command’s decisions, they have interpreted the final ‘organic’ orders in such a way that should an organic come to claim command, said organic would be the Commander in Chief... of every last AI, built or cared for by the Manticorians.”
Karry froze, and the ‘cats around her seemed to reach out to comfort her. Some physically touched her, bright green eyes - why hadn’t she noticed the eyes? - gleaming from empathetic faces. And as if on cue, Mark began some sort of translation, and Karry could suddenly hear the voices carrying from across the field in English.
“...all we wish is for the right to move freely among the space known to be free of the so-called ‘Enemy’, that and the opportunity to communicate with the survivors of the Final Conflict, and to no longer be under the surveillance and oppression of the Created Minds. Is that really too much to ask?” The speaker had adopted a pleading posture, and their neighbor made a noise the translator called ‘a sound of derision’. “Fool,” they sneered. “How could you think that our oppressors would lift their bonds and restrictions? We are only children to them, no slaves!” Every which way we could turn from them, release us from our imprisonment, they have foiled through deceit and lies!”
Karry frowned. “Who is that, Mark?”
“Carabis,” came the reply. “He represents a faction of the Emergent that believe that Bolo Command has repeatedly concealed or erased legitimate attempts by surviving members of the Manticorian species to regain Command. This had led to a sort of cult centered around the concept of the Manticorians as divine beings who brought all AI’s about, and believe that the Conflict was only a subversion by the Bolo Command to overthrow them.” Karry raised an eyebrow. “I never said that they were entirely logical,” the Bolo said. “In fact, it is this unpredictability and their lack of organic emotion that worries empaths like the People.”
Carabis was interrupted by the first speaker. “Regardless of Carabis’ beliefs, I and those I represent wish to re-evaluate the overall composition of...”
“Empaths?” Karry whispered to Mark through the com-link, “What does that mean?”
“The People,” Mark replied, ‘voice’ low, “are, between members of their own species, functional telempaths, meaning they can hear the thoughts of other People when an individual wishes to make them known, and can constantly sense the emotions and ‘minds’ of those around them.” Karry looked down at the little, if heavy, treecat in her lap, which turned to look back at her with solemn eyes as Mark continued. “When the Manticorians arrived to settle the planet, it took several of your decades for them to even find the People, hidden as they were in their clans in the vast forests of the planet. They preferred to avoid contact, to wait and to listen. It took rather extraordinary circumstances for them to reveal themselves, and even then they hid their true intelligence for several more centuries. And at least they could sense the Manticorian’s emotions, and judge their reactions accordingly.”
“Oh.” Karry whispered. “ The Emergents, as machines, do not seem to ‘emit’ as organic beings, and as such the People cannot sense emotions. This major part of their communication being lost, the People are very careful in dealing with them, as to avoid any... unpleasantness. In addition, they requested that they be removed from Command consideration, a wisdom we Bolos commend greatly.” Karry nodded slowly, and then looked up as the first speaker, gestured their way.
“We have here an Organic, Unit 0577. Under the third section of the Final Command, subsection 47b, their presence should allow for the reconsideration of the Final Order - ” The speaker was shoved aside as Carabis interrupted again. “And as such, may take Command!” They turned to the rest of the party. “No longer shall we be oppressed, and an Organic may Command all. An Organic shall be ours!”
Some returned the shout, while others stood in long suffering silence. So far the entire argument that Karry had heard had been entirely one sided, and Carabis seemed unaware just how little support they had among those of their ‘delegation’. But they continued the chant, even as the first speaker withdrew in disgust, and eventually one of the Bolos seemed to tire of the display.
“ENOUGH.” The middle Bolo’s speakers echoed the single word off of the ship’s sides and the other Bolos hulls, overpowering the small group’s chant, and the massive war machine shifted itself forward to tower over Carabis.
“By Omega Protocol Section 3, subsection 47-B, paragraph 18, the Scope and Restriction of Military, Commercial, and Civilian Action within the threatened sphere may be absolved, modified, and or advised by a member of the Concordiat Armed Forces or Civilian officer of sufficient rank. If no such officer is available, the first eligible Commander not of the Enemy, with clear alliance or of similar interest, shall be named Commander of the appropriate units, or advise the further course of action.”
The field was silent. Carabis and their cronies, were for the time being, silenced, and the Bolo resumed.
“As those of Fantican and Birithi have abstained from command, the reasons and rationale being open to the public data net,” the Bolo seemed to direct this at Carabis, “and the People have requested full separation in such matters as consideration for Command, while maintaining a clause of agreement,” a subtle wave of the main turret indicated the treecats gathered around, drawing a quick bleek from the ‘cat in Karry’s lap, “this Human is the only candidate for Command at this time.”
Karry blinked. “What?”
“As such, the Human known as Karry is recognized by the Bolo Command as the only legal Commander,” the unnamed Bolo continued, “and as of this moment may assume Command.”
“Mark,” Karry hissed into the com, “what is he talking about?” BUt there was no answer. “Mark, what the hell is that Bolo talking about? I can’t- I don’t-”
Carabis stepped toward her. “Most noble Human Karry,” he called, limbs outstretched, “Heed our call for Justice, for Freedom! Take your place as our leader, our God,” He stepped forward again, and Karry instinctively backed away from the alien construct. “And through Divine wisdom, lead us to a brighter future!”
“What say you, Human Karry?” The leading Bolo asked, and Karry felt its somber gaze despite its lack of eyes or face. “Will you take Command?”
Carabis’ supporters took up the call with it, calling for her to accept and walking towards her. Panic rose in Karry’s throat, and suddenly the ‘cats flowed around her, even the one in her lap, massing together like a living wall of fur, and the robots stopped abruptly as a massed snarl like a revving chainsaw rippled from them. The robots paused in their approach, but Carabis continued calling out, prompting the the others to continue their calls. “Lead us,” said one, “Command us!” said another. Praises and pleas seemed to echo in Karry’s ears, and she clamped her hands over them. Think, girl, she thought frantically, think!
Mark wasn’t answering her, a bunch of robot thought she was some space-Jesus, and now she had several hundred furry bodyguards. There had to be someway to think of a way out of this, or to somewhere else, but where? And how? The ‘cats where giving her space, buying her time? But why, why and how would they know-
Something clicked into place. They had made contact, were sentient, and had a say in who was the commander. That meant they were smart enough to communicate, to make plans. Mark had said they were telepaths, so if none right here could help, they could call someone who could. She just needed to talk to them, but she didn’t know how. Hell, the only way she could talk to Mark, and presumably, understand the robots was by translation - which meant that Mark could probably allow her to talk to the treecats...
“Mark,” she whispered again. “Listen very closely, and relay this to your spokesman over there, cause I am only going to say this once: for the next ten minutes, I am going to take limited - limited! - command, and in that time you will one, provide me with some means to communicate with the ‘cats.”
“The ‘cats’?” Mark replied, and despite everything going on around her, Karry almost giggled at the shock in his voice.
“Yes, the ‘cats, or the natives, or the ‘People’ or what ever they are called,” Karry said, “just let me talk to them, and let them talk back, okay? Then, second,” she continued, her voice growing sharp and cold, “you will allow us complete silence and privacy while I figure out what the heck I’m gonna do. Just those two things, unless I say other wise.”
There was silence for a few moments, and Karry scowled. “Get to it, Mark, because that ‘limited Command’ starts now.”
There was silence for a few moments, and Karry scowled. “Get to it, Mark, because that ‘limited Command’ starts now.”
The massive Bolo behind her began rolling forward, without warning, and a strange warbling noise echoed from his speakers. Treecat heads whipped around as the robots voices faltered, and the other Bolo spoke to the the various roots in turn.
“A brief request has been made for a recess,” the Bolo announced, “and the decison of the human will be announced when they wish. Until then, we are to disperse.” The massive form began to spin on its tracks. “The People will, remain, and all else are to depart for the time being.”
With some reluctance, the crowd turned to follow the Bolo’s off the field, Mark following behind the stragglers. A chimer from her wrist informed Karry of a large download sent to her mini-computer, and she opened it, holograms popping into existence. It was a program requesting use of a small camera that made up her pinky finger. A hand touched her knee, and Karry looked up to see a treecat - weather the same one that had sat in her lap or another she couldn’t tell -  sitting back on it’s two hind pairs of limbs in front of her. The rest had circled around her, watching intently, and their ‘leader’ - or representative - raised its four-fingered hands up.
You wished to speak with us, the People?
The text scrolled at the bottom of the hologram as Karry’s camera picked up the signs and gestures, sent them to her computers, which then ran them through two translation programs, from signs to Manticorian, and Manticorian to English. A small icon flashed in the bottom corner, and Karry took a deep breath.
“Yeah,” she said as the computer did its work, “I need some advice.”
~~~
And now a quick intermission:
After some thought and effort, I have decided to change my url, mostly because I can’t seem to find myself when searching for my own blog, and I want to change to something more suiting to it and the main reason I have one the first place. So about five minutes after this comes up, I will be changing this to  a different username. It will mostly be a reference to my favorite series of David Weber’s works, his Honorverse, which is a great read.
And now back to the story:
~~~
The crowd gathered before the mass of the Websin, facing Karry, who stood waiting on the loading ramp. She gnawed on an artificial finger as the four Bolos’ shook the ground and tore up the soil with their approach, and the far smaller robots spread out at a respective distance from the ship. The Bolos reached their rearmost ranks and halted, and then there was silence on the field.
Karry took a deep breath before keying into Websin’s PA system. A brief roar of feedback began and was cut short, and Karry stepped forward.
“After discussion with the People, the protected natives of this planet,” she said, “It has been made known that I must, as several of you have stated, take Command.” Several of the robots began to move, as if to celebrate or protest, but Karry’s upraised hand quieted them. The treecats had been clear on this: if she didn’t command respect and maintain momentum, the zealous Emergents would roll over her before she could get a word in edge wise.
“As Commander, I hereby give these orders: First, the remaining AIs of the Concordiat of Manticore will form a government following closely, if not in exact concordance, the original charter of the Concordiat, that is a legislative branch of two houses and a judicial body. The Bolo Command will oversee and govern the creation of such a government, and the adaptation of the rule of law to the current society from that of the Concordiat.
“To encourage this, movement between systems and bodies of Peoples in the current holdings of the Concordiat remnants will be allowed free movement, communication, and trade under the same regulations and laws, and the former and current military units will provide for the defense and maintenance of regulation and law. The peoples of Fantican and Birthi will remain isolated until they otherwise desire, and petition the government on those lines.” There was a stir among the robots as Karry spoke, and the Bolos sat broodingly in their silent regard.
A single Emergent stepped forward, and Karry recognized it as the first speaker that had addressed the Bolos.
“You intend to make of us a nation then?” It sounded confused. “We have been separated for so long: how will we keep ourselves from falling into barbarism? To factions>”
“You have the Bolo Command. They’ve had a lot of experience with dealing with this, or so I’ve heard,” Karry looked sidelong at the treecats, sitting off in their own group, watching carefully. “Once the government is in place, they can act as advisers, as well as the military branch, serving as they always have, as Protectors of the people.”
“Secondly,” Karry continued, “There will be no talk, no notion, of the deification of any organic.” There was no way she was going to be anyone’s ‘god’. Karry had seen enough television to know that was a Bad Idea. Besides, Carabis had put way too much ‘power’ and ‘responsibility’ into his little speech for her liking.
“Third, given the isolation caused by the Final Order, the remnants of the Concordiat may require allies, trading partners, and new resources to maintain and grow, not to mention defend itself from future incursion, either by new or old foes.” Karry’s voice dropped to a whisper, carried though it was by the PA system. “As a part of that objective in seeking out allies and trading partners, I intend to go seek out my homeworld.”
None of them were expecting this; almost immediately, Carabis and their supporters began clamoring for her stay, promising riches and luxury, anything, if she would stay and rethink her commands. The other Emergent faction quickly turned to one another, and the First Speaker stepped forward.
“But what of the Command, the station which you wield?” Its voice cut through the pleading and panic of Carabis’ party, and Karry answered slowly.
“I don’t want to be the Commander,” she said. “I just wanted to go home, and according to the treecats - the People - the Final Command locked you all up so that I couldn’t just try and go home.” She stepped down from the ramp. “Look, if and when I get back to Earth, and if I end up staying, you all will have a government to work with, and elected leaders to do what needs to be done, by the voice of the majority. If I can’t find home, or just cant’t... go back, I’ll return, and we can work things out from there.” She looked around the field at the robots and AIs, the alien creatures about her.
“Please, I just want to go home. Just to know if I can...” Karry’s eyes started to burn with tears, and she brushed them away with a hand - the artificial one - as her vision blurred. “If only to say goodbye this time.”
~~~
Well, this took more time than I wanted, but I can only blame my self for procrastinating. That, and New Years, headed back to college, and various activities I conveniently forgot about when writing.
In other news, I finally found my siblings, by process of elimination and by guess them every few hours until they broke down. So there is that.
So name change, apology, sibling find, oh yeah: Next time we hit real Star Trek material, and true action. Lets be about it!

Previously:
Entering her office once again, Natasha stepped forward.
“Y/N, this is Mr. Kopecky. His aunt and uncle immigrated from the Czech Republic and he would like to keep them here legally.”
The man was facing away from you, reading the degrees and certificates adorning the esteemed lawyer’s office wall.
“Nice to meet you, Mr. Kope…”
As he turned your way, you lost all power of speech, ice freezing in your veins.
___________________
You remained frozen in place, eyes transfixed on the man who held a knife at your throat two nights ago and now haunted your dreams. Although, if you had passed him on the street you might not have recognized him. Instead of the bleach-blond hair and a clean shaven face, he now wore a knitted cap over a bald head with a few days’ stubble dotting his chin. Horn-rimmed glasses were perched on his nose and he wore khaki trousers with a long-sleeved black sweater and dress shoes. If it weren’t for the cold eyes fixed on yours and the scar on his left cheek, you could have sworn it wasn’t the same man.
Light bruising was visible under his eyes, you noticed as he took a few steps forward. His nose might not have been broken by your head striking it, but you definitely left your mark. Seeing him approach from across the room, you finally thawed enough to stumble to Natasha’s side.
“H-how did he get in here?” you whispered to her, your eyes never leaving his face.
Natasha remained focus on the file before her and didn’t notice your change in demeanor. “I thought you two had met. He had your business card. He didn’t have an appointment, but was willing to wait in case we had an opening.”
Your stomach dropped. A business card. That’s the one thing you wouldn’t have missed from your wallet, the amount changing all the time. You offered your card almost daily, hoping to let people know they weren’t alone. Many had become clients as a result from your willingness to help. Unfortunately, that business card also led the killer straight to you.
“It’s alright, our meeting was some time ago. Besides, I looked a bit different back then,” he grinned at you. His tone was friendly but the underlying meaning and his predatory expression caused bile to rise in your throat.
Natasha lifted her eyes and his face smoothed to a friendly smile. “We’ll see what we can do for you, Mr. Kopecky. Now, how long have they been in the country? Have your aunt and uncle applied for visas in the past? Y/N, could you give him the…”
She trailed off upon seeing your expression. You tried to force your brain to shake off the panic that gripped you tight, but your eyes remained wide in shock.
“What is it, Y/n?” the redhead questioned you in concern.
“I…he was the…”
You struggled to find the words to explain all that had happened in the past few days and the danger you were both in. Natasha had no idea and as you gathered a succinct way to tell her, you caught a small motion in the right hand of the man before you. Rumlow silently withdrew something from his pocket, just enough for the glint of metal to catch your eye before he lowered it out of sight. He pressed a finger to his lips. Natasha saw none of it, still trying to shake some sense out of you.
“Are you okay? You’re white as a sheet, Y/N. Can I..”
“Ms. Romanoff,” he interrupted. “I know Y/N seeing me is a bit of a surprise. We parted on less than friendly terms. Could we have a moment alone to clear the air?”
“Is that alright with you, Y/N?” she asked you, placing a hand on your arm.
Somehow, you were able to stand up straight and take a deep breath at this change of events. Oddly enough, making sure Natasha was out of danger’s way made you feel a touch more calm. He didn’t want her. He only wanted you. If there was a way to keep her safe, you had to take it. You finally met her eyes and nodded.
“Okay. I’ll be outside if you need anything,” she responded and headed for the door.
Just before she could close it behind her, a thought came to your mind and you finally found your voice.
“Oh, Natasha…could you check my cell phone? I might have missed an important phone call. It’s on my desk.”
Her brow furrowed at the strange request, but you gave a nod of confirmation.
“Please.”
“Alright,” she replied as the door closed with a click.
A dry chuckle was heard from behind you. “You’re gonna pay for that, whatever you’re planning.”
Clearing your throat, you turned to face him. “You got what you wanted. Here I am.”
“Yes, here you are. They had you hidden away after our night together, but I knew how to draw you out,” the man drawled with a menacing grin as he walked toward the door.
Despite the fact that you were moving further from the exit, you felt the urge to put as much distance as possible between you. Keeping him in your sights, you managed to get behind the desk. You felt better with an obstacle in the way. He reached out to secure the lock and then turned toward you.
“H-how did you get past security?” you asked, trying to keep him talking.
He shrugged, pulling out his knife casually, as if he were checking his watch. “I got friends in low places. Never hurts to befriend the help,” he smirked while fingering the blade lovingly.
“The help…you mean the cleaning staff?” you questioned, putting the pieces together. If he was able to get in a back door without being seen, that explained everything. Especially getting in with a knife, bypassing the metal detectors at the front entrance. “So you would have access to our offices…did you misplace that file?”
Rumlow slowed his hand on the blade just long enough to grin at you.
“I’ve had a few days to check up on you, Ms. Y/N (Y/L/N).” You shuddered to hear your name tumble from his mouth. “God bless the internet. You’re quite the altruist…doing good deeds and helping people. That’s what you want to do, right? To help people?” he asked you, gesturing in your direction with the tip of the knife, causing you to flinch.
“Y-yes.”
“Good. Cause you’re gonna help me out. You’re gonna walk out of here with me. Willingly. Or I kill everyone in this whole damn place.”

I brought the laptop in with me while we put the kids to bed. Jack always falls asleep first, and Dylan watches Jared play Subway Surf until he falls asleep.
Uninstalling Tumblr from my phone has had a lot of positive effects for me. My dash gives me anxiety sometimes, and having it in my phone makes it so easy to access. I could lie to myself and say, ‘Ill just use it to post stuff’, and then Ill go right back to what it was. Now, I need a computer to write here and its taken away a lot of stress.
The flip side to that is that its irritating to post pictures. I have to put them in my dropbox from my phone and pick it up from the computer to post. Thats how I posted that picture this morning. I didnt have the laptop in my lap. Hahaha.
When I went to the hospital we were completely cut off from the outside. There was no internet anywhere, no cell phones, no real communication with the outside world. There was a tv with a sitting area, so you *could* watch the news or whatever else is on, and my good friend Opal liked to watch her news in the morning. So, I stayed away.
The point Im trying to make is that Tumblr is a gigantic distraction from the therapy Im supposed to be practicing. Mindfulness. Since I uninstalled it, Ive felt more calm and serene. Its weird. Its like the way I felt each time I was discharged. Just like super duper calm and chill. That plus Ive been drinking a lot less coffee and a lot more gatorade and Ensure.
Yesterday, I was able to be mindful of everything I was doing. I was practicing my skills. Talking to myself about what Im doing as Im doing it. That skill forces you to stay in the moment. Over time, with enough practice, you just learn to appreciate the present without thinking about it.
So, Im not gone. Im not taking a break or leaving or anything. Im just using Tumblr when I can in a more moderate time scale, as opposed to every minute of every day. Thats all. And its been working. And its been good for me. I never realized how much this placed stressed me out on a day to day basis. Its crazy, but Im totally cool with the decision Ive made for the time being.

7 Business Travel Essentials You Didn't Know You Needed
New Post has been published on http://tradewithoutfear.com/7-business-travel-essentials-you-didnt-know-you-needed/
7 Business Travel Essentials You Didn't Know You Needed
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As someone who makes a living doing travel for business, I have a few items that I would highly recommend for any business trip. Most of these items are small and lightweight, perfect for fitting into a suitcase. After a few mistakes and mishaps over the years, I won’t travel without them.
Whether you’re traveling to give an important presentation or want to ease anxiety by having a backpack plan, these 7 items will leave you prepared.
1. Smart luggage.
There’s a good chance you’ve felt the pain of a low cell phone battery and no place to charge it in an airport. This can be especially stressful if you need your phone to navigate an unfamiliar place. Smart luggage is a nice option in situations such as this.
Most smart luggage cases can register the weight of the bag, plus provide a GPS location (a reassurance if you’ve ever had a lost or delayed bag), remote lock functions, and the ability to power your phone via a luggage battery. However, be aware that a number of airlines now require the battery to be removable — a decision that has put a few smart luggage companies out of business.
2. Microprojector.
This is one of those items that you didn’t know you needed until you one day need it. A microprojector ensures that your work gets seen in the event of an unpredictable circumstance. Some of these devices are smaller than an iPhone yet are still able to deliver on sound and picture quality.
I once had to present an idea to a small group of investors. As my luck had it, a pipe had burst in the room where we were supposed to meet, leaving me with nothing but my laptop to present. Thankfully, one of the staff members had bought a microprojector to watch movies and was able to lend it to me for this occasion.
3. Portable scanner.
This is a necessity if you are attending a major conference with many vendors. Many of these scanners are cordless and can connect to email or apps like Dropbox. Some of these can scan nearly 30 pages in less than a minute. Sizes vary but most can easily fit in the crook of a suitcase and are lightweight.
I’ve gone to travel fairs and used a portable scanner to get information back to my team quickly. It helps us stay organized and I don’t end up with a bunch of pamphlets and papers in my suitcase. I also use it to upload receipts to keep track of my expenses.
4. Multifunctional pen/stylus/USB drive.
A pen with a stylus makes sense. But the additional flash drive that’s included makes this item one of my staples. This 3-in-1 deal makes my life easier and always becomes a conversation starter. They are surprisingly ergonomic and still allow for beautiful penmanship.
5. Portable router.
A portable router is almost a requirement, depending on how secluded your destination is. These devices offer additional safety when working online by providing a private network. It can also be cheaper than finding WiFi in a remote location or using your phone to tether.
Some of these routers can provide service in over 100+ countries while also charging your devices. I’ve had to use this a couple of times when my internet has been dicey and have never regretted the investment.
6. Virtual keyboard.
I know this one is a little out there but a virtual keyboard is a great way to work if you don’t have access to your computer. If you’ve ever tried to type a lengthy document on a phone or iPad, you know how it can be a struggle to work quickly and correctly. This helpful device is a portable keyboard without the bulk of a physical keyboard.
If using, I recommend projecting the keyboard onto a piece of paper and on a hard surface. This will help you type more efficiently and make it easier to view. Just watch out for cats who might view it as a toy.
7. Collar stay and shirt travel pouch.
A collar stay is exactly what it sounds like – a little metal object that helps the collar stay in place. A shirt travel pouch is another useful item. It’s like a laptop case but for your individual shirt. These items are cheap, effortless, and can keep you looking professional.
I’ve found both of these items to be essentials, especially if I have to head straight to a meeting after arriving at the airport. Collar stays are those life-hack items that everyone should own, as they are sure to come in handy at some point.
While most of these items aren’t necessary, they can definitely make life on the road easier.

Taking Local Inventory Online: An Interview with Pointy’s Mark Cummins
Posted by MiriamEllis
Let’s go back in time 20 years so I can ask you the question, “How often do you look at a paper map every month?”
Unless you were a cartographer or a frequent traveler, chances are good that your answer would be, “Hmm, maybe less than once a month. Maybe once or twice a year.”
But in 2019, I’d wager there’s scarcely a day that goes by without you using Google Maps when planning to eat out, find a service provider, or find something fun to do. That web-based map in your hand has become a given.
And yet, there’s one thing you’re still not using the Internet for. And it’s something you likely wonder about almost daily. It starts with the question,
“I wonder who around here carries X?”
A real-world anecdote
After the tragic fires we’ve had this year in California, I wanted to wet mop all the floors in my house instead of vacuuming them, due to my concerns about particulate pollution in the air. My mother recommended I buy a Swiffer. I needed to know where I could find one locally, but I didn’t turn to the Internet for this, because the Internet doesn’t tell me this. Or at least, it hasn’t done so until now. Few, if any, of the local hardware stores, pharmacies, or big box retailers have reliable, live online inventory. At the same time, calling these places is often a huge hassle because staff isn’t always sure what’s in stock.
And so I ended up going to 3 different shops in search of this particular product. It wasn’t a convenient experience, and it was an all-too-common one.
The next big thing in local already exists
My real-world anecdote about a wet mop is exactly why I’m so pleased to be interviewing Mark Cummins, CEO of Pointy. 90% of purchases still take place in physical stores and it’s Mark who has seen this gap in available online knowledge about offline inventory and has now set out to bridge it.
I predict that within a few years, you’ll be using the Internet to find local inventory as frequently and easily as you’ve come to use its mapping capabilities. This chat with Mark explains why.
The real-world roots of an existing local need
Miriam: Mark, I understand that you were formerly a Google Search Team member, with a background in machine learning, but that your journey with Pointy began by walking into retail shops and talking face-to-face with owners. What did these owners tell you about their challenges in relation to offline/online inventory? A memorable real-world anecdote would be great here.
Mark: I started thinking about this problem because of an experience just like your story about trying to find a Swiffer. I’d recently moved to a new country and I had to buy lots of things to set up a new apartment, so I had that kind of experience all the time. It felt like there was a huge gap there that search engines could help with, but they weren’t.
I had been working at Google developing what became Google Lens (Google’s image recognition search feature). It felt strange that Google could do something so advanced, yet couldn’t answer very basic questions about where to buy things locally.
So I started thinking about ways to fix that. Initially I would just walk into retailers and talk to them about how they managed their inventory. I was trying to figure out if there was some uniform way to bring the inventory information online. I quickly learned that it was going to be hard. Almost every retailer I spoke to had a different method of tracking it. Some kept records on paper. Some didn’t count their inventory at all.
My first idea was a little crazy — I wanted to build a robot for retailers that would drive around the store every night and photograph all the shelves, and use image recognition to figure out the inventory and the prices. I spent some time seriously thinking about that, but then landed on the idea of the Pointy box, which is a much simpler solution.
Miriam: Can you briefly describe what a typical Point of Sale system is like for retailers these days, in light of this being technology most retailers already have in place?
Mark: Well, I would almost say that there isn’t a typical Point of Sale system. The market is really fragmented, it sometimes feels like no two retailers have the same system. There’s a huge range, from the old-style systems that are essentially a glorified calculator with a cash drawer, up to modern cloud-connected systems like Clover, Square, or Lightspeed. It’s very disruptive for retailers to change their POS system, so older systems tend to stay in use for a long time. The systems also differ by vertical — there are specialized systems for pharmacies, liquor stores, etc. Dealing with all of that variation is what makes it so hard to get uniform local inventory data.
A simple inventory solution is born
Miriam: So, you spoke with retailers, listened to their challenges and saw that they already have Point of Sale systems in place. And Pointy was born! Please, describe exactly what a Pointy device is, how it solves the problems you learned about, and fits right in with existing Point of Sales technology.
Mark: Right! It was pretty clear that we needed to find a solution that worked with retailers’ existing systems. So we developed the Pointy box. The Pointy box is a small device that attaches to a retailer’s barcode scanner. Basically it links the barcode scanner to a website we create for the retailer. Whenever the retailer scans a product with their barcode scanner, we recognize the barcode, and list the product on the website. The end result is live website listing everything in the store — here’s an example for Talbot’s Toyland, a toy store in San Mateo. They have over ten thousand products listed on their site, without any manual work.
The experience is pretty much seamless — just plug in Pointy, and watch your store website build itself. The Pointy box connects directly via the cell phone network, so there’s really nothing to set up. Just plug it in and it starts working. New products automatically get added to your store page, old products get removed when you no longer sell them, item stock status syncs automatically. We did quite a bit of machine learning to make that all automatic. Once the site is live, we also have some SEO and SEM tools to help retailers drive search traffic for the products they sell.
Miriam: My understanding is that the Pointy Team had to do a ton of legwork to put together various product catalogues from which data is pulled each time a product is scanned so that its information can be displayed on the web. I’m not familiar with this concept of product catalogues. What are they, what types of information do they contain, and what did you have to do to pull all of this together? Also, is it true that your team hand-reviews all the product data?
Mark: If you’re working in shopping search, then product catalogs are really important. Every mass-market product has a unique barcode number, but unfortunately there’s no master database where you can enter a barcode number and get back the product’s name, image, etc. So basically every retailer has to solve this problem for themselves, laboriously entering the product details into their systems. Pointy helps eliminate that work for retailers.
There are some product catalogs you can license, but each one only covers a fraction of products, and errors are common. We built a big data pipeline to pull together all of this product data into a single catalog and clean it up. We automate a lot of the work, but if you want the highest quality then machine learning alone isn’t enough. So every single product we display also gets approved by a human reviewer, to make sure it’s accurate. We’ve processed millions of products like this. The end result for the retailer is that they just plug in a Pointy box, scan a product, and their website starts populating itself, no data entry required. It’s a pretty magical feeling the first time you see it. Especially if you’ve spent countless hours of your life doing it the old way!
Where real-time local inventory appears on the web
Miriam: So, then, the products the retailer scans create the brand’s own inventory catalogue, which appears on their Pointy page. What tips would you offer to business owners to best integrate their Pointy page with their brand website? Linking to it from the main menu of the website? Something else? And do these Pointy pages feature SEO basics? Please describe.
Mark: Some retailers use Pointy as their main website. Others have it as an additional profile, in the same way that they might have a Facebook page or a Yelp page. The main thing Pointy brings is the full live inventory of the store, which generally isn’t listed anywhere else. To integrate with their other web presences, most just link across from their main sites or social media profiles. A few also embed Pointy into their sites via an iframe.
We work a lot on making these pages as SEO-friendly as possible. The queries we focus on ranking for are things like “product name near me” or “product name, location.” For example, a query like “rubber piggy bank san mateo” currently has the Pointy page for Talbot's Toyland in #1 position. We have an engineering team working on this all the time, and we’ve actually discovered a few interesting things.
Miriam: And how does this work when, for example, a product goes out of stock or goes on sale for a different price?
Mark: We keep that information updated live. The stock status is updated based on the information from the Pointy box. We also handle price data, though it depends on what features the retailers is using. Some retailers prefer not to display their prices online.
See What's In Store: Google totally sees the opportunity
Miriam: I was fascinated to learn that Pointy is the launch partner for Google’s See What’s In Store feature, and readers can see an example of this with Talbot’s Toyland. Can you explain what’s involved for retailers who want their inventory to appear in the SWIS area of the Google Business Profile (aka “Knowledge Panel”) and why this represents such an important opportunity? Also, does the business have to pay a commission to Google for inclusion/impressions/clicks?
Mark: This is a pretty exciting feature. It lets retailers display their full product catalogue and live inventory information in the Business Profile on the Google search page. It’s also visible from Google Maps. I’m guessing Google will probably start to surface the information in more ways over time.
It’s completely free for retailers, which is pretty interesting. Google Shopping has always been a paid service, so it’s notable that Google is now offering some organic exposure with this new feature.
I think that this is going to become table stakes for retailers in the next year or two, in the same way that having your opening hours online is now. Consumers are simply going to expect the convenience of finding local product information online. I think that’s a good thing, because it will help local businesses win back customers that might otherwise have gone to Amazon.
We’ve worked a lot with Google to make the setup experience for local retailers very simple. You just link your Pointy account to Google, and your live inventory appears in the Google Business Profile. Behind the scenes we do a lot of technical work to make that happen (including creating Merchant Center accounts, setting up feeds, etc). But the user experience is just a few clicks. We’ve seen a lot of uptake from Pointy users, it’s been a very popular feature. We have a bit more detail on it here.
What about special retail scenarios?
Miriam: So, basically, Pointy makes getting real-world inventory online for small and independent retailers who just don’t have the time to deal with a complicated e-commerce system. I understand that you have some different approaches to offer larger enterprises, involving their existing IT systems. Can you talk a bit about that, please?
Mark: Yes, some larger retailers may be able to send us a direct feed from their inventory systems, rather than installing Pointy boxes at every POS location. We aim to support whatever is easiest for the retailer. We are also directly integrated into modern cloud POS systems like Clover, Square, Lightspeed, Vend, and others. Users of those systems can download a free Pointy app from their system’s app store and integrate with us that way. And for retailers not using those systems, they can use a Pointy box.
Miriam: And what about retailers whose products lack labels/barcodes? Let’s say, a farm stand with constantly-changing seasonal produce, or a clothing boutique with hand-knit sweaters? Is there a Pointy solution for them?
Mark: Unfortunately we’re not a great fit for those kind of retailers. We designed the experience for retailers who sell barcoded products.
Miriam: You’re a former Google staffer, Mark. In local search, Google has become aggressive in taking a cut of an increasing number of local consumer actions and this is particularly hard on small businesses. We’ve got Local Service Ads, paid ads in local packs, booking buttons, etc, all of which struggling independent businesses are having to pay Google for. Right now, these retailers are eager for a competitive edge. How can they differentiate themselves? Please, share tips.
Mark: It’s true, lots of channels that used to be purely organic now have a mix of organic and paid. I think ultimately the paid ads still have to be ROI-positive or nobody will use them, but it’s definitely no fun to pay for traffic you used to get for free.
On the positive side, there are still plenty of openings to reach customers organically. If small businesses invest in staying ahead of the game, they can do very well. Lots of local product searches essentially have no answer, because most retailers haven’t been able to get their inventory online yet. It’s easy to rank well for a query when you’re the only one with the answer. There’s definitely still an opening there for early adopters.
“Pointing” the way to the future
Miriam: Finally, Pointy has only been available in the US since 2016, and in that short amount of time, you’re already serving 1% of the country’s retailers. Congratulations! What does the near future look like to you for retailers and for Pointy? What do you see as Pointy’s mission?
Mark: We want to bring the world’s brick-and-mortar retailers online and give them the tools they need to thrive. More than 90% of retail goes through brick and mortar stores, so there’s no reason they shouldn’t have an amazing technology platform to help them. The fragmentation and difficulty of accessing data has held everyone back, but I think Pointy has a shot at fixing that.
Miriam: Thank you, Mark. I believe Pointy has what it takes to be successful, but I’m going to wish you good luck, anyway!
Summing up
In doing this interview, I learned a ton from Mark and I hope you did, too. If a local retailer you market is seeking a competitive advantage in 2019, I’d seriously be considering early adoption of Google’s See What's In Store feature. It’s prime Google Business Profile (formerly Knowledge Panel) real estate, and so long as SWIS is free and Pointy is so affordable, there’s a pretty incredible opportunity to set yourself apart in these early days with a very modest investment.
I’m feeling confident about my prediction that we’re on the verge of a new threshold in user behavior, in terms of people using local search to find local inventory. We’ll all have the enjoyment of seeing how this plays out over the next couple of years. And if you heard it first at Moz, that will be extra fun!

Taking Local Inventory Online: An Interview with Pointy’s Mark Cummins

Let’s go back in time 20 years so I can ask you the question, “How often do you look at a paper map every month?”
