Fives's eyes are wide, wider than normal, and his footfall is stumbling and his speech is beginning to slur, but it's not until he buckles forward and grabs him by the shoulders that Kix finally notices--
Oh. Oh, by the Sea. He's missing a finger.
Oh, stars above. He's not wearing his ring.
Oh, Bright Force.
He's dying.
"Fives," he gasps. Horrified. "You're not- your ring-"
"I know. I took it off. Had to-- had'ta cut it off, actually."
"Fives, you'll die!" He takes his brother's mangled, still-bleeding hand in his own two, oh so gently, but Fives simply pulls it away and raises it in a gesture of *stop*.
"No. No, I'm not gonna... no, I won't die." He makes a face. "Well. Okay. I might die. But not cause'a the ring. I was poisoned. Neurotoxin. In my tea." He takes a shuddering breath and collapses again, pressing his flushed face into the crook of Kix's neck for a brief moment of respite from what must be a throbbing headache. He comes up again almost instantly. "Not... important right now. Kix, we're being deceived."
There is an urgency in his tone, a desperation in his eyes, and it scares Kix. Deeply. His brother, his vod-- his frater-- he's normally so level-headed. So straightforward. So clear and calm and composed.
What could have possibly done this to the unflappable ARC Legionary?
"Frater meus, what do you mean?" he murmurs, resting a cool (bloody) hand against Fives's cheek. (He starts to lean into it but forces his eyes open and pulls away.)
"Kix. Please. Listen to me. I don't... have the time to explain it right, right now." He takes a deep breath, straightens his spine, and takes a few stumbling steps back. "But I promise, I'll tell you everything, when- when I'm better. I need you to do something for me, though. Please, Kix, if you've ever loved me, or any of our brothers. I need you to contact the Captain. General Skywalker, too, if you can. 'S an abandoned... tavern. Lower levels of the Island. Tell them to meet me there." He's halfway to the door already.
"Wait," Kix half-pleads, and Fives stops. "Wait. You said you were poisoned. Please, Fives, I'll talk to the Captain, but come with me back to the barracks. I'm sure I have an antidote somewhere, and you're clearly not--"
"Kix." His slurring is getting worse by the second, but his voice is gentle and warm and sad. "There's no time. I can't stay much longer; the High King put a bounty on my head and I'm sure the Guard are all over the Island looking for me. This tavern's probably one of the first places they'll search. And, Kix, frater, vod, you didn't come to the bar to play doctor. But I promise you, as soon as I've relayed my message to the Captain, you can give me the antidote and fix up my finger and do anything you feel the need to do to make me better."
There are tears in Kix's eyes that he knows he has no time to shed. He just wants to help.
He knows that, right now, there's only one way he can.
"Okay. But please, Fives. Don't die before then."
His plea earns him a sad, tired smile. "Promitto." I swear it.
He falters away again. Shakes his head to reorient himself and heads for the door.
The stump of his finger is still dripping blood.

#First one is THE LONG series of GEESE that fly by!!! my aforementioned friends... Or I think I referenced them in tags of some post#days ago. and how I love watching them. See how many there are? And multiple of these will go by. It's like hundreds of them.#Then just the sky because I love the sky. My hair looking ridiculous as it always does when I brush it out of the four big braids I always#keep it in to keep it out of the way lol. I just find it silly how small it can be all braided up and then as soon as it is Released and#combed then it poofs into some sort of swamp dwelling wizard style.#Then... a daily word count... have been so busy the past week that I sadly haven't written much but I'm WORKING on it. Still on the blasted#'odd jobs' tasks sections which were SUPPOSED to be very quick and short. but.. alas.. Though I am on basically the last one. You go work#for one of the enchanting specialists in the city (very important in society since a majority of people cannot do that type of magic) and#basically he just works so much he has no time for a social life so he hires random people to sit with him in the afternoons doing menial#tasks. You show up thinking you'll help with some Important Job or something but hes just like 'no... peel this apple for me.. :)' lol#Edit note: arrgh just had to fish a slippery avocado pit out of a narrow garbage disposal drain with a chopstick. felt like some#sort of taskmaster challenge or something.. gods... I know some people just reach into them. I guess maybe#my hand would fit?? but... erm... scary. what about Sharp Things in there or something.. also Sludge of some sort perhaps.#ANWYAY.. interruption... I got up to go to the kitchen in the middle of typing my tags... lol..#Next image is SLEEPING boye.. And then PIGEONS!!!!!!!!!! my beloveds...#Oh then the giant evil hole in my bathroom ceiling which is STILL not fixed and the repair people still have to come back again.. BUT they#did have this terrible industrial dehumidifier thing they put in the bathroom and just left here for like 5 days and it was like a noisy#hairdryer going at all times and raised the heat in the bathroom from 65F to 76F in like two hours so.. I'm glad at least at their#last arrival they've finally taken it away.... the Noise Beast... silence in my house at last...#though I am still plagued by Mysterious Hole.. the plastic wrap rustles sometimes when I'm in there.... go away...#Ah. Then a delightful little lemon poppyseed muffin someone didn't want and then gave to me. Which was interesting since I haven't#had one in soooo long even though its like a very Classic Flavor.. I do quite like them though now that I've had one again. :0c#Lastly.. mushrooms. I think it's the mushroom season here. Everywhere you go outside there's some new manner of fungus#having popped up from nowhere. I like the variety of all their little shapes. These in particular have an interesting wispy curled layers#sort of look to them. Almost like a shaggy hairstyle that's curled up at the ends or something. They seem neat to draw perhaps.#Okay.. that is all.. Nobody asked, BUT! I think it's always fun to look back on how you used to draw a character :D Soooo, here's mine! Quick rundown.
1.) About a year or 2 ago I began looking at Jael Peñaloza's art trying to figure out what made their art so good AND what made their Sanses look like Sanses. So, that's what I did, took note of how the front of Cross' face was kinda separated from the back and other things like that. 2.) That second drawing is how I draw now, but it looks similar to how I used to draw Sanses so that's why it's 2. I couldn't really find a way to make it look the way it did (bad). So I just substituted with my current style. 3.) After that (and before Tumblr) I drew Sanses like CPAU had them, Crayonqueen/Loverofpiggies' style was fun to try and doodle with while it lasted. It kinda affected my style which shows in 4 when I stopped drawing CPAU things. 4.) The way I drew Sanses sorta amalgamated with the way CrayonQueen drew her's so that's why one part of the skull stuck out lol. No other comments I need to make other than that the fur was a little blocky. 5.) The (current) final product. As I drew I fell back to drawing Sanses like I used to, but better :D I've gotten better with inking and other things. So, yay!

#LOOK AT THE BABIESSS#this is tough#i have my own eurasian kestrel and she is everything so im biased here#i have a lot of favourites though#the runner up is harris hawks because theyre so intelligent and their flight ability is gorgeous and theyre so fun to train#i will say i prefer the call of harris hawks because my kestrel shrieks and it bursts my ear drums </3#a lot of owls cause theyre so beautiful and i love their temperament but also each is very unique and you get to form a bond with each one#ultimately eurasian kestrel is gonna have to win though cause they do a bit of everything that i love about falcons hawks and owls respecti#long wings generally cant be taught “tricks” but kestrels can be— i mean have you SEEN them hovering? they have a lot of manoeuvrability to#you can also do lure work with a kestrel so arabic style lure swinging rather than just as a recall like most hawks#another thing is weight management and feeding schedules compared to bigger falcons like sakers peregrines lanners etc#the rule i was taught with longwings is to feed once a day w/ a big reward#while there are exceptions they generally dont respond that well to small pieces and multiple flights whereas hawks and owls will#kestrels are an exception and do well with that training style#also eurasian kestrels will respond to food even if they’re not necessarily very hungry same as with hawks#which means you can do multiple flights a day and train both short and long distances#you could argue that their size is a disadvantage but personally i really enjoy microfalconry#size doesn't matter (bird edition)#although flying a big hawk owl eagle or gyr will always have a certain <33333 to it i’ll admit#also in my experience kestrels have that intelligence and sociability and variety that you see with owls and a lot of hawks#i think all birds are special and i adore all the raptors that i’ve worked with but i love when they’re very obviously smart#you look in their eyes and you can see them analysing and understanding things around them#smart birds will also challenge you quite a bit#you have to treat them with a lot of respect and consideration to get any back and once you do earn it its the most incredible feeling#and of all the falcons ive worked with eurasian kestrels are the smartest#i wont compare them visually because all birds are so so beautiful but kestrels generally are a joy to watch like hellooooo#so yes i love all raptors and all birds but ultimately kestrels <333333#harris hawks and desert eagle owls are very very close seconds but if I had to choose one then yeah!#ALSO shout out to vultures and eagles i adore them but i dont have much first hand experience (yet!) so they’re not talked abt much#birds

hmmm. discovering that i struggle with writing modern AUs bc I want to use poetic language, but it always seems to jar with the setting. maybe if i get stuck enough i'll say "fuck it" and do that anyway
#like. idk. using more poetic language makes it Feel Older#like it hearkens back to older literature and the style of speaking from past eras#and that clashes really hard with like. motorsports.#but also. the flow is easier for me bc writing more “modern” makes everything feel spartan#and i miss the sensory details...... and the more dramatic tone of my last fic. ik that's what editing is for#but i don't want to cause too much dissonance if the tone doesn't match the setting#but also. if it starts to cause more problems than it already is. might day “fuck it i do what i want”#this is my house#writing woes
