I imagine it’s pretty difficult for him to refuse a copy of Sherlock Holmes in broad daylight. He’s trying so hard not to info dump. Poor Ran just wants to try and get him to remember something. Maybe she’ll return it and get him an abridged version for kids?

How does Ran react to Hattori's visits in the Babyfied Shinichi au? Does she encourage them bc Conan acts more like Shinichi when he's around? ...Does she tell Heiji what's up and ask him to help her with "bringing Shinichi back"?

Ran thinks they’re on the same page, that heiji knows and is trying to gently encourage Shinichi’s memory…Heiji is taking this to his grave

Extremely silly au idea to share with y’all :) Ran gets suspicious but instead of thinking that Conan is simply Shinichi disguised as a kid, she decides that whatever turned him into a kid also messed with his memory, so he truly believes that he is Conan Edogawa, Totally Normal Six Year Old Kid(tm). Since he’s still so smart and so good at deduction, there’s ~clearly~ still some part of him that’s Shinichi, and Ran is determined to gently encourage it. Of course, this causes Shinichi to overcompensate with his cutesy Conan persona, which only reinforces Ran’s beliefs that’s he’s really a babyfied Shinichi. If you can’t tell, I love dramatic irony and identify shenanigans :)

I think Conan’s status as the KID killer would remain largely the same—Ran notices how very Shinichi-like he acts on the chase and will definitely encourage this. However, she’s also very very protective of him in this AU—a fact that Conan will take advantage of to get back at KID from time to time.

the thing is, Ran isn't dumb. many people tend to forget that, minds automatically rationalizing she sacrificed mind for body, utilizing the strength of her punches to break through problems than wit.

which is very stupid for people to think, Shinichi doesn't even have to be in love with Ran to know that she's the best, not perfect, but close enough to it, perhaps, her flaws are what make her human and that's the only thing that makes him think he has a chance with her.

but he's already losing his train of thought, was that because for all his mind was still sixteen, his body was ten years younger, brimming with energy he didn't even notice when he was this young before and therefore, quick to jump ship from the topic than to have a steady streamline?

he was doing it again.

The Point is, Ran isn't dumb. Shinichi knows that. Conan should know that.

but Conan isn't him and the lines between sanity and clarity over this frustrating situation just muddles things up a little. just a little. (it's a lot but he doesn't even have hands big enough to properly unpack the suitcase he's labelled his breakdown.)

so, he slips. he slips and slides. he doesn't know how to be six, even before, he's not what many call a normal six year old. his only saving grace is perhaps what crumbs of the acting lessons his mother once instilled upon him that he did manage to consume.

and he thinks Ran still finds out, she knows him, he knows her.

sometimes, he just wants to stop this farce and to tell her.

(and then he remembers dying. he remembers quiet screams and the steam of what could've been his evaporation, where did his mass all go, really? he doesn't even have time to think of it, mind quiet for all that he wished to speak.

the words always catch in his throat as fear and death grips it with it's nonexistent touch.

he'd never forgive himself if he lets the poison drip from his lips and it makes her feel death's kiss just like he did.)

Ran doesn't talk about it though, just looks at him and he pretends he can't see it, wills his eyes to fog over and retreat into his mind and goes through the motions of whatever kid activity he desperately picked up.

it's when he mimes falling asleep, that thing you do with closing your eyes to try and trick his brain to stop talking, stop thinking and fall, does she tell him.

she knows, she's always been smart, the rush of affection is suffocated by the icy grip of fear, of what ifs, of scenarios where she looks into it and—

she thinks he doesn't remember. she thinks Conan doesn't realize Shinichi is him.

he wants to laugh, hysterical and manic when she leaves and Mouri snores, his giggles are muffled and his ear drums ring.

the thing is, Ran isn't dumb. and honestly, he's starting to think she's right. he doesn't know who he is anymore.

WAHHHHHHHH THIS IS AMAZING?! INCREDIBLE?! I am running around the room rn cause your writing is so full of wonderful emotion!!! This is exactly the kind of angst I imagined in this au!!!

KID in his Shinichi disguise is a really, really good idea! I think you’re right, it wouldn’t go well at all—kind of like a reverse situation as had happened in movie 8 (i think?)—this time, Ran gets standoffish and suspicious at the disguised KID, she sees through him immediately since the real Shinichi is with her and shrunk. Meanwhile, even though it’s internally killing him, Conan is very vocally excited, incessant almost—he sees this as a perfect opportunity to prove to Ran that he is not Shinichi, and of course he has to stay close to KID to make sure he’s not up to something

Awww I’m so happy to hear you like this au!! I think Shinichi’s returns affect Ran greatly. At least once—and shinichi doesn’t remember this at all—she sees him shrink back, so she at least somewhat knows what’s going on. Except, just like how Shinichi knows that taking the cure too often will make it lose its efficacy, Ran starts to believe that every time Shinichi shrinks back, it is becoming more and more permanent, and soon enough, the shinichi she knows will be gone entirely. This isn’t helped by the fact that, with every “close call,” conan decides to redouble his little kid personality.

The babyfied Shinichi au you have going on is doing some things to me, since Shinichi will act as childishly as he can to try to convince Ran that he isn’t Shinichi at all, what would be the most childish thing that Shinichi would do as Conan in an attempt to throw Ran off the scent?

Ooh good question! In order to keep Ran off his scent, Shinichi will act in the most un-Shinichi-like way possible—all weepy and clingy. Except, Ran knows it’s him the whole time (even if she thinks *he* doesn’t know who he is), she thinks this is all some kind of childhood abandonment issue come to light.

When he’s finally cured, Shinichi finds himself all too comfortable with acting all clingy still with Ran.

Something about the babyfied Shinichi AU, considering how much Conan goes out of his way to act like an actual 6-year old kid to throw off Ran from suspecting that he’s really Shinichi especially when Ran is watching him…

How exactly would Conan act around the Detective Boys and those who are supposedly his age? Does he fully commit to being a little kid around them just to keep the act up in case Ran is coming or does he use the time as a break from the act?

When Ran isn’t around, Shinichi can act like his usual Conan self—that is, a barely-disguised genius detective. However, Ran does spend a lot of time around the Detective Boys, so they end up seeing a lot of his more babyfied antics. It’s a lot like that scene in movie 8 (?) where Conan is freaking out cause KID is disguised as him and he’s trying to stop him and Ran from leaving, and the kids are looking on at that whole mess like “…wow Conan is spoiled.” Except this is like all the time, so they don’t have this idea that Conan is some kind of super mature genius kid—he’s more like a regular genius kid. I’m really liking the stuff around the Detective Conan AUs you’re putting out there, something popped into my head when you mentioned that Shinichi doubles down on acting like 6 year old Conan in the Babified Shinichi AU…

I get the idea that he fully throws himself into something like Kamen Yaiba or another children’s tv show and becomes just as much of a fan as the other kids at school of that show just as a way of saying, “I can’t be Shinichi, Shinichi-nii-san wouldn’t be a big fan of Kamen Yaiba like me right Ran-nee-Chan?”

Does this make sense to you or does it only make sense in my head?

Shinichi does something so comically childlike, he thinks he’s finally managed to convince Ran that he’s just a regular kid—except internally, Ran is worried that his old self is gone and he will be a kid forever. It’s really bittersweet for her, since he’s clearly having the fun, normal childhood that I am sure Shinichi did not have.

Of course, this only lasts until the next time Conan pulls his whole detective act, because Shinichi is nothing if not a dramatic know-it-all. At which point, Ran is reassured that the real him is still in there, and resolves to keep hinting at and helping him along.

Have you seen how eagerly he throws himself at an organisation that literally wants him dead? His response to all of haibara's warnings has been "but what if I did anyway?"

Have you seen how Conan acts around kid? He has straight up tried to hit kid out of the sky with a soccer ball on multiple occasions and he literally has the title 'kid killer' shinichi doesn't have that title, kogoro doesn't have that title, Conan does.

Have you seen how he acts around heiji? The show outright shows us that Conan is the reason heiji has no hesitation about breaking and entering for a case anymore.

Normal Conan is far more unhinged than you give him credit for.

It's not that other AUs are more unhinged, they just differ in how the unhinged manifests.

Oh I absolutely agree! That’s why I said babyfied Shinichi was the “normalEST” cause none of them, canon included, are totally normal…all versions of Conan are legally required to be at least a little unhinged ^_^

conanon: in a brilliant moment of word association, this was vaguely inspired by your babyfied shinichi au but it became its own... thing. you'll understand

some aspects in life were just fact. the sky was mainly blue, death comes for life, the sun and moon exist– and the puberty truck comes for everyone.

what is the puberty truck, exactly? many believed it to be magic, it dates back centuries really, multiple tales wherein one gets bowled over by the carriage, cart, etc. once the world deems them fit to begin the process of taking the highway leading to adulthood.

scientists simply believe it to be a mass hallucination, the mind and eyes are so easy to be tricked, the echoing vertigo many experience after being run over isn't akin to the real thing.

that doesn't exactly explain the drivers of said puberty trucks however. because the ones running you over are said to be the ones in the future, to give you a chance to see what you'll look like.

many simply say the truck goes too fast for people to truly confirm it was one's future self, even if the truck comes in a public area and has many witnesses, pictures come up but even if the truck is there (which is alarming in it's own way) the driver is never accurately pictured.

it's a mystery everyone has been dying to solve, though, Shinichi never thought too much of it, more preoccupied with actual crime scenes.

so when puberty hit and the blaring honk of a truck sounded behind him, he didn't expect it.

nor the face of the driver looking at him with a feral glint.

in the future, Conan blinks as he feels a tug and turns to face a truck, somehow looking inconspicuous despite the text of "PUBERTY HITS!" emblazoned on the side.

this was the only chance he could get in knocking some sense into his stupid past self.
