The Madness of Love

In the second half of Phaedrus, Socrates and Phaedrus delve deeper into the abyss to further comprehend what love really is. The first half of the reading revolved more around the differences between the ‘utilitarian’ and ‘complete’ forms of love and what they entail. On the other hand, Socrates goes to almost praise this sense of madness or rashness that he previously criticized. As kirakiraposts brought to light, he brings up this reference of the muses and how madness is a “divine gift” descended from the gods themselves.

From here, Socrates delves into immortality and how love is a product of this madness that is central to the soul. To him, immortality is inherently linked to a sense of ‘movement’, such that continual propagation of life must involve some sort of self-perpetuation. As he details, “but since we have found that a self-mover is immortal, we should have no qualms about declaring that this is the very essence and principle of a soul, for every bodily object that is moved from outside has no soul, while a body whose motion comes from within, from itself, does have a soul…” (Plato 245e) As such there must be some driving inherent driving force that perpetuates a soul’s existence, which momentarily manifests itself in mortal beings only to be liberated upon death. He states that this idea in and of itself is madness, and he relates this back to the gods in that if madness arises from the gods and souls are closely tied to madness, souls themselves must arise from the gods.

           If love is madness to an extent, then from what Socrates lays out here, love must be in some sense or another derived from the gods themselves. As such love is also intrinsic to soul, which makes sense as it is the essential driving force for the propagation of life itself. I’ll be honest, I got quite lost at times on this one. Yet I agree again with kirakiraposts in that Socrates dialogue is really quite intriguing. It’s almost an epic in its own sense, as we start with a discourse between him and Phaedrus that evolves into this tale of the divine. If there was any doubt of Socrates rhetorical skills before, there certainly is none now. He does all of this just to solidify his argument of love as a truly intrinsic characteristic of human. Keeping this in mind, it brings us to wonder what is thus the relationship between love and virtue.
