001. how long ago did you start reading fanfiction? writing fanfiction? oh man. i’m not sure exactly but my memory is that i started reading fanfic in 8th grade when i was 13 and living in south florida. and i started writing my own fanfic that summer (2005) that i turned 14. sooo...i’ve been reading and writing fanfic for 15+ years??? oh damn.
007. do you prefer to read short fics or long fics? LONG FICS!! literally the first thing i do when i discover a new fandom or ship is to search through ao3 by word count. i just really love to settle in and read something long (and i’m talking...crazy long. i have read fics that are over 1,000,000 words before and i fucking love it).
011. how do you come up with your fic titles? oh basically all of my fic titles are from songs. so show me (family) is from the song ho hey by the lumineers. take my hand (take my everything) is from slip away by perfume genius. taste my beating heart is from howl by florence +the machine. some of my older fic titles are just grabbed from the body of the story.
the only interesting story is from: hands split and bless on curving man. that title comes from this outdoor book festival i stumbled across in london? and they had this archway that you could walk through and people were taping together pieces of paper with different words on them and hanging the chains from the ceiling of the archway. which meant that when you walked through it you were literally walking through poetry. “hands split and bless on curving man” was the poem i strung together and hung, and then eventually i used it for a supernatural fic framed around the winchester family and their hands.
032. copy and paste your top three favorite lines/jokes/sentences you’ve ever written. what fics do they come from?
But now, the apartment dark as the sun has set outside, the only noise the sound of Chris’ movie filtering up into the loft, Eddie feels like he’s intruding on something. Like he shouldn’t be here, in this moment, in this space, where Buck is at his most vulnerable.  —so show me (family)
[Claudia] died the same way Stiles was born. Swaddled in hospital blankets, in the arms of the two people who loved her most in the world. —a little better
[Mary]’s never there. Hasn’t been since Dean’s world went up in flames and his sense of self disappeared into the night sky to be replaced with the baby in his arms.  —gentle caress
034. how much of yourself and your life experiences do you put into your writing? what do you think your readers’ image of you is? sometimes it depends. in my most recent fic so show me (family) i put A LOT of my own experiences into the story. specifically most of buck’s injuries and childhood experiences (check: i’ve fallen down a flight of stairs multiple times, once drunkenly at a party trying to lean against a wall that wasn’t there and once stone cold sober carrying a vacuum cleaner that resulted in a broken face. in high school my friends and i got caught drinking in the woods on private property and escaped the cops by running into the trees. i broke my elbow as a kid and (unlike buck) i told my parents immediately but we waited a night before taking me to a hospital. and i chose to start going by my nickname in 9th grade and didn’t give my parents a heads up before they went to a back to school event).
in taste your beating heart there’s a throwaway line about how stiles “brought home a dead raccoon when he was six and asked if he could keep it” which is kIND OF GNARLY but based on a story of me when i was 5 petting a dead opposum in our backyard because i thought it was a sleeping dog and asked my dad if it could be our pet. SO.
i’m sure there’s more out there but those are the examples that stick out in my head right now.
039. what’s something about your writing that you pride yourself on? i think i’ve got an ear for dialogue. growing up i always liked to kind of daydream fake conversations between me and my crushes or celebrities i liked or whoever. and i donno, i just feel like over time i’ve gotten to know the rhythm of conversations and such? sometimes i’ll read fics and the conversation can feel stilted or overly written and i’m sure my dialogue isn’t perfect but it’s something i don’t have a hard time with. sometimes when i’m writing a scene the dialogue will come to me so fast i’ll end up just writing down all the dialogue in a rush and then go back and fill the prose in later. (that’s what happened with the eddie+maddie scene in take my hand (take my everything)).

A Perfectionist Living in the Real World
Hello Beautiful,
I am a perfectionist, and I admit to that fact. I worry about silly little things (meaning every little thing). I analyze every conversation. I work myself to the bone. I will review, review, and review. I will a hundredth time check something before sending it or turning it in. I attempt to perfect everything I do. It is not so much in the moment that I am worried what others…

IBM's Food Blockchain Is Going Live With a Supermarket Giant on Board
This post was originally published here
IBM is taking its food-tracking blockchain into production, making it one of the largest enterprise projects to achieve that milestone, and has signed European supermarket giant Carrefour to use it.
Announced Monday, the commercial launch of IBM Food Trust means that large players, as well as small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs) in the food industry supply chain, can now join the network for a subscription fee ranging from $100 to $10,000 a month.
And many SMEs may have a stronger incentive to participate to participate now that Carrefour, which operates 12,000 stores in 33 countries, is on board. The retailer will track and trace its own branded products in France, Spain and Brazil, before expanding to other countries by 2022.
“For us, it’s a matter of sense for the consumer,” Emmanuel Delerm, blockchain program director at Carrefourm told CoinDesk. “It’s really this that will push us to say to our producers or partners or suppliers, will they come on the platform? It’s really consumer-orientated; it’s really for them that we are doing this.”
Yet Carrefour is only the latest food company with supply chain clout to sign up for IBM Food Trust. Others include Nestle, Dole Food, Tyson Foods, Kroger, Unilever – and not least of all the U.S. big-box behemoth Walmart. Notably, Walmart has already flexed its muscle, telling leafy-greens suppliers last month that they must integrate with the network by September 2019 and citing an e.coli outbreak as an urgent reason to improve transparency.
Describing the fruits of more than a year’s work, Ramesh Gopinath, IBM’s vice president of blockchain solutions, told CoinDesk,
“IBM Food Trust is the first production blockchain at real scale and we are super-excited to finally be making the product available broadly.”
Indeed, the one other enterprise blockchain of comparable heft to go live is we.trade, the trade finance consortium of 12 global banks, which entered production in late June.
The mainstay of the IBM Food Trust commercial offering, explained Gopinath, is the ability to trace items backward and forward through the supply chain. This means the apples in a brand of baby food, for example, can be pinpointed back to a particular batch and orchard; then, in the event of, say, contamination, the trace can go forward to recall the whole range of products that might be affected.
“That obviously requires the growers, the suppliers, and the retailers all to be part of the solution, sending in information in a trusted and permissioned fashion and we link it all together,” said Gopinath.
So far, 3 million transactions have been processed on the ledger during 18 months of testing, and now that it’s gone live, Gopinath is confident that “if anything it will be ten times faster.”
Top of the food chain?
IBM Food Trust is without doubt leading the track-and-trace food space. The network was built using the Hyperledger Fabric blockchain protocol (which Big Blue contributed to the Hyperledger project). But there will likely be others in the race, including some which may also emerge from within the Hyperledger commmunity.
Also gathering momentum is Sawtooth, the codebase donated to Hyperledger by Intel. Indeed, if you take the time to inspect the Sawtooth Supply Chain GitHub repository, in July of this year there were 15 code commits from U.S. food giant Cargill, involving some kind of track and trace project; the word “fish” is mentioned. Asked if a proof of concept was forthcoming on Sawtooth, Cargill declined to comment.
But in any case, IBM’s Gopinath was sanguine about other Fortune 100 companies working on possible solutions, adding that interoperability is an ultimate goal.
“All of that, in my view, is good news,” he said. “It’s affirmation that path we started on three plus years ago is the right one. And back when we started out, we have always had interoperability in mind.”
He also pointed to data sharing standards like GS1 which means the necessary work will be done up front. Gopinath added,
“I’d love it if IBM Food Trust was the only platform out there for this, but we are not that naive. If there’s another one that is as good and as mature as Food Trust out there then absolutely we will be happy to do the interop.”
Chicken and egg
Carrefour’s Delerm said the supermarket chain worked on its own blockchain for more than a year, mainly using internal engineer teams, before switching to IBM’s.
“Being a retailer we knew that IBM was working with Walmart on IBM Food Trust in the U.S. primarily,” he said.
As such, Carrefour saw scope to widen the range of products it was already working on, such as the way it currently verifies production of free-range chicken in the Auvergne region in central France.
“As of today, we have three products in France that since the start of the year we have been delivering to consumers all the information: tomatoes, chicken and eggs, and we added recently the chicken also in Italy,” Delerm.
In addition to the existing Carrefour Quality Lines live on the blockchain, the plan is to use IBM Food Trust to include international brands, said Delerm, such as some of those already working with Food Trust like Nestle and Unilever, as well as exploring organic produce-tracking.
Growing adoption
Also joining Food Trust on Monday are the cooperative Topco Associates representing 15,000 stores; retailer-owned cooperative Wakefern, representing 50 member companies and 344 stores; as well as suppliers including Beefchain, Dennick Fruit Source and Smithfield.
Food Trust can also be accessed by way of a module that simply allows firms to upload data about goods to the system, done via the cloud or another app, and which is free of charge. A more advanced version of this involves certificates, organic or Fair Trade credentials and so on.
Stepping back, Food Trust is one of IBM’s main blockchain buckets; another is shipping and global trade, and in this area, the flagship platform is IBM’s collaboration with Maersk, dubbed TradeLens.
So far, TradeLens is yet to onboard any other carriers that are anything like the size of Maersk. So, could it be that the food industry is an easier ride in terms of adoption, or perhaps it’s an area where the benefits are more immediately tangible?
Gopinath pointed that Food Trust has been some 18 months in the making, and that progress is being made on TradeLens to scale up to the same degree among parties that normally compete with each other.
He concluded:
“IBM Food Trust is making this big announcement; similarly, TradeLens will also have a commercial availability announcement. And at that point, I can guarantee you it will be in the same shape we are in here.”

For one, your nipples are super-sensitive (they're a top erogenous zone, after all)-but there's pain that feels good and pain that, well, feels like pain.
There are two words that, when said together, can make any woman immediately cringe with discomfort: nipple pain. (You totally did it just now, didn't you?)
For one, your nipples are super-sensitive (they're a top erogenous zone, after all)-but there's pain that feels good and pain that, well, feels like pain.
So, uh, WTF is going on when your nips actually hurt-and is it something to worry about?
First: Don't freak out; there are various lifestyle and health changes that could lead to nipple pain, and most can easily be resolved once you figure out the culprit (i.e. throw away that ill-fitting sports bra forever), but others may come with more alarming symptoms (like nipple discharge, lumps, or changes in the color or texture of your breast skin) that are definitely a sign to see a doctor.
Whatever the case, irritated, painful nipples aren’t something you should have to deal with on the regular. If your nips are feeling super uncomfortable, make an appointment with your ob-gyn-one of these issues might be at the root.
1. You have an infection in your nipples.
Yep, your nipples can get infected: “There are large pores and hair follicles around the nipple that can become clogged and infected just like in your underarm or pubic areas,” says Jenna Sassie, M.D., an obstetrician-gynecologist at Women’s Healthcare Associates in Houston.
One possible type of infection, believe it or not, is a yeast infection on your nipple (yes, those yeast infections). These usually occur under the breast where sweat collects, says Sassie, but since yeast thrives in moist, dark environments, women who regularly wear bras made of non-breathable material might be prone to yeast infections on their nipples too.
Invest in anti-chafing balm such as Body Glide to reduce nipple irritation while running.
Thrush is another type of yeast infection that's passed on to breastfeeding mothers from their babies. Luckily, these infections can be treated with antibiotics-for you, and if you're breastfeeding, for your baby too.
Nipple piercing can also lead to infection, especially if it’s not done with good technique or cared for meticulously afterwards, says Alyssa Dweck, M.D., a gynecologist in Westchester, New York, and assistant clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. So if you’re considering accessorizing your girls, do your research and find a reputable tattoo and piercing parlor.
2. You have 'jogger’s nipple.'
If you work out regularly or are training for a long endurance event like a marathon, experiencing chafing or irritation from clothing such as a sports bra isn’t that uncommon-TBH, it’s almost a rite of passage.
Dweck advises wearing a well-fitting, good-quality sports bra and using an anti-chafing balm such as Body Glide to prevent irritation.
But you don't have to be a runner to get "jogger's nipple"-it can happen in everyday clothes too. “I’ve also had patients wearing poor-fitting lace bras and such who wind up with rashes or sensitivity because it’s rubbing the nipple all day long,” Sassie says.
If that's the case, it might be worth going through your intimates drawer to figure out if it’s really worth keeping some of those pretty, yet too itchy, bras around.
3. You’re experiencing hormonal changes.
One of the first things you want to consider when you first experience breast pain is whether or not you might be pregnant.
“Nipple pain is sometimes the first sign that you are expecting,” says Sassie.
So if you’re not on birth control and are not experiencing any signs of nipple irritation, you wouldn’t be crazy for rushing out to buy a pregnancy test.
Similarly, if you stopped or started a new birth control method or pill, are about to start your period, or are experiencing any major hormonal fluctuations such as perimenopause, you may experience breast and nipple pain as well, says Sassie; which, while a literal pain, is usually nothing to worry about.
4. You’re breastfeeding
A very unfortunate truth: Experiencing pain while breastfeeding is mostly normal, for a number of reasons: your breast pump doesn't fit well, you have clogged milk ducts, your nipples are cracked, or your baby has latching issues. Nipple creams like Medela Tender Care Lanolin can often help new moms get some relief in those cases.
Mastitis can also cause flu-like symptoms, like fever, aches, and fatigue.
But sometimes pain during breastfeeding isn't normal-like with mastitis, (a.k.a. inflammation of breast tissue). According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, symptoms of mastitis include breast tenderness or warmth to the touch, breast swelling, thickening of breast tissue or a breast lump; pain or a burning sensation while breastfeeding or during normal daily activities; and skin redness.
“If you are experiencing pain while breastfeeding and also have a fever or chills or you are generally feeling ill, definitely visit your doctor,” Sassie says.
5. You’re having an allergic reaction.
If you’re experiencing itchiness or irritation after using a new fragrance, soap, or lotion, or even laundry detergent or fabric softener, your newfound nipple pain might be the result of an allergic reaction.
If you have made a recent switch-and identified that as the source of your pain-you might be better off going back to your old favorite, or seeking out a fragrance-free or hypoallergenic version.
6. You started or changed a medication.
“Some medications can have side effects that cause nipple sensitivity or even discharge from the nipple,” says Sassie “These can be herbal supplements or prescriptions, especially psychiatric drugs.” Check with your doctor if you think that's the case.
Additionally, if you have already been diagnosed with breast cancer, treatment such as surgery and radiation can cause breast pain as well, says Dweck.

Pregnancy Must-Have: Snooze More Soundly the Next Nine Months
Sleep. Dormir. Siesta. No matter the language, that simple word is music to an expectant mother’s ears. Yet, despite good-natured advice to “sleep as much as possible before the baby comes” those zzz’s are often difficult to achieve. The post Pregnancy Must-Have: Snooze More Soundly the Next Nine Months appeared first on Doctor's Complete.

Sex & Relationships: 'I used to love getting naked — And then I got pregnant'
These were the words of encouragement (okay, commands) I gave to my significant partner before our first time having sex in the three months since I'd given birth to our daughter.
“Don’t touch me too much. And don’t go too fast,” I said. “And don’t be mad if I don’t look like I’m having that much fun.”
These were the words of encouragement (okay, commands) I gave to my significant partner before our first time having sex in the three months since I'd given birth to our daughter. Talk about a pre-sex buzzkill, right?
In response, my ever-supportive partner remained calm. “It feels the same,” he said as soon as he was inside me.
He’s right, I thought. Then, No he’s not!!! He can’t be!!!
Physically, my doctor had reassured me that I was fit for sex, but psychologically I was a wreck. I was terrified that things would be permanently different ~down there~ or that I wouldn't be able to experience pleasure like before.
Most of all, I was extremely aware of the extra pounds I was still carrying on my hips, thighs, and butt. I didn't want anyone, even my loving, sweet partner, to accidentally graze my mushy tummy or my engorged breasts.
The brutal truth: Twelve weeks after pushing a tiny human out of my vagina, I still didn't feel quite like myself.
'I thought I'd love being pregnant. I was wrong.'
When I first found out that I was pregnant, I assumed I’d be one of those women who lovesbeing pregnant. I imagined pulling a Demi Moore and posing naked for my partner every few weeks or so, clutching my belly with one arm and hugging my breasts with the other so he could capture every glorious stage of my natural transformation.
After all, I had always been super confident about my body. Sure, I had my insecurities like any other human woman, but for the most part I was comfortable and happy with my willowy figure. In my twenties, I had been the person who'd take their clothes off first during hookups, or would be the one to suggest late night skinny-dipping.
But as soon as I started to gain weight during the first trimester, every uptick in the number on the scale unnerved me. Rather than celebrating the “miracle of life,” I found myself lamenting every bit of bulge that appeared on my butt, breasts, and belly. Even my upper arms seemed thicker. I felt wider everywhere-from ankles to neck-maybe because I was imagining it, or maybe because I was retaining that much water. My naked body looked foreign and unfamiliar.
'I couldn't see myself the same way others did.'
Throughout, my partner was reassuring. “Do you realize how hot you are?” he’d say whenever he caught me naked. He looked at me longingly like he always had, and seemed genuinely turned on by my expanding form (especially my plumped-up chest and ass). Strangers were kind as well, often going out of their way to note how I “carried well,” or appeared to be “glowing.”
Still, I couldn’t see myself the way they did. By the second trimester, I dreaded getting dressed each morning because nothing seemed to fit. I sometimes recoiled from my S.O.'s touch. I avoided mirrors. Try as I might, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I’d lost something-that I was no longer as attractive because of how my body had changed.
'I wasn't used to hating how I looked-and I didn't like that feeling.'
Obviously, weight gain is normal (and necessary) during pregnancy. But I couldn't get my brain to accept that. I obsessively looked up info online about the dangers of gestational weight gain to a mother's and a baby's health-hypertension, gestational diabetes, delivery complications. Even after testing negative for gestational diabetes, I worried about every additional pound.
I’d be lying if I said I was mainly concerned about health risks. Mostly, I just hated the way I looked-and I wasn’t used to feeling that way about my body.
I tried to figure out what "normal" was, and sent frantic texts to friends asking them how much weight they’d gained during pregnancy. But the responses didn't help me much in my panic. One friend reported gaining 40 pounds during her first pregnancy, but only 17 during her second. Another friend gained 32 pounds by week 24, but barely gained in the weeks thereafter. Yet another gained 65 pounds, but lost it all somehow within two months postpartum.
The information I gathered confirmed one thing: That every body, and every pregnancy, is different.
'Do something about your f*cked up attitude.'
One morning, 30 weeks into my pregnancy, I found myself standing in front of a full-length mirror, scrutinizing every inch of my third trimester figure. The reflection I saw in the mirror looked nothing like that person I was, the person who used to be so eager to get naked.
In that moment, what I loathed even more than the sight of my body was the self-conscious woman staring back at me. You are about to be the mother of a daughter, I reminded myself. If you want her to have a healthy body image, you’re going to have to do something about your own f*cked-up attitude. You’re going to have to rewire your brain, because thinness should not equal confidence.
That morning, I pledged to be kinder to myself. I wanted to be a mom who accepted herself at any weight. Who felt good about herself for reasons that had nothing to do with her appearance. Who would not be a hypocrite when she told her daughter to love herself for her heart, her mind, and her character.
I hid the household scale in the back of a closet and forced myself to compliment my own reflection. “You are smart,” I told myself. “Stop being so hard on yourself.” During sex, I tried my best to shelve every toxic thought that popped into my head. Slowly but surely, I re-learned how to enjoy myself in bed.
And slowly but surely, it helped. By the time my due date arrived, I was sending my partner hilarious nude selfies so we could marvel together at my metamorphosis. I had to admit: The female body is truly capable of magnificent things.
'I want to be an example for my daughter.'
Of course, developing an authentic sense of body confidence is an ongoing process. After giving birth, I faced a new set of hurdles that impacted my sense of self. I became preoccupied by how long it would take to shed the baby weight, and how weird sex would feel after the vaginal trauma that is pushing a pumpkin-sized baby out of a canal more suited to cucumbers.
It's a process-and it's something I'm still dealing with (in case you couldn't tell by the first-time post-baby sex story). The difference is that now my daughter is here with me, in the outside world. Every time I hold her in my arms, I’m reminded of just how important it is to lead by example.
If I want my daughter to be comfortable in her skin, I have to keep working toward being comfortable in mine. I have to keep being kind to myself, reminding myself that I am more than my weight or my body shape. I have to learn to feel like myself, no matter what the scale says.
I'm doing it for both of us.
