Hey THG fans thanks to somone else on here (I'm so sorry but I can't remember the name of your blog) I've kind of become obsessed with making book accurate (or as close as I could get) picrews of The Hunger Games characters & now that I'm mostly done with our fravriote star crossed lovers I wanted to show you all. This is my interpretation of what Katniss looked like as a young child.

suzanne collins : “so in the epilogue of mockingjay, katniss only refers to her children as the girl and the boy-”
people who read with one eye shut : “BECAUSE SHE DOESN’T LOVE HER KIDS AND WAS FORCED INTO HAVING THEM BY THE EVIL PEETA MELLARK?”
suzanne collins probably : “because i couldn’t decide on two names i liked.”

So I just reread The Hunger Games trilogy
And just think about the first time Katniss notices that she has just a little bit of pudge on her belly or on her thighs
What that would feel like. To be food insecure your entire childhood, then go through not one but two starvation-level acute stressors, and then a war with rationed food, and all the while you’re consumed with eating as much as you possibly can while also being hyper aware of needing to feed your sister first. And most everything you eat is just not very good, but when it is good it’s because it’s Capitol food and so soaked with blood that you can’t enjoy it
And then at the end of it all, there’s peace to rebuild and a home to rebuild and a mind to rebuild and a heart to hand over to the only good person you know
And then he feeds you bread, and cheese buns, and pastries, and beautiful cakes, and he gets a little soft belly, too
And you can lay down together at the end of the day, and be soft together
Secure in knowing that you have plenty of food, and you aren’t dependent on the weather or the mood of the police or the season or politics happening thousands of miles away
All I’m saying is that Katniss would find Peeta’s dadbod so super hot and comforting and, like, be proud of it. To know that even when a bad day comes around, they have the safety and security of being well-fed, and that their kids will never know what it’s like to worry about their sibling starving, or know that they’re only good enough for day-old bread.

My favorite thing about writing Peeta as a father is the difficulty of breaking the cycle of abuse.
When you are not loved, you do not know how to love. Love and care are taught. Many things that Peeta thought were normal were abuse. I think Peeta is constantly aware when he is repeating the mistakes his parents made. When he raises his voice, when he seems irritated for a small reason, but other things are more difficult to see.
Peeta learned to tie his shoes alone.
He learned to take care of himself. His mother used to say that's what makes a man strong. There were no gentle hands to comb his hair or goodnight kisses to help him fall asleep. He learned to control his tears, swallow his feelings, and keep quiet.
And a lot of times, his first instinct is to tell his kids to do it alone.
But Katniss always arrives first.
Willow knows how to braid her own hair, actually very well. But there's nothing like Katniss' hands stroking her hair and running a comb very gently over her scalp. Rye knows how to peel an orange, but prefers to watch his mother peel it with a knife, because Katniss knows how to make a perfect spiral without breaking the peel.
It's love.
So Peeta stops asking why when the boy asks him to tie his shoes. It's satisfying to hear Rye proudly saying "Daddy, my shoelaces look like two rabbit ears."

i know some ppl can see katniss as the strict parent, but it has never came into my mind. have you seen how easy she can be w prim? have you seen peeta in cf? strict personal trainer extraordinaire ??!! katniss would look right into her kid’s face- connect something w peeta like her daughters blue eyes or her sons face and would go ‘okay-just don’t tell your father this- please. i don’t want you in trouble my little ducks’ ! allowing them to get away w it. not to say peeta wouldn’t be a fantastic parent- he would just be the more strict on w rule and routine

I always wondered why Katniss factored marriage and children into the equation when it came to reciprocating Peeta’s feelings for her. It’s a rather large leap, especially when Peeta himself never expresses wanting children at any point in the story. He uses children as a tool to persuade Katniss and the Capital to save her life, but the only time we see him express any desire/feelings of having one of his own is when he’s crying after the baby bomb. But we never hear his real thoughts.
But you wanna know who does express wanting children? Gale.
Tumblr media
It’s one of the first thing he mentions in chapter one. And it pisses her off so much.
(I also want to add that Gale reframes/establishes the dynamic of Katniss and him caring for their siblings from something that is sibling-sibling to parent-sibling. And he is not wrong. Katniss doesn’t refute him. Both Katniss and Gale are surrogate parents to their siblings. Which is also why Katniss love and affection of Prim, is not just sisterly. I’ve seen people say Katniss is only sisterly to Prim- but she’s not. She’s parentified their relationship to the point she subconsciously see Prim as her child, which makes this a tragedy because she’ll loose her first child no matter what she does by the end of the story.)
But Gale’s phrasing here elevates himself as a potential suitor to Katniss by placing them both as the parental roles to these children. (Which irritates her a lot ). Which is why she brings the topic up with her relationship with Peeta. Because she’s subconsciously aware of Gale’s efforts and knows it will be a point of contention between them. It hangs over her head in a way.
With Gale, children are extra mouths to feed. (But Gale will do fine. He can work. He can hunt.) It’s all framed with calculated survival in mind. But it’s also not something she had planned in the future at any point.
Tumblr media
But Peeta’s children? Oh they deserve to be born because Peeta deserves to be a father. He would be such a good father. They deserve to exist in a world where they can be safe and happy. (Even if it’s not with her.)
Tumblr media
This is also why I think she subconsciously sees Peeta’s baby as her own. And I don’t think of it as a cruel/heartless thing, it’s just you’d be more protective of your own child compared to someone else’s. Katniss sees Gale as a reliable person who’s equipped to look after a kid. She doesn’t express the same kind of maternal instinct/yearning for the Baby Hawthrone’s safety as she does with the idea of Baby Mellark, because she doesn’t think of Gale’s child as her own. She never hopes for a better future for them, but she does with Peeta because he and that baby gives her hope. And she loves him that much.

Katniss post-Mockingjay grips onto anything living with both hands. She cultivates a garden sprawled across several of the Victors' Village yards so that she and her loved ones never have to go hungry again full of herbs, greens, vegetables, and all sorts of flowers for Peeta.
(Not roses. Never roses. The primroses are the only roses allowed. She spots some, once, and uproots them to give to some transplant from another district. Even these plants she cannot kill.)
In the sterile, sparse courtyard of the Village, she plants an orchard of fruit and nut trees. Peeta jokes that it is her second forest. She responds by shooting a rabbit for dinner from their bedroom window.
(Hunting is different. It is a necessary kind of killing in the aftermath of a war that leaves resources sparse during rebuilding. Katniss is a good hunter. She knows that if she is responsible, there will be enough game to continue on through the years. She tries not to think about how the Capitol treated the districts the same way.)
She gets two chickens. Then, a few more. Soon, a tiny army follows her whenever she enters the yard. They love Peeta especially, thanks to the baking scraps he slips them when he thinks Katniss isn't looking. Haymitch guffaws from his porch, watching Katniss with her parade of teeny chicks peeping after her.
(He shuts up a little after she gives him his first few geese.)
Gradually, some goats, a cow or two, and a handful of sheep join the menagerie. Peeta comes home with a fragile little puppy he finds going through the bakery's garbage for scraps that Katniss refuses to love until she's sure he will live, nursing the puppy to health all the same. Turns out, he's excellent at herding and protecting the animals, and that ugly little mutt becomes the most fierce protector of his pack.
(The goats are the hardest of all to agree to adopt. Every time she looks at them, she sees Prim's goat with its blue ribbon. The first bite of goat cheese makes her choke.)
And then, when one day, she looks around her, and she finds a thriving, noisy, life-giving patch of Eden where the Capitol's perfectly manicured, ornamental, plastic hell once stood, and she breathes in the clean mountain air and digs her hands into rich, good earth, she thinks about Peeta. She thinks about how he makes bread like the loaves he threw her, but now the dried fruits and nuts come from trees and plants she grows. She thinks about how they got tipsy on dandelion wine on their most recent anniversary, and neither of them thought about mutts, or Snow, or Prim that day. She thinks about every good thing she's ever seen and how she sees more and more every year, and she thinks about how maybe, maybe now it's safe enough to bring another kind of new life into the world.
(And maybe she names her first baby girl Eden. Maybe with that baby, the world starts anew.)

i fully believe that after the war, peeta loved katniss even more then he did before.
like, this man was trained to KILL katniss, yet he still fell back in love.
his original love towards katniss was first, and unconditional love. he saw her as beautiful no matter what and failed to see a lot of her flaws. however, when he gets hijacked, her flaws are ALL he notices about her. the line "you're not very big, are you? or particularly pretty?" makes it clear that the old peeta is gone (or is he??🤨) and he is noticing for the first time that katniss is completely average looking. but while the book progresses, so does peetas feelings for katniss (obviously.) this is most apparent when he blocks her from killing herself. why did he do that?? he didnt have to. he owed her nothing.
but he couldn't. and whether he knew it or not, he couldn't live without her. he was still trying to protect her.
the very end of the book is when we see the most love come from peeta (and again, obviously.) whether it is the fact that he came back to 12, or that he planted primroses for prim, he loves her. platonically and romantically. and i think that after all they have been through, it is just beautiful. and eventually seeing that he feels comfortable enough to sleep with her again, after he was hijacked to try to kill her every chance he got, it shows that he trusts himself a lot more around her.
finally the ending "you love me? real or not real?" "real." confirms that not only did he love katniss, but she loved him too.
anyways thanks for coming to my tedtalk!
