These sorts of roundups always get me. My wife will flip through Zillow photos of the insides of homes for hours because she likes seeing how different people decorate, Feng Shui, or what have you. That’s her little dip into Voyeur-Land. Mine? It could easily be scrolling through CSS snippets that devs keep within arm’s reach.

Alvaro was kind enough to share the trustiest of his trusty CSS:

Limit the content width within the viewport

Increase the body text size

Increase the line between rows of text

Limit the width of images

Limit the width of text within the content

Wrap headings in a more balanced way

Form control colors to match page styles

Easy-to-follow table rows

Spacing in table cells and headings

Reduce animations and movement

Not dropping the snippets in here (it’s worth reading the full post for that). But I do have a couple of my own that I’d tack on. And like Alvaro says up-front about his list, not all of these will be 100% applicable to every project.

Global border-box sizing

No explanation needed here. It’s often the very first thing declared in any given stylesheet on the web.

I’m guessing Alvaro uses this, too, and maybe it’s too obvious to list. Or maybe it’s more of a DX enhancement that belongs in a reset more than it is something that improves the website.

System fonts

Default text on the web is just so… so… so blah. I love that Alvaro agrees that 16px is way too small to be the web’s default font-size for text. I would take that one step further and wipe out the Times New Roman default font as well. I’m sure there are sites out there leveraging it (I did on my own personal site for years as an act of brutal minimalism), but a personal preference these days is defaulting to whatever the OS default font is.

body font-family: system-ui;

We can be a little more opinionated than that by falling back to either a default serif or sans-serif font.

There are much, much more robust approaches for sure, but this baseline is a nice starting point for just about any site.

Cut horizontal overflow from the <body>

Oh gosh, I never ever make this mistake. 😝

But hypothetically, if I did — and that’s a BIG if — I like preventing it from messing with a visitor’s scrolling experience. Once the <body>‘s intrinsic width is forced outside the viewport, we get horizontal scrolling that might be a very cool thing if it’s intentional but is not-so-bueno when it’s not.

body overflow-x: hidden;

I’ll use this as a defensive mechanism but would never want to rely on it as an actual solution to the possible loss of data that comes with overflowing content. This merely masks the problem while allowing an opportunity to fix the root cause without visitors having to deal with the rendered consequences.

Give the <body> some breathing room

Not too much, not too little, but the baby bear porridge just the right amount of space to keep content from hugging right up to the edges.

How Concerned Citizens Drove a Neo-Nazi Out of Rural Maine

Christopher Pohlhaus planned to build a fascist training compound in the woods of rural Maine. The local journalists, veterans, lumberjacks, and policymakers weren't having it.

Pohlhaus, 37, is a former U.S. marine, an itinerant tattoo artist, and a hardcore white-supremacist influencer. He is loud and hostile, and proud to be both. His voice is pitched surprisingly high, and he has a slight Southern drawl. He has a large body and small bald head; a blue-black tattoo crawls up the right side of his face, from his chin to his forehead. Over the years, Pohlhaus has collected thousands of social media followers, who know him by his nickname: Hammer.

Hammer had been living in Texas for a few years when, in March 2022, he bought the land in Maine. He told his followers that he was going to use it to build a haven, operational center, and training ground for white supremacists.

Since there's a resurgence of readership of my Villy fanfic (V.A. Vandevere x Milly Farrier age 18 = Villy) Baby, Mine, I decided to reblog this.

I did hear from a friend who works media in L.A. that Michael Keaton had read something I wrote for him about V.A. moving like a snake. ( I can't give more detail because I'm anonymous). He loved it so much he brightened up during the press conference with the Dumbo cast that was filmed immediately after he read it. In the interview, Keaton said he wanted to be "the snake. Not the snake handler, but the snake." Everyone was confused and his comment fell flat, but I knew he was referring to what I'd written. :-)

I was cleaning out my folders and found art I did of Dumbo 2019 and Villy. I got into the fandom 3 years ago this month, before the movie even opened!

I was on Twitter in 2019. I did cartoons of the characters reading for First Book’s Magical Adventure Sweepstakes (promo narrated by Michael Keaton). First Book promoted these, and I received a nice note from actor Frank Bourke, asking if he could use the Puck cartoon as his avatar. Of course I said yes, I was honored! He used it on Twitter and Instagram.

I never did get around to doing a cartoon of Holt, I don’t know why.

Soon after I deleted my Twitter account, so all those posts are gone.

I didn’t have a scanner at the time, so all the photos were taken with a clunky old digital camera.

A Dumbo cast members told me both Keaton and DeVito loved it, but I can’t confirm that (I don’t believe it).

After reading bad reviews of Michael Keaton’s accent as VAV, I tweeted these. A friend who’s an actor in L.A. urged me to send the art to Keaton’s rep agency. For the hell of it, I did. No idea if his rep’s office ever received them, of if he ever saw them. Considering he must get bags of fan mail, I doubt very much he’s seen them. Just as well; I drew the art fast, and it’s not my best work.

Study on Extremely Preterm Infants Provides Important Healthcare Knowledge - Technology Org

Infants born extremely prematurely need to get enrichment as an addition to breast milk. But does it make any difference whether the enrichment is made from breast milk or cow’s milk when it comes to the risk of severe complications in children? This has been investigated by a large clinical study led from Linköping

Infants born extremely prematurely, between weeks 22 and 27 of pregnancy, are among the most vulnerable patients in healthcare. The risk of serious complications is very high. Almost one in four extremely premature babies die before the age of one.

There is strong research support for giving breast milk to these children rather than formula made from cow’s milk. It is known that cow’s milk-based formula increases their risk of getting, for example, severe intestinal inflammation and sepsis (severe blood-born infection).

“In Sweden, all extremely preterm infants receive breast milk from their mother or donated breast milk. Despite this, almost one in ten children get a severe inflammation of the intestine called necrotising enterocolitis. It’s one of the worst diseases you can have. At least three out of ten children die and those who survive often have neurological problems afterwards,” says Thomas Abrahamsson, professor at Linköping University and senior physician at the neonatal department at the University Hospital in Linköping, who led the current study.

Unusual study

Historically, there have been very few studies on extremely preterm infants where treatments have been compared against each other. Therefore, there is a great need for clinical studies that can provide scientific support for how these children should be treated to have better chances of survival and a good life.

In some countries, such as Sweden, infants are fed exclusively with either their mother’s breast milk or donated breast milk. However, in order for extremely preterm infants to grow as well as possible, they need more nutrition than breast milk contains. This is why breast milk is supplemented with extra protein, so-called enrichment.

The enrichment has previously been made from cow’s milk. But there have been suspicions that cow’s milk-based enrichment increases the risk of severe complications. Today, there is enrichment that is based on donated breast milk, and which has begun to be used in healthcare in some places. The big question is whether it can reduce the risk of diseases in extremely preterm infants.

Eagerly awaited results

The current study, called N-Forte (the Nordic study on human milk fortification in extremely preterm infants), is the largest that has been carried out to seek answers to this question. The results have been eagerly awaited by paediatricians and others caring for these fragile infants.

“We concluded that it doesn’t matter whether extremely preterm infants get enrichment made from cow’s milk or made from donated breast milk,” says Thomas Abrahamsson.

Although the study indicates that there was no difference between the two options, its results can be useful. The breast milk-based product is estimated to cost more than SEK 100,000 per child, which would be equivalent to around SEK 40 million if the product were to be used in Swedish healthcare.

“On the one hand, we’re disappointed that we didn’t find a positive effect of enrichment based on breast milk. On the other hand, it’s a large and well-done study and we can now say with great certainty that it doesn’t have an effect in this patient group. This is also important knowledge, so that we don’t invest in expensive products that don’t have the desired effect,” says Thomas Abrahamsson.

The N-Forte study included 228 extremely preterm infants, randomly divided into two equally-sized groups that received enrichment made from breast milk and cow’s milk respectively. The researchers examined whether the two groups differed in the incidence of necrotising enterocolitis, sepsis and death. Of the children treated with breast milk-based enrichment, 35.7% had these complications, while the corresponding proportion was 34.5% in the group receiving cow’s milk-based enrichment, which means that there was no difference between the groups.

The results of the study are in line with a smaller study from Canada published in 2018. In that study, the researchers also did not see any difference between the two types of enrichment on necrotising enterocolitis and severe sepsis.

The study was conducted at 24 neonatal departments in Sweden, with financial support from the Swedish Research Council, the Swedish Research Council in Southeast Sweden (FORSS), ALF funds and the company Prolacta Bioscience.
