"Ye kya jagah hai dosto, ye kaun sa dayaar hai
Had-e-nigaah tak jahaan, gubaar hi gubaar hai"
Remembering Khayyam, the great composer of serene and sublime melodies, on his 4th death anniversary (19/08/19). Celebrating the musical journey of Khayyam, the maestro who left an indelible mark on Indian cinema. From his early days in Lahore, mentored by Baba Chishti, to his iconic contributions in Bollywood, his journey is awe-inspiring. Films like 'Heer Ranjha', 'Biwi', 'Shola Aur Shabnam', and 'Aakhri Khat' showcased his genius early on. His collaboration with poets, especially Sahir Ludhianvi, gave us masterpieces in 'Kabhi Kabhie' and 'Phir Subha Hogi'.
The 1981 classic 'Umrao Jaan' stands as a testament to his brilliance, with songs like "In Aankhon Ki Masti Ke" becoming evergreen hits. His work in 'Razia Sultan', especially "Aye Dil-e-Nadan", is considered a milestone. Khayyam's music, a blend of ghazals and Indian classical, was always rich in poetry and emotion. Remembering Hamza Baba
Amir Hamza Shinwari, or Hamza Baba as he is known, was born in December 1907, in the house of Malik Baz Mir Khan — the chief of the Ashraf Khel tribe of Shinwari Pashtuns.
During his early days, Hamza worked in the railways and even travelled to Mumbai to try his luck in the Bollywood film industry.
He started writing poetry in Urdu when he was only in grade five. But his spiritual guide, Syed Abdul Sattar Shah Baacha, asked him to switch to his mother tongue — Pashto.
Baba may not have been a first-rate Urdu poet, but once he started composing verses in Pashto, he perfected Pashto ghazal to the extent that Pashtun critics conferred on him the title, Baba-e-Pashto ghazal (the father of Pashto ghazal).
Refering to his title, Hamza Baba says:
[Sta pa anango ki da Hamza da wino sra di,
Ta shwe da pukhto ghazala zwan za di Baba kram!]
The crimson of color in your cheeks,
Is the color of the blood of Hamza.
You came of age, Pashto Ghazal,
But turned me into a baba (an old man)
Hamza Baba amalgamated the chivalric spirit of Khushhal Khan Khattak, the humility of Rahman Baba and the refined romanticism of Abdul Hameed Baba into Pashto verse due to which Pashto ghazal poetry attained new heights.
Hamza Baba also heralded a new era in Pashto prose and fiction. Being a prolific writer, Baba contributed to almost every literary genre in Pashto — short story, novel, drama, literary criticism, satirical essays, pen-portraits and free verse.
He, in fact, Pashtunised Pashto ghazal and nazm, consciously presenting a soft image of the Pashtun nation and keeping the Sufi trend of Rahman Baba alive with a new vision and approach.
Baba considered Islam and Pakhtunwali as flip sides of a coin and negated aggressive nationalism in his writings. He wanted Pukhtuns to maintain their true identity and uphold high social and moral values to safeguard humanity against all kinds of prejudices.
Hamza Shinwari Baba was, undoubtedly, a flowering spring of extraordinary genius, and has become an icon of universal admiration beyond the barriers of cast, language, color, or creed.
Dr. Qabel Khan comments that Hamza Baba "is a virtual stream of friends of friends, disciples, admirers, and well-wishers. Hardly there was any day in his life he was not visited by his admirers and readers…his knowledge of Pashto is simply encyclopedic."

1- Erfaan is not directly translatable and all the english descriptions I have found of it were either incredibly inaccurate, gross oversimplifications or just completely incorrect. It is a vast concept (often linked with mysticism) which goes beyond the scope of this post.

Syrian refugees expand Brazilian palates
Anna Jean Kaiser, CS Monitor, July 18, 2017
SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL--On a Thursday morning in São Paulo, Ghazal Baranbo prepares for the lunch rush at her family’s restaurant. She carries out neatly organized trays of hummus, tabbouleh, falafel, and hindi kabab and arranges them in a buffet-style line. Her husband, Talal Altinawi, is speaking with their lawyer about the business.
At noon sharp, they’re slammed. The couple frenetically rearranges the dining room to accommodate the quick turnaround of lunch-break patrons while they take turns passing their 2-year-old daughter back and forth. They switch between using Arabic with each other and Portuguese with the costumers.
It looks like a well-choreographed dance, but four years ago Ms. Baranbo and Mr. Altinawi, refugees from Syria, could have never imagined they would own a successful Syrian restaurant in São Paulo, South America’s largest city. They used to live comfortably in a suburb of Damascus, where Altinawi was a mechanical engineer and Baranbo stayed at home with their two children. But as the civil war in Syria progressed and the Assad regime cracked down on civilians, it became too dangerous to stay.
Today, the couple is playing a part in the growing landscape of Syrian refugee-run restaurants popping up across São Paulo. Newly-arriving immigrants, who rarely have experience working in the restaurant industry, are turning to home-cooked Syrian food to make a living. It’s a phenomenon seen in this city for decades, with other waves of immigrants like Japanese, Lebanese, Cameroonians, and Armenians making a culinary foot-hold before them. The country’s open-door policy for refugees plays a big role in making this possible. And for Altinawi and Baranbo, it’s laid the groundwork for a city that’s already familiar with Middle Eastern food.
A wave of Middle Eastern immigrants in the 19th century helped make Syrian delicacies like esfiha (savory pastries) and quibe (spiced bulgur-wheat meatballs) staples in Brazil, and it’s estimated that 7 to 10 million Brazilians have Lebanese ancestry, or almost 5 percent of the population. Newly arrived Syrian refugees are capitalizing on Brazil’s appetite for their native cuisine, bringing back authenticity and flavor and introducing more unfamiliar dishes, ranging from shawarma to baklava.
Most refugees or immigrants here never planned to open a restaurant.
Dr. Saeed Mourad, an orthopedic surgeon from Damascus, came to Brazil two years ago. Converting his degrees and qualifications to practice medicine in Brazil was nearly impossible, so his family turned to the food industry. At their restaurant, they sell baklava, kanafeh pasteries, and sesame-covered barazek cookies, alongside Syrian-style coffee with cardamom.
“I decided opening a Syrian restaurant would be a good idea because it’s a quick way to get income. And Brazilian people really like Middle Eastern food,” Dr. Mourad says.
Many other recently arrived Syrians have followed suit. There’s Muna Sabores e Memórias Arabes, opened by a Syrian woman who sells sweets and other traditional foods that she makes in her home, and Eyad Abuharb, who’s had great success selling fast food-style shawarma sandwiches at his restaurant, New Shawarma, near São Paulo’s downtown. Adam Hamwia, who opened Adoomy in the city’s trendy Vila Madalena neighborhood, specializes in fried chicken and gyro-style wraps.
For Altinawi and Baranbo, the food solution was not an obvious one. Back in Damascus, Altinawi was arrested in what was described to him as a name mix-up (they had the wrong Talal Altinawi), and spent more than 3 months in prison. Soon after getting out, his family loaded up their car and drove the 75 miles to neighboring Lebanon.
“We spent 10 months going from embassy to embassy in Beirut. Brazil was the only place that opened their doors to us,” Baranbo says.
“When I looked down at my Brazilian visa, I thought to myself, ‘What is Brazil? I don’t know anything about this place,’ “ she says.
They arrived in São Paulo at the end of 2013--but it was a rough start. Altinawi began working as an engineer but, after 10 months working there, his employer went under amid Brazil’s relentless recession. Baranbo sold baby clothes on the streets.
They threw a joint birthday party for their son and daughter and served homemade Syrian food. An NGO worker who helps refugees in Brazil encouraged them to start selling street food as a side gig.
“I’m an engineer, not a chef,” was Altinawi’s response, which he still stands by, despite the restaurant’s success.
They started at a street market and eventually landed a catering job at a mosque for the entire month of Ramadan. Their friend from the NGO set up a Facebook page for them and an account on a crowdfunding site, with the goal of raising 60,000 Reais ($20,000) to open a restaurant. About 1,000 locals generously donated.
Then it was time to take on Brazil’s infamous bureaucracy.
“There are so many documents and so many government entities,” Altinawi says. “You need a lot of time and a lot of money for this process.”
But after five months dealing with the red tape, they opened Talal Culinária Síria in April 2016.
Brazil is a popular, if lesser-known, destination for refugees. That’s mostly due to its refugee policies, which are more lenient than the vetting processes in most countries in Europe and North America. There are more than 2,300 Syrian refugees here today, and nearly 10,000 refugees from all over the world. Most immigrants find themselves in São Paulo, the country’s largest city and economic hub.
Brazil has a rich tradition of receiving immigrants, from Arab immigrants coming from the then-Ottoman Empire, often fleeing religious persecution, to Japanese and European immigrants who came to work as laborers on coffee plantations in the early 1900s, or later fled from war. São Paulo is home to the largest Japanese population outside of Japan.
This is reflected in São Paulo’s world-renowned food scene--which trumps other Brazilian cities in its variety.
“Without a doubt the Syrian refugees in Brazil are benefitting from the long history of Middle Eastern immigrants who’ve come to São Paulo and built up the tradition of Middle Eastern food here,” says Tamyris Roxo, a local São Paulo food blogger who studied gastronomy, history, and culture. Their country’s food provides “a strong link for them in Brazil.”
Middle Eastern food is so ubiquitous here that there’s even a fast-food restaurant called “Habib’s,” which sells esfihas, BBQ kaftas, and baba ghanoush, alongside cheeseburgers and pizza. Its logo is a winking man with a big grin wearing a fez.

Remembering India’s first-star comedian, Noor Mohammad Charlie, on his 36th death anniversary today. The talented actor Noor Mohammad, also known as Charlie, became the highest paid comedian of his time. Noor Mohammad belonged to the Memon community, and like many young men of his age, he was a great fan of Charlie Chaplin. He loved to walk and talk with Chaplin’s style and even had a tiny mustache like his ideal artiste from Hollywood. In its infancy, the Hindi film industry handed over the mantle of comic roles to one man, Noor Mohammad aka Baba Charlie. Later on, his version of Charlie Chaplin, complete with the walk, talk, and mustache, became so popular that he added the moniker to his name and was called Noor Mohammad Charlie. The 1932 film Pak Daman Raqqasa, directed by B. R. Oberoi, introduced this most peculiar young character Baba Charlie, with nudges, prods and his individual hairstyle that took the nation by storm. Later, films like Chandarhasa, Premi Pagal, Nadra, Farzand-e-Hind, Toofan Mail, College Girl, Raat Ki Rani, Secretary, Thokar, Barrister’s Wife, Sanjog, Taqdeer, and Musafir made Charlie a remarkable artiste of the subcontinent. He even played the lead in some of the humorous movies, including Chand Tara, where he was partnered with Swaranlata, very famous in those days, Ghazal, where Leela Chitnis was his heroine, and Dulha, with Chandraprabha. He directed a film, Dhandhora, which opened to record numbers in its first week. Such was Charlie’s popularity that he even had songs picturized on him, one of the first comedians to have the privilege. He wasn’t just the token comedian there to fill the comedy quotient, the audience wanted more of him as well. He began singing comic songs like ‘Jab Se Mali Teri Khak’ from Thokar (1939) and gave hits like ‘Zindagi Hai Fareb’ from Chand Tara (1945). He was no slouch when it came to singing, performing duets opposite Amirbai Karnataki and Suraiya. These comedic songs greatly influenced later comedians Johny Walker and Mehmood. Not only was Noor Mohammad the first comedian to sing songs, but he was also the first to take a catchphrase and turn it into a hit song. In the film Sanjog (1943), where he was cast opposite Mehtab, he is found singing, “Palat! Tera dhyan kidhar hai?”, decades before Varun Dhawan popularised it in a song in Main Tera Hero (2014). After Partition, Charlie moved to Pakistan and made around a dozen films. In 1960, he came back to India to act in a few films. Fittingly, his last film, Akeli Mat Jaiyo (1963), was also the final Ranjit production. He was denied citizenship by the government of India and migrated to USA where he died on 30 June 1983.

Kaifi Azmi
Sayyid Akhtar Hussein Rizvi, known as Kaifi Azmi January 14, 1919 – May 10, 2002) was an Indian Urdu poet. He is considered to be one of the greatest Urdu poets of 20th century.[citation needed] Together with Pirzada Qasim, Jon Elia and others he participated in the most memorable mushairas of the twentieth century
Early life
Azmi was born into a Muslim family in the village of Mizwaa(n) in Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh, India.
Family
Azmi was married to Shaukhat Azmi. They have a daughter, Shabana Azmi (An Indian Actress of film, television and theatre) and a son, Baba Azmi (Indian Cinematographer).
Career
Writings
At age eleven, Azmi wrote his first ghazal Itna To Zindagi Mein Kisi Ki Khalal Pade and somehow managed to get himself invited to a mushaira and over there, he recited a ghazal, rather a couplet of the ghazal which was very much appreciated by the president of the mushaira, Mani Jaisi, but most of the people, including his father, thought he recited his elder brother's ghazal. When his elder brother denied it, his father and his clerk decided to test his poetic talent. They gave him one of the lines of a couplet and asked him to write a ghazal in the same meter and rhyme. Azmi accepted the challenge and completed a ghazal. This particular ghazal was to become a rage in undivided India and it was immortalized as it was sung by legendary ghazal singer, Begum Akhtar. Azmi abandoned his studies of Persian and Urdu during the Quit India agitations in 1942 and shortly thereafter became a full-time Marxist when he accepted membership of the Communist Party of India in 1943.
During this period, the leading progressive writers of Lucknow noticed him. They were very impressed by his leadership qualities. They also saw in him a budding poet and extended all possible encouragement towards him. Consequently, Azmi started to win great acclaim as a poet and became a member of Progressive Writers' Movement of India. At the age of twenty-four, he started activities in the textile mill areas of Kanpur. As a full-time worker, he left his life of comfort, though he was the son of a zamindar. He was asked to shift his base to Bombay, work amongst the workers and start party work with a lot of zeal and enthusiasm and at the same time would attend mushairas in different parts of India. In Bombay, he joined Ali Sardar Jafri in writing for the party’s paper, Qaumi Jung. In 1947, he visited Hyderabad to participate in a mushaira. There he met, fell in love with and married a woman named Shaukat Azmi. She later became a renowned actress in theatre and films. They had two children together, Shabana Azmi (b. 1950), a renowned actress of Indian cinema and Baba Azmi, a noted cameraman.
Poetry
Like most of the Urdu poets, Azmi began as a ghazal writer, cramming his poetry with the repeated themes of love and romance in a style that was replete with clichés and metaphors. However, his association with the Progressive Writers' Movement and Communist Party made him embark on the path of socially conscious poetry. In his poetry, he highlights the exploitation of the subaltern masses and through them he conveys a message of the creation of a just social order by dismantling the existing one. Yet, his poetry cannot be called plain propaganda. It has its own merits; intensity of emotions, in particular, and the spirit of sympathy and compassion towards the disadvantaged section of society, are the hallmark of his poetry. His poems are also notable for their rich imagery and in this respect, his contribution to Urdu poetry can hardly be overstated. Azmi's first collection of poems, Jhankar was published in 1943. His important works including anthologies of poetry, were Aakhir-e-Shab, Sarmaya, Awaara Sajde, Kaifiyaat, Nai Gulistan, an anthology of articles he wrote for Urdu Blitz, Meri Awaaz Suno, a selection of his film lyrics, and the script of Heer Ranjha in Devanagari. His best known poems are Aurat, Makaan,Daaera,Saanp, and Bahuroopni.
Films
Azmi's work in films includes working as a lyricist, writer and actor. Azmi wrote his first lyrics for the film Buzdil, directed by Shaheed Latif, in 1952. His early work as a writer was mainly for Nanubhai Vakil's films like Yahudi Ki Beti (1956), Parvin (1957), Miss Punjab Mail (1958) and Id Ka Chand (1958). While directors like Khwaja Ahmad Abbas and Bimal Roy strove to create the “New Cinema”, writers like Sahir Ludhianvi, Jan Nisar Akhtar, Majrooh Sultanpuri, and Kaifi changed the tenor and vocabulary of the Hindi film song, creating a fresh new wave in Hindi film lyrics that lasted many years. [1]His greatest feat as a writer was Chetan Anand's Heer Raanjha (1970) wherein the entire dialogue of the film was in verse. It was a tremendous achievement and one of the greatest feats of Hindi film writing. Azmi also won great critical accolades for the script, dialogues and lyrics of M.S. Sathyu's Garam Hawa (1973), based on a story by Ismat Chughtai.
Azmi also wrote the dialogues for Shyam Benegal's Manthan (1976) and Sathyu's Kanneshwara Rama (1977). As a lyricist and songwriter, though he wrote for numerous films, he will always be remembered for Guru Dutt's Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959) and Chetan Anand's Haqeeqat (1964), India's greatest war film. Some notables films for which he wrote lyrics include Kohra (1964), Anupama (1966), Uski Kahani (1966), Saat Hindustani (1969), Shola Aur Shabnam, Parwana (1971), Bawarchi (1972), Pakeezah (1972), Hanste Zakhm (1973), Arth (1982) and Razia Sultan (1983). For Naunihal (1967), he wrote the song "Meri Aawaz Suno Pyar ka Raaz Suno" (Hear my voice, hear the secret of love) sung by Mohammad Rafi. The song is picturized over the funeral procession of Prime Minister of India, Jawahar Lal Nehru. Years later, after Azmi's own death his daughter, Shabana Azmi mentioned finding comfort in verses from the song. [1]He also played a memorable role of Naseem's grandfather in Naseem (1995). Azmi died on May 10, 2002 at around the age of eighty three. He was survived by his wife, daughter and son. His autobiography is included in a collection of his works, Aaj Ke Prashid Shayar: Kaifi Azmi.
In media
Azmi was the subject of a documentary film called Kaifi Azmi (1979), directed by Raman Kumar. In 1997, he recited his own poems for Kaifiyaat, an audio book on his collected works.
Kaifi Aur Mein, a play based on his life, his works and the memoir of his wife, Shaukat Azmi – Yadon Ki Rahguzar (Down Memory Lane), was written and performed by Javed Akhtar and Shabana Azmi, and performed in India as well as abroad in 2006.[2] Another play, directed by Rani Balbir, Waqt Ne Kiya Kya Hasin Sitam, based Kaifi Azmi’s life and writings was staged in 2005, and received rave reviews.[3]
Awards
He was the recipient of Padma Shri one of the Indian Government's highest civilian awards. Besides he was awarded the Uttar Pradesh Urdu Academy Award and the Sahitya Akademi Award for Urdu for his collection Awaara Sajde, Special Award of Maharashtra Urdu Academy, Soviet Land Nehru Award, Lotus Award from the Afro-Asian Writers' Association, and President’s Award for national integration. In 1998, Government of Maharashtra conferred the Jyaneshwara Award on him. He was also honoured with the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Fellowship for lifetime achievement.[2]In 2000, he was conferred the first Millennium Award by the Government of Delhi and the Delhi Urdu Academy. He has also been honoured with a doctorate from Vishva Bharati University, Santiniketan. [4].[citation needed]
