you bite your lip as you survey the downstairs floor of the NCT frat house. from your position on the fifth step of the staircase (you may have bypassed the crudely drawn ‘OUT OF BOUNDS - GO FUCK SOMEWHERE ELSE’ sign, but you figure you can get away with it as NCT’s favourite menace), you can see most of the lower floor. the kitchen is in the far right corner, double doors wide open to display the multitude of students hanging around the island covered in an assortment of beverages and stereotypical red solo cups. in the middle sits a huge plastic bowl full of doyoung’s infamous blackout punch. it’s an alarming orange colour and tastes dangerously like fruit juice instead of any of the numerous types of alcohol that are mixed in. jaemin drank so much one party last year he had to buy yeri coffee for two weeks to make up for the dress incident, which he still doesn’t even remember happening. he passed out in jeno’s lap five minutes later, hence the name. currently, you can see wooyoung and changbin yelling excitedly at san, before said soccer player downs an entire cup of the stuff and then goes back in for another.

and directly below you, pushed up against the staircase, is the entire reason you’re scanning the house so meticulously: the beer pong table. your master plan to get jaehyun inebriated enough to agree to playing shinee on night night wednesday all relies on your ability to secure a partner skilled enough to give the reigning NCT beer pong champion a half-decent challenge. at the moment, ryujin and yeji are wiping the floor with felix and hyunjin, who is dramatically fake crying while downing yet another cup. eyes flitting back to the corner of the room where yuta is still engaged in conversation, you’re about to descend the stairs and proposition him when something catches your attention.

I think I've finally managed to gather my thoughts regarding this so let's talk about it:

For a long time, I've thought of and described groups like BigBang, BTS, Block B, B.A.P, NCT, iKon, etc as "Hip-Hop Inspired Kpop Groups" and I still stand on that. Even though many of them have gone on to try all types of different genres I think they all started off with heavier hip-hop influences. Also, their rapping members are some of their main attractions and most popular members until this day.

On the other hand, I've always struggled to figure out why a group like 1tym would call themselves a "kpop group" (or at least Danny Im has referred to them as that idk what the other 3 would say). It honestly annoyed me a bit because I wanted to claim them as a Khiphop group since I think 1tym is and was important for the progression of hip-hop in Korea (YG Ent as a whole was. I think the infusion of hip-hop into their pop groups help make hip-hop overall more palatable. It helped adjust people's ears to it who otherwise wouldn't have been exposed to hip-hop. Or they just may not have liked it had they been exposed to more "pure" hip-hop first.)

I've finally come to the conclusion (well at least for now cause obviously my views are always growing and evolving) that "Kpop inspired Hip-Hop Groups and Musicians" can exist as well. That's where I'd put groups like Jinusean, 1Tym, and (the criminally underrated and sorely missed) M.I.B. I always felt like M.I.B really toed the line between Kpop and Khiphop. So I was thinking about them and it led me to having this realization. Now, that I'm typing it out groups like Electroboyz also fit into that realm. Even (the incredibly talented but extremely poorly executed) 1Punch can probably fit in that realm. A lot of these groups end up floundering because it's a bit too much to toed the line that heavily. I think it alienates fanbases. But also, one thing M.I.B and 1Punch had in common is that they did not have companies that were capable of really putting the promo and money behind them anyway. I think there's probably a few more groups who can fit into this category but they were not very common and I can't remember any of the top of my head at the moment.

The big story here is that obviously I got back into K-Pop in a big way this year. And specifically, it's because of the return of B.A.P as BJYM and then me falling for Han in Stray Kids. But also, went to the ATEEZ concert and saw NCT 127 at (my first) KCON, so that led to their placements on this list. I also saw NCT Dream in concert, but I didn't have necessarily a song that I really latched onto. I also got very into Day6 (through Stray Kids, really - I watched the thing with Bang Chan and Young K and I gave Day6 a listen, and their music is very much my taste. Also got a bit into P1Harmony and Seventeen, but to a lesser extent.

Stray Kids leads by a LOT. 542 scrobbles and ATEEZ in second place with 340. With that said, I am actually more of a Hanpop aficionado than a Stray Kids discography listener, but in Deezer, some of the Hanpop songs are labeled with Stray Kids as the artist and not just Han. 75 of those scrobbles are just Han - still keeps SKZ at the top, but if you add to the 44 of the scrobbles scrobbled under Han, that would actually put just him at #4. This is not including unit songs. This is also not including all of the times I may have watched the Hold My Hand music video..........

The Beatles are up there because I went to England this year, and my friend made me a playlist which included many a Beatles song. Nickelback is up there because I went to see the Nickelback documentary with friends haha. And Younha is up there, because she's always up there, but I belatedly realized she had a new album out.

ATE was my first Stray Kids comeback as a Stay, so no wonder it's up on top. Chk Chk Boom is a really fun title track. Hop literally just came out, but it's buoyed up by some fantastic solo tracks (My Top 3 are Hold My Hand (obvi), Youth, and Ultra - with As You Are coming pretty close).

I saw Operation Mincemeat whilst in London, and I have been singing its praises to anyone who will listen! It's SO GOOD. Speaking of my UK trip, King Crimson and Small Faces are on there because they were on the list of albums my friend gave me and they are really long albums lol.

Surprise with Greg Raposo! He was not my Dream Street bias (I have been in love with JMac since I was 11) but I've always appreciated Greg's talent. He also at one point followed me on Twitter, which was very exciting to me haha.

Homecoming at Sunset

The shrill buzz of the kitchen timer echoed through the house, signaling the cookies were ready. Smiling, you jumped up from the couch and rushed to the stove. With a few quick taps, you silenced the timer and turned off the oven. Grabbing the potholders, you opened the oven door and carefully pulled out the baking sheet, setting it on the cooling rack above the stove. The sweet, buttery aroma of homemade chocolate chip cookies filled the air, and you couldn't help but beam at the sight of their golden perfection. After putting the potholders back in their place, you headed to your room to get ready for the evening.

Today was your boyfriend Yongguk's birthday. For weeks, you and his closest friends had been planning a surprise party at the beach to welcome him home from B.A.P's three-month-long world tour. While Yongguk and the others were unpacking and freshening up after their flight, you'd been busy cooking some of his favorite foods, filling the house with scents you knew he loved.

Slipping into your black strapless dress adorned with white tropical flowers, you let the fabric settle at mid-thigh and paired it with black sandals to match. You moved to the bathroom, pulling your hair free from the messy bun it had been tied in, letting your wavy locks fall to just below your mid-back. With a few strokes of your brush, you smoothed out the tangles, making sure every strand fell just right. After a final glance in the mirror and a few finishing touches, you smiled in satisfaction.

A chime from your phone drew your attention. Picking it up from the bed, you read Daehyun's message: We're at the beach and ready when you are. Smiling, you typed back a quick reply: Just finished up here. Be there soon.

Grabbing your purse and keys, you hurried downstairs to pack the last of the food into the wicker picnic basket. You carefully added a few cookies into a sandwich bag and placed it alongside the other dishes, double-checking that nothing was forgotten. Then, with everything loaded into your car, you started the engine and set off for the beach. Excitement bubbled within you, and you couldn't stop smiling, your thoughts consumed by the prospect of seeing Yongguk again after so long.

When you arrived, you spotted the familiar black van parked by the beach. Instead of pulling up beside it, you parked a few spaces away, just in case Yongguk returned to the van for something. Texting Daehyun to let him know you'd arrived, you stepped out and began unloading the basket when you felt a light tap on your shoulder.

Turning, you found Daehyun standing there, grinning. You immediately hugged him tightly. "It's so good to see you again! How was the tour?"

"It's good to see you too," he said with a laugh. "The tour was amazing, but we're all glad to be home. Especially Yongguk—he wouldn't stop talking about you."

You chuckled, shaking your head. "I'm glad you guys had fun. And sorry about that—you know how he gets."

Together, you carried everything to a nearby picnic table, where Daehyun had already laid out a tablecloth. As you set out plates, cups, and utensils, Daehyun headed back to the others, leaving you to straighten out your dress and hair one last time.

A burst of laughter drew your attention to the group approaching the picnic area. You noticed Yongguk struggling against the blindfold his friends had placed over his eyes, his muffled protests making you giggle.

The group stopped a few feet away, and Youngjae removed the blindfold. Yongguk blinked a few times, adjusting to the bright sunlight. When his eyes landed on you, his jaw dropped slightly in surprise. You smiled softly, raising a hand in a small wave.

"Happy birthday, Yongguk," you said warmly.

Without a word, he closed the distance between you, wrapping his arms tightly around you. His embrace was firm yet gentle, his familiar warmth enveloping you completely. You buried your face in his chest, taking in his scent, the ache of missing him finally easing. After a moment, he pulled back just enough to cup your face with his hands, his deep brown eyes locking with yours before he leaned down and pressed his lips softly to yours.

The kiss was sweet and unhurried, the faint taste of salt lingering on his lips from the ocean breeze. You wrapped your arms around his neck, kissing him back until the sound of the others clearing their throats brought you both back to reality.

"Happy birthday, Yongguk!" the group chorused, patting him on the back as they ushered him toward the table. He didn't let go of your hand the entire time.

The celebration carried on for hours, filled with laughter, teasing, and stories of the group's tour. As the sun began to set, Yongguk turned to you, his hand still in yours. "How about we grab a blanket and watch the sunset together?"

Smiling, you nodded. He grabbed the blanket from the bench and, after letting the others know, led you down the shoreline. The warm sand shifted beneath your feet as you walked hand in hand, the rhythmic sound of waves crashing against the shore creating a perfect backdrop.

Finding a quiet spot, Yongguk spread the blanket out, settling down and pulling you close between his legs. You leaned back against his chest, stretching your legs out in front of you as his arms wrapped securely around your waist. Together, you watched as the sun dipped below the horizon, its fiery hues reflecting on the ocean's surface.

A cool breeze swept through, sending a shiver down your spine. Feeling you tremble, Yongguk tightened his hold, running his hands gently up and down your arms to warm you. He leaned down, pressing soft kisses to your neck before resting his chin on your shoulder.

Turning your head slightly, you met his gaze, his brown eyes soft and full of affection. He leaned in, capturing your lips in another kiss, this one slower and more tender, as if savoring the moment.

When you finally pulled away, you turned back to the ocean, letting the soothing sounds of the waves wash over you. His arms tightened around you, and in a whisper, you said, "Welcome home, Yongguk. Welcome home."

Kpop title track ranking: B.A.P

In this series I’ll be ranking kpop groups/soloists title tracks based on my taste.

Because the upcoming comeback is nearing, B.A.P and title track ranking came to my mind at some point. Then after some further encouragement from @bbcblackjack I figured I really should do this. Let's see how many surprises there are this time around.

1004 (Angel) - The song that single handedly made me fan of theirs. And it's still as lovely as it was then and number 1 spot is still the only correct one for it.

One Shot - I listened to most of the title track a few weeks ago and already then it was very clear to me that One Shot is one of the songs that has stood the test of time and is still as brilliant as it was when it was released. I always liked it but I have to say I appreciate it now more than ever. Truly a classic for a reason.

Honeymoon - This was the biggest positive surprise to me. I don't think I cared all that much about Honeymoon when it came out but now I'm fully sold on it. What a glow-up!

Wake Me Up - This just works so so well. Full marks, no notes. Just personal preference preventing it from going to the absolute top of the list.

That's My Jam - Now hear me out. This has no right to be this high with me knowing the lyrical content. However, it's a certified banger and with my lack of Korean language skills I can just choose to ignore them and that's what I do here xD

Rain Sound - This one has always been quite high on my unofficial B.A.P rankings and it still holds up well. Lovely and sad breakup banger, what's not to like.

Young, Wild & Free - It was such an impactful comeback at the time. And it really works as a song even now years later.

Badman - This one I have the most vivid memory of listening to very early on in my kpop finding days thanks to @bbcblackjack recommending this one. Definitely wasn't an immediate hit with me but it grew on me and it still seems work.

Coffee Shop - A pleasant one that still holds up.

Stop It - I have to say that I had clearly just forgotten about this cutesy side of B.A.P xD However, this one clearly works for me for some reason.

Skydive - Let's start by admitting that this was originally about to be on the bottom end of the list as it got pretty much no reaction from me on the first listen after years. But I had to come back to it and this seems more fitting spot for it. And shout out to that music video, if you haven't seen it I can only recommend watching it.

Warrior - Not gonna lie it's a dope way to debut. Not one I reach out for though.

Power - Another dope one that I just don't go for.

Feel So Good - Just sound-wise this should go at least a bit higher but lyrics drop it for me.

Hurricane - I know I used to like this quite a bit but it hasn't aged well enough for me to put it any higher than this, unfortunately.

Crash - This one threw me into a loop as I listened to these in chronological order. Like what happened here. How they went from No Mercy to this cutesy lovey-dovey song? I have no idea. Cutesy B.A.P seems to also be a double edged sword for me and this one seems to be one that belongs to the bottom end of the list.

Hands Up - I just have no connection with this one. I listened to it when it came out, was disappointed by it and never went back. Now listening to it didn't change my mind enough to pump it up any higher than this. The fact that it is more fresh and interesting sounding than the next couple helped it not end up on the bottom though.

No Mercy - Now, No Mercy was really tough one for me to start liking at all back in the days. Eventually I came around to it a bit but I still have to say I clearly prefer others above it.

Where Are You? - It's sweet and all but it just never left much of an impression on me as a song. The music video is really cute though!

B-side shout outs: I Remember (Yongguk ft. Daehyun version) - Absolutely gorgeous song. And the Daehyun version was the one I heard first so I'm biased towards this one. The one with Yang Yoseob in it is great too as is to be expected. What the Hell - One of their many songs with some social commentary. Save Me - This one is used in the 1004(Angel) music video and that made me originally search this one out. It's a great dark type of song. Blind - Your sad love song about getting cheated on.

Playlist/Notes

Organized Noize ft. Big Boi, Big Rube, Sleepy Brown, and Cee-Lo : We The Ones

A very fortunate find during a recent digging expedition, I didn't even know that the "Organized Noize EP" existed until I had it in my hands. Looking around on Discogs, it seems that it was a limited release in 2017 of 500 copies, on fiery orange vinyl and with a fantastic cover. Apparently twenty years in the making - probably because the production team behind OutKast, Goodie Mob, and more were kind of busy - it's a quality seven-song collection that you can now also get digitally! I heard a few seconds of this track at the listening post and it was the one that convinced me to buy the record, a musically-stirring and always-relevant and timely call to stand up and fight against oppression.

Orbital : Adnan's

This industrial-sounding track from the 1996 "In Sides" album was an extended version of a song they contributed to the 1995 "War Child" charity LP, and was named after a young boy who was killed by a missile during the war in the former Yugoslavia. Paul Hartnoll of Orbital broke this, and the rest of the album, down in a way only one of the creators could - so I'll link you to his own words.

Sepalot ft. Blu : Surrender

I've heard the instrumental of this many a time and had actually forgotten that there even was a vocal version! The beat went down well on the most recent #BeatsOnly show on my Twitch channel, so I thought I'd bring it out on this episode. The angular production from German producer Sepalot lurches, twitches, and squelches, with Blu fittingly being a bit more aggro lyrically than you might have expected from some of his better-known work. I have this on the B-side of a 12" headed up by "She Likes Me" with Frank Nitty, but you can also find it on the 2014 "Red Handed" LP.

Jigmastas ft. Shabaam Saadique : Too Ill

Does what it says on the tin! DJ Spinna on production on this track with the dramatic backing, courtesy of a well-known old TV show sample, while the processing on the vocals makes it sound like weak MCs are being admonished over the phone! By the way, the spelling of Shabaam's name is different than what I've seen on previous releases, but as it's written this way on this album ("Resurgence") I'm taking that as being correct unless/until I find out otherwise.

Public Enemy : Louder Than A Bomb

A classic from what is often said to be the greatest Hip-Hop album of all time, "It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back" (lot of text to write on a cassette label btw). Those who follow me know I'll sometimes refer to the more grimy records as "not calling for the building of a new nation or anything" but this track literally does! Chuck D will always be the first name that comes to mind when pro-Black, politically-driven Hip-Hop is mentioned, and this is just one of his outstanding vocal performances. Bomb Squad on production of course, with a hard-hitting track that would dominate most other MCs, even now. Sonically, you might notice that the sound is busy but not "thick" - if it was made nowadays, I suspect it'd be mixed with a lot more bass, not to mention built with more high-fidelity samplers. Would that have been "better"? Hard to say, but this is revolutionary in all senses regardless. 

Bumpy Knuckles & DJ Premier : B.A.P. (Bumpy and Premier)

For those of more gentle dispositions, you may as well skip to the next track! Otherwise, this is quintessential boom-bap rawness, courtesy of DJ Premier - one of the finest exponents of the style - and fellow Gang Starr Foundation MC Bumpy Knuckles. Wicked track from the "KoleXXXion" LP, where Bumpy starts each verse with the same four bars, before raining fire on snakes, suckers, and studio gangstas over the rugged beat. No sir, Bumpy did not fall off, not even a little.

Stro Elliot : Miles Funk

I may have been late getting on the Stro Elliot train, only hearing his stuff in the last three years or so, but now I'm firmly on board and settled with a book and some snacks. The drums are cracking and merciless on this track from his 2016 eponymous LP, and they lead the way for the bassline and funky guitar to do what they do. Definitely check the album - it's really excellent work.

Dubbul O & Jointhedots : Life:Mics

A great new Manchester release to open the year! You should already know that Dubbul O is one of my favourite MCs from any coast or territory, while the excellent Jointhedots have been holding it down in fine style since most of the members were part of the best-known lineup of The Mouse Outfit. The most special feature on this track is the guitar of the much-missed Phil Ratcliffe, who sadly passed away in 2022, and whose family will continue to benefit from any posthumous releases. Coming together over the peak of the COVID restrictions, this track started when bassist/bandleader/producer Defty sent beats around Manchester for musicians to add their own touches to. As well as Phil Ratcliffe, the flautist Dr Claire Press got busy on here - you may remember her memorable work alongside Dubbul O again on "Never Get Enough" all the way back in 2012! Flavourful and polished music as always from this collective, and worthy of your support.

New Sector Movements ft. Allysha Joy : These Times

Neither of these artists were on my radar previously, so it was a big bonus when First Word Records included this cut on the "Two Syllables Volume Twenty" compilation! As it turns out, New Sector Movements is actually an alias of IG Culture, a UK stalwart respected for his work as part of Dodge City Productions, and of course he shows the deft touch of a veteran on the music here. The vocals are carried by the powerful voice of Australian songstress Allysha Joy, who started singing as a youngster in the church and you can hear the influence very much still with her! This track in full is actually about six minutes long, so if you like what you're hearing, you know what to do...

Common : The Movement

I'll have you know that I did actually mix this in bang-on, but J Dilla decided to go all the way weird with the timing and drum placement at the start, to the point I almost re-ripped the tune from the "2K6 : The Tracks" CD to be sure! This one had somehow escaped me on first listen, but it's got that electronic sound that was increasingly a feature of Dilla's late work, with that edginess contrasting with Common's smooth and familiar voice.

Actual Proof ft. TP : Show You The Way

North Carolina in the house, with Actual Proof (Enigma and Sundown) linking with guest TP (who I don't know much about) for a 9th Wonder-produced track that sounds very different than the intro might lead you to expect. Lyrically, in places it almost comes off as a rougher, less civilised take on "Mind Sex" by dead prez, blended with some of that LL Cool J - in attitude, if not in flow! Track down the 2012 "Black Boy Radio" LP for this one.

Mecca:83, Buscrates, and J Vibes : Amber Hue

Such warm vibes emanate from this 2019 composition, with Macclesfield, Pittsburgh, and Aarhus (Denmark) in collaboration. I don't know who did what, but the final result is a thing of beauty!

Tall Black Guy, Craig Mack : Flavor In Ya Ear Remix

The original beat by Easy Mo Bee is one of the greatest in Hip-Hop history in my opinion, so it takes a brave man to put his production in its place - and right here, Tall Black Guy is that man! Tough drums and a relatively simple bassline provide the structure for some spaced-out touches and soul vocal sampling to undergird TBG's take on one of the all-time great posse cuts.

1773 & Strange Soul Music : Dialed In

Manchester's Strange Soul Music is a fearsome producer, the man no-one wanted to face in last year's WORKINONIT beat battle! He's been putting in that work for years and this is from one of his latest releases, "The Strange Soul Project" a seven-track collaboration with Chicago MCs Jay Nagoma and Wisdm Uno. Themed around a method of internet access that might be unfamiliar to the younger listeners, this is a brief, but strong, opener to the project.

Clear Soul Forces : Nine 5ive

It's a shame that the 2020 "ForcesWithYou" LP is ostensibly the last from this Detroit crew - their stuff has always been energetically high-quality. Ilajide on the beat of course, while on the mic, CSF reference everything/one from Busta Rhymes to Mortal Kombat via George Washington Carver in a track that lasts well under three minutes. May the force be with them, indeed.

Heather B : Steady Rockin'

Straight-ahead Hip-Hop, with the commanding voice and bars of Heather B over the boom-bap production of DJ Premier. Vocalist Twyla adds a little sugar to the hook, but the rest of this track from 2002's "Eternal Affairs" is pretty much as stripped-down as you can get.

Khrysis : The Devil Wears Designer (Instrumental)

North Carolina representing again here, with a groove borrowing clearly from a classic soul record on this instrumental from "The Hour Of Khrysis".

DJ 2-Tone Jones ft. Prince Po, Asheru, Joe.D and yU : Not Down

I've always thought that one of the most important inflection points in the culture was when our ability to self-police was countered by the epithet "playa hater", which nowadays is more likely to take the form of "but he getting the bag tho". This call to arms from the "Contraband From India" LP features real MCs with real commitment letting us know that the leeches, the culture vultures, exploitative corporate interests of various shapes, and everyone else taking away from the culture rather than adding on need to be ejected. The production is not minimal as such, but well-spaced, with the sparse drum pattern and Indian string samples avoiding a situation where the instrumental ends up fighting the MCs for the spotlight, which is critical when what they're saying is of actual importance.

Please remember to support the artists you like! The purpose of putting the podcast out and providing the full tracklist is to try and give some light, so do use the songs on each episode as a starting point to search out more material. If you have Spotify in your country it's a great way to explore, but otherwise there's always Youtube and the like. Seeing your favourite artists live is the best way to put money in their pockets, and buy the vinyl/CDs/downloads of the stuff you like the most!
