From a conversation with @fatesought:
But admittedly I dont 100% remember the larger political context of her ascension. I remember the immediate stuff but cant remember why other vampires dont like her like is it just because she's not as awful as them?
I’ve been meaning to write a lengthy and detailed post about this, but instead of that, I’m gonna try to make it quick and dirty. Try being the operative word.
Bianca was a slave for 2,000 years. Not just her human life, but as a vampire as well. Essentially, Bianca had an affair with this beautiful girl she met by chance, and it turned out that girl was a vampire whose master felt that he owned her. When he found out about her affair with some human slave girl, Adonis decided to punish Oriana by tracking down said slave girl (Bianca) and burning her household to the fucking ground. Everyone but Bianca died, including Bianca’s human master and her two year old daughter.
Adonis made Bianca a vampire in order to make Oriana suffer. He tortured her and subjugated her knowing that Oriana would blame herself, knowing that Oriana had feelings for her-- because Adonis was a sadist in the purest form of the word. He would encourage relationships between his vampires so that he could use these relationships to inflict emotional wounds as a bonus to the physical ones. We’re talking about a man who owned his own torture theatre, where he would assemble vampires as an audience to watch him flay someone they loved alive.
This is how she met her husband, Renard LeMercier. Some 500 years ago, Adonis won Renard in a bet against Renard’s sire. Renard was a spoiled asshole who thought being a vampire was gonna be great, and he was not at all prepared for Adonis’ circus of evil. Oriana and Bianca befriended him, took care of him, helped him to keep his mind whole. Eventually, the three of them became lovers, but this only meant that Oriana suffered more. Eventually she became so depressed, she wanted to kill herself. Bianca and Renard worked together to get another vampire master to take Oriana from Adonis as part of a trade. Their efforts were successful, and Oriana was finally safe, and they saved her life.
Fast forward to the early 1990s, about a hundred years later, Adonis unveils in his torture theatre... surprise!! It’s Oriana. They have no idea when/how/why he got her back, but he’s up there, and he’s hurting her, and Renard makes this sound like his heart is breaking, and Adonis has that demented fucking smile on his face, and Bianca just.... snaps. She stands up, breaks the leg off her chair, rushes the stage, and fucking stakes Adonis. With a wooden chair leg. The only reason it worked was because no one would have ever considered doing it. It was as much a surprise to Bianca as it was to anyone else, and if there hadn’t been a literal audience of people to witness it, people probably wouldn’t even believe it happened. But vampire law is vampire law, and it made Bianca queen when only the night before she had been a pawn and a slave.
Adonis was a big player. He wielded a lot of power in a lot of countries and collected an impressive array of vampires in his control and wealth. He had his fingers in a lot of pies. Some vampires were pissed he was dead, allies or friends who now have to deal with some lowly slave girl who murdered him. Some didn’t care about Adonis, but they certainly care about the kingdom he left behind, and they don’t think Bianca deserves it. They think she is weak, open, defenseless... that there is this giant dragon horde of blood and gold there for the taking and all they have to do is wipe this ridiculous slave girl off the map. And it’s not just the vampire community either, because Adonis was involved in a lot of crazy preternatural shit, so. Yeah. For some vampires it’s personal. For others, it’s business. But they all see her as weak and unworthy, and she’s sitting on something they want.
In case you’re wondering, it isn’t possible for a vampire to abdicate their throne. If they tried to, they would always have some claim, and so no one who took power following them would ever really be safe in their seat. They would always try to eliminate a perceived threat, to tie up loose ends so to speak. And besides, if Bianca were to give up the throne, if she were to be defeated, then there are no guarantees who would take Adonis’ place. All the people she loves, the people she’s known and protected and suffered with for two thousand years, their lives are in danger, and she is the only thing standing between them and an uncertain future. So she fights, not for power, but for love.
