Junkers Ju 90B-1 transport (J4+JH) of Lufttransportstaffel 290 under attack by a Martin B-26 Marauder, flown by Wing Commander WSG Maydwell, the Commanding Officer of No. 14 Squadron RAF flying from Tunisia, 23.7.43. The Ju 90 headed for shore at Bastia, the Marauder then breaking off to avoid Flak. The Ju 90 was hit by the Marauder and Flak. The pilot, Oberfeldwebel H H Boldt, ditched it in the sea, where it remains for the enjoyment of divers. Wg Cdr Maydwell’s crews had 3 confirmed kills, all large transports: this Ju 90, a Messerschmitt Me 323 Gigant and a Savoia Marchetti SM.82. For more, see my Facebook group - Eagles Of The Reich

Martin B-26 by Willard Womack Via Flickr: An excellent model of an early B-26 with the short wing. The hole in the fuselage under the leading edge of the stabilizer is the side or waist gunner. There is another on the other side. .

The US military on Thursday said a Chinese jet came dangerously close to a US bomber earlier this week over the South China Sea, part of what Washington has said is increasingly risky behaviour by Chinese military aircraft.
The US military said that on Tuesday, a Chinese J-11 jet came within 10 feet (3m) of the B-52 aircraft.
“During the night time intercept, the PRC (People’s Republic of China) pilot flew in an unsafe and unprofessional manner, demonstrated poor airmanship by closing with uncontrolled excessive speed, flying below, in front of, and within 10 feet of the B-52, putting both aircraft in danger of collision,” a US military statement said.
idk I think if they were able to stunt on you like that that's quite good airmanship [26 Oct 23]

Elizabeth L. Gardner (1921 – December 22, 2011)  One of the first American female military pilots and member of the WASPS ( Women Airforce Service Pilots), having trained with Lieutenant Col. Paul Tibbets. She's seen here sitting in the pilot's seat of a Martin B-26 Marauder, which she flew expertly during WWII along with aircraft that towed aerial targets.
After the war, Miss Gardner worked as a test pilot and with General Textile Mills to design and implement aircraft parachutes.  She participated in at least two test flights with the experimental chute in December 1945. During both tests, she was forced to bail out of the aircraft when the parachute became tangled in the test aircraft. During the second incident, the aircraft entered a dive when its elevators were jammed by the parachute; Miss Gardner managed to escape from the cockpit and was only 500 feet from the ground when her own parachute opened.
In 2009, WASP pilots were awarded a Congressional Gold Medal through a unit citation.
The heroic Miss Gardner passed away in December 2011 in Manhattan, New York at the age of 90.

1943 11 26 Wolfpack - Robert Taylor
Captain Walker “Bud” Mahurin in formation with P-47 Thunderbolts of the 56th Fighter Group – “The Wolfpack”, climbs out through majestic clouds high above the east coast of England as they prepare to escort B-24 Liberators of the 392nd Bomb Group on a mission to the German port of Bremen, 26 November, 1943. A tough battle with the Luftwaffe lies ahead, but today the escorting “Wolfpack” will claim an ETO record, destroying more enemy aircraft in a day than any other fighter group and Mahurin will add three more victories to his tally, to become the leading Ace in the Group. The bombers have none better to protect them.
