IMAGINARY - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Lionsgate
SYNOPSIS: Max and Jessica decide to move the family back into her childhood home, Jessica’s happy place. Her youngest step daughter Alice finds a stuffed bear named Chauncey behind a small door in the basement. Alice develops an eerie attachment to the stuffed bear and she starts playing games with Chauncey that begin playful but become increasingly sinister. Alice’s behavior becomes increasingly concerning. Jessica attempts to intervene only to realize Chauncey is more than a stuffed toy bear and she is more connected to him than she remembers.
REVIEW: Jeff Wadlow, known for directing films like "Cry Wolf" (2005), "Kick-Ass 2" (2013), and "Truth or Dare" (2018), has released the first of two films this year that delves into the theme of imaginary friends. The screenplay, co-written by the writers who worked on "The Princess and the Frog" (2009) and "Playmobil: The Movie" (2019), blends a mix of genre cliches with a dark childhood tale that feels like it is inspired by "Coraline" (2009). However, the film lacks cohesion and struggles to find its own unique voice, resulting in a jumble of elements that clash with one another.
If you or your children enjoy genre-specific entertainment, "IMAGINARY" falls short in delivering an imaginative supernatural tale and compelling characters. The central location, a house reminiscent of the one in "Poltergeist," lacks the same level of scares or physical manifestations. Alice resembles Carol Ann, Betty Buckley portrays a Tangina-like character, and Veronica Falcón is the new Dr. Lesh.
The narrative marginalizes the father figure, Max, early on as he heads out on a tour, leaving the female characters to confront the supernatural entity on their own. Gloria's explanation of the entity's nature feels superficial, and a later twist involving a character lacks emotional weight.
The three main characters, Jessica, Taylor, and Alice, possess interesting traits but fail to engage the audience. There's an aspect to them that evokes a Hallmark Channel's foray into Halloween-themed movies. The story appears to target a broad audience but fails to resonate with any specific age group or demographic.
While the casting is admirable, the performances are constrained by the material, limiting their potential impact. Actress DeWanda Wise consistently portrays an upbeat and cheery demeanor, but her lack of a poker face in the third act's surprise reveal undermines its effectiveness. Taegen Burns and Pyper Braun deliver solid performances, yet I failed to experience any genuine terror or suspense regarding their circumstances. As a fan of Betty Buckley, I found her character lacking essential elements. Her motivations remain unclear, leaving me feeling unsure of her actions and direction at times.
In terms of production, the film combines a dark fairy tale story with a bright sitcom visualization. Chauncey's realm has a dreamlike aesthetic, avoiding a nightmare feel. While other films, such as "Coraline," targeted at children, have embraced darker and more menacing themes, this film maintains a more lighthearted tone. The character of Jessica, an author/illustrator of children's books, creates a spider and a centipede that visually resemble the characters in "Coraline." The costumes contribute to the sitcom vibe. Chauncey's design resembles a furry version of a creature from "Five Nights at Freddy's." While some younger viewers may find certain visual and special effects frightening, those accustomed to computer games will have likely encountered more terrifying visuals, such as those in "Limbo" and "The Little Nightmare" series. The score incorporates numerous movements that pay homage to other genre film scores, and the end credits feature a Chauncey song with lyrics reminiscent of the "Nightmare on Elm Street" musical nursery rhyme.
IMAGINARY, while an intriguing concept, falls short due to its over-reliance on predictable cliches, resulting in a story that lacks genuine audience connection. Despite the efforts of the cast and director Jeff Wadlow's previous successes, this film unfortunately misses the mark, feeling more like an uninspired homage than a compelling, frightening narrative.

Beasts Part 15
Universe Masterlist
I stare at Orsin’s body lying atop the pyre, fighting back the tears threatening to spill down my cheeks. Bayley slowly lowers herself beside me, Ember plopping down on my other side. I cringe away from their hands reaching for me. No, this pain is all mine, not to be shared with the pack.
“Tala,” Bayley sighs, stopping as Pete and Konnor break through the clearing. Pete meets my eyes before shaking his head. He slinks to Bayley, kneeling to kiss her before turning to me again. “I’m sorry, Tala.”
“You’ll keep looking,” I sniff.
He nods and I feel Bayley’s anxiety crank up a few notches.
“Stay safe. Don’t take any risks. You have a family now.”
His eyes meet mine momentarily before reaching out to press his fingertips to the outside of my wrist.
“Don’t,” I whisper as his fingers wraps around me.
“You’re my family Tala,” he whispers. “Your pain is…” The growl that interrupts his sentence tells me it’s not Konnor settling behind me a second before Braun’s scent surrounds me.
“Don’t,” I sigh. “He’s not worth it, Pete.”
“Tala,” Braun whispers and Pete growls again.
“Do not touch ‘er.”
“She is my wife, Boy.”
“Do not call him Boy, Braun,” I grumble. I open my mouth to say something nastier but can’t bring myself to do it. “I’m fine, Pete,” I state instead. Ursula appears between Pete and I, her hand resting on Pete’s shoulder momentarily before seating herself in my lap. I wrap my arms around the girl burying my face in her hair. “I’m sorry, Little Bear,” I whisper.
Her hands cover mine; her shoulders shake in silent tears. One of Braun’s hands cover both of ours and I can’t fight my tears anymore. I tighten my arms around Ursula.
“Stop your blubbering,” Ursinus mutters as he passes.
“Yes, let’s not grieve the death of a family member. How disgraceful.”
“Muzzle your mutt, Braun.”
“Or what,” I snap, my anger overcoming my brain telling me to stay quiet.
Ursinus glares at me from the corner of his eye.
“He would never threaten a royal member in public,” Braun states. “He saves that for behind closed doors.”
His father’s eyes jump to him. “Your sway over my heir is still strong, Mutt. Don’t you worry.”
Standing I meet the Ursinus’ eyes squarely. “Why aren’t you grieving your grandson? Are you really this heartless, old man?”
“Aunt Tala?”
“Go sit with your father, Little Bear.”
“That is not…”
“I have paperwork that says otherwise. I say otherwise.”
“What you say…”
“I am still the Ursus,” I interrupt. “So by your own laws what I say does matter. And it will continue to matter.” I lower my voice so the older man is the only one who can hear. “At least until you can succeed at killing me.” Turning to face the gathering crowd, “This night is not about me and the Ursinus’ distaste for one another. I apologize to all that is grieving for our lost Ursavus and will remove myself to prevent further spectacle. Please send my nephew off with love and honor and then anyone willing can grieve with the pack in the newly finished Omnis. Although I was hoping for a happier occasion to christen the new building.”
“Tyler?”
“Yes, Sigma?”
“I need you to go to the armory and then meet me in the dungeons.”
“Tala, do you really…”
“He killed my cub, Tyler.”
“No he didn’t.”
“He knows who did though and I’m going to get my answers.”
“Yes, Sigma.”
X
“On your feet Ziggler,” Neville states as I enter the dungeon, Tyler and Pete at my back.
“If it isn’t the little wolf,” the man smirks, rising. “What do I owe the pleasure?”
“Who do you work for,” I ask calmly.
“Oh, you think it’s just going to be that easy? You come in, bat your little eyes at me, and I spill everything.”
“No,” I return the smirk. “You will give me the information I want and I will consider letting you live.”
“Are you going to sic your little puppies on me? Maybe your love sick bear here?”
“No,” I grin, shoving a bolt up beneath the man’s collarbone.
“You stupid bitch.”
“Royal bitch but not stupid,” I grin, nodding towards the bolt in the man’s hand. “Bears are not the only ones that studied how to kill their enemy. Iron slows your healing does it not?”
“You will pay for this.”
“Not before I get my answers,” I snarl, sinking a claw into the bolt hole.
“You’ll get nothing from me,” he growls.
Curling my finger, I yank my hand back ripping a chunk of flesh and muscle from the man. “Then I will slowly rip the flesh from your body until you bleed to death.” I stab the bolt under his other collarbone. The man screams into my face.
“Sigma.”
I glace back at my Beta, my hand tightening around the bolt in my hand. Thoughts of stabbing the man repeatedly flashing through my head.
“This isn’t you. This is your grief coming out. Don’t.”
“You don’t intimidate me anymore Dolph,” I smile, inserting my claw into the new hole. “In fact, I am a completely different wolf from the meek little thing you dumped water on all those months ago. I suggest you talk and do it fast. I can hear your heartrate stuttering already.” I rip another chunk from the man. “I might consider giving you medical treatment.”
“He’ll kill you,” he snarls, his face pressed against the bars.
“He has failed in every attempt so far. He killed your Ursavus!”
He laughs.
“Sigma,” Tyler shouts in my head again.
I send back the image of Orsin laying riddled with bolts. “Did they show mercy? They overkilled my nephew. Their own royalty.”
“You are better than they are. Your compassion…”
“Is of no use here.”
I stab the man five more times along his torso, sinking my claws into each of the holes.
The man grits his teeth to hold in a scream.
“Last chance, Dolph.”
“He’s a bastard,” he grits.
“Tell me something I don’t know.”
“You dumb cunt. He’s an actual bastard.”
“Braun’s?”
“Braun is too noble to have a bastard running around,” he huffs.
I release my hold on the man and he stumbles backwards.
“Get Chad to look over him,” I order as I’m met with stunned stares from the King’s Guard.
“The Ursinus…”
“Can find me if he has a problem with my actions.”
X
“Sigma,” Tyler yells as I stomp from the Royal Housing, my two companions scurrying to catch up. “Sigma. Tala!”
“What is it Beta.”
“Do you truly believe that was necessary?”
“I’m one step closer to finding who is hunting my family.”
“That is not an answer, Sigma.”
“You have watched the Marrok torture how many wolves to get information. Have you ever batted an eye about that? Have you ever question him?”
“You are not the Marrok.”
“You mean I am not an Alpha and therefore don’t have the right.”
“Tala,” he sighs.
“If you have an issue being under an Omega then you are always free to leave the pack.”
“Listen to ‘im, Tala,” Pete mutters. “Just listen.”
“You have never ruled with violence. Your compassion is what makes your people love you. You begged not to torture that bear that killed your sister-in-law. You are running from the violence now. We know who you are. That was not you. You need to do some searching and remember who you truly are. That is who needs to rule right now. Not a hurt, grieving, vengeful wolf but Ursus Sigma Tala. We don’t need another Marrok. We need you.”
I swallow the lump in my throat. “Go make sure the house is ready for our guests tonight, Tyler.”
“Tala,” Pete mumbles as I stare off into the wood line.
“Yeah?”
“Are you…”
“Not in the slightest.”
“Can I…”
I throw myself against his chest, my bloody hand held carefully away from him, as the sobs bubble out. “I hurt so much. I’ve been hurting this entire pregnancy from the moment that I walked away from Braun. I can’t make it stop Pete. I just want it to stop.”
His arms wrap tentatively around my shoulders. “It will take time, Tala. More time than yer willing to give it,” he chuckles.
“You don’t know.”
“Yea I do. I also know that ye will eventually heal. Heal completely. Ye just be cantankerous the whole time.”
“Look who’s talking.”
“Love changes people.”
“Ick, love. Tried that. Don’t recommend.”
“There’s more than one kinda love. You changed me too, Tala. I’ll grudgingly admit that Konnor and Trent did too but…” he releases a sigh. “Mostly it was my wolves.”
“Yeah, I love you too, Grumpy.”
“I know,” he chuckles, tightening his grip before releasing me. “Ye need to get cleaned up, Ursus.”
“Tyler was right, thank you for making me listen.”
“I won’t tell ‘im if you don’t,” he smiles.
“You’re scary when you smile,” I grin, turning towards the Packhouse. “You should do it more often.”
