Build: Fit, but only in the way that matches her preconceived notions of feminine beauty. Azimbayar seems to wear well warm Xaela robes and imported Othard silks, bringing out a feminine frame in all but the bulkiest and most conservative of fabrics.

Distinguishing Marks: Pronounced dark violet scales that ring her jaw and run down her arms and back. Between this natural armoring, tattoos of steppe deer in repose and yols swooping down on them, sometimes touched up with golden ink for more contrast with her skin. 

Common Appearance: Even when at her most practically-dressed, Azimbayar seeks to live up to her namesake by wearing the most tasteful and elegant of shining silks, or accenting more drab outfits with rings of fur or precious metals. She sometimes deigns to wear Eorzean designs out of curious whim, but even in this is known to flash a little extra gil to set herself apart from other, more mercenary Xaela visitors. As a woman trained to fight from horseback and earning her place as a warrior, too, it is not uncommon to see her adorned in golden scales quartered with Hingan silks when expecting trouble; one can expect a similar level of devotion to her appearance even in the most fraught of battlefields.

Traveling Singer: Azimbayar takes interest not only in the collection of Xaelan romance and songs, but performing them for just about anyone. Her personal ger doubles as a performance space, already having attracted curious travelers all over the steppe between the Dawn Throne and Reunion. Eorzea has likewise played host to her musical and storytelling talents. Really, as long as she’s getting attention, it doesn’t matter how much cultural nuance her audience understands.

Steppe “Scholar”/Emissary: Hoping to establish the Xaela tribes’ rightful place in the world, and her own tribe’s leadership over them, Azimbayar eagerly collects stories from all over the Azim Steppes to create a lasting compendium. The search for new stories is hardly professional, more based on her ever-changing passions than anything else. This means she’ll just as swiftly follow stories that take place out of the steppes, or even Othard, in the hopes of composing a new romance off the deeds of others.

An Adventure to Remember: It is only right and proper for a young woman of the steppe to go off and find her own glory, after all. Despite being fairly independently wealthy, adventuring work isn’t beyond her ken. And the potential for excitement outside the borders of her world is too much to pass up!

ROUTE START: With a flourish, the traveling performer whips the bow off her morin khuur. Her unusually mature voice rings out the final note, urging silence from the crowd. The slow crescendo of shy approval afterwards dims as her eyes, closed for so long as she played and sang, open on yours. Her bright gold limbal rings can’t help but glare at you. “If you insist on staring at me, at least say something!” The challenge is only somewhat softened by her teasing smile.

ROUTE SWITCH: A twitch. A brief hurt look, and then a huff as Azimbayar jerks her head to the side, teeth bared. “Tch, of course–” She stops herself and side-eyes you. “Oh, don’t make me laugh! As though I would ever consider–just–go!” She turns fully away. As you leave, you think you can hear her muffle a frustrated scream.

MENU INTERFACE, POKE A: She flicks her gaze to you, looking distracted. “Hm?”

MENU INTERFACE, POKE B: She smirks, interested now. “Hmmm?”

MENU INTERFACE, POKE (REPEATEDLY): Her smile drops. “H-hey! Stop! Stop stop stopstopstop that!”

What is/was your character’s relationship with their father like?

Azimbayar’s father was a master horse breeder among the Noykin who basically upends the local economy wherever he takes his herd. His wealth is measured not in coin, but the sheer size of grazing land he demands and the train of migratory workers who depend on his patronage. He could have started a new tribe all his own, but decided to trade a little bit of his freedom for status and found a bride dwelling on the Dawn Throne.

He is an ambitious man, not cruel but certainly callous at times, more concerned with numbers and favors than people’s day-to-day needs. Ever since his daughter came of age he has sought a match for her, only delaying with the brief hope that she might soon become Khatun. He aggressively pushed for her excellence in all the pursuits of a high class tribeswoman, wanting her to mimic the demure ladies of Yangxia but accepting her skills in riding and combat as natural for any Xaela tribeswoman. Yet his interest in his daughter’s life was never anything more than utilitarian; every hint of closeness, nothing more than a carrot on the end of her mother’s stick. Even separated by an ocean and a continent from him, she alternates between wishing to do well for his legacy and resenting his very existence.

Is your character preoccupied with money or material possession? Why or why not?

Material possessions are inconsequential to Azimbayar in much the same way they seem immaterial to any young person lucky enough to have too much without ever fearing its absence. In truth she would be devastated by the loss of her personal effects, her horse, her wealth. That said, she genuinely seeks out experiences and people over personal enrichment. There is much she would willingly give away, but little that she could bear losing. Everything around her has “sentimental value.”

Which does your character idealize most: happiness or success?

Viewing herself as largely successful anyway, Azimbayar feels she has little to prove. Good experiences are what she seeks out, along with amusing relationships with people whom she can leave guessing. She is not totally without ambition, though, nor the drive to see her dreams through with some sacrifice. But she is confident that her natural talents can see her through any obstacle, along with those of the people she’s charmed along the way. “Success” would rank higher than fleeting feelings, if she was asked directly, but how willing is she to commit to any hardship?

What is your character’s biggest relationship flaw? Has this flaw destroyed relationships for them before?

Azimbayar plays games with her partners both platonic and romantic, but doesn’t expect to be played back. She is easily inspired to jealousy, but craves attention and flirts incessantly. She is constant in her affection, but inconsistent in execution. Azimbayar is fairly childish and self-centered, is somewhat aware of this, and still considers it the other’s problem. 

Unfortunately for any relationship running deep enough to inspire the young warrior-singer to do better, she has intimate knowledge with the trappings of romance and romantic tragedy without any of the real experience. Real, loving relationships that fail to match her stories are just plain confusing. Certainly she has damaged, if not totally broken, previous friendships only to walk away annoyed.

In what ways does your character compare themselves to others? Do they do this for the sake of self-validation, or self-criticism?

Inferiority is an emotion not often felt anymore by Azimbayar. She found her talents, thought of them as being on the better and more visible side, and took to perfecting them in ways that suited a proper beloved daughter of Azim. Women like Sokhatai are forces of nature who perform a certain task to the level of high art. People like her are far better to observe and cultivate than fruitlessly compare oneself to, but others are competition, opportunities for Azimbayar to show her superiority.

– ten  /  INSPIRATION FOR MUSE. If you want to know anything about me, let it be this: I’m a sucker for any steppe/nomad culture in any fictional world you give me. I didn’t roll a Xaela though until I went to the Azim Steppes in Stormblood and saw how much the developers gave a damn about this one-off zone and the peoples who live there. But beyond that, I’m also a sucker for writing characters from less advanced/more tribalistic backrounds, questioning the idea that modernity is progressive and everything else conservative/barbaric. But these are also societies in transition: not static, but dynamic, about to enter a new age. Bayaa doesn’t strictly follow the ways of her parents and ancestors, but enacts these changes precisely because her beliefs derive from theirs. The look of Azimbayar herself comes from this Chinese propaganda poster where all the ethnic minorities are shown as these cute girls with giant smiles. I saw one of a Mongolian, Tajik, or maybe Uyghur girl and thought “she looks kind of smug. I bet she thinks she’s the prettiest/coolest/smartest girl in the camp. And I bet her tribe is fairly rich.” It sort of all fell together after that. 

- eleven / GOD KNOWS WHERE IT WENT. I don’t know why the question is framed this way and that’s almost upsetting me too much to answer it based off everyone else’s context clues. But yeah that may be part of the problem. I’m a terrible person and have no discipline and my mind often gets sidetracked with minor details. I’m also very anxious and easy to upset, which makes it even easier to lose track of what I’m doing. And depression has slowly destroyed what remains of my memory over the past 8 or so years.
