Whoever convinced me that kimi ni todoke is a happy-go-lucky series should have seen my utter despair when I learned that Ayane and Kento break up in the manga.

While I am for hunting down any mangaka that still (or has ever) promoted student x teacher and age gap ships in general I think the Karuho Shiina approach is objectively way funnier.

Basically Karuho had Ayane and Pin be the leftover main characters among the already established 2 couples. While I cannot say she didn't write some jokes into the manga related to the nature of their relationship, it wasn't until the last few arcs that there was any (strictly one sided from the student's side) romance happening.

You'd have to know that at this point people were so invested in them. The biggest KNT fans posting constant updates, translations and paid content were big Ayane x Pin fans. But in general the fandom was so interested in their development and they were satisfied with even with the tiniest of crumbs. Sawako and Shouta had been dating for a year and Chizuru and Ryu had just resolved their issues and gotten together after so long. Ayane had also just broken up with Kento so naturally the next course of action would be finally setting sail to the 'implied from the start' Pin x Ayane ship.

You know the joke that goes 'x has the opportunity to do the funniest thing ever'?

Well Karuho Shiina had the opportunity to do the funniest thing ever. And she did exactly that.

After years of build up and theorizing from the fandom the teacher x student ended the way any ship of that nature should end: the older teacher rejected the younger student and made it clear that it's impossible for him to view her as anything other than a student, a kid he essentially spent 3 years watching grow into an adult. No 'if i wasn't your teacher' or 'maybe in the future'. Even before that, 27 year old Pin made it clear that he's strictly dating women his age and even a 20 year old is considered too young for him.

I will say I still have my doubts about whether that was Karuho's plan from the start or if it's a decision she came to as she saw the way the series progressed. But considering her old works mostly condemned or damned age gap relationships, it's not impossible that this was her initial plan when she started the series in 2006 (a stance impossible to find in any other manga at the time) and not some grand revelation that came to her while writing in the 2010s.

I love the frenemies to lovers trope in manga and anime. They always bicker with each other and it's actually comedy like it is funny and doesn't make me very sad. But they are not that close friends or enemies. Like if it's friends to lovers then there is so much confusion and fear of losing the friendship but since they are kinda enemies and be like f**k you I don't actually care about you ( they do more than you will ever know). We see them being their best partner in crime and how they motivate each other in tough times. It's not typical shy guy x shy girl or grumpy sunshine. They are always on the same level in terms of bickering or fighting. But they also surprisingly care about each other. Then one of them realizes they have feelings for the other. I have seen or read some mainly the girls fall first and the boy realizes later( Risa and Otani lovely complex)( Shikamaru and Temari idk the details but it looked like Temari caught feelings first) ( Ayane and Pin) ( Hanako and Kabakura) I haven't watched or read all about Naruto so I'm not sure about the details. But in Kimi ni todoke and Lovely complex I have seen the girls reacting to their feelings first. If I'm right Hanako from Wotakoi also looked emotional over Kabakura losing the match. They all were more or less aware that they had fallen in love . I love when they are kind of confused and sad about thinking whether the boy/guy they were constantly fighting has the same feelings or not. The boy/guy kinda don't understand it at first but once they realize they are also blushing and shy around them ughhhh. They can't make eye contact easily 😫. Also in some cases we can see them getting jealous while seeing their frenemy with other guy ughhhh 😫. I love these moments. I just wanted to mention these tropes however I don't like how Otani treats Risa I wish he was written well. Sometimes Kabakura was also harsh towards Koyanagi Hanako but I think he changes his attitudes in the manga later. I will read wotakoi someday. I just had some sort of excessive love for frenemies to lovers. I couldn't understand at first but tried to write down the reasons. Probably the reason I like Ayapin too. Oh how I wish circumstances were different for them.

ahh this was Very difficult, yeah. thanks for giving me some food for thought :’) my main qualifier for being a blorbo worthy of this list is ‘i have written fic about them at least once’, and this still disqualifies some real painful exclusions, like may pokemon or maybe eowyn lotr (among the earliest possible blorbo candidates) and solaire dark souls and dorian dragon age. also no redacted characters are on this list bc the real answer wouldve been ivy or maybe jessamine, and i was not including OCs

But alas... That's all just in my mind. The worst part about the ending is that we never get to see these two together again. Or get to know how their relationship progressed or what even happened later. We never got a proper closure and that's what kills me the most. Hell I even wanted to see Ryuu and Chizuru's marriage. I really wanted to see Pin and Ayane together...These two are one of my favorite shoujo couple and UGGGHHHH! I wanted to see more of them! T_T

Akk has had a visceral reaction to Ayan's touch. He jerks. He resists. He pushes.

However, most of Ayan's touches are threats in themselves and come when least expected.

You punch me once. I kiss you once.

The only moments Akk has allowed Ayan to touch him for an extended period is when Ayan helps him... with his prefect pin, the symbol of rule and order.

The first time, Ayan attempts to fix the pin because it isn't straight. The second time, Ayan uses his lighter to sanitize the pin; then, he proceeds to remove Akk's splinter.

For the symbol of law to not be straight and needing sanitization is saying something in itself, but then to use it to remove a small nuisance that if left unchecked will burrow deep and fester resulting in catastrophic consquences is symbolic of the help Ayan provides Akk.

Akk's secrets and pain are splinters in his soul that he has tried to bury by following the rules and staying in control, but he doesn't realize that the rules he hides behind are crooked and dirty, and if he continues to use them, instead of helping him, they will lead to his destruction.

When you're exhausted, you're pretty cute.

Unlike every other drama that uses a fake sleep to elicit a confession, when Akk opened his eyes after Ayan's confession, Ayan didn't shy away from what he said. He wasn't ashamed about admitting he finds Akk attractive. He wasn't scared.

He was happy that Akk heard it.

These two have been orbiting around each other in their never-ending cat and mouse game, but here, both are silent, mesmerized, and unmoving observing each other in a moment of truth they aren't afforded in the noise of the school.

Akk isn't scared. He doesn't resist. He doesn't jerk. He doesn't push.

Much like with the prefect pin, Ayan's touch here is to help not to harm. However, Akk now has time to examine the other instances where Ayan has helped him by putting on his seatbelt and leading him to the car when he knew Akk was hesitate. He now has time to see who is in control.

And that DOES scare Akk.

When Akk finally does move, it is swift as if he is trying desperately to keep from falling, jolting himself awake out of the trance he has been in for the past twenty seconds. He even looks around in attempt to center himself.

And the first thing he demands is that Ayan tell him what he is doing to him. Not what he has done to him. Not what he did to him. No. What he is doing to him. Continuously. Persistently. Relentlessly. Because now Akk sees it. He sees that Ayan is changing him, but he doesn't know how he is doing it. He doesn't know when Ayan seeped into his thoughts, but now he realizes that when the world is reduced to just the two of them, he likes it, and with that, he realizes he is no longer in control. So he runs... right to Kan, his plan of escape, who is fighting his own battle of resistance, but he only goes so far because the last scene of the episode is them, together, practicing.

In judo, an ippon is a perfect point and happens when one subdues his opponent on his back for at least twenty seconds. The move has to be controlled and swift, but the hold has to be strong and lingering.

In the past, Akk has attempted this move, but failed in pinning Ayan down for the required amount of time due to him resisting Ayan's touch, a touch that is against the rules and was meant as a threat.

However, in this attempt, the pin, as shown in the episode, lasts twenty seconds.

In executing this winning move, Akk shows control, and unlike his last attempt, Ayan doesn't touch, so Akk doesn't jerk. He doesn't push. He doesn't run.

They observe, unscathed.

They are so perfect. I really wish they will end up together somehow in the future. Their age gap is not even that bad. Plus, we all know Pin is pretty childish for his age, while Ayane is the "mature" one. I find it fabulous. Their relationship WILL. WORK. And I'm like hi, she graduates high school in like 2 days. Lets go.
