Chris Verayo
Artist Statement
“Always search inward never outward” that is what I always say. This way I always present a sneak peak into my mind and through painting I extract ideas, thoughts, and emotions. They are like windows opening into a world of movement constantly pushing, glowing, and tugging.
My artworks often find its way towards making a reveal. These revealed images created using a repurposed technique of action painting controlled by ideally holding on tight on a concept and using it as a guide to make its way despite the chaos of dribbling, showering, and splatting of paint. Whether I do landscapes, portraits, still life, or whatever it is that can contribute on a theme or concept, my work always feel like it has a life of its own, decisions of its own, sentiments of its own.
The work sometimes answers my prayers. It sometimes translate as omens. It reminds me of my shortcomings. It gives me a sense of bliss.
I never see them again during victories.
My children.
My hope.
Biography:
Born in Manila Philippines, Chris Verayo is a graduate of The Philippine Women’s University with a bachelor's degree in Advertising from the School of Fine Arts and Design. He is part of the team from his school that placed 2nd in the 2009 Ayala Greenology Eco-Art Installation Art interschool competition. He is also a finalist in the 42nd Shell National Student Art Competition in the same year. His imagery for the Instrumental Metal Band “Jeebus” Album entitled “2005-2015” landed as the Philippine’s best album cover for the year 2015. He exhibits at galleries and artist run spaces around Metro Manila.
Mainly working on paintings, his technique is a composed and repurposed style of action painting. His themes usually depict the mental and emotional mapping of his memory working hand in hand with the evolution of his adopted but somewhat composed and repurposed technique. Usually driven by emotion, he creates a conversation with his work during the process of painting. Most of his work is a cross between the abstract and figurative.

From sculptures to paintings to installations, the artworks from the various galleries showcase the ingenuity, creativity, hopes, dreams and fears of the artists tackling different topics –from culture to mental health to government. This year’s Art Fair is truly an upgrade.
And for the first time, a new section dedicated to photography .
More than ever, photography—or visual documentation—plays an essential role in our collective narrative. It’s what binds us to discover that the more we portray ourselves as different, the more we are actually alike as a people. So essential is photography in our daily existence that it has generally been relegated as nothing more than a practical platform. Cameras are easily accessible. Anyone can take pictures with a mobile phone or gadget and share the moment on social media.
The brand new section not only sheds light on the importance of photography as an art form and as a form of storytelling, but it also gives viewers the chance to appreciate the work of some of the most talented photographers the world has seen. There is the Weegee exhibit, and right next to it is "Kin," an exhibit featuring the works of editorial and fine art photographer Neal Oshima. In "Kin," Neal traces the connections between humans from different tribes in stunning black and white photographs of indigenous people from various areas in the country.
The Art Fair's photo section also showcases the work of several photojournalists, including Carlo Gabuco, who has been documenting the victims of the Duterte administration's war on drugs – both the casualties and the families they leave behind. Carlo's work, which can be found in the documentary photography segment of the photo exhibit, as well as in the multimedia exhibit, "Everyday Impunity" – depicts the drug war with a determined honesty, capturing moments of grief, sadness, and power from the most unique angles.

The Link Ayala Center car park building, with a floor area of more than 13,000 sqm over four floors, has been transformed into a multi-level exhibition space and a world imagined, invented, or recreated to mirror reality.
The fair aims to mirror the vibrant local art scene and continue to generate support for Filipino art practitioners. Set in an alternative urban venue, Art Fair Philippines makes art accessible to enthusiasts and to those who want to discover one of Southeast Asia’s most exciting art landscapes. One of the missions of Art Fair Philippines is to develop audiences for contemporary art. ArtFairPH/Talks presents daily talks curated in partnership with Ateneo Art Gallery and Museum Foundation of the Philippines. Talks are categorized into Art Practices, ArtWorlds, Directions in Contemporary Art and Philippine Contemporary Art: In Museums, Biennials and the Community.

Museums play a big role in reminding us of how we grow as people. Through arts, installations, and precious artifacts, they awaken our desire to know more about our rich culture, our history, and our environment, which make up our national identity.
When I’m a grade 11 student it is my first time going to the National Museum of the Philippines because of my teacher. It’s located in Padre Burgos Ave, Ermita, Manila, 1000 Metro Manila, there is 3 Museum here in manila, namely; Museum of Anthropology, Museum of Fine Arts, and lastly Museum of Natural History.
Last Saturday, we went to manila to visit the Museum. Since it is free to access, we went there earlier so we can explore the Museum and visit its other divisions and vice verse.

The first Museum that we visit is The National Museum of Fine Arts, Trivia, The National Museum of Fine Arts, is the Old Congress Building designed by Daniel Burnham. This proud museum contains many of the Philippines’ signature works of art, including Juan Luna’s seminal Spoliarium, a colossal painting that provides harsh commentary on Spanish rule. Other paintings in the Museum.
El Asesinato del Gobernador Bustamante (The Assassination of Governor Bustamante) by Felix Resurrection Hidalgo - Hidalgo highlights the dramatic event with the use of bold color, dramatic lighting and dynamic movement. Fearing that the artwork would spark controversy, Hidalgo never showcased it in Barcelona. He later won a silver medal for it at the 1905 St. Louis Exposition in Missouri.
Relief carvings in the Senate Hall of the Old Legislative Building by Isabelo Tampingco - His talent in creating lifelike figures and decorative carvings that incorporated Philippine motifs, especially the anahaw leaf, was not a surprise, as he was a descendant of Chinese sculptors based in Binondo.
Planting of the First Cross by Vicente S. Manansala - his picture represents one of the most significant events in Philippine history: the 1521 planting of a cross in Cebu by the Portuguese explorer, Ferdinand.

The second Museum that we visit is The National Museum of Natural History, Trivia, The National Museum of Natural Science was constructed as the Agriculture and Commerce Building in 1940. It was designed in a neoclassical style by Filipino Architect Antonio Toledo in the late 1930s. The newly opened museum displays mostly new material and even old material that has not been on display since the early 1990s. Here are some of them.
Lolong’s skin and skeleton - Lolong was the largest crocodile in captivity, and at the museum, you can see just how large he was exactly. His skeleton is suspended from the ceiling of the building’s Ayala Reception Hall on the second floor, while a replica of his figure is on display near the upper entrance.
Botanical illustrations and paintings - A temporary exhibit on the pioneer naturalists of the Philippines showcases the botanical sketches of early naturalists
lets preserved our culture so that the other generation will see how we lived and learn and educate them to love our own culture and traditions.

THE FIRST FONT NAMED AFTER A FILIPINO IS HERE

The Philippines is oozing with widely-acclaimed, iconic artworks. But ask almost anyone on the street, and they’ll struggle to name the artists behind many obra maestras.

Enter Obra Typeface, an initiative by J. Walter Thompson Philippines and Ayala Museum, which aims to familiarize Filipinos with National Artists by using something everyone is familiar with—typefaces.

As its first foray, the team crafted a display type, the Imao Obra Typeface or Imao.otf, inspired by the works of National Artist Abdulmari Asia Imao. The project was launched on May 6, 2019 with an exhibition dedicated to the Imao Obra Typeface at the Ayala Museum.
A native of Sulu, Abdulmari Asia Imao made his mark in Philippine art through his use of Tausug and Maranao motifs. He was awarded the honor of Philippine National Artist in 2006. Imao’s trademark icons—the sarimanok, okir, and naga motifs - were integrated into every typeface character, creating a rich tapestry of letters and images.
The aim of combining the artworks and the artist’s name into the typeface is to make it easier for people to remember the person behind the masterpieces.

Part of the exhibition is a special showcase of everyday items designed with the Imao Obra Typeface. Artists and designers were tasked to translate the typefaces into merchandise such as shirts, jackets, hats, shoes, bags, and even home items like pots, lamps, spray can centerpieces, and a chair. Collaborators in this project include Abre Linea, Aranaz, Artwork, Boyet Custodio, Drin Alejandro, Femi Cachola, Fine Time Studios, Geoff Estevez, Jappy Agoncillo, Joco Comendador, Kenneth Tan, Pako.ph, Renan Pacson, Support Your Friends, Wanderskye and Drea Dizon, Leeroy New, Ibarra Watches, and WSH.

A merger of different art forms, united together by a singular typeface. One inspired by an artist who aimed to unite Filipinos of all creeds and culture.
The Imao Obra Typeface exhibition is free to the public and will be on view until May 30, 2019 at the 2F of the Ayala Museum. The Imao Obra Typeface or the Imao.OTF is free to use and free to download online at www.obratypeface.com

Francisco V. Coching's Masterpieces Being Showcased at SM Aura in Taguig
February 19, 2019, An art exhibit was launched in SM Aura as tribute to the Dean of Filipino Illustrators, Francisco V. Coching. His profound love for comics and arts brought him to be entitled as "The King of Komiks".
His works are being showcased at SM Aura in Taguig from February 19-February 24, 2019. During the launch, a ribbon CUTTING was held graced by the VIP guests together with his grandson Francisco Cookie Conching III.

He was recognized as Philippine National Artist for Visual Arts in June 2014 for giving form, in words and artwork, to the complex mix of mythology, romance, human drama, legends and heroes that somehow developed the visual consciousness of the ordinary Filipinos from the 1940s up to his retirement in 1973.

His works are known from past generations up to present time. A lot of characters made by him are still known and famous up to this date. Some of these are Pedro Penduko, Sabas ang Barbero and a lot more.
He mesmerized readers with his ink and brush drawings. Fine fluid lines, dramatic compositions and unusual perspectives are the hallmarks of a Coching artwork. He was a master storyteller, who created plots simmering with action, adventure and fantasy. Almost all of his sixty-some serialized novels were made into popular movies. It is believed that Coching's komiks helped promote the national language in the country.
Coching succeeded in bridging the gap between fine art and popular art. He initiated aspiing artists into comics ilustration, in fact, his art styłe is still being emulated by countless artists in contemporary art, painting and animation.
In celebration of F. V. Coching's centennial year in 2019, Ayala Foundation, Inc. and The National Commission for Culture and the Arts co-sponsored an exhibition of his works at the Ayala Museum from October 30, 2018 to February 3, 2019. The tribute continues with another exhibit scheduled at the Pasig Museum during the second quarter of 2019, with an exhibition tour of major nilippir cities being planned simultaneously.

The top nine reasons to visit Houston in 2019
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/3c3327ade0a579ef77a061bcb628f211/48d2091c5e0bf3b4-09/s75x75_c1/cbce766e1d17215f82d64efe765f0ef21d6a82a6.jpg)
(CNN) — From its integral role in the world’s first moon landing 50 years ago this July to a new lineup of appealing options in the arts and culinary scenes, Houston has never been more ripe for exploration.
It wins in the aesthetics department, too: The much-photographed skyline is dotted with skyscrapers in architectural styles ranging from Art Deco to minimalist, and this city of more than 2.3 million residents — the country’s fourth largest — has countless green spaces and parks for running, biking or simply unwinding under the big Texas sky.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/3c3327ade0a579ef77a061bcb628f211/48d2091c5e0bf3b4-09/s75x75_c1/cbce766e1d17215f82d64efe765f0ef21d6a82a6.jpg)
The downtown Houston skyline is dotted with skyscrapers in a variety of architectural styles.
Visit Houston
While the greater Houston area is sprawling, many of the top travel attractions are concentrated in downtown. Tourists can get around this part of town by relying on the efficient Metro Rail system, but they’ll need a car to venture farther afield.
Coupled with its remarkable turnaround from 2017’s Hurricane Harvey, which caused an estimated $1.5 billion worth of damage to the city and forced thousands to be evacuated, Houston is hands down a must-visit destination this year.
Here’s what to do when you go to Houston with nine of its biggest travel draws:
Space
Space Center Houston
Situated in the Greater Houston area, this 250,000-square-foot homage to all things space should be at the top of the list for every tourist. “Visit Space Center Houston to experience the heart of human space exploration,” says William T. Harris, its president and CEO.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/46932e6a349286dbbbfd524e854ce2e1/48d2091c5e0bf3b4-73/s75x75_c1/2c4ec8a6951fb4ab3203771909946b78a56b96f1.jpg)
Space Center Houston is one of the city’s premier attractions. Visitors can easily spend half a day exploring the space-related artifacts and more.
Courtesy Space Center Houston
The Space Center Houston is also the official visitor’s center for the NASA Johnson Space Center, located across the street and home to the Mission Control Room, from which Apollo 11 — that incredible moon landing — and other missions were monitored.
Space Center Houston admission is $29.95 and includes a tram tour to see Johnson Space Center. It’s easy to pass a half day or more here. Space Center Houston has an impressive collection of space-related artifacts including multiple flown spacecrafts such as the Apollo 17 command module, used in the last manned mission to the moon in 1972. The center also has the world’s largest collection of moon rocks on public display.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/475c01c2a264173fd994310c9240e384/48d2091c5e0bf3b4-20/s75x75_c1/055aebff0cdf528bec182abf4ffd4e47f22154f4.jpg)
Johnson’s Space Center Mission Control Room is being restored and wil be open to the public in July 2019.
NASA
Johnson Space Center, a National Historic Landmark, is undergoing a restoration of the Mission Control Room. When the restored room reopens in July, visitors will be able to see the room exactly as it was during Apollo 11, complete with the illuminated black-and-white screens on the control room consoles displaying video from the world-famous mission. On display will be the actual consoles that flight controllers used to monitor the moon landing.
Space City Month
In July, Houston will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 with a series of events around town. Space Center Houston is hosting a variety of Apollo-themed events, including a Thought Leader Series where NASA experts will talk about the historic feats of the Apollo era and the future of human space exploration. The Space Center will also host a “Space On-Screen” film series showing space-related films.
On July 20, the day of the actual moon landing, the center will be open for extended hours and have a packed schedule of events during the day and throughout the evening.
While details are still being worked out, various venues in the city are also hosting events for Space City Month, according to Leah Shah, a representative from Visit Houston. A few restaurants and bars are expected to offer space-themed cocktails and food menus.
The arts
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/d5dfe892f1c5955ae9401933dff7d9dc/48d2091c5e0bf3b4-c4/s75x75_c1/ee0e6c93c771c7bfde279233acc050bba9053bb5.jpg)
The recently opened Menil Drawing Insitute claims to be the world’s first freestanding building dedicated to modern and contemporary drawings.
Richard Barnes/Menil Collection Houston
Menil Drawing Institute
Part of The Menil Collection, a 30-acre microneighborhood of art within the Montrose neighborhood, Menil Drawing Institute opened in November to much fanfare and has since gotten international acclaim from art world critics and heavy hitters.
It claims to be the world’s first freestanding building dedicated to modern and contemporary drawings, and according to spokesman Tommy Napier, was built for their acquisition, study, exhibition, conservation and storage.
The 30,000-square-foot institute hosts rotating drawing exhibitions, which change every three to four months. Its second exhibition opens February 15 and is dedicated to drawings by Roni Horn, a renowned visual artist who resides and works in New York and Iceland.
Also, the building is as notable as the art inside: Designed by Los Angeles-based architect Johnston Marklee, it’s constructed of white steel and is covered in some parts by cypress trees, giving it an outdoorsy feel. Built around three courtyards lined with lush magnolia and oak trees, it’s not a bad place to while away a couple of hours.
The Menil Collection itself is comprised of a main building with special exhibitions and a diverse permanent collection that includes works by Matisse and Picasso and three other museum buildings: one dedicated to the artist Cy Twombly, another to the artist Dan Flavin and the third to year-long installation works.
Museum of Fine Arts Houston
At a sprawling 14 acres, this museum is the largest cultural institution in the Southwest. Thanks to a $450 million expansion, which will be completed sometime in 2020, it’s going to get even bigger and will include a 164,000-square-foot building for modern and contemporary art.
But travelers don’t need to wait for this project to be finished to make a visit because there’s already plenty of renowned art to see.
The museum’s collection of more than 70,000 objects comes from all world cultures, dating from antiquity to present. There’s plenty of art on display outside of Houston’s museums, too. Case in point is this large mural by graffiti artist GONZO247. Located in downtown Houston, it showcases a few of the things Houston is best known for.
Visit Houston
Holocaust Museum Houston
The nation’s fourth largest Holocaust Museum will more than double in size from, 21,000 to 57,000 square feet, when it reopens on June 22, following a nearly $50 million expansion. It’s going to be the country’s first fully bilingual English and Spanish Holocaust museum and will grow from one to four permanent galleries.
In addition to its already existing Bearing Witness Holocaust gallery, which is full of artifacts from before, during and after the Holocaust (a 1942 railcar that transported Jewish people to concentration camps in Germany is a highlight), a new human rights gallery will have displays of all UN-recognized genocides.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/ed95ae0715477d00528af441bd6e5032/48d2091c5e0bf3b4-62/s75x75_c1/307a2ffbd1064ad664fee1484cf2ad094995f773.jpg)
Following its expansion, the Holocaust Museum Houston will be the country’s fourth-largest Holocaust Museum.

The second new gallery will display artwork by the Holocaust child survivor and painter Samuel Bak, and the third will focus on the writings of 18 young diarists, including Anne Frank, who died in genocides around the world. The museum will also host traveling exhibitions. General admission is $15, but free admission is extended to children and students.
Theater District
This 17-block district in downtown Houston saw heavy flooding from Hurricane Harvey but is now back to its former glory. There are more than a dozen theaters here, ranging from small, independent houses to grand stages. The Wortham Theater Center, home to the Houston Grand Opera and the Houston Ballet, is the largest and has two performing halls: the 2,400-seat Brown Theater and the 1,000-seat Cullen Theater.
No matter the season, the Wortham hosts performances almost daily. One of the most highly anticipated shows this year, held from April 20 to May 5, is Mozart’s “Don Giovanni,” which is a co-production with the prestigious Royal Opera House in London.

Food halls
Food halls are all the rage in Houston. Three are opening this year alone, while a fourth, Finn Hall, opened in December 2018. At 20,000-square-feet, it sits in downtown Houston and is home to 10 restaurants and two bars. All the vendors are locally based, and the choices are diverse. Dish Society, for example, serves farm-to-table American cuisine, such as chicken and biscuits, while Yong serves classic Korean dishes.

Bravery Hall, scheduled to open in February in downtown Houston, will house five chef-driven restaurants and feature a molecular cocktail bar and a spacious patio. Lyric Market, slated for a fall opening, is in Houston’s Theater District and will have restaurants, specialty food purveyors, al fresco dining terraces, a 4,000-square-foot rooftop deck and an underground speakeasy.
Understory at Capitol Tower, a 35,000-square-foot project inside Capitol Tower’s two-story atrium in downtown, is the largest of the food halls and opening this summer. It will house a full-service restaurant, seven chef-driven fast casual spots and a cocktail bar. The hall is connected to the city’s seven-mile underground tunnel system and is expected to be an aesthetic showpiece that has white marble and copper finishes as well as walls with murals painted by local artists.
The Gas station cuisine

Houston’s gas stations aren’t just for fueling up. Many, such as Sunrise Taquito, are actually dining destinations in their own right.
Adrian Samano/Visit Houston
No, we’re not joking here: Houston gets bragging rights for having top-brass gas station cuisine, and more and more notable eateries at gas stations continue to open. While the gas station joint culture has been around for several years, it’s only now getting some national fame. The food is ridiculously tasty and incredibly inexpensive. Don’t try to compare it to standard fast food because the quality is incomparable. On top of which, the portions are huge.
Some highlights include:
— The family-run Sunrise Taquito at a Shell station in Washington Corridor. It serves fresh, made-to-order breakfasts. The chorizo and eggs taquitos, and the various breakfast plates with flour tortillas, refried beans and fried potatoes, are favorites.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/1511bb3b7d5863467d3a68b5bb51c29f/48d2091c5e0bf3b4-3a/s75x75_c1/d96dd3248238d1bcb4d1f0fdd15208876c236312.jpg)
Serving up made-to-order breakfasts (try the chorizo and egg taquitos), Sunrise Taquito is much, much more than a last resort gas station meal.
Adrian Samano/Visit Houston
— Ekko’s Greek Deli at a Valero station in Uptown is a staple for Houston’s Greek immigrants and is known for its gyros, hummus and baklava.
— The Shawarma Stop at a Shell station in the Museum District turns out delicious chicken and beef shawarma stuffed inside a pita and a variety of tender kebabs including ground beef and beef chunks.
The 12 James Beard Award-nominated restaurants
The James Beard awards are the Oscars of the culinary world, and Houston snagged an eyebrow-raising dozen nominations last year.
Travelers should check out at least one of these nationally recognized restaurants when they’re in town, and they’re spoiled for choices.
There’s Xochi, an airy spot in downtown that turns out Oaxacan inspired dishes and was nominated for Best New Restaurant (its chef, Hugo Ortega, won the James Beard for Best Chef in the Southwest in 2017).
For food with an ethnic flair, check out Crawfish & Noodles, serving Cajun and Vietnamese dishes; chef Trong Nguyen was nominated for Best Chef in the Southwest.
If you go:
Although the Greater Houston area has nearly 900 hotels, travelers will have the best access to the city’s highlights by choosing accommodations in one of three main neighborhoods: the Museum District, ideal for culture seekers; downtown, home to top restaurants and nightlife; and the Galleria area, which is a prime shopping destination.
These are only nine of the many reasons to plan a trip to Houston now. Once there, travelers will undoubtedly discover many more to add to the list.

museums r kool
We have to be honest here, there certainly is a stigma looming over museum as they are deemed to be rather uninteresting. As someone who has always shown interest in what museums are able to contribute to the learning capacities of individuals and communities, I think it is about time to re-imagine and rediscover them as melting pots of leisure, exploration and a wide array for acquiring knowledge. So in this blog entry, I specifically looked art art and science museums here in the Philippines that I hope to visit one of these days.
Starting out as Gabinete de Fisica, an observation room of mineral, botanical and biological collections for science courses especially in Medicine and Pharmacy in the 17th century, the University of Santo Tomas Museum, known to be the oldest existing museum in the Philippines boasts of a vast collection. Preserved for over 300 years, the collection expanded to include cultural pieces and artifacts.
Located at the heart of the country’s business district, Makati City, the Ayala Museum is one of the most important and most visited private museums. It houses a large number of rare and priceless cultural and historical items not found elsewhere in the country.
For over 40 years, its handcrafted dioramas of Philippine history scenes have impressed visitors. But the Ayala Museum really has so much more to offer. The Maritime Vessels Collection of finely crafted ship models paying tribute to ancient boats is worth every visit.
This museum is located at Antipolo, Rizal. It has a Greek theme so you will see white color everywhere – walls, bed mattress, pillows, curtains and many more. More important, this place is full of paintings and extraordinary artworks that will make you think twice what’s behind it.
The National Museum, officially the Museum of the Filipino People, in Rizal Park, Manila was originally designed as a public library in 1918 before it was inaugurated on July 16, 1926. In 2003, renovations started to transform it into the National Art Gallery.
The National Museum is the premier institution and repository of the Filipino heritage. Within its walls are National Art Gallery, Planetarium, and the regional museums. This massive museum offers an enriching visual experience for its visitors with its extensive archaeological, anthropological, botanical, geological and zoological artifacts and diverse artworks by local artists.
With all sorts of advancements today, people sometimes yearn to unwind and have a break. What you do to pause for a while and be reminded of simpler days? Visit a museum and go back in time!

Arturo Luz the 7th Philippine National Artist in 1997 Modula 2 National Artist Arturo Luz unveils a one-man exhibition of new abstract sculptures in metal and wood. Minimalist and geometric, this series of works delves into the various configurations of form embodying the themes that Luz has engaged over the years. As a visual artist, Mr. Luz started merging sculpture and abstraction in 1969, veering away from then on in what art critic Dr. Patrick Flores terms as a “critical shift” towards a “feeling for form”. This exhibition of new work on wood and metal likewise points to different trajectories of the abstract. Mr. Luz imbues geometry with physical presence through creating modular forms, grids, cubes and blocks, standing solidly in space. He also indulges in the play of monochromatic surfaces and patterns like Modula 2, denoting a carnivalesque dance of shadow and light. Other objects alternately recall primitivist and prehistoric otems and pay homage to artistic personality associated with the development of abstraction. These contradictions create archetypes and votive markers or both the forgotten past and the contemporary present. From his artwork Modula 2, it is a wooden type of art that is made up ipil tree. From the picture you can see the structure that is questionable and explainable. Based on some of the information that we have read, Modula 2 means the figure of the human body. And from my opinion, all of the elements of arts are present in his artwork: the lines, space, color, value, shape and form. Moreover, Mr. Luz’s Modula 2 is hard to understand, since the structure of it is new and he has its own interpretation and meaning and we have different imagination from his. But truly, behind this artwork it was a meaningful art. Drawing the Line Arturo Luz is a Filipino printmaker, sculptor, designer and founding member of the modern Neo-Realist School in the Philippine art influenced by Modernist painters as Paul Klee, he has worked in a variety of styles and techniques in varying degrees of abstraction to create playful geometric figures and forms. He was born on November 20, 1926 in Manila, the Philippines and went to study at the School of Fine Arts at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, the Art School of the Brooklyn Museum in New York, and at the Académie Grade Chaumière in Paris. In 1976, Luz became founding director of Metropolitan Museum of Manila, a position he held until in 1986. His international shows include the Philippine Cultural Exhibition held in New York in 1953, Arte de America y España in 1963, the 11th São Paolo Biennial in 1971, the Tokyo International Print Bilennial in 1974. In 1997, he was named the National Artist in Visual Arts by the government of his home country. From his artwork Drawing the Line, it is a selfportrait (195) from the collection of Fernando and Catherine at Zoleil de Ayala. From his work, you can see an image of a person that is being sketched in the picture. Although his portrait does not emphasize color, you can still clearly understand the picture. And I can still clearly understand the he properly emphasize the tone of the pencil shading, and the organization of the lines that makes his artwork more attractive and meaningful. In evaluation to the portrait, it will depend on a person’s mental capacity to understand a certain scenario. And from my opinion, all the elements of arts are present in the pictures: the lines, space, color, value, shape and form. Colors doesn’t mean literally since color also pertains to lightness and darkness of a certain environment. The lines are vividly clear, spacing is enough to occupy a emptiness of the picture, the value refers to its lightness and darkness of the shading. The shape and form is the portrait itself, it is clearly understandable that the person in the drawing is sitting. Moreover, Arturo’s works are more on abstract in which what is interpreted in the picture is not quite understandable because it is based on your mixed imaginations and we have different perceptions and interpretations as we encounter such picture like Arturo’s work. Desert Landscape Arturo Luz, is known as a Filipino printmaker sculpture, designer, and founding member of the modern Neo-Realist school in Philippine art. He has worked in a variety of styles and techniques in varying degrees of abstraction to create playful geometric figures and forms. His paintings are marked by meticulous simplicity and restrain, with subdued colors and understated form. Luz himself described them as “ semi-representional, semi-abstract”. One of the artwork of Arturo Luz is Desert Landscape, A desert is a barren area of landscape where little precipitation occurs and consequently living conditions are hostile for plant and animal life. The lack of vegetation exposes the unprotected surface of the ground to the processes of denudation. The artwork of Arturo uses geometric figures and forms to emphasize the meaning. The use of color in the artwork gives happy satisfaction. The color highlight a deepest meaning about Desert Landscape. The texture of the artwork shows to convey a variety of messages and emotions. The artwork also also have spotlight harmony because it shows the unity of the artwork specifically in reference to the arrangement of its part. The artwork of Arturo Luz in organize specifically the lines, shapes and form that is used. Moreover the artwork is very pleasant to the eyes of the people. He really deserve to be named as national artist because of his undying artwork that merked the country Philippines. His artwork is unique and powerful to create deepest meaning. His artwork is simple yet it’s very satisfying. Simplicity is beauty.
