You take a seat at the plastic table Ayato oh-so-wonderfully set up in the middle of his living room, wincing once a bright-ass light was directed towards you, “What is all of this? It feels like I’m getting investigated.”

You grimace, “Is the light that’s burning my retinas really necessary for your plan?”

He chuckles nervously and turns off the light, “Ah, no. Sorry about that.”

You can’t help but shake your head at his antics. So dramatic, yet so serious.

Muttering underneath your breath, a slight smile spreads on your face, “You’re really something else, Ayato.”

But it seems he didn’t hear you as he rereads the notes he’s taken on his beloved notebook. You groan at the sight of it.

Sensing your dismay, your kitten jumps down from her very fancy-looking scratch post and makes her way towards you.

“What would you say are your most likable qualities?” Ayato suddenly asks, staring at you keenly for your answer.

You hum, a small but uneasy smile playing on your lips, “Hm. I’ve never really thought about what makes me likable. People who like me, like me, and people who don’t, don’t.”

He raises an eyebrow, “Never?”

You huff, “What? Am I supposed to? I don’t need people to like me. I like animals more anyways.”

Despite not really getting an answer, you notice Ayato noting something down with a small smile on his face.

“What’s with that look? What are you writing in there?” You squint, trying to snatch the notebook away.

He gasps and holds the damn thing to his chest like a baby, “Hey! Be patient. I’ll go over everything after you answer a couple more questions.”

You slump back into the seat, petting the kitten in your lap to distract you.

“What is you ideal partner? What do you usually find attractive?” He asks.

You shrug, “I wouldn’t know, I’ve never liked someone enough.”

“How am supposed to work with this?” Ayato groans, which you know he prolonged for dramatic effect. “You’re giving me nothing here!”

He can be such perfectionist once he gets caught up on something, you think. You appreciate though, it means he’s taking it seriously.

“Quit whining! You’re going to scare the kitten,” You furrow your brows. “What do you find attractive then, huh?”

Ayato practically chokes, “W-What?! Why are you asking me such personal questions?”

You stare at him, pondering whether or not you should just leave with the kitten or tough it out. Unfortunately, the chance of a discount has you choosing the latter.

You sigh, “Clearly, we need to rethink a new strategy on how to go about this. We can get to know each other as much as we want, but it won’t change the fact that we don’t act like a couple.”

Of course Ayato has thought about that. It was practically the first thing he thought of when brainstorming. But to act like a real couple with you, his heart feels like might explode.

Control and order is what Ayato works best under, and if that isn’t the case, he can find ways to adapt and improve. Since he was young, he’s practiced how to solve situations that could arise with grace and precision. So, acting should usually be no problem for him.

But…

He glances at you, you whose attention has been captured by the cat on your lap. You start cooing at her about how she’s the reason you’re going to save so much money.

His lips quirk up at the sight, “I like a girl who’s straightforward and bold. One who seems to be intimidating at first glance, but once you see her smile, it’s over. Plus, she has to like animals.”

You perk up, drumming your hands on the table, “Ohh! Write that down! That’s good!”

He shakes his head and laughs, flipping a page in his notebook, “Now, you have to go. Just think of something.”

“Wow, how helpful,” you roll your eyes.

Still, you lean back and close your eyes, humming to yourself as you think.

“I like people who are…cool,” you laugh, your cheeks warming up a bit.

Talking to him about this stuff is kind of embarrassing, you thought. But he shared, so it wouldn’t be fair to not put some effort.

He tilts his head in amusement, noticing your red cheeks, “Cool? That’s it?”

You groan, “I mean—Ugh! I like people who are like—funny and passionate about things they love once you start talking to them.”

“So having hobbies is attractive to you?” He smirks.

You slap his thigh lightly, “I don’t know how to explain it, okay? You make it sound so simple, but it’s more than that! It’s kind of like…you!”

Ayato freezes, but his mind goes haywire, “H-huh? Me?”

“And like Ayaka,” You nod, and his hopes go down the drain. “You both come from a very powerful family, and based on that, people make assumptions. It’s normal, it’s human.”

Ayato nods, and you continue, “And while you two are both polite and well-mannered, I’ve enjoy getting to find out more things about you. Like how unexpectedly dramatic you are. Or how much Ayaka like to bake despite…”

You gulp, not even being able to finish this sentence.

Ayato laughs, “Oh god, you’ve tried her baking too?”

You hit him again, lightly, “Shush! You’ll hurt her feelings!”

He catches your hand in his and pouts, “Stop hitting me! And she’s not even here! Just admit it’s bad.”

You tsk, “It’s not horrible…it’s just crunchy, sometimes.”

“Mm, crunchy,” he smirks. “Would you say those crunchy bits are usually black and taste different?”

You laugh and shake your head, “Stop. You’re talking about my best friend’s baking, you know?”

“You’re best friend is my little sister, you know?” He grins.

A voice pipes up from the doorway, “I think you guys got the acting like a couple part down.”

You scream and put an arm in front of Ayato, “Who the fuc— Childe?!”

The ginger grins and waves, “Yo.”

Ayato stands up, “Why—How did you even get in here?!”

“Your front door was unlocked. That’s real dangerous, man. Also, you weren’t picking up your phone, and Thoma got worried like he always does,” he shrugs. “Thank goodness he told me to check up on you. Who knows who could’ve broken in.”

Ayato blinks, “You?! You literally broke in?!”

He pats Ayato on the shoulder, “Don’t worry about the little things too much. Come on now, everyone is waiting.”

Ayaka laughed. “Yes, he took over my fathers company.” She said. “Oh, that’s interesting…” I replied. “What time is he going to be here?” I asked her. “He should be here around 4:00 pm, shortly after he finishes with his work.” Ayaka stated. “Oh and Thoma and Yoimiya will be coming over around 3:00 pm.” She added. “Okay, well I might be a little late getting back this afternoon. I have to talk to one of my professors about something after class.” I stated. “Oh, well hopefully you won’t be too long then.” Ayaka replied. I nodded in agreement.  Ayaka handed me a plate of breakfast. It was [Favorite Breakfast]. I thanked her and ate the breakfast.

      Once I had finished breakfast, I headed to my first class of the day. It was my history class. One of the guys from my class named Itto pulled a prank on our teacher. He brought fake bugs into the classroom and put them onto the teachers desk. She was terrified of bugs. The teacher screamed as she walked into the classroom and saw them, everyone couldn’t help but laugh. Then one started moving and Itto realized that he had actually used real bugs instead of the fake ones in his pocket. All he said was “Oops…”. Needless to say, he got detention for two days. After that, all of my other classes had went by smoothly.

     It was now the end of my English class, which was also my last class. My professor had wanted to talk to me about something, so I stayed after class. He pulled out a few papers from his desk. He told me that I should consider taking an advanced English class since I was good at it. He gave me a form to take with me and think about it.

     Once I had gotten out of the classroom, I checked to see what time it was. It was 4:08 pm. I didn’t expect it to take so long talking to my professor. I was going to be just a little late getting back to mine and Ayaka’s dorm. About ten minutes of walking later, I finally made it to the dorm.

     I opened the door and could hear chatter and laughter coming from the living room. I walked into my room and set my stuff down neatly, and then I made my way into the living room. “Oh [Name]! Good, you’re here.” Ayaka said. “Yeah, sorry that took a little longer than I thought it would…” I replied. “That’s alright, no need to be rushed.” Ayaka said. I looked around for a second, only noticing Thoma and Yoimiya. “Where is your brother?” I asked Ayaka. “Oh, he had a quick phone call that he needed to take. He should be done in just a minute.” She said. Ayaka handed me a freshly poured cup of [Favorite Drink]. “So [Name], how was your day?” Thoma asked me. “It was well, Itto pranked our teacher with bugs and got detention though.” I stated. Yoimiya laughed a little bit. “That wasn’t very nice.” Thoma said. “I know, but it was still funny to watch when he realized that they were real bugs instead of the fake ones that he had brought to use.” I said.

     We continued to wait for Ayato to join us. As I was taking  a sip of my drink, I heard the outside door open. A tall man walked into our living room. I almost choked on my drink as I realized who it was. He sat next to Ayaka and smiled at me. “Ah, you must be [Name]. My sister tells me a lot about you.” He said. “Yeah… You must be Ayato… Uh, it's nice to meet you.” I said. “It’s nice to meet you as well.” Ayato replied. “Are you alright [Name]?” Ayaka asked, as she looked a bit concerned. “Yes, I’m totally fine.” I replied.

      I whispered to Thoma and Yoimiya to meet me in my room in five minutes, they both nodded. A few minutes later, I excused myself for a minute. Soon after, the two of them met me in my room. “What’s up [Name]? Are you okay?” Yoimiya asked. “I’m fine, but this isn’t my first time meeting Ayato.” I replied. “Ah, so that’s why you were acting a little weird then.” Thoma added. “Yeah…” I said. “Well then, how do you know Ayato?” Yoimiya asked. I explained the situation to them, and told them that Ayato was the guy from last night. Both of their eyes were wide when I told them.

Chapter 3- Urgency

Series Summary: You’re a sophomore Forensic Science student in Teyvat University. Ayato is a Junior Business major at the same school. You never knew one of your best friends had a brother until you happen upon each other. You end up bringing the best out in each other.

"Goodnight Ayaka!" You called as you walked towards your room. "Goodnight," she responded in kind. Your girls night had gone swimmingly, with Kyoka staying in your room. After Mobius and Yoimiya had left, she had just closed the door and you hadn't needed to go in. But now you were ready to just lay in bed and off the uncomfortable dorm apartment furniture.

As you opened the door, you almost fainted. There laid Kyoka in your bed, just waiting for your return. "The pretty girly is finally done with the little crane." She stood swiftly crossing the room to stand imposingly before you. She twirled her hair in her fingers, leaning down to pin you in the door frame. "I would love a pretty birdy like you to warm up my bed for me," Kyoka's hand fell to your cheek and you flinched. "Come now birdy, I'm not scary, as long as I don't have a reason to be." Her nails dug into the flesh lightly as tears welled in your eyes. Your foot bashed into the door frame attempting to back away. The sound rung around the otherwise quiet dorm apartment. “Now why would you go do that. You’re making me mad now sweet girl,” Kyoka’s voice was sing song as her nails removed themselves from your cheek and instead that hand moved to grab your hair and tug. Her other hand moved up and slapped across your face. Your choked back a cry, the muffled noise drowning in your ears. Your hands were shaking behind your back as you pressed your phone’s power button three times triggering the emergency phone call- Mobius answered immediately you never called her when she was away.

“Now now pretty girl don’t cry. Don’t want to let anyone else know, or else others will get hurt too,” Kyoka hushed. The free hand she had used rising up to your eyes and dragging her nail along the bottom of your eye, tears pooling on the edge of her nail. Quickly she dug her nail into the soft skin bringing out a cry from you as blood pooled on her nail. You let out a cry of pain immediately. Mobius’ heart cracked hearing your cry. She texted Ayaka immediately “Get her out of there”. Ayaka moved immediately, jolting out of bed, and throwing her door open. She crossed over to your door quickly, and knocked. The room fell silent as the knock brought a still. Kyoka removed herself from your still body, before opening the door. “What do you want?” She asked gruffly.

“I was going to ask to borrow y/n for a bit. Gorou texted me asking if I could find someone to help with his Orgo work. I know that the two of them have the same professor.” Ayaka smiled. Kyoka stood in the doorway, blocking you two. “We’re having some new roommate bonding time, tell your little friend she’s busy.” “Actually it’s no problem really,” you tried to move past Kyoka and she grabbed your arm, yanking. You winced in pain a numbness spreading through your arm. You couldn’t move it without pain.

“Let her go now,” Ayaka said grimly her face darkening. “Make me,” Kyoka growled tightening her grip on your arm. You winced at the pain cutting through the numbness. Ayaka backed away seeing your pain grabbing her keys. “How the fuck did she know?!” Kyoka screamed at you, as tears cut down your face. Your phone long since abandoned on the floor after your failed attempt to leave. She released your arm and you grabbed your phone off the floor before rushing into the bathroom and slamming the lock on. Looking at the screen you saw the phone call with Mobius and sighed in relief before letting all the tears flow.

Ayaka was frantically running down the hall, running to get to RA Cyno. Knocking on his door frantically, Ayaka was answered rapidly. "What's wrong?" He seemed tired but awake. "There's an incident occurring in our dorm. I have reason to believe one of my suitemates is posing a threat to her roommate." That jolted Cyno awake, and he wordlessly grabbed his keys and phone before following Ayaka down the hall. The room was silent except for the shallow cries coming from the bathroom.

“Y/N’s in the bathroom, the other one is in the room.” Ayaka whispered to Cyno. Cyno nodded and crossed to the bathroom door, “RA open up.” The door opened and you stood there shaking, breathless. Blood pooling beneath one of your eyes, a bruise forming on your face, and one arm being kept supported in the crook of the arm that had opened the door. The sight broke Ayaka’s heart as Cyno let out a small breath, the arm could be broken. “Come with me to the main lobby,” he breathed out. He could deal with the roommate later, for now proper medical attention was more important. “I’m going to take you to the hospital, Ayaka stay with her and you two can file a full incident report. Grab anything you need for the night, I’ll be right outside calling my supervisor to let her know what’s happening.” Ayaka nodded ushering you both into her room to make a bag, locking it behind you. The soft thump of the main door to the suite closing signaled Cyno’s exit.

Ayaka tossed phone chargers, her wallet, some headphones, and her keys. She threw a jacket on before laying a blanket over you and wrapping it around you. The room was silent as the door clicked open. Your hurried steps out the door, we’re interrupted by the sound of a door being violently thrown open. Kyoka burst out seething. Ayaka bordering on pushed you to the suite door and Kyoka began to charge. You two just barely got out before her hands reached you. Cyno’s eyes widened as you two tumbled out and started walking towards the elevator as fast as you could. He followed behind, keys in hand and a text to Tighnari explaining what happened and where he was. Kyoka stood in the doorway her mouth opened. “I’M GOING TO FUCKING KILL YOU Y/F/N Y/L/N JUST WAIT UNTIL I GET MY HANDS ON YOU I’L TEAR YOU LIMB FROM FUCKING LIMB! NOBODY WILL RECOGNIZE YOU AFTER!” Her voice rang through the empty dorm halls.

Tears were in your eyes as you stood in the elevator. “I promise you Y/N, she won’t be allowed anywhere near you. I’ll help you fill out a restraining order, a police report, everything,” Cyno breathed out a silent rage burning in him. The elevator arrived at the lobby and your group of three quickly exited the dorm and walked to the back, getting into Cyno’s car. It was well worn, with flowers in decorating the back seat, Tighnari’s favorites and Collei’s favorites. It felt like a family car and put you at ease, you were safe.

The drive to the hospital was quiet, too much fear hanging in the air after the events of the night. He pulled up in front of the ER entrance. “If you need someone to pick up, call the building phone and I’ll come get you. I could understand being uncomfortable getting a Lyft or Uber.” You hummed, opening the door to get out, “Thank you for everything RA Cyno.”

“You don’t need to call me your RA,” Cyno replied. You nodded in understanding before getting out. Ayaka followed suit as you walked into the ER. The wait was minimal before you were taken into an examination room. Ayaka zoned out sitting in the room with you as you answered the nurse’s questions. When they began examining your arm, she zoned back in. “It appears you have a nursemaid’s elbow Miss Y/L/N, and with it likely a fracture in the forearm. I’m going to take you to get an X-Ray. Other than that the wound under your eye is shallow but it’s in a bad place, after the X-Ray I’d like to disinfect and stitch it up. I’ll give you something to put on it to disinfect it. If there’s a fracture in your arm, which I’m surly certain there is, I’d like you to stay overnight. Your friend can stay with you too.” The nurse looked rather empathetic at the situation. You nodded, as you left the exam room with the nurse following the nurse to the X-Ray room. The nurse hadn’t questioned your circumstances, simply smiled, and said she was happy to help you.

The X-Ray thankfully came back no fracture, but they kept you overnight anyway. You would deal with the fallout tomorrow. Ayaka was sitting in the corner on the uncomfortable furniture. She had told Yoimiya and Mobius everything. She had one last person to text.

AN: OK SO HI THIS TOOK A WHILE TO MAKE. So I myself am a sophomore Forensic Science (specifically forensic bio) student, and so finding time to write this is a struggle with 3 labs this semester. All that could be heard from your table were laughter and gossip galore. The restaurant was empty as you rented it, courtesy of Ayato, of course. What a sweet brother.

“Haha! I still remember when they accidentally kissed in the playground in 6th grade! Everyone was talking about it!” You say, bringing up an embarrassing memory from your childhood with them.

“Wait, really!? They’ve kissed before??” Kokomi asks, not knowing so.

“Yeah! There was also this one time where-”

“Oh? You guys are here too!” A voice from a certain ginger enters the vicinity.

Scaramouche was seated across from you, sitting next to Shinobu. While yours and Kazuha’s eyes were on the beautiful girls in front of you, his eyes were on both of you.
