Different anon from the one who told you was going to watch Queer because of you, but I also watched it and did a deep dive on interviews with Guadagnino and I’m really curious how you interpret the story since you said you disagree with him. I assume you don’t think Allerton and Lee loved each other in any capacity? How do you interpret the whole movie? I’d love to hear your analysis.

hello hello <3 First of all, I want to hear what you think of the film, because even now I'm torn and I want to make up my mind either way.

As to where I stand -- the first disclaimer I must give is I almost never find on-screen romance believable and the second is: I still stand by my recommendation of this film and I think the first 2/3rds are pretty great (and I wish they had just stretched them out and cut out the whole yage mess.) With that out the way: I think they really liked each other, I think it's probably true that Lee was falling in love with Allerton, I think Allerton clearly felt something for Lee and could have (theoretically) grown to reciprocate that love, but he doesn't, for whatever reason, and it's kind of the whole point that we're not supposed to ever be sure why (just as Lee never can be). My guess is: Allerton was too disgusted overwhelmed by Lee, which is heartbreaking but also really interesting philosophically and a very normal human experience that's worth exploring in film. And as an exploration of desperation and loneliness and repulsion and addiction and desire and cruelty, ~80% of the film works pretty well.

My frustration with Guadagnino (outside of my issues with the third act and the editing of the final sequences) is he's coming after the movie is over and telling me that all along I was observing profound mutual love. When did this love develop? Like, which scenes exactly? We've watched the entirety of the relationship, from their very first meeting -- where was the moment we were supposed to recognize they are mutually and profoundly in love? The ayahusca scene is meant to be a revelation of the intense connection that already existed-- but to me it felt almost like an *aha!* moment in a bad mystery where the clues weren't set up properly. Again, it's pretty obvious that Allerton is interested in Lee and enjoys being pursued and desired by him, and their sex scenes are adapted to be much warmer and more reciprocal than they're hinted at in the book -- but is it really the case that the only reason he could reject Lee is "repression"? It seems like Guadagnino is convinced, much like Lee is in the movie, that the only barrier to being together is whether or not Allerton is "queer" (sexually and/or politically) or whether he can finally defeat "repression" (he loves that word)-- but is Allerton really as repressed as Guadagnino is now telling us? We're supposed to infer that from knowing the film is set in the 50s, notwithstanding the fact their whole world is a fake toy-world where everything is artificial and Allerton is openly hanging out with homosexuals and asking an old queen to take him to the bar where the "screaming fags" hang out, and notwithstanding the fact that he very explicitly tells Lee he's protective of his independence and that Lee is very obviously trying to possess him.

It seems Guadagnino pities Lee to such a degree that he can't meet him on his own terms and take him seriously enough to recognize that he's repulsive (though Lee does seem self-aware, at least). And I get the sense that, perversely, he doesn't really have any empathy for Allerton/Marker if he indeed believes he was a repressed character, nor does he believe Burroughs. I think he thinks they're cowardly, and I think he blames Allerton almost entirely for how the story turned out (cf. the video of Drew Starkey at one of the festivals where he mentions being told to play the character as "a nasty bitch", and of course also the whole confrontation with cotter before they leave). And the decision to completely write out any mention of Joan Volmer or Billy Burroughs seems to come from his consultation with Oliver Harris who rewrote the introduction to the novella and pretty much decided that Burroughs's own reflections are self-delusion. He could have written an original screenplay inspired by Queer, or he could have adapted it from Allerton's perspective. But I don't think he's actually interested in the interiority of the character, I think he's just intrigued by him qua love-object and wants to have won the challenge of breaking him open. Except of course he uncovers no truth at all, there's no specificity in the revelation, it's just some banality about how being in love is scary -- and it's not even in the film!

Getting treatment has been really difficult. There are no OCD specialists in Ecuador, no centers to treat it and most professionals that claim to understand it have a very basic understanding of it. I've spent these past few years observing how people understand and treat mental illness here, from plant medicine, rituals, to keeping good habits, communal support, all the different tools people already knew and offered to me at some point in an attempt to help.

So far I keep believing that my illness was far too advanced for me to able to use the resources we knew, and medicinal plants like yagé or san pedro were not an option. I mean they still kind of found their way to me which was crazy, the day after the accidental ayahusca intake + whole trip really did open my mind to what healing meant and the spiritual aspects of it. Still have not had the pleasure of taking san pedro and I will postpone it until my urine stops smelling like medicine, which won't happen until I am able to drop some of the drugs I'm currently taking, all prescribed by specialists. Western medicine is arriving to what is being forgotten here in the name of being more like the US or other firs world countries: health is communal, the body remembers. Don't think about it too much, it's better to live.

Without a doubt the genocide of colonization is succesful when medicine is banned and knowledge stripped away.
