Portfolio Development - Extended project of Assignment 6

This is the extended project of assignment 6 and the concept art above is the final result. Unlike the character design in assignment 6, which depicts a cruel and ferocious soldier, I decided to incorporate some easy-going and nostalgic elements to create a new ‘skin’ for my character, MOMO. In this project, the theme of his new look was inspired by arcade games, racecar elements and trends from the 90s. 

Instead of a pair of ferrous demonic horns, I gave him a pair of cute cat ears this time, which enhances his ability to sense the surrounding environment during combat.

The cat ears design was inspired by the Axent wear cat ear headphone, created by my favourite artist, Yumei. This product was released 10 years ago, which makes it very nostalgic, yet, I still find this design to be stylish even today. The headphones feature a headband with cat ears, and the center of each ear resembles stereo speakers, which I personally think makes the design very innovative.

His armour structure features intricate triangular designs, which was inspired by the inner frame of my favourite motorcycle, the H2R. Additionally, his auxiliary mechanical spine is used to enhance his overall strength and mobility. The design shape and colours are inspired by the racetrack. Drawing inspiration from 90s roller skating, I also gave him a pair of rollers in his shoes to indicate his fast-paced and agile combat style. When I was young, I always watched the Formula 1 championship with my father, and I thought the F1 champions’ jacket designs were extremely cool. So I tried to design a race jacket for him using a vibrant colour.

One of my nostalgic memories is the arcade games center in my place. It was my favourite spot or rendezvous point with my friends during high school. I recalled that I had to stick with the Jubeat arcade machine for an hour whenever I entered the game center. Jubeat is a music rhythm arcade game, the machine has a very modern shape and stylish neon colours, which will change according to the music rhythm. The colour palette of my character is heavily inspired by the Jubeat machine. I used black as the primary colour with two very bright and saturated contrasting colours as the accents. The accent colours are used to highlight the features of his armour design to make him stand out, while the primary colour serves as a purpose of negative space, balancing the bright colours. Overall, I am quite satisfied with the final result, and I enjoyed the process of creating a new outfit for my old character. The new outfit surprisingly gives him some new characteristics, naughty, cute and playful, contrasting with the deadly, merciless and violent traits of the old design.

hey thanks! you know, it’s okay, i don’t mind if i can help folks out a bit. but, yes, there’s definitely been a lot lately, hasn’t there?

anyway, the cat-ear phones were called axent wear, and were produced by a company called brookstone. i was one of the original indiegogo backers for the project, so i got them from that at first, but unfortunately brookstone itself has since gone under so i currently don’t know of a good place to get them. my previous pair broke so i had to get my current one from ebay. it’s getting messy, and i am very concerned for the future of cat-ear headphones :[

Hey! I saw your tweet about the axent wear cat ear headphones. I love them design wise. They are as pretty as in the pictures! ♥ But I and everyone I know who got them had bad experiences with them :( Either they didn't work at all, only one side worked, or they had the same problem as me: speaker split the stereo sound music and only play the sound from one direction on both sides of the headphone :( But maybe they fixed these problems by now! My experience is from two years ago after all :)

Honestly, I think what I’ll do is pick a more classic headset. Tomorrow I go in town to test out some headphones and see if there’s one that fits my liking better, and i’ll ask for this on my birthday…

In the words of Ciara, I’ve been gone for too long, now it’s time to bring it back.

Wassup Miraculous fandom! It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything new. Sorry about that. A lot of personal stuff happened for me last month including one tragic one (I don’t want to repeat myself again cause it hurts me a bit to have to repeat this kind of thing so I’m just going to tell you guys to read this ♥ post and this ♥ post to understand why I was inactive for a month)

But I am back now and here I am making my grand return to my Miraculous Squiggle paint series with another one of my favourite foxy lady. I think it’s pretty obvious by now who my favourite of the female characters is. I really like Alya and when I’m in a rut, she’s my favourite go-to character to paint.

The theme for this piece was inspired by the Axent Wear Cat-eared headphones originally created by the awesometastic @yuumei-art (if you’re not familiar with their work, I encourage you to check them out for sure). Thought it would be cool to draw Alya wearing fox-shaped headphones. It’s one of those creative moments where you just get have an idea and go with it no matter what it is.

It disgusts me that you fancy yourself an artist of some sort but would so easily dismiss another artist's claim to their own work... anyway. You know why you've seen cat ear headphone designs for years now? BC Yuumei first designed them in 2010 (7 YEARS AGO) then worked to get them made real, eventually working with Brookstone to get them out. Literally just google "yuumei axent wear" and grow a heart.

If you want to see my art you can hop over to my da, HalfaSoulGinger and stop hiding behind an annon and attack me with a face. I'm well aware she created the cat headphone designs that hit the market, what I'm saying is the simple idea behind "headphones with animal ears" is something very hard to prove. Like everyone in the comments is already saying, it's a simple rendered down version that can't be proven to be hers. As for a heart? I don't care about art theft or people whining that their design got stolen because that is the risk you agree to take in all terms and services because you can't prove shit when it comes to digital art. Now if adult swim as selling actual coppies of her headphone designs that's fine,sue them for days to come. But the very concept she can't own, just like I don't own blue eyed vampires or red tank top designs. What disgusts ME is that you think this is how you support her, by going after her other followers (because really, if you're going after me for not seeing the big deal safe to assume you're doing it to all the others) for not believing it's the end of the world. I'm sorry her basic design got "ripped off" but if she's covered her ass legally like she should've then her lawyers will be on it in a couple of days, and they'll find they can't do anything to stop the show from using what could be her designs BUT YAY for Google, because when someone wants those headphones adult swim should not be able to sell them provided yuumei has done the right paperwork, and those clients will end up at her store regardless. When you're committed to someone or something it's pretty easy to find who actually made it first, ya just need to put ya big girl panties on if you think you can manage.
