who: @mountainvroyce where: the morning of axell's wedding to the lady yuna upcliff

it felt as though it had been history itself since news of celebration and festivity had come to the halls of runestone; which were as warm as they were ancient and eerie. the very same hallway that could feel as though it were warmth itself could also feel as though it would stretch on forever and ever, and truly, nobody ever felt really alone in runestone. for a land that relied so heavily upon tradition and history itself, it felt as though nothing ever truly became history within these walls: there were always glimpses of shadows, or scents that were long since dead suddenly coming to fruition once again.

he had been half asleep when he was sure he had heard the sound of malcom royce's ancient laughter coming from within his study, that was now the study for the royces: rather than a single ruling lord. it had little effect on graham at this point, only made him run a hand through his dark hair as he looked sideways toward the sight of the queen, remaining asleep upon the pillow. he rolled out of the bed, from beneath the tartan quilts, slipping his shirt on as he made his way for the study: in which, he knew what he needed to get hold of. there was a scroll, penned years ago; so many years ago.

and history itself did not die, and those who seemingly had left them behind continued to show their approval in more ways than one as the rain cleared on the morning of an ancient ceremony. the colours of the trees had begun to turn shades of red, orange and yellow, and whilst the land itself were dying, it felt as though it were putting on one final burst of colour before the seasons changed. the seasons always changed in runestone, almost as though it had a temperament of itself: the sound of bagpipes filled the crisp october air, to inform the smallfolk in the towns scattered below the mighty fortress high atop the cliff that the special day had come.

within the walls were the king consort, the ruling queen, the newborn princess whose name was an echo of the ancient name of the vale, and the falcon court.

one heard the tongue of andals and first men mixing alike through the halls as he passed his way through, speaking to those servants in his household in the same way he always had, long before the title of king consort had rested upon his shoulders. long before the title of hand of the king, or even kingslayer. his destination was the rooms of the groom, he who would be marrying the lady upcliff later on this day, and he wondered whether the man were even awake yet. he knocked, his rhythm the typical one they would do as boys to let one another it was him, though it had no true emotional sentiment behind it anymore.

"get some clothes on if you are not decent." graham called from behind the door, ensuring no servants would overhear him.

when the man entered the chambers of axell royce, who would soon become a married man with responsibilities of his own, he looked upon him. he did not think he would see this day. and now he was. "i've something for you." graham spoke, in a way that sounded different to how he spoke within the eyrie: allowing their natural accent to wrap around each word, each syllable. the scroll was put down on the desk. "father wrote it for today." for the sons of royce upon their wedding day; graham had received his upon his first marriage to the eldest estermont daughter. all knew how that had ended up.

who: @mountainvroyce​ where: the reception chamber of queen ravella arryn within highgarden, prior to the departure of the knights of the vale back to the vale of arryn to deal with the influx of mountain men attacks

there were swirling rumours of further tensions increasingly in the northern court, as addressed not only by the ambassadors the vale had insisted on being part of the northern court upon the formal declaration of their alliance, but even from the words the winter queen spoke softly to her sister. they were two sisters with crowns upon their heads, two very different heads - one remained so very alive, and one felt so very dead. 

whilst her own focus alongside domeric was on getting to the bottom of what had occurred between the three sisters and the manderly fleet, and stripping the three sisters of any taxation relief in order to pay what the north was sending to the iron bank, the north had to deal with who had exposed the wealth of the manderly ship itself. 

and now, there were rumours that the north were thinking of packing up and returning home. it seemed as though both of their lands, almost mirroring their volitile geography and harsh landscapes, were keen to rip themselves apart - only, those mountain clan savages were not part of their world. not part of civility, not part of society, and would be pushed out. pushed off, the cliff, pushed off the face of history if need be. 

“come in, my lord.” the audience chamber was empty, and ravella remained sat beside her window; gentle rains pattered against the window, sticky summer heat that did not agree with the swell of her stomach. she preferred her rain thundering, crashing, as he would know all too well. 

it would take years, decades, centuries, but she had faith it would be done. their world was one of dragons, of magic and of fantasy - knights of the vale could and will once again cleanse the lands that stand tall against them. she remained silent as she looked upon him. the ghost of runestone. there was an empty smile on marble features, as though she acted as if nothing at all were wrong. why was it wrong? 

“there are stirrings in the north. our alliance calls for military support, should it be needed. i will draw the line - valemen are needed within the vale. unless you mean to tell me we can spare some.” they could not. surely.

something  camp  didn't  have  ...  at  least  not  to  his  knowledge?  saunas.  the  gym  he  worked  with  later  on  had  their  own  &  he'd  surely  come  to  appreciate  them  after  long  days  -  or  nights  of  training  &  work-outs.  or  even  after  fight  days.  lay  back,  let  the  heat  do  the  work  for  you.  it  wasn't  like  he  missed  them  per  se,  but  he  wasn't  going  to  let  the  opportunity  slide.  towel  around  his  waist,  he  was  just  leaving  the  baths  -  somewhat  in  a  hurry,  because  he  still  had  a  routine  to  work  on  today  &  a  few  sets  he  skipped  earlier  in  favor  of  meeting  up  with  someone.  pfh,  before  all  this  skipping  sets  for  a  person  never  quite  seemed  like  something  he'd  do.  at  least  not  for  many  people.  he  still  wouldn't.  maybe  ...  he  hadn't  changed  after  all,  who  knew.

sliding  inside  a  sauna  somewhat  further  to  the  back  -  hoping  those  were  less  frequented  so  that  he  didn't  have  to  share  potential  moments  of  peace  &  relaxation  with  a  horde  of  wild  monkeys  (teenagers),  he  didn't  quite  expect  a  familiar  face.  not  bad  potential  company  at  all.  "hey,  you  uh...  you  mind?"  little  nod  towards  one  of  the  wooden  benches,  motioning  as  to  what  he  was  trying  to  ...convey.  you,  me  -  that  okay?

silas  was  still  figuring  himself  out.  or  rather  the  man  he  replaced,  the  life  he  ...stole.  did  he  steal  it  when  ...well,  when  it  was  his  life?  without  their  group  of  godlings  this  other  him  wouldn't  have  existed,  right?  but  what  happened  to  the  other  him?  he  was  getting  glimpses,  though  honestly  -  he'd  mostly  been  hiding  from  the  truth,  everybody's  truths  about  him..  former  him.  fuck,  he  didn't  even  know.

when  the  son  of  kratos  couldn't  sleep,  he'd  usually  spend  the  night  at  the  kratos  cabin  basement  to  work  out,  but  ...it  didn't  feel  like  his  ...home.  he  knew  it  was,  in  a  way,  but  at  the  same  time  ..  it  wasn't.  apparently,  the  other  him  moved  into  the  nyx  cabin  -  not  that  it  was  a  bad  cabin  to  live  in,  but  ...  he  couldn't  quite  believe  he  gave  up  his  cabin,  his  home.  even  the  training  grounds  didn't  feel  ...the  same,  or  maybe  he  was  just  upset  over  something  ridiculously  small.  probably.

the  lake  was  good  for  when  he  needed  silence,  which  is  why  he  made  his  way  over  in  the  dark  -  his  cat's  eye  ring  illuminating  the  way  towards  the  water,  where  he  found  he  wasn't  alone.  ah.  he  knew  that  frame  anywhere.  "can't  sleep?"  hand  on  the  man's  shoulder,  smile  cracked  his  way,  silas  flopped  down  next  to  him,  shoes  still  on  &  cross-legged,  but  ...he  was  tempted.  "lil'  midnight  swim,  huh?"

All of this was hard to swallow.

He was still processing everything that had happened during the trial and now he was also having to learn a whole new timeline?

Combined with the fact that the version of Axel he'd just replaced apparently didn't take notes or study, it felt like he didn't know where to pick up and start processing.

So, instead, he went to the dock for the lack and sat there. Would it help him? No, probably not. But sitting back in silence and processing everything felt better than the other options. Let the cool air on his face and cooler water on his legs be a much-needed distraction.

Our speakers will be Kalle Müller, who is a postdoctoral researcher at Université Côte d'Azur, and Katrin Axel-Tober, who is a professor at the University of Tübingen. They will be presenting the paper "Layers of assertive clause: Propositions, Judgements, Commitments, Acts" by Manfred Krifka. The workshop will take place from 4pm to 6pm in room 005 of the Bâtiment de l'Horloge, campus Saint-Jean d'Angély, or over Zoom.

task 005 - zodiac signs

question 1- What is your character’s zodiac sign?

Scorpio

question 2- List at least 3 negative traits that your character’s sign has. Does your character exhibit these traits? Give examples or explain a time when they have behaved in this way.

Suspicious Manipulative Unyielding Axel absolutely exhibits these traits. As a child who suffered nothing but abuse and neglect- Axel goes into every situation suspicious of people’s ulterior motives. He always assumes that people are playing an angle even when they’re coming off as entirely genuine. He manipulates any situation that he can to fit his narrative. He Tries his best to put himself above aboslutely anyone and everything else as a means to not get hurt. He does his best to manipulate people’s view on him as the scarier he comes off the less people will surround themselves with him and the less chance of him ultimately getting hurt if they leave. Axel’s very unyielding in the sense of once he has a thought or idea- that;s it. You’re not changing his mind and he’s not doing anything else. If it’s a person- such as Leo, who he has decided is good in his books that’s it. He’s great. He is a very firm believer that he is smarter than most of his peers and therefor he likely is correct more often than them so why argue.

question 3- List at least 3 positive traits that your character’s sign has. Does your character exhibit these traits? Give examples or explain a time when they have behaved in this way.

Loyal Passionate  Observant As mentioned in the ‘unyielding’ category, Axel is loyal through and through. Once this man has decided that he rides for you, it’s for life. Nearly nothing can shake his loyalty. He doesn’t care what people think unless it’s the people that have his loyalties.  Passion comes easily to Axel when he finds something that he likes or is good at. He’s fluent in over 5 languages because once he got started in being bilingual he just kept going. He had to master the craft of speaking more than one language, two quickly turned into three, three to four and so on. Axel is also extremely passionate in the art of pottery- an activity once suggested to him at a boarding school he attended by a trusted counsilor, now a hobby he absolitely cannot put down. He pours his entire heart and soul into evert piece he makes.  Axel is also very observant. Upon initially being released from what was basically his parents prison dungeon they had for him- Axel spent all of his time observing people... learning what made them tick, what made them happy. Basically how to be a person and how to interact with people. To this day you’re way more likely to find Axel sitting in the halls, watching people over interacting with his peers. His keen conservancy makes it very easy for him to read people. 

question 4- If there are any specific opposing traits that your character has which isn’t typical for their sign, what traits are they? Give examples of this opposing behaviour.

One opposing trait Axel has that is very different from a typical Scorpio is he’s very passive in the jealousy department. Scorpios are very known for their jealous behaviours whereas Axel usually could not care less. The times he’s been interested in someone romantically and they’ve tried to dangle other people in front of him to get his attention it hasn’t phased him at all. He is a very much ‘do your own thing- I’m here when you need me’ kind of person.

question 5- Which zodiac sign associated traits does your character exhibit that would be obvious to others? Which traits aren’t as obvious?

I’d think all of the ‘weakness’ listed traits above come off as pretty obvious to others when it comes to Axel, whereas also most of the ‘positive’ traits would be a little harder to see to someone who doesn’t know him well as he’s very shut off and puts up an agressive front, only really allowing his negative traits to be seen by people that he does not trust. 

question 6- Overall, do you find that your character’s sign suits their personality? Why or why not?

Oh absolutely- Axel is a true Scorpio through and through. Why? Because I intentionally made him a Scorpio based off his traits ... Because he matches more than not of the criteria listed for a typical Scorpio. The usual reaction to people being told that Axel is a Scorpio born on Devil’s night is anything but shock. It seems to be something that people have come to expect. 

question 7- Which aspect under the “In a Nutshell” header do you think describes your character the best? The least?

I honestly could copy and paste the entire ‘In a nutshell category here to describe Axel. I think it does a pretty nail on job of describing what he’s like and who he is as a character. If I had to pick just one sentence from the ‘in a nutshell’ that I think describes him the best it would be “They present a cool, detached and unemotional air to the world yet lying underneath is tremendous power, extreme strength, intense passion and a strong will and a persistent drive“.  I did not find a statement in this category that I could honestly say ‘least’ describes him. 

question 8- Which aspect under the “Deep Inside” header do you think describes your character the best? The least?

Under the ‘Deep Inside’ catagory I’d say the sentence that best describes Axel in it is “Scorpios are very intuitive, but not as in a psychic sense, more as intuitive into the human mind, they have a great understanding of the mystery and the power of the human mind.” As I’ve stated before above Axel has an absolutely amazing character read on people. He is almost a human lie detector, and is very good at picking up on the tiniest changes in emotion.  The sentence in the ‘Deep inside’ category that I think least describes Axel would again have to be “Scorpios are all about control, they need to be in control at all times. To be out of control is very threatening.” Axel very much does not care to have control over things that are not in his control in the first place. He’s very passive in the sense of letting people do what they want, and seeing how situations play out and going from there. 

question 9- Read the “How to Attract” header of your character’s sign. Do you find this accurately describes what would draw them to another person?

The “How to Attract” category, I’d say does pretty accurately describe good ways to attract someone like Axel. It highlights that they don’t particularity like someone who’s going to try to control them- which is accurate. He demands the same respect he gives on being very free range and open with anyone he dates. While also pointing out that Scoprios don’t like the ‘damsel in distress’ type which is absolutely true. Axel does not want to be someone’s prince charming. If they say they’re walking away- he’s letting them. If they constantly need saving he’s also going to grow tired of the dynamic very quickly. 

question 10- Did you already have a birthday chosen for your character? Had you considered the sign associated with that date? If you don’t find that your character fits the descriptions of their sign, which of the other signs do you think they’re like?

I did have a birthday already chosen for my character based entirely around the fact that I thought Axel was the most closely knit with a Scorpio’s personality- and the fact that he needed to be born on devil’s night- I think he very much fits the typical cookie cutter description of a Scorpio man. Had he not of been a Scorpio the other sign I  was leaning Axel towards was Gemini for their two faced nature and ability to be deceptive yet charming. 

question 11- Are there any additional descriptions you found in your reading that stand out to you or also describe your character well? What were they?

One thing that I’d never considered that stood out in my readings on Scorpio was the description of “They are all about intensity and contradictions. They like to be aware of a situation and always know what's going on, figuring this out with their probing mind, on the other hand, they are interested in the occult, the paranormal, conspiracy theories and other types of similar unknown mysteries.” Now that I think of it I absolutely could see Axel obsessing and deep diving into the world of consipracy theories and the paranormal and with his usual Scorpio wit- needing to know absolutely every tiny theory and every small detail of such.
