Soooooooo, this happened last night!! I was sidling up to the hotel bar to get drinks, when I saw the Delightful and Hilarious Sandra Valls, the MC for Creating Change 2023 and a fantastic standup comic, who immediately asked if she knew me! And, while this question is one I get asked a lot in queer spaces like this, I knew she knew me from an entirely different part of my life!! Sandra was a regular performer when I was the showroom manager at The Hollywood Improv, before I transitioned!!! So of course I said a very empathetic YES to the moment! She brings a wealth of knowledge, enthusiasm, and compassion to our team, and we hope you get to know her better by checking out her bio below! “Courtney grew up in Ohio and Pennsylvania, where she worked as a horse trainer and riding instructor before moving to California for law school. She served as a professor at McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento for 14 years, teaching courses including Animal Law, where she also focused her research and writing. Today she works for a company that facilitates more financially attainable access to legal education and success on the bar exam. Courtney became a vegetarian at eight years old after visiting a stockyard, and she became vegan in 2013 after researching the health benefits of a vegan diet when her mother was diagnosed with cancer. As she learned more about the ethical and environmental sides of the equation, she and her husband extended their veganism to all other areas of their lives, from clothing to cosmetics to medicine and even to the car they drive. She recognizes her privilege in being able to make these choices, and she hopes to help others learn about and gain access to similar options. If she has a spare moment, Courtney enjoys visiting and volunteering at animal shelters and sanctuaries, running, kayaking, singing, and reading—preferably outside so she can ask to pet any dogs who happen to walk by. This morning I went to see my install off and I’ll admit I thoroughly enjoy this person as much as I enjoy her awesome #labradoodle Sally 🐶. A good chuck of time went by when I went back there today & when I walked in she told me she had found something for me, I was shocked!
