*breaks into ur askbox through a plaster wall* hi i am genuinely fascinated by how you do patterns/ornaments in your art. I don't have like, the slightest bit of patience to do those, but I'm still hella interested to know how ppl do them. Do you plan them out or is it 'fuck it we ball' type of process? Do you usually go into more symbolic meanings (like with the floral ornaments) or add whatever fits aesthetically? Also are there any particular artists that inspire you when drawing them?

hiii ok let's get serious now

while it'd be easier to tell me about my #process on a case by case basis (so if you have an image/images in particular you'd like to know how i did the patterns of i could likely be more precise in my response) the Vast Majority of the time truly i am ballin. at most I might sketch out where i want Big Pieces, and where i'll fill out with smaller things However Comma there are motifs that keep coming back. and i'm sorry to tell you this. one of them is The Patience To Do So. in no order whatsoever:

floral motifs. i never go for something that Actively Looks Like A Real Flower on purpose: the language of flowers is very dependant of era and place, and a flower that means [x] in 1910s Russia might not mean the same in 1870s England.

vegetal motifs in general, so leaves, vagyuely ivy-looking stuff, stuff inspired by mushrooms & fungi, etc

animal motifs, typically associated with the characters i'm drawing. i might draw stylized birds, wings, horns, serpents/snakes, scales, etc.

eyes, mouths, wounds, or anything that looks kinda ()-like. it can also. look quite yonic depending on the context so. yeah you could say i draw those motifs.

anatomical motifs, inspired by scientific diagrams of the epidermis, of cells, of different organs and body parts, etc. i rely a lot on [this] (Henry Gray’s Anatomy of the Human Body) because you have a lot of engravings for every body part you could think of.

random motifs: spikes, spirals, dots, waves, curls, blobs, "ladders",...

i do equal parts symbol & vibes. as mentioned above i'll often fit in animals that i associate with the characters i have drawn, add more anatomical stuff depending on the characters,... but a lot of the "filler" squiggles are pure vibes. i use them to connect symbols together. also most of the characters i draw with these types of patterns are in equal parts anatomy of the body and anatomy of the vegetal so truly i'm tailoring it here.

as for artists i'm inspired by those are the two i always mention:

Ernst Haeckel especially his Kunstformen der Natur (<- link to the Gallica digitalization, but if you google search that you'll also see plenty of good images). He was mostly a biologist & his KdN is drawings he did within his research, a bunch and i mean a buuunnnnccchhh of very beautiful drawings of so many lifeforms on earth. i often reuse his drawings of hexacorallia in peterstakh artworks. those types of artworks if you see what i'm seeing.

i'm also incredibly inspired by Solange Knopf's artworks, and routinely joke that i keep being inspired by her art. i loooove how she does it very freeflowing, packed with so much details

again, i'd probably have more to say if you pointed to an image in particular, but for the most part this is it chrewly!

desire: What's one thing your OC wants more than anything in the world? Are they open with that desire? Why or why not? What would they do to fulfill it?

When she was still a sapling, she wished for freedom. Freedom from the Mother, freedom to do as she choose, without any rules to tell her how to act.

Now that she has this freedom, she's driven to keep it. She won't stop from anything in her fight for freedom.

From lower tiers of desires: she's quite a hedonist so she's looking for as much pleasure and fun as she can get, and she's also out there wishing for airships to go away because there are less and less people on the seas and she has to plunder SOME SHIPS, RIGHT

hide: What does your OC hide? Why do they hide it?

She doesn't hide shit! Is what I and she would like to say, but we know that's not true. Seadhna is a proud person so she's very >:[ about any shames that come her way (*cough* one of those shames' names is Shay and how she feels deceived by them... *cough*) and tries to hide those. She is only truly open with a few people of her crew. The rest of the crew... well, rumors spread, even if you try to quell them.

AIRELL TIME~!

future: What's the worst possible future for your OC? Are they taking steps to avoid that outcome? Are they even aware it's a possibility?

For now Airell is worried that they might lose themselves in whatever they are now. They feel like that's something that they wouldn't be able to escape if the fate says so. They hope they're wrong. They hope that fate isn't real, at least in this case.

From my perspective as a writer, I feel like the worst thing for Airell would be them becoming corrupted in any way by either dragon magic or the void (we're past now in the story but the ideas of corruption were there). They would need to be killed and I would have to have them killed BUT I would enjoy the drama and angst. If I went with that route, I would be able to put so much messages into it. Man. But I love Airell too much so it didn't happen.

Another "bad" ending would be corruption but in a less literal sense. Something would need to happen to make them switch their view of the world.

skin: How comfortable is your OC in their skin? Do they grapple with anything that lives inside them—a beast, a curse, a failure, a monster? How do they face the smallest, weakest, most horrible version of themself? Are they able to acknowledge it at all?

Airell used to be very confident in themselves. Confident and proud. Great personality, great body, they thought of themselves as Picture Perfect Commander. Well, to many people they were just that. Airell being quite a lose cannon and problematic in some areas... let's leave that for some other time.

Now they feel...scared. They won't let anyone know, but they are worried about what they are. They aren't really a dragon champion, they evolved. But they aren't a dragon either. They are Something. And it makes them uneasy. It makes them scared that perhaps something inside of them will one day start pulling the strings.

If they weren't forced to take their magic nap, they wouldn't do it. They are afraid of what might happen to them during it.

Airell would face the smallest and weakest version of themself with kindness and compassion. Horrible version would be treated with fear, caution and anger.

Airell is aware of all that, but they pretend it's all as insignificant as snow in Shiverpeaks 100 AE.

I wasn't tagged, just seen this template from others and wanted to try making one of my own for a long time, and of course this weird guy was the one to get it. Tagging @el-is-away <3 whoever you want; @rostomanologist shaking you; @awerzo 👀

The characters are as follows:

1. Emiel Regis Rohellec Terzieff-Godefroy — The Witcher (both the series and the third game) Major inspiration overall. An ancient humane monster, someone who helps people of his own volition and doesn't allow himself be swept by desires. A scholar, witty and not easily frightened. Posessing immense power, but choosing to be kind instead, settling with humans rather than his own kind.

I also enjoy the way higher vampires in the setting fight while in more humanoid form, or at least how it was portrayed in the game — using elongated nails/claws that can cut through steel. Eamhrys does that too a little bit, as a treat :)

2. Merlin — The Arthurian Legend (alternatively, Gandalf — Lord of The Rings, both work) It is that old man rizz and tendency to be an advisor who comes up with clever ways to escape a given situation. Mysterious wizard in comfortable clothes that comes to your rescue and guides you on an adventure. Not so much an inspiration story-wise, wouldn't know where to fit that... Though it would be fun to explore. It also amuses me to have a Merlin-inspired-ish character, when sylvari lore and characters reflect the Arthurian legend, with a sacred sword and all :D The fact both have shape-shifting abilities was a complete coincidence, but a lovely one.

They also share a name, somewhat! The character of Merlin incorporated the stories of Ambrosius Aurelianus (or Emrys Wledig in Welsh) in his legend, and shared his name. "Emrys" means "immortal", and "Eamhrys" is a different-sounding variant i came up with.

3. Iroh — Avatar: The Last Airbender A journey of a brilliant man sent to war, wrecked by grief after the loss of someone dear to him and abandoning his post. A journey of gaining clarity and finding balance between all the elements. A journey of caring, kindness and spirituality, looking after someone. A terrific mastery over fire. Determination and forgiveness. And, however amusing that may be, great love for tea, be it making or sharing it.

4. Greed — Fullmetal Alchemist (picture from Brotherhood) It was more of a subconscious inspiration, than direct, i didn't remember he existed at the time :,D However, his Ultimate Shield form design has influenced both the champion and humanoid forms of Eamhrys. Sharp claws that can cut steel, regeneration (even though it's separate from the form..), that devil face with scary fangs and teeth. Black eyes, as if posessed. Those also somewhat come from the vampire design in anime Shiki as well! But, of course, there are many examples of the same all over media.

5. Stitch — Lilo and Stitch A surprising one, huh? But his story is very fitting. An artificially created being, one made to destroy, wreaking havoc being its only purpose. A creature that has nothing except its instincts, not even fond memories to look back to in the night. Someone who struggles with their own nature at every turn, but who learns, listens and eventually finds family in those around them despite all the hardship.

Some features Stitch's design were also something i subconsciously incorporated into Eamhrys'. A lot of coincidences here :,D

6. Emmrich Volkarin — Dragon Age: Veilguard This is a recent one, yeah... The game isn't even out yet, but the vibes of this man are top notch. Exactly what i envision for my guy, if a little more reserved with wardrobe choices. A kind, respectful, caring older gentleman with somewhat creepy origins and job? Give me two.

tbh it's hard to pinpoint a specific song for airell because at this point my boy is a bit...complex. And the more i think about it, the more i realise that majority of airell songs come from blind guardian hahaha. i need to make him a character playlist, huh.
