I always try to make a calendar of these things…but then I forget where I put the calendar…and also I can’t write... Awawawa—wait! No time to mosey about thinking stormy thoughts! “GUH! Nope, don’t want it. Don’t need it. Put it in the incinerator. Drop it off a cliff. Hold a funeral for it and invite everyone you know. This box has something in there. Something foul and evil and classified as an infectious disease— Oh…it’s from Usami. That’s…better? … …this will be nice when it gets warmer out. The coat I’m wearing right now—you know…the monks, Usami, they’ve told me that I patched and sewed a lot of it myself, but they’re just making fun of me. I know they’re just making fun of me. I can’t hold anything in my skull, but I’d remember if I had that kind of skill—and everyone always has to make fun of me. This place is a frigging circus and I’m the star of the freak show. 🚦 ABOUT: the Speed Wonder

[NO SPOILERS]

since we introduced the Incredibly Strange 🦈 Gossip Wonder the other day, let's talk another New Character!

the Speed Wonder is...

...a strange, outgoing, fan-wielding girl with an "ojousama laugh" and the protagonist’s best friend. genuine and open with her emotions. (maybe a little too open.) often hard to decipher in speech, however, as she believes herself a prophet, but she’s not truly arrogant: it's all play-acting. her natural speed earned her both a job as a foot messenger and a “divine device” in the form of two cyborg legs. unfortunately, these cyborg legs were made from an old vending machine, and she often stops in the midst of talking to yell PLEASE INSERT BILL AND MAKE YOUR SELECTION in your face.

to her, this only proves that she is the “chosen one,” though for what purpose she does not know…not that she’ll admit that.

design notes:

another character (like our Groundskeeper) i knew i wanted early on, but whom i didn't figure out until relatively late in Character Dev.

one of the four characters with a divine device, including the protagonist herself, the Poet Wonder, and the Gossip Wonder. as stated before, missing limbs and organs are not unusual enough to be commented upon in AWD, but divine devices are.

beta first name is currently Senju with the kanji 扇寿 ("fan" + "longevity/long life"), for obvious reasons, but also unintentionally after Senju Kannon, the thousand-armed Bodhisattva of compassion and a form of the Chinese goddess Guanyin. (ended up fitting, though.) this one, like Six Shinoda's, could change but will probably stick

in-universe:

she's the Protag's best friend, like i said, but they've had a falling out recently. Speedy here's been seen hanging out a lot with the Groundskeeper and avoiding the Protag, but for what purpose?

in fact, when we first meet Speedy, our protagonist really hasn't talked to her in about a year. awkward am i right

her blood type is B!

her birthday is Nov 25th, making her a Sagittarius!

1. Which character is the tallest? Which is the shortest?

this is extremely tentative as the design process is still ongoing, but at the moment Yuwa is our tallest character, while Fubu is our shortest.

2. Which character is the womanizer?

Wisteria could seduce the bark off a tree. Six used to be a womanizer, which is a story in itself. Senju is a tease, though that's not quite the same thing: she's definitely monogamous at heart. and Reika...um, gets all her wisdom from an ancient (c. 2014) PUA book. so there's the spectrum. enjoy

3. Which character looks physically weak, but is surprisingly strong?

Izumo is a seemingly delusional shortstack who's been on the run most of her life and plays with works with dead bodies, so while it's not unusual that she's tough, it is strange that she could toss the gigantic Yuwa over her head if she wanted to do so. she calls this "princess strength." it comes from "fairy dust" and "the royal guns." to be frank, most folks just assume she huffs formaldehyde like bath salts until she becomes Florida Man mighty. the truth is both more and less strange, if you can believe it...but that's a revelation another day, no?

(note: these questions will focus mostly on the student characters, because throwing Usami and other figures into the mix makes things complex fast.)

1. Which characters would get good grades?

Reika, despite being the warlord (lady?) of a post-apocalyptic biker gang, is surprisingly responsible, if absent-minded. Yuwa is a slow but steady learner. Veritas would probably explode his heart with uppers if it meant staying up long enough to study and beat everyone out on an exam.

so, those three, mainly. Six also would in her current stage of life but, if we're aging her down to 16 or so, then...no. she was a much, much different 16-year-old than a 20-something. you wouldn't even find her at school, very likely...

meanwhile, Senju might copy off of Suzuran only to discover that Suzuran forgot all the answers. teachers would not let them sit next to each other anymore. vile bonded pair

2. Which characters have disabilities?

i hesitate to answer "Identity" questions about AWD, because i like to leave things up to fan interpretation. but! as a disabled person myself, this one is important to me. and the answer is...

it depends on what you mean by disability, because most people in AWD are casually disabled: this is a post-apocalyptic world with many half-fatal things and not a lot of consistent medical care. (and just so many weirdos who get themselves fucked up. so, so many.)

nonetheless, it's not a big deal, and unremarkable unless the disabled person in question has a divine device. in the world of AWD, you probably know quite a handful of blind or mute or limbless folks, and everyone has multiple mysteriously sickly siblings or cousins.

so! we'll stick with the visible or obvious ones, or disabilities you'd notice in the modern world:

Wisteria is constantly bleeding from the mouth or nose, as well as hiccuping, coughing, and vomiting at random intervals. she will flat-out tell you she is dying, but does not elaborate.

you, reader, might consider Fubu's "gremlins" after his military service accident something like a disability. in-universe, others might assume he really sees them. does the truth matter?

Senju has a divine device in the form of cyborg legs created from an old vending machine. she was a paraplegic after an injury as a kid, but her neighborhood pooled money to replace her legs, which is a very rare, very unusual occurrence, esp considering they're all poor down there. she's something like a local hero, though

Yuwa has a divine device in the form of a cyborg arm, as she lost the flesh one in war

Suzuran, according to Usami, had brain damage after a childhood fever, though the monks at the Monastery say Usami actually dropped her on her head as a baby. her divine device, attached to her ear, just barely soothes her insomnia and keeps her memories intact, but she has wide gaps of pure loss whenever she thinks back on her life. her insomnia and forgetfulness also get worse when she tries to leave the Monastery...

Kaname's divine device is attached to her jaw and replaces it, though it is not immediately obvious why she has it.

1. Which character is most likely to get kidnapped?

Yaeko has been kidnapped, multiple times. as a Togami, it's old hat for her. she's generally released not because the Togami Congomerate pulls up the money to break her out, but because she's taught herself to shoot off her crossbow with her "particulars." that's according to her, by the way. i don't know what that means and neither should you. i think she's probably just Too Annoying to ransom for long.

2. Which character has the biggest family?

in terms of immediate siblings, Six is...well, the sixth of thirteen. the runner up is Yaeko, as the seventh and final daughter of a seventh and final son.

3. Which character eats the least? The most?

Veritas overeats until he forgets to breathe and passes out like Gram-Gram at Thanksgiving and you have to wipe the turkey off his precious, angry little unconscious face. good night sweet prince.

Kaname eats the least: in fact, no one's seen her eat at all, and she dislikes doing it. many assume she pulls the "Trick of Saint Shinguji" with which she can presumably slight-of-hand a meat bun or something past her divine device. others (like Senju) figure she's been touched by the gods and no longer requires sustenance at all. only Yuwa's gotten close enough to her to know the truth.

4. Which non-related characters have known each other the longest?

Senju and Suzuran are childhood friends. while Senju may live a day's run from the Monastery way down at the bottom of the mountain, she's stayed with Suzuran often over the years. 🎸 ABOUT: the Marine Life Wonder

i've introduced a bunch of ladies lately, including yesterday's 🚦 Speed Wonder. it's high time we talk about another lad, like...

...the 🎸 Marine Life Wonder! this boy is...

...a guitar-player from a distant shoreline who prefers a simple and quiet life. extremely, extremely does not want to be bothered. if you ask for his view on anything, he will explain he’s too inexperienced and stupid about any topic but the ocean and guitars to know much. if you somehow get him to open up more than a little, he’ll talk about his father with great love, but otherwise nothing useful. abrasive. nonetheless, the Clockmaker is enamored with him, believing he understands more than he lets on.

design stuff:

his temporary first name is Melv. AWD ostensibly takes place in Japan, though a far-flung version of it with a whole mixture of name types. "foreign" names are still rather rare, however, which makes "Melv" rather notable

foreigners themselves are rarer still, though not completely unknown. Melv is AWD's, but very much unlike our friend Miss Sonia from across time. where's he from, anyway?

strangely, he has a protagonist ahoge...? what's that all about

his birthday is January 15th, making him a Capricorn!

as said above, this character's beta name is Senju (扇寿) the Excellent, also known as Senju Excellence if she's forced to have a family name.

her favorite Saint is Chiaki Nanami, whom she saw as a grand adventurer, and to whom she "speaks" on a constant basis. (Senju's just praying, really, but she believes herself divine, so, y'know.)

🚦 ABOUT: the Speed Wonder

since we introduced the Incredibly Strange 🦈 Gossip Wonder the other day, let's talk another New Character!

the Speed Wonder is...

...a strange, outgoing, fan-wielding girl with an "ojousama laugh" and the protagonist’s best friend. genuine and open with her emotions. (maybe a little too open.) often hard to decipher in speech, however, as she believes herself a prophet, but she’s not truly arrogant: it's all play-acting. her natural speed earned her both a job as a foot messenger and a “divine device” in the form of two cyborg legs. unfortunately, these cyborg legs were made from an old vending machine, and she often stops in the midst of talking to yell PLEASE INSERT BILL AND MAKE YOUR SELECTION in your face.

to her, this only proves that she is the “chosen one,” though for what purpose she does not know…not that she’ll admit that.

design notes:

another character (like our Groundskeeper) i knew i wanted early on, but whom i didn't figure out until relatively late in Character Dev.

one of the four characters with a divine device, including the protagonist herself, the Poet Wonder, and the Gossip Wonder. as stated before, missing limbs and organs are not unusual enough to be commented upon in AWD, but divine devices are.

beta first name is currently Senju with the kanji 扇寿 ("fan" + "longevity/long life"), for obvious reasons, but also unintentionally after Senju Kannon, the thousand-armed Bodhisattva of compassion and a form of the Chinese goddess Guanyin. (ended up fitting, though.) this one, like Six Shinoda's, could change but will probably stick

in-universe:

she's the Protag's best friend, like i said, but they've had a falling out recently. Speedy here's been seen hanging out a lot with the Groundskeeper and avoiding the Protag, but for what purpose?

in fact, when we first meet Speedy, our protagonist really hasn't talked to her in about a year. awkward am i right

her blood type is B!

her birthday is Nov 25th, making her a Sagittarius!
