New Zealand Fires Penguin Missile for the First Time - Published on 18/02/2025
By Ben Felton
An AGM-119 Penguin Mk 2 Mod 7 prepares to drop from a No. 6 Squadron SH-2G(I). (Royal New Zealand Navy)
The Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) has fired one of its AGM-119 Penguin anti-ship missiles for the first time since acquiring the weapons more than a decade ago.
A No. 6 Squadron SH-2G(I) Super Seasprite helicopter fired the Penguin missile as part of workups for HMNZS Te Kaha (F77)’s deployment to the Arabian Gulf to participate in Combined Task Force 150 (CTF150). The Seasprite-Penguin combination represents the entire surface strike capability of the RNZN’s two Anzac class frigates as, unlike the Royal Australian Navy, the RNZN has opted not to outfit its frigates with organic anti-ship missiles.
The helicopter, one of only five operational airframes in the RNZAF fleet, will perform Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) and Force Protection functions while deployed with Te Kaha in the Gulf.
The RNZAF’s fleet of Super Seasprites is scheduled to be replaced by new maritime combat helicopters following their planned withdrawal from service in 2028. Competitors include the NH-90 NATO Frigate Helicopter, the AW159 Wildcat, the MH-60 Romeo and a modified version of Bell’s 412EP utility helicopter.
youtube
New Zealand ordered an undisclosed number of AGM-119 Mk 2 Mod 7 missiles from Kongsberg in 2013 to replace decades-old AGM-65 Maverick missiles in the anti-ship role. While deliveries presumably occurred in the years following the announcement, the recent firing is the first time that the RNZAF has fired one of its AGM-119 Penguin missiles.

The inaugural firing of a Penguin follows a similar event at the end of 2023 when HMNZS Te Mana (F111) fired two Sea Ceptor missiles in the East Australian Exercise Area. That was the first time since 2012 that the RNZN had fired any air-defence missile. The last time an air-to-surface missile was fired appears to have been in 2008 when a now-retired SH-2G(NZ) fired two AGM-65 Mavericks.
Both Sea Ceptor and Penguin will play critical roles in protecting HMNZS Te Kaha during its six-month deployment to the Arabian Gulf and CTF150.

Leonardo and New Zealand Industry Sign MoU for Maritime Helicopter Replacement Programme
Leonardo is collaborating with New Zealand industry – including the development of Small to Medium Enterprises – through a set of comprehensive Memorandum of Understandings (MoU). The MoU outlines technical and programme support, operations, maintenance and job creation, which will foster a symbiotic relationship as part of Leonardo’s offer for the country’s MHR programme with its latest-generation AW159 multi-role helicopter. Further to the signings on 20 March, Leonardo was joined by Beca Applied Technologies, Core Aviation, Marops, Redfort Logistics Group and United Machinists. The MoUs are in recognition of the need to build resilience into the NZDF’s operations for the future through the country’s growing industrial capability. Within the anticipated MHR framework, Leonardo is offering the establishment of a Wildcat Support Centre (NZ) for the AW159 helicopters.

Philippines Navy Installed Heavy Machine Guns on Its AW-159 Wildcat Anti-submarine Helicopters
The Western Command Public Information Office (WESCOM PIO) of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has confirmed a significant upgrade to the arsenal of the Philippine Navy's AW159 Wildcat Anti-submarine Helicopters. Vice Admiral Carlos PN, Chief of WESCOM, personally oversaw the inspection of the onboard .50 caliber heavy machine gun, marking a crucial milestone in the Navy's Antisubmarine Helicopter Acquisition Project. Vice Admiral Carlos, leading the Technical Inspection and Acceptance Committee (TIAC) for the Philippine Navy, brings invaluable naval aviation expertise to ensure the helicopter's weapon systems align with the AFP’s operational requirements. The recent in-flight test firing of the heavy machine gun at the Marine Base Gregorio Lim firing range in Ternate, Cavite, underscores the commitment to readiness and capability enhancement within the Philippine Navy.

Might or might not replace my AW159 OC, that is Max. (The helicopter spy I made for C.H.R.O.M.E)
Why? I do have plans to develop another OC for C.H.R.O.M.E, except they are an airplane. Yeah, these 2 can work side-to-side but I sometimes feel like my dumb-ass mind didn't realise a helicopter wouldn't be THAT useful for spies. If I ever do replace him, he will still be there but instead he is working for the Royal navy.
But it's still just a "might" and I haven't fully confirmed about it..
I don't know, what you guys think? Would you like him to work as a spy in C.H.R.O.M.E or prefer him to in the british navy?
