I’m back again with my School Spirits posts, but I spent ages wondering why Mr Martin looked familiar and then it hit me at like 2am that he was Eddie in Desperate Housewives

something about b7 i really enjoy but can't quite articulate is its consistent portrayal of the machine (an umbrella term) as the vehicle, the goal, and the subject of exploitation, all at once.
the closest i can manage is this: when i say 'the machine', i mean the role of technology in the plot, its in-universe role in the federation's regime and its role as a metaphor. technology-the-object, technology-the-tool and technology-the-narrative if you will.
it's not subtle. it's technically there before the show even begins because of blake's conditioning functionally erasing a portion of his person, but it doesn't become prevalent until blake's trial, which is carried out by a computer and is over in seconds. it's in the images of mechanized torture and brainwashing, where the machine comes in direct opposition with the concept of identity and personal choice. it's the basis of the liberator's design, which mirrors the ideals of the society that built it. it's in the empty eyes of mutoids (the perfect person for the federation is the one in the likeness of a machine?) and the gnarly, unwieldy design of travis' prosthetics. it's there when the federation replaces avalon with a robot and it's there when avon is tricked into seeing blake on terminal. it's in orac and in zen. and in a weird way it's also in servalan's whole character.
it borders on cliche, but the way it keeps coming back is oddly compelling. the machine is sterile and sophisticated. the machine is brutal and hostile. the machine is impersonal. the machine is a person. it knows all about you. it knows nothing. it's the propagandized ideal, the system of oppression, the executioner, the victim. i forgot what my point was. i guess it's that it is. interesting? indicative of time and place in history of the genre? representative of the sources of inspiration? gives off psychological horror vibes? I'm losing my mind

It has been brought to my attention that there is a rather surprising interest in the day-to-day ongoings of various farmers of a certain small town. While I am curious as to how there are so many instances of the same town, I do not have the time nor mental capacity to ponder the implications. Allow me to introduce myself. I am Avon, the new owner of Eridanus Farm on the outskirts of Pelican Town. Given the free time that I now find myself with, despite the task of bringing a run-down farm back to the standards my grandfather set, I have seen fit to keep a log of my life here in Pelican Town. I shall endeavor to keep on top of this journaling, but do forgive me if I fall behind on my chronicling.

I can absoutely see Mickey going in for all the free samples, ignorning the ehalthy samples and going straight for the meat and cheeses. He does like the sample of beer he got to try, but he won't buy it. It's just too expensive for that hipster shit when he can get an old style for cheaper. Only Ian knows this, but Mickey has a soft spot for the flower arrangements. Sometimes, he'll wander off and get Ian some of the flowers, if he's feeling like it. (Sometimes the flowers are too damn ugly and he can't help it. Or he hates the lady who asks if its for his wife)
Samples Aside, Mickey likes to secretly compliment the pitbulls he sees at the market. Ian catches him complimenting them out the corner of his eye.
Ian loves all the veggies. He loves talking about gardening tips, and about things he can do like bird feeders and beehives, and everything to make healthy organic food. He embraces the gardening lifestyle and even gets one of those hats, which makes Mickey laugh. He also likes the soaps and bathbombs, and all the kitchsy homemade stuff. Ian finds a blanket that is like the one on the Gallagher couch and buys it immediately.
Eventually, Mickey starts to really appreciate the craft work of some of the artists who do shit like wood burning, or metal stuff. But doesn't care for that "grandma knitted crap."
Calli it's comet! On the topic of farmers markets, HC for our fav boys at the farmers market?
Hi Comet! 💖
I’ve been terrible at answering asks lately (sorry for anyone who sent one that I haven’t answered) but this one speaks to me.
Mickey loves: anything with free samples. Anything. It’s free? He’s stepping up and taking at least two or three of the samples and fixing the stall owner with a look if they say anything. If there’s cheese or meats, he’s dragging Ian through the crowds so they can get the first samples. He also likes the flower stalls. Especially looking at all the arrangements and comparing them to their wedding. Did you know? It’s not as good as what they had. He’s also a fan of the local beer stall even though it’s SO EXPENSIVE as he complains loudly. Somehow he manages to wrangle free bottles. Ian thinks the owner has a thing for Mickey.
Ian loves: fresh fruit and vegetables. He’s asking them for tips and suggestions. He’s offering Mickey samples enthusiastically and Mickey does not want fresh veggies and fruit but he lets Ian feed him even though it’s very gross (“why can’t they fry this shit in cheese or something?!”) He also loves the handmade things - like decorative stuff? candles, cooking aprons, pillow cases. He likes looking at this stuff they’re probably not going to buy but it’s nice. Nice bath stuff - maybe there’s a stall with special soap and he’s just gotta try it because it smells so good. And obviously, I love @iandarling’s idea that he loves olive oil.
What does everyone else think? 👀

Welcome to the 47th installment of 15 Weeks of Phantom, where I post all 68 sections of Le Fantôme de l’Opéra, as they were first printed in Le Gaulois newspaper 115 yeas ago.
In today’s installment, we have Part II of Chapter 20, “Le Commissaire de police, le vicomte et le Persan” (The Commissary of Police, the Vicomte, and the Persian).
This section was first printed on Tuesday, 7 December, 1909.
For anyone following along in David Coward's translation of the First Edition of Phantom of the Opera (either in paperback, or Kindle, or from another vendor -- the ISBN-13 is: 978-0199694570), the text starts in Chapter 19, “Since the crowd around the two Directors and Inspector Mifroid were observing an impressive silence, Richard went on,” and goes to, “In fact, it’s all very simple once you’ve realized that it’s all about getting the work of the police done by people who are not members of the force!”
There are some differences between the Gaulois text and the First Edition. In this section, these include (highlighted in red above):
1) Chapter 20 in the Gaulois text is Chapter 19 in the First Edition, etc.
2) Compare the Gaulois text:
répond-il
Translation:
he replies [here Leroux used the historical present]
To the First Edition:
répondit-il
Translation:
he replied
3) Compare the Gaulois text:
qui, cependant, n'auraient point protesté
To the First Edition:
qui, cependant, n'eussent point protesté (here Leroux used the imperfect subjunctive)
Translation:
Both mean: who, however, would not have protested
4) This sentence appeared in the Gaulois text, but was omitted from the First Edition:
de voix d'homme dans la loge de la diva
Translation:
of the man’s voice in the diva’s dressing room
5) This text did not appear in the Gaulois, and was added to the First Edition:
et certainement le magistrat eût mis fin à ces propos désordonnés, dont nous avons donné un aperçu dans la première partie de ce récit
Translation:
and certainly the Magistrate would have put an end to these incoherent ramblings, which we have outlined in the first part of this account
6) This text did not appear in the Gaulois, and was added to the First Edition:
— A la sortie du théâtre ?
— Oui, monsieur le commissaire.
— Toutes vos dispositions étaient prises pour cela ?
— Oui, monsieur le commissaire.
— La voiture qui vous a amené devait vous emporter tous les deux. Le cocher était prévenu… son itinéraire était tracéà l'avance… Mieux ! Il devait trouver à chaque étape des chevaux tout frais…
— C'est vrai, monsieur le commissaire.
Translation:
“When the crowd was leaving the theatre?”
“Yes, M. Commissary.”
“All of your arrangements had been made for this?”
“Yes, M. Commissary.”
“The carriage that you took was to carry you both away. The coachman was informed … his route was mapped out in advance… What’s more, there were to be fresh horses at each stop along the journey…”
“That’s true, M. Commissary.”
7) Compare the Gaulois text:
… il s'est jeté dans sa voiture qui a fourni une course furibonde à travers Paris.
Un cri rauque s'échappe de la bouche crispé de rage du malheureux jeune homme.
Translation:
… “he jumped into his carriage, which raced furiously across Paris.”
A hoarse cry, contorted with rage, escaped the lips of the wretched young man.
To the First Edition:
… il s'est jeté dans sa voiture qui a fourni une course furibonde à travers Paris.
— A travers Paris ? râla le pauvre Raoul… Qu'entendez-vous par à travers Paris ?
— Et hors de Paris…
— Hors de Paris… quelle route ?
— La route de Bruxelles. »
Un cri rauque s'échappe de la bouche du malheureux jeune homme.
Translation:
“… he jumped into his carriage, which raced furiously across Paris.”
“Across Paris?” groaned poor Raoul… “What do you mean by ‘across Paris’?”
“Out of Paris…”
“Out of Paris … which road?”
“The road to Brussels.”
A hoarse cry escaped the lips of the wretched young man.
8) Minor differences in punctuation and capitalization.

how did you get into sims content creating & stay consistent?
Hi!
I believe my ability to be so consistent in having content ready to go every day comes from my content being very broad and covering a lot of sectors of the Simblr community.
I make lookbooks, cc finds, I have a story going with Molly, building/interior inspiration, build uploads, tips & tricks, all that stuff. My page truly does offer so much, so I'm able to switch lanes whenever I feel like it without experiencing burnout or feeling bored with my content.
If I get bored with Molly, which I do sometimes, I then go build something, i.e. Avon Cottage. When I get bored of the cottage aesthetic of building, I switch back to Molly's modern apartment style. I have so many avenues that if I get bored, I can simply do something else.
Does that work for everyone? Absolutely not. But as a creative (and someone who daydreams all day everyday), it definitely comes easier.
So, at the end of this ramble, my best tip is to find something that works for you because everyone is so different. This is what has worked for me though!

a couple of my ocs that are based off of music and musicians :3
Tumblr media
Brandy’s appearance is based off of one of my favorite singers, Katie Jane Garside!
Tumblr media
And Violet’s appearance is inspired by Joan Jett :D she’s also named after the song ‘Violet’ by Hole.
There are more, smaller references… for instance, Avon is named after the Queens of the Stone Age song ‘Avon’, Bowie is named after David Bowie, of course, and April’s name is a reference to the Animal Collective song ‘April and the Phantom’ :3 honestly I think paying these small homages to things I like is really fun, so I just wanted to ramble about it.

Only in the raging fury of passion could their hearts learn to forgive…
This©️1986 (Avon) is a hefty 500 pg adventure along the Spanish Main in the latter 17th century. It cannot be classified as a bodice ripper as there was no non-con between the MMC/FMC. Never fear, however, a few bodices experienced unscheduled rapid disassembly much to the delight of all parties involved.
Shirlee, like many romance authors of her day, tends to ramble on and on and repeats herself — so this would be improved immediately if 75k words were slashed right off the top. All in all, however, a better than average example of the mid-80s pirate romance.
And that Elaine Duillo cover is *chef’s kiss* 🔥

like @avonsnumberonefan said, I don't believe Blake feels fear at all. he acts like someone who has an intellectual grasp of danger but no corresponding emotional response.
Blake's treatment of Avon in the first half of s01 is also. not manipulative per se, but socially shrewd? he goes, 'here's a guy with trust issues; let's take nothing he does for granted and thank him every time. oh, he's an individualist? let's give him space, make him feel appreciated, vital. his self-determination is crucial to his identity? cool, let's highlight the importance of personal choice as one of our team's core values and reinforce it at every turn. he asks if he has a choice? answer yes, without delay. of course you have a choice, Avon, you always do.'
Blake's lack of fear seems pathological in nature, it could be the courtesy of his brainwashing, or maybe he just is this way. but in Avon's case it's handy for defusing situations like this one. Avon's not a danger to them; conversely, they are not a danger to him.

my favorite part of blake's 7 so far is this scene where avon points an alien gun at blake and jenna but they just look mildly annoyed and leave and he stands there like a fucking idiot
