AV Design for Different Environments: Applying AVIXA Standards in Various Settings
The quality and functionality of audiovisual systems can vary greatly depending on the environment they are designed for. To ensure AV systems meet the needs of different settings, the Audiovisual and Integrated Experience Association (AVIXA) publishes standards and best practices guides. One such standard is the Standard Guide for Audio visual Systems Design which provides guidelines for designing, installing and testing AV solutions across multiple venue types. This blog post will explore how the AVIXA standards can be applied when designing AV systems for corporate, education, healthcare and house of worship environments.
Tumblr media
Corporate AV Design
The corporate environment presents unique challenges for AV designers due to its fast-paced nature and need to support both internal and external collaboration. When designing AV for corporate boardrooms, conference rooms and open office spaces, some key aspects of the AVIXA standards to consider include:
Supporting multiple simultaneous uses of the same space. Corporate rooms are often used for different types of meetings throughout the day requiring easy and quick system setup changes.
Enabling remote and hybrid meetings. AV systems need integrated videoconferencing capabilities and wireless presentation options to facilitate virtual participation.
Providing flexible audio solutions. Microphones, speakers and audio processing need to address variances in room size, furniture layouts and meeting types from small private calls to large presentations.
Incorporating user-friendly control. Intuitive and centrally managed control solutions are important for ease of operation by untrained users across different rooms.
Accounting for ambient noise levels. Noisy office environments necessitate acoustic treatments and audio pickup arrangements that factor in peripheral noise.
By applying the relevant guidelines from the "Standard Guide for Audiovisual Systems Design", corporate AV can be seamlessly integrated to meet the fluid, tech-savvy needs of modern business.
Education AV Design
When designing AV for classrooms, lecture halls, auditoriums and other learning environments, education poses unique considerations compared to other sectors. Key aspects of AVIXA standards applicable to education include:
Supporting a variety of teaching styles. Rooms need to enable everything from traditional lectures to small group work requiring an adaptable layout.
Facilitating collaborative and interactive learning. AV should incorporate technologies like interactive whiteboards, student response systems and wireless presentation that foster engagement and participation.
Accounting for acoustics of large rooms. Larger classrooms pose challenges in ensuring even audio coverage and intelligibility requiring acoustic modeling and treatment.
Enabling distance and blended learning. Streaming and recording capabilities allow students to participate remotely or access lessons asynchronously.
Prioritizing usability. Systems must be simple for teachers to operate with minimal training impacting lesson flow as little as possible.
Considering long-term technology upgrades. Education AV undergoes frequent refreshes requiring future-proofing and flexibility in the core system design.
Adhering to relevant sections of the "Standard Guide for Audiovisual Systems Design" ensures education AV optimizes the learning experience both in-person and remotely.
Healthcare AV Design
Within clinical settings, safety, privacy and reliable functionality take priority over other concerns when implementing AV. Key standards to reference include:
Utilizing secure, HIPAA compliant audio and video technologies. All healthcare AV must protect private health information from unauthorized access.
Designing for infection control. All equipment and interfaces should be easily sanitized as viruses can spread through shared surfaces.
Optimizing for ambient noise in treatment areas. Medical environments like operating rooms demand high-fidelity audio that rises above background chatter and equipment noise.
Supporting telehealth and virtual consultations. Trends indicate growing remote healthcare dependence requiring robust, user-friendly virtual meeting capabilities.
Prioritizing reliability over advanced features. Failure is not an option as lives may depend on AV systems performing consistently with minimal downtime.
Accommodating mobile devices. Bring-your-own practices require easily integrated BYOD wireless streaming and control capabilities.
Adhering to applicable sections of the "Standard Guide for Audiovisual Systems Design" ensures healthcare AV solutions minimize risk while facilitating patient-provider interactions.
House of Worship AV Design
When designing audiovisual systems for religious congregations, adapting the spiritual mission and values of the organization must be a top consideration. Relevant AVIXA guidelines include:
Accounting for acoustics of sanctuaries which can pose unique reverberation challenges requiring specialized placement of speakers, microphones and processing.
Enabling remote access to services and content for those unable to attend in-person, increasingly important post-pandemic.
Prioritizing intuitive, usable systems that don't distract from the sense of sacred space or core religious functions like sermons, songs and prayers.
Supporting livestreaming capabilities for wider reach during services but also options to securely record, store and access content online as needed.
Accommodating simultaneous translations if applicable through integrated translation systems.
Future proofing with flexible expansion ability as congregations and facility needs change over time.
Adherence to sections covering acoustics, remote participation and usability in the "Standard Guide for Audiovisual Systems Design" helps house of worship AV effectively serve their spiritual purpose.
Conclusion
Applying relevant guidelines from standards like the "Standard Guide for Audiovisual Systems Design" published by AVIXA ensures quality audiovisual solutions tailored to the unique needs of different environments from corporate to education, healthcare and houses of worship. Adhering to best practices benefits users, integrators and AV equipment alike by promoting functionality, reliability and experience over the lifetime of a system. Proper application of standards leads to AV designs that positively impact key activities in their respective settings.

Three Reasons to Work with a Certified Integrator for Your AV Projects
If your organization is considering AV solutions, what's also worth considering is who will implement those solutions. Although AV technology is designed to be simple on the user's end, it's anything but for installers and designers. For this reason, most companies and schools trust their AV project to a certified integrator. Certified AV integrators are industry veterans, capable of matching a client's needs to the most effective AV solutions available. Certification is important for AV companies, and when looking for AV integration services, you'll want a certified team. There are several reasons for this, but we've included the three most important. Reason One: Certified AV Integrators are Experts in AV Solution Design and Installation The AV integration process consists of several steps and involves much more than just installation. AV solutions are complex, with many technologies working together to create a seamless audio and visual experience. It's impossible to craft that experience without extensive planning and design processes in place. While AV technicians attain certification, they learn what planning and design best practices look like, and how to implement them for clients. For example, this is the curriculum on AVIXA's Certified Technology Specialist (CTS) exam: - Creating AV solutions - Creating an optimal AV solution starts with understanding the client's needs and how to solve them with AV. That's why, during CTS certification, the technician learns how to run a needs analysis meeting and perform an initial site survey. This provides technicians the starting knowledge they need for a project - knowledge like the quality of the building's lighting and acoustics, as well as its layout and seating arrangement. Once this information is gathered, the technician designs the solution. This includes selecting the right technologies for the job, determining placement locations, and establishing connectivity between all AV system elements. - Implementing AV solutions - Once the project is designed, it needs to be implemented. CTS students therefore learn how to properly position and mount hardware, run all necessary cables, and account for any facility-related obstacles along the way. During certification, technicians also learn how to operate various AV solutions and configure them to the client's specifications. - Servicing AV solutions - CTS certification also focuses on post-installation maintenance and support. So, CTS students learn how to solve a variety of technical problems using logical, efficient troubleshooting. During certification, students will also learn how to do this during a live event, when speed is critical. AVIXA (Audiovisual and Integrated Experience Association) is the leading trade association for the AV industry, and its CTS certification track is one of the most popular, as a result. That means if you're working with a certified AV firm, you're working with people educated in every part of the integration process. What does this extra education and experience mean? More consistent and more efficient integration processes. Reason Two: Certified Integrators Have Unmatched AV Product Knowledge In addition to their process knowledge, certified integrators are also experts in AV hardware and equipment. In fact, many AV technicians are certified in certain AV brands or technologies, giving them an edge during product selection, installation, configuration, and maintenance. Vendor specialists are extremely useful if your organization prefers a certain AV brand. For example, if your business prefers any of the following vendors, know that there are AV integrators certified in these vendors’ products: - Crestron - Poly - Extron - AMX - Cisco - Shure - Biamp - Planar When technicians attain vendor-specific certifications they're learning everything about the company's ecosystem. That includes learning about the vendor's solutions and how those solutions can meet a client's AV needs. Vendor-certified technicians are also the people to turn to for in-depth product knowledge and training. Given their value to an AV team, integrators typically staff multiple vendor-certified technicians so they can offer a wider range of solutions. Reason Three: A Certified AV Integrator Can Support Your Long-term Technology Needs Certified AV integrators are motivated to support long-lasting relationships and collaboration between integrator and client. This starts by applying best practices (technically and ethically) to every integration project. And it doesn't end when the hardware is installed. Following integration, certified AV firms can provide ongoing maintenance and technical support to their clients. With a maintenance agreement in place, a certified integrator becomes the organization's go-to option for technical support. A maintenance agreement also establishes a schedule for preventative maintenance, which is critical for maintaining system uptime. Additional training and help with AV equipment-related logistics (warranties and shipping) are also standard additions to an AV maintenance contract. It's difficult for companies to dedicate in-house staff to AV system maintenance and working with a certified integrator means your organization won't have to. In this way, a certified integrator is a technology partner for their client - a technology partner that your company can call on when it's time to make additions or changes to your existing AV solutions. If there's an AV product out there that could serve your needs better, a certified integrator will help you identify and integrate it faster. Certified Integrators are the Leaders in AV Technology and Solutions AV integration has always been a complex process because it's complex work pushing the frontiers of audio and video. AV integration has become more complicated in recent years, though, as there are more solutions available than ever before. It's a challenge to remain on top of the industry's offerings and practices, but AV technicians manage it by attaining (and maintaining) certification. Your organization can leverage this expertise for your own AV projects, ensuring a more efficient and more effective solution. Read the full article

You're assuming that you'd use a PA system to do this. We have one viewer (Mr. Yankovic) who needs to hear the audio, so our coverage area is actually quite small. You could set up a system where Mr. Yankovic's television is fed by a video system on site, and the audio is streamed via IP or RF to a receiving device at his location, where it can then be reproduced with loudspeakers, headphones, IEMs, whatever. This has the added benefit of not requiring a large delay (of about 10 seconds) for the video to sync with the audio. Similar systems are employed in assistive listening devices and silent discos. This has the added benefit of not accumulating fines from the AHJ for noise pollution
P.S. refer to this standard for calculations as to display size in relation to image discernibility. TL;DR, the smallest discernible element (i.e., text) would have to be 50% the image height for a 30x40m screen at 3000m away. So you could technically watch the simpsons, but it wouldn't be a very good experience
This might come as a shock to everyone, but this plan might not be practical.
Problem: The eponymous appliance of "Frank's 2000 Inch TV" by "Weird Al" Yankovic has a rectangular screen which is 40 meters wide and 30 meters tall. Assuming for the sake of argument that Weird Al is a human being of typical visual acuity, and making reasonable assumptions about the average length of a city block, show whether Al's lyrical assertion that he can "watch The Simpsons from thirty blocks away" is credible.
Bonus: Assuming for simplicity that Frank's TV's "ninety thousand watts of Dolby sound" represents a single speaker of the stated wattage, could Al also hear the dialogue?

Exploring the Importance of Excellent Technical Support
Tumblr media
Introduction: Exploring the Importance of Excellent Technical Support
In today’s fast-evolving corporate environment, seamless audiovisual (AV) systems are not just beneficial—they are essential. However, the complexity of modern AV solutions demands more than just installation; it requires ongoing, proficient technical support to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
A report came out  from an industry magazine called System Contractor News that showed that within the commercial integration business (Audio, Video and Collaboration), integrators by a vote of almost 3:1 valued quality technical support over any other vendor provided service. In short what the numbers showed was that as value added resellers, we are more interested in great service than low prices or specialized logistics support.
While our industry, similarly to many other industries says we are more interested in service than price, we often find ourselves in a tough predicament of trying to have both. In fact, with our interests always being in serving our customers, we often lump quality into the same conversation meaning we are trying to drive the lowest price, best service and highest quality products into every job we do. When you really think about it, this starts to sound like “Mission Impossible,” as most companies know that when you go for all three you are almost always going to come up short with one.
Putting Value In Technical Capabilities.
For customers making sizable investments in their technology spaces often price is put at the top of the list when choosing a vendor.
Generally this has to do with a perception that all the potential suppliers are the same, so why not just select on price. However, this may be a mistake because in the world of integration not all players are the same and perhaps one of the great differences is in the technical support we provide.
When we started off this article we talked about how integrators weigh the importance of tech support. Basically going up the food chain we want our manufacturer and distributor partners to help us when product issues creep up (and they do). Downstream we recognize our customers expect the same from us. When a room system or device has a problem you are looking to us to provide fast and productive support.
The Critical Role of Technical Support
Technical support goes beyond troubleshooting; it involves understanding the client’s unique needs and ensuring their AV systems enhance rather than hinder their operations. A study by AVIXA highlights that organizations with access to responsive and knowledgeable technical support report higher satisfaction and reduced downtime, directly impacting productivity and the bottom line.
Case Studies of Success
Consider the experiences of leading firms featured on platforms like Inavate and SCN 50, where technical support has transformed potential AV disasters into triumphs of technology. These case studies not only illustrate the capabilities of expert support teams but also demonstrate how they are instrumental in maintaining the integrity and functionality of complex AV setups.
Forward-Thinking Strategies
The future of AV is here with technologies like AI integration and automated diagnostics, further underscoring the importance of sophisticated technical support. As AV systems become increasingly integrated with IT infrastructure, the expertise of tech support becomes more crucial in navigating these integrations smoothly and effectively.
Conclusion
Investing in high-quality technical support is not just about fixing problems—it’s about preventing them. By choosing AV solutions backed by excellent support, businesses ensure they are equipped to handle anything the future holds, making it an invaluable component of any AV strategy.
