AU Austria: Best destinations for the wives of Felipe II of Spain (It should be clarified that he was not a good husband to say)
Maria Manuela of Portugal-Countess of Tirol (1527-1569)
MarĂa Manuela was one of the surviving daughters of King John III of Portugal and Catherine of Austria, as well as being the possible heir to the Portuguese throne if her younger brother, John Manuel, died.
Her parents thought it would be a good idea to commit MarĂa Manuela to hers, her uncle Louis of Avis, Duke of Beja, but he was secretly married to a Jewess. Then they thought of her cousin, Philip of Austria, but his mother, Isabella of Portugal, already had an engagement planned for her little girl.
In the end, MarĂa Manuela was engaged to another cousin of hers, Ferdinand of Austria, son of Ferdinand of Habsburg. MarĂa Manuela left for Austria in 1543 and was received by her parents-in-law Ferdinand de ella and Anne Jagellon, the latter came to welcome her as her own daughter. The betrothed met two days later and it is known that Ferdinand considered MarĂa a beautiful, sweet and calm young woman. Half a year later the wedding was celebrated in Linz with a great ceremony, MarĂa Manuela was two years older than her husband, but Ferdinand had a more adult appearance than the sweet face of his wife. It is believed that MarĂa Manuela became pregnant on her wedding night since at the end of the year 1544 her first daughter, Catherine of Austria, was born, who would become empress consort of the Holy Roman Empire. A year later Gerardo was born, who would be Count of Tirol after succeeding his father and two years later Juan would be born, who would inherit Vorlande, in addition to being Ferdinand's favorite son.
In 1547 Fernando administered the kingdom of Bohemia by choice of his father so the family lived between Bohemia and the Holy Empire. MarĂa Manuela did not meddle in politics, but she did convince her husband to help monasteries and orphanages that did not have good conditions. She also managed some of the works that her husband collected in her cabinet, in addition to collecting some paintings of Christ and his children who were growing little by little.
In 1551 little Elena was born, who would be the favorite of her parents, but especially of her mother. In 1554 MarĂa Manuela's younger brother, John Manuel, died and a few days later her nephew, SebastiĂĄn de Avis, was born. Her sister-in-law, Joanna of Austria, was very saddened by the death of her husband, so Maria offered to stay in Austria for a time to recover from the pain. During the time that Juana was in Germany, the sisters-in-law thought of marrying little SebastiĂĄn to his cousin, Elena, who was a few years older than him and could give him children faster.
After a year of carrying out those negotiations, little Elena died unexpectedly in 1559 from asthma attacks that she had suffered for a year. The death of her daughter, her little one, devastated MarĂa Manuela that she could never recover from her death. A year after Elena's death, the Archduchess gave birth to her last son, Louis Armand, who would be a cardinal, but MarĂa Manuela could not even look at her son because she was still hurt by losing her daughter. her favorite.
In 1562 Archduke Gerard secretly married his mistress, Bianca deïżœïżœïżœMedici, who was the illegitimate daughter of Grand Duke Cosimo I de Medici. This marriage was not well seen by Ferdinand and MarĂa Manuela since Bianca was a bastard and that the marriage was an offense to the Habsburgs, but quickly Cosimo I convinced them to accept the marriage by offering a dowry considerable enough for the archdukes to accept. .
Two years later Emperor Ferdinand I of Habsburg died and the archdukes became counts of Tirol and Vorlande, but Ferdinand of Austria remained in the regency of Bohemia for a while longer and MarĂa Manuela traveled to Inner Austria with the children of she.
María Manuela's life was calm with her children and happiness came from her when in 1565 the first son of hers was born, her son Gerard, Ferdinand known as “Ferdinand the youngest” to differentiate him from her grandfather . María Manuela had a good relationship with her daughter-in-law, Bianca de’Medici, and she was the one who influenced Italian art at the Austrian court. In 1567 the countess she founded the “Manuelitas” convent in Prague where she spent her days praying with the nuns and reading the bible.
Just five years after becoming Countess of Tirol, MarĂa Manuela de Portugal was sick with tuberculosis and died two months later in the company of hers, her sons Gerard and Louis Armand. Fernando and his other son, John, were in Bohemia when they received the news of the death of MarĂa Manuela and it is known that Ferdinand shut himself up in his rooms to mourn the death of his wife, whom he would miss very much. MarĂa Manuela was buried in Innsbruck where years later her husband would be buried.
One year after the death of MarĂa Manuela, the second daughter of Archduke Gerardo was born and named MarĂa Manuela in honor of her deceased grandmother.

The estate of late country music star Charlie Daniels has sold a stake in the singer's music catalog to Bob Frank Entertainment. The stake includes tracks such as "The South's Gonna Do It (Again)" with Keith Urban on guitar, "Long Haired Country Boy" with Brooks & Dunn, "Southern Boy" with Travis Tritt, and a live version of "The Devil Went Down to Georgia." The terms of the deal have not been disclosed. Blue Hat Records is a label launched by Daniels and his manager David Corlew, while the estate is overseen by Daniels' wife, Hazel, and his son, Charlie Jr. "This transaction will be the first of many for BFE's new privately funded investment arm, Red Shark Ventures, which is focused on catalog masters," said BFE CEO Bob Frank. Hamburg Airport Transportation Guide
Tumblr media
Hamburg is the biggest city in Northern Germany and also the 8th largest of the European Union with its population of around 2 million. Hamburg Airport is the 5th busiest airport in Germany and one of the important hubs for travelers in Europe. Also, the name of the airport change to the Hamburg Airport Helmut Schmidt after the former and famous German chancellor but many still call the airport just Hamburg Airport. Based on the 2018s statistics almost 20 million passengers used this airport. Today, there are flights more than 130 sessions around the world, mostly European locations. By the way, Hamburg Airport has 2 terminals, it is better to check about before arrival.
Tumblr media
Interior of the Hamburg Airport (Source). There are also low-cost airlines operates from here to different locations. Hamburg Airport is also big enough to hold wide-bodied aircraft Airbus A360. In this post, you will find detailed information about Hamburg Airport and also tips about how to go to the city center from Hamburg Airport or to close locations like Bremen, Sytl, Flensburg, Hannover and Rostock.
Where Is The Hamburg Airport?
IF you are going to Hamburg, you are lucky! Because Hamburg Airport is very close to the city center and it has various transportation options to get to the city center within a very short time. One of the traveler-friendly airport in the world! Hamburg Airport is only 10 km away from the Hamburg city center and located in the very north of it, between the 433 and 447 highways. Bremen: 130 km Sytl: 250 km Flensburg: 153 km Hannover: 172 km Rostock: 187  km
Transportation Options From/To Hamburg Airport to the Hamburg City Center
Hamburg Airport is definitely traveler-friendly! Because there is a very good settled public transportation system. It is very easy to reach the Hamburg city center from Hamburg Airport. Germany has a very good public transportation system wherever you go. It is the same for Hamburg Airport. You can choose between trains, buses, and taxis to reach the city center. I will explain each option in detail. You can buy tickets for public transportation from both offices in the airport or ticket machines. On tickets machine banknotes, changes and credit cards are working but I had a problem with my credit card. Because it says that my card didn't have German Mastercard, as expected :) Ticket prices are varying for each option and number of the passengers. Train Lines There is a very good metro line working at Hamburg Airport. I will write it in the metro subhead because Germans named it S-Bahn (metro rail network) not Regional (Conventional trains) ones. Metro and Tram Lines At the Hamburg Airport, you will directly see the sign of the metro line with the S1 S-Bahn sign. If you want to use the metro follow that signs. Actually this line part of the city metro network and not working as a direct shuttle to the city center like Viennas dobule decker shuttle train. Hamburg green metro line which name is S1 operates between the Wedel and PoppenbĂŒttel/Hamburg Airport. From the airport, it is very easy to use the S1 just buy the tickets get on but getting back to the airport you need to be careful about one thing. Each time six-car long metro leaves from Wedel. At the Ohlsdorf station, first three-car of it goes to the Hamburg Airport and last three one to the PoppenbĂŒttel. Often warning made about each at Hamburg Central Train Station and each station after it. There are only 10 stations between the Hamburg Airport and Hamburg Central Train Station which will take approximately 25 minutes. You can also get off at Barmbek, LĂŒbecker Strabe, Berliner, LandungsbrĂŒcken and Altona stations to transfer the other metro or regional lines. The average ticket price is around 3.20 euros for one adult but their different types of tickets way more economic for groups, daily or weekly tickets. It is better to check the ticket types in advance from their official website. S1 line operates on 24 hours on 10 to 20 minutes of interval, not need to worry about missing the train! If you want to use the Regional Train you should go to Hamburg Central Train or Altona Station.
Tumblr media
You will reach to the city center within 25 minutes (Source). Bus Lines There are different bus lines from Hamburg Airport to the different centers of Hamburg city and other cities in Germany. Based on my experience, the metro is the best option to use to go to the Hamburg city center from Hamburg airport but of course, you have other options. You can find detailed information about the bus lines below; Airport Express Buses Operates between 05.00 to 22.45 Departs from the bus are between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. To Ohlsdork train station (every 20 minutes) To Altona station (every 30 minutes) 2.95 Euro for one adult and 1.10 Euro for children for one-way Shuttle Buses There is only one departure daily Operates between Airport and Hamburg Central Bus Station To Hamburg Airport Terminal at 23.00 To Hamburg Central Bus Station at 23.30 Prices vary between 9.00 to 49 Euro Public Buses MetroBus 26 operates between Airport and Bf Rahlsedt 04.56 to 20.55 with 20 minutes of interval (Monday to Saturday) 05.36 to 20.57 with 20 minutes of interval (Sunday and holidays) 2.95 Euro for one adult and 1.10 Euro for children for one-way HVV Express Bus 39 operates between Airport and Wandsbek 06.08 to 22.29 with 20 minutes of interval (Weekdays) 05.59 to 22.29 with 20 minutes of interval (Saturdays) 08.30 to 22.59 with 20 minutes of interval (Sunday and holidays) 4.10 Euro for one adult and 2.40 Euro for children for one-way HVV Bus 274 operates between Airport and Ohldorf Station Only departs at night in weekends 2.95 Euro for one adult and 1.10 Euro for children for one-way HVV Bus 292 operates between Airport and Ochenzoll station 05.16 to 23.29 with 15 minutes of interval (Weekdays) 05.16 to 23.29 with 30 minutes of interval (Saturdays) 07.29 to 23.29 with 30 minutes of interval (Sunday and holidays) 2.95 Euro for one adult and 1.10 Euro for children for one-way HVV Night Bus 606 operates between Airport and GlashĂŒtte Depart at 01.40, 02.10, 02.40, 03.40 and 04.40 (Weekdays) 2.95 Euro for one adult and 1.10 Euro for children for one-way
Tumblr media
You will probably use one of the electrical buses of HVV (Source). Other Bus Lines If it is not enough for you there are bus lines to use :) Bus lines 23 (Airport to Billstedt), 34 (Airport to Kirchdorgf Sud) and 114 (Airport to Klosterstern) operates from Lufthansa Technik, located on the western part o the airport. You can reach there by taking the airport shuttle from the P9 parking which departs at every 10 minutes. Ticket prices for these bus lines are 2.95 Euro for adults and 1.10 Euro for the child in one way. FlixBus from Hamburg Airport If you want to go to the other cities from Hamburg Airport you can use FlixBus for it. You can check their website and buy the ticket in advance. It is not possible to list all lines from Hamburg Airport. For example, it takes approximately 9 hours from Hamburg Airport to Copenhagen for just 40 Euro.
Tumblr media
FlixBus operates to multiple locations from Hamburg Airport (Source). Taxis When you have so other options you probably won't need to take a taxi from the airport. But in case if you need them you can use them without any problem. The only advice that I can give you about the taxis you can arrange a fixed price if you going to a place other than the Hamburg city center. Private Transfer It is always possible to set up a private transfer from Hamburg Airport to the city center or any location. There are lots of agencies offering services. It is always better to check them in advance and get confirmation. Car Rental If you go to the Termina you will see there are lots of car rental agencies. When I went there there were Sixt, Europcar, Hertz, Avis, Enterprise and a couple of other companies there.
Pros and Cons of The Airport
Pros Very easy to reach Very close to the city center Low-cost airlines Perfectly settled public transportation system Cons Probably need a renovations and improvements  in future My suggestion for going to the Hamburg city center from the airport, use the metro line. It is cheap, fast and comfortable. I hope you will enjoy your time in the one of the best cities for Germany. Feel free to ask about the content of this post and please share your experiences. WavPack does have extended options like assist for 32 bit fp. I just do not have occasion to archive many 32 bit fp recordsdata for most tasks (the few there are don't take up enough area to matter). WavPack got here round as a format a bit too late. Already was using flac. Do not see any purpose to vary and I don't see WavPack taking over as the consumer supply format either. #4. OGG. Along with the dearth of search table inability to tell whether an OGG page is the goal one makes looking for in OGG essentially the most difficult process in comparison with all different codecs. Because the OGG header isn't sufficient to get the total audio size, it is required to learn from the top of file. This is the most annoying disadvantage of OGG format.Whether a format helps lossless audio. A lossless audio encoder compresses audio in a means that after decompression you may have a one hundred% high quality audio, precisely as the unique source. Such encoder works similar to the best way how ZIP packer compresses text recordsdata, so after you unpack it the textual content is precisely the same as it was: without any phrases missing or letters interchanged. June 6th, 2017 - Frankfurt, Germany
The time has come to bring our grand European Adventure to an end. it is befitting that it would be grey and rainy on this morning in Germany. It is as if the Country itself is sad that we are leaving. We make our rounds through the home that we rented in the small town of Rossdorf, we close all the windows, empty the trash and say farewell to Gretchen, the 70 year old tortoise that lives in the back yard. We load our things into the back of our trusty little min-van, a Ford Galaxy, that we picked up about 3 weeks ago at Ciampino Airport in Rome. We close and lock the door to the house and drop the keys in the Post Box as requested and we are off at about 9:00 am to head to the airport in Frankfurt.
The traffic around Frankfurt is a bit heavy. The GPS continually re-routes us trying to help us beat the traffic tie-ups. The trip that ordinarily should have takes us about 30 minutes takes about 40 minutes. At 9:00 am we are on the tail-end of the morning commute. Frankfurt is a very large and sprawling airport - seemingly built under the roof of one huge terminal. In spite of its size, airplanes still often must park on the tarmac and have buses retrieve the passengers. We are flying on Lufthansa on the way home, which departs from Terminal 1, but the rental car return is near Terminal 2. We will have to take the bus to Terminal 1. We make our way to the Hertz rental car return, and fortunately, it is not that busy there. The attendant points us to a space where we can park the car - a saucy lass from England is working the returns today. She quickly hands me a receipt after inspecting the car and we are off and on our way.
Here is an interesting aside - well interesting to me, but the rest of you are free to skip this paragraph. I look at the receipt and see that we drove a whopping 4,766 kilometers - for the unconverted in the USA - that’s over 2,955 miles. I am shocked, I had no idea we had driven that much. To make the math simple - if I assume we averaged 60 miles/hour that means we spent a total of 49 hours of our time in Europe driving from point “a” to point “b”. We were in Europe for a total of 27 days - if we further assume that 16 hours of each day (24 hrs / 16 awake hrs) that’s 66% of the day that we are awake and can be spent doing fun stuff. That means we had a total of (27 days x 24 hr/day x .66) 428 hours available to us for fun stuff and we spent 49 hours of them driving or a little over 10%. I decide that wasn’t a bad trade-off when I consider all the neat places we got to go and the fact that a lot of those driving moments will be unforgettable - like cheating death by driving along the Amalfi Coast and cruising through a sea of pedestrians in Bellagio. Those moments are priceless. I’m sorry I had to turn this into a math problem, but that’s just the way my strange mind works. The reason I went through all of this is because some people think that simply relying on trains or flying from point “a” to “b” is the way to go. The disadvantage to that of course is that when you get to point “b” you’re sort of stuck - sure you can take cabs or buses but if you factor in the “hassle factor” knowing us, we would have missed a lot of the really special places we got to see because we were able to simply hop in the car and go. There is also the fact that when you drive, you are setting your own itinerary and schedule - if we want to make a side trip to Volterra or Porto Venere, we can and were are certainly happy we didn’t miss these places. So, if you are a little adventurous, my recommendation is to go ahead and rent a car. It is not that tough to drive in Italy or Germany.
A little about our trusty little mini-van. When I was making plans for the trip, I had a special offer from Avis to rent a nice E class or CL class Mercedes sedan for our trip. I was all ready to go for it. I had visions of us screaming down the Autobahn at some un-Godly speed, flashing our headlights at everything in our way, but then I looked at the trunk capacity in these cars. I even suggested that everyone watch Rick Steves video on how to pack lightly for a trip to Europe. Sure we only need 1 pair of shoes and 3 changes of clothes all stuffed into a soft sided backpack. If we could all do that, we could easily fit luggage for 4 passengers in the trunk of the Benz. if your have read any of my other posts (#rick-steves-is-an-idiot) you know by now that most of the people on our little trip elected not to follow Rick’s sage advice. So I went from looking at Autobahn pavement burners to looking at soccer-mom mini-vans. This is how we ended up in the Ford Galaxy. Now after having driven it over 2,900 miles, I have to say that I have no regrets at all. Our little 4-cylinder, diesel engined van had plenty of pep and allowed us to cruise at (Elisa and Carolyn - don’t read this part) over 100 mph with ease on the Autobahns in Germany all while getting great fuel economy. The driver’s and co-pilot seats were very comfy and I never had a sore back from a long days drive. The rear seats were equally comfy - so comfy that our rear seat passengers converted some of those “awake hours” to “sleeping hours”, but then there is Trent, he starts to nod off when he simply lifts the handle to open the car door. Let’s not forget to mention the ample amount of cargo capacity in this little van. With the 3rd row seats folded totally flat we had enough room (though just barely) to accommodate Carolyn’s suitcase that we affectionately named Moby, leaving just enough room to spare for 3 other suitcases. As the trip went on, it did seem as if the number of pieces of luggage was beginning to multiply. Either there was some suitcase hanky-panky was going on back there, or it may have simply been due to the many shopping sprees Carolyn and Elisa would embark upon. Also, there was a large retractable cover that would conceal all our goodies out of sight when we parked. If I had one complaint about the Ford Galaxy, it is that the turning radius on that little mini-van was pretty horrible. Many a time what should have been a simple 3-point u-turn on street would turn into a 9-point turn. The turning radius of the car when coupled with the narrow streets we encountered, made for a lot of hand-over-hand turning of the steering wheel. All things considered, I would highly recommend a diesel Ford Galaxy to anyone that needs a comfy cruiser for 4 people and their luggage.
Reflections - Elisa:
I asked Elisa to comment on what she felt were some of her most memorable moments on this trip. The first thing that came to her mind had to do with the main reason for our trip. We had been invited to attend the wedding of her cousin Alessio. They were getting married in the same Church in the small Tuscan hill town of Suvereto where her parents got married in 1955. Elisa had a faded photograph of her parents on that wedding day in 1955 and was always surprised to see how many people seemed to be on the steps of the church as her parents were emerging after saying their vows. Elisa had always wondered who were all those people and why were they all there. Then here we were on the steps of that same church in 2017 some 62 years later and her questions would be answered. When we exited the church after Alessio and his bride Dana had finished taking their vows, we saw that the entire town had convened on the steps of the church and on the plaza in front of the church. There was a band playing music and lots of rice being thrown. Many of the people knew Alessio, but many did not - it is just what Italians do - they celebrate the important things in life. All those people were out there and we were bathed in joy their joy as we stepped out into the sun. Elisa now understood what it was that was happening in that faded photograph back taken back in 1955 and she was filled with tearful emotion. As she milled about the towns people, she actually met a woman that was standing on those steps on that very day back in 1955 and she was there celebrating the wedding of Elisa’s parents just as she was on this day in 2017, celebrating another marriage. It was clearly very emotional for Elisa.
Elisa and I have been to Italy and other parts of Europe many times. We have usually traveled with our kids or kid and their friends and each of those trips have been special to us, but Elisa really believes that this was our very best trip (so far). Traveling with my brother Trent and his wife Carolyn made it special. Even though we had been to many of the places we took Trent and Carolyn to before, re-experiencing them again with and through them made it more special for us. Like, we usually do when we travel to Italy, we visit a lot of Elisa’s relatives and by introducing Trent and Carolyn to all of them they are quickly embraced in true Italian culture, which revolves first around family and secondly around food. There were lots of both to go around.
Another highlight of this trip for Elisa is our stay in the tiny town of Grainau in the German Alps near Garmisch-Partinkirchen. We stayed at a vacation rental called Ferienwohnung-Zugspitze and our hostess Carolin did such a fine job on the accommodations and God lent a helping hand by placing the majestic Zugspitze mountain right in the backyard of our apartment. We were there for only 3 nights and we could have spent several more. It was so relaxing there. There are a number of things we would have liked to have seen but we missed - Bertchesgaden and the Eagles Nest. We would have like to have spent a day in Munich. We would have like to pay our respects at Dachau. This gives us a reason for another trip.
Lastly for Elisa, the trip was special because she was able to reconnect with her long lost high school friend Terri Rooney and meet her terrific husband Gary. Although the 2 hadn’t seen each other for over 30 years the friendship picked up right where it left off. We also got to make a great new friend in Gary, her husband of 25 years. He is a terrific guy and the only person I’ve gotten to know that has more karaoke stuff that Elisa and I have - a lot more.
Reflections - Rex
For me, I agree with Elisa that traveling with Trent and Carolyn made the trip a lot more fun, They hadn’t been to Europe before and It was great fun sharing with them some of the many things we had seen and done before. By doing it with them, we would learn so much in the process as well. The best thing about this trip is that there is so much we did not get to cram into our schedule - such as - trip up the Italian and French Rivera. We love Santa Margherita and Porto Fino. We didn’t get to take in San Tropez or Nice or Monaco. We didn’t get to venture into Switzerland. We missed Paris, the Bordeaux region and we also missed London, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. All of these could make up a nice itinerary for another trip some day.
Another highlight for me, was the different personalized tours that we took. Usually, Elisa and I would read up on a location, take information from guidebooks and then explore on our own. Our experience with Roberta in Rome has convinced us that it is well worth the extra money to find a knowledgeable and friendly guide that speaks English well. We really think it is worth the extra money to arrange for a private tour. By doing this, you and the guide can interact and she can tailor the tour to what it is that you are most interested in.
Driving in Italy - The Amalfi Coast - I never tire of seeing it and driving it. Yes the roads are narrow, the cliffs steep and the Italian drivers all think they drive Formula 1, but I am glad we got to go there again. Once again, we had great accommodations there with great views. Our dinner at La Tagliata was also a real highlight for me and if I could only name a few of my most favorite things about the trip, La Tagliata would have to be on the list. When it comes to driving, I will never forget driving into the town of Bellagio and having to wedge our car into that tiny street with pedestrians inches from our car. That was unforgettable and now that it is over, I look back on it and find it to be fun and exciting, while at the time, it may have seemed a little terrifying.
Lastly for me, I would have to put our cooking lesson with Chef Sylvia on the list. It didn’t hurt that our menu was featuring Italian Mussels that are harvested right here in La Spezia and I love mussels. But Chef Sylvia was funny and friendly and we really appreciated her opening her kitchen up to us. Even though her staff was preparing for another busy day of serving lunch to locals and tourists that flock to this Michelin rated restaurant, they made us all feel like this day and this kitchen, had been set aside just for us to learn a few of Chef Sylvia’s favorite recipes. The fact that we would get to walk the open air market with her Husband Alessandro, and shop for some of the ingredients we would use in our cooking was also a very nice touch.
I do have to cram one more highlight in here - our trek to find Carolyn’s ancestral roots was also very fun. I am so happy that we not only found the little town of Lugliano, but that we got to find a living relative our her Great-Grandfather. It was another emotionally unforgettable experience.
Closing out the trip
. Elisa and I spent spend a total of 27 days there, 23 of which were with Trent and Carolyn. We all got along well and had a great time. With all the neat places we weren’t able to fit into the busy itinerary we will surely be traveling together again at some point. A sad fact is that we have more days behind us than we have ahead of us - so we have to do it while we can. And when we do - I’ll try to write about it so that maybe I can inspire some of you to remember, that our lives are not only about working and making money - it is also about experiencing the world we live in and getting to know and help our fellow passengers on this journey we call life.
That’s all for now.

Trends of January
Hey guys đŸ‘‹đŸ» Today I'm gonna tell you the latest trends of January!! So here we go...... FASHION —‱—‱—‱—‱—‱—‱ CIRCULAR CUTOUTS It's too cold for crop tops so why not try this? BIG BAGS As much as we love a stylish mini purse, these oversize totes and bags have stolen our hearts. Also, what’s to complain about a little extra space anyway? MAKEUP —‱—‱—‱—‱—‱—‱‱ GLITTER ✹ LIPS Glitter was the eye-catching lip finish of the season, and makeup artists coated models' pouts in sparkles of varying sizes EYE GLOSS Lids were similarly shiny, slicked with an almost-wet finish. Use a sheer product to keep the eyeshadow from looking messy as it moves; this one isn't meant to be long-wearing! HAIR —‱—‱—‱—‱—‱—‱—‱—‱ BANGS Fashion month had a major brush with bangs, from wispy to sideswept to blunt. BRAIDS Braids are a runaway runway hit each season, and this time around, we witnessed them in every iteration on the catwalk. Favorites included the intricate updos tied off with yards of velvet ribbon at Erdem and the flowing Botticelli braids at Valentino — but these are all super pretty plaits worth trying, stat. YOUTUBE CHALLENGES —‱—‱—‱—‱—‱—‱—‱—‱ 1000 DEGREE KNIGE CHALLENGE Well this is an odd one, but you know youtubers their job is to do that! This is the 1000 degree knife challenge basically  you heat a knife to 1000 degrees with A LOT OF BLOWTORCHES and then you cut into things! I mean this is soooooooo stupid but REALLY FUNNY so that's that. BEST BOOKS OF THE MONTH —‱—‱—‱—‱—‱—‱—‱—‱—‱—‱ BOOK NO.1 Gr 3ïżœïżœïżœ7—Russell, author of the best-selling "Dork Diaries" series, returns with an even dorkier character. Fans may remember Max Crumbly from Tales from a Not-So-Perfect Pet Sitter. Max, who was previously homeschooled by his grandmother, is having a hard time adjusting to life at his new public school. Max's biggest problem is a bully named Doug "Thug" Thurston, who traps him in his locker right before a three-day weekend, leaving him as the only witness to the sinister activities taking place while the school is closed. The story ends on a cliffhanger, a sure sign that this is not the last of Max Crumbly. Kyle Beltran's animated portrayal of Max helps bring the text to life so listeners (almost) won't miss Russell's amusing illustrations. VERDICT Recommended for "Dork Diaries" fans. BOOK NO.2 A young boy named Otto lost in the woods is rescued by three sisters imprisoned there by a witch's curse. In return, he promises to help break the curse by carrying their spirits out of the forest in a mouth harp and passing the instrument along when the time is right. The narrative shifts to the 20th century, when the same mouth harp (aka harmonica) becomes the tangible thread that connects the stories of three children: Friedrich, a disfigured outcast; Mike, an impoverished orphan; and Ivy, an itinerant farmer's child. Their personal struggles are set against some of the darkest eras in human history: Friedrich, the rise of Nazi Germany; Mike, the Great Depression; Ivy, World War II. The children are linked by musical talent and the hand of fate that brings Otto's harmonica into their lives. Each recognizes something unusual about the instrument, not only its sound but its power to fill them with courage and hope. Friedrich, Mike, and Ivy are brought together by music and destiny in an emotionally triumphant conclusion at New York's Carnegie Hall. Meticulous historical detail and masterful storytelling frame the larger history, while the story of Otto and the cursed sisters honor timeless and traditional folktales. Ryan has created three contemporary characters who, through faith and perseverance, write their own happy endings, inspiring readers to believe they can do the same. SPORTS —‱—‱—‱— (Cricket) The ODI happened recently and India showed their real colours! ODI 1: This was at Maharashtra cricket association, Pune India won by 3 wickets which was really good! ODI 2: Barabati Stadium, cuttack India won by 15 runs also very good! ODI 3: Now this was not needed since India won the ODI series but yet did it anyway! This was at Eden Gardens, Kolkata England won by 5 runs! And that was the ODI series! So that's it for the month trends or I'll see you next month !! Xoxo Avi

REVIEW: THE IRON HEEL – JACK LONDON’S CLASSIC
Tumblr media
January 6, 2017 | Jon Dale
Jack London, the socialist author, died one hundred years ago on November 22, 1916. Probably his most well-known book, The Iron Heel, describes an epic struggle against brutal capitalism. Although fictional, contemporary events form the backdrop. The book was published in 1907, two years after the first Russian revolution was defeated. U.S. workers were joining trade unions. Big strikes took place, with the private security company, the Pinkerton Agency, infiltrating unions and recruiting thugs to violently attack picket lines. Rail union organizer Eugene Debs led the Socialist Party, receiving 88,000 votes for president in 1900, dramatically increasing this to 901,000 (6%) in 1912.
The Iron Heel describes the build-up to revolution in the USA and the ruling class’s vicious response to crush it in blood. Its central fictional device is a memoir, the Everhard Manuscript, by Avis, a professor’s daughter who marries The Iron Heel’s key character, the socialist leader Ernest Everhard. In the world of the book, her manuscript (which covers the years 1912 to 1932) was hidden and found centuries later. By way of footnotes, inserted after her manuscript is discovered, London makes clear that socialism eventually triumphed – some three hundred years later.

The book exposes the nature of capitalist society and powerfully argues for socialism. Avis initially believes the myths of capitalist justice and democracy until Ernest suggests she investigates the story of a destitute man, named Jackson. He lost an arm in a mill “accident” while exhausted, trying to save a machine from damage. The mill owners, management, foremen, lawyers and newspapers conspired to hide the truth and deny him compensation. He lost his job, too.
The contrast between Jackson’s poverty-stricken family and the bosses’ families, living off company profits, shakes Avis’s beliefs to her core. Ernest shows how capitalism works through discussions with academics, bishops, small and medium businessmen, and farmer political representatives. The oligarchs, or plutocrats – directors of the huge corporations controlling the economy, government, law, universities and the press – squeeze these middle classes. Some decide to join the working-class struggle although most continue to side with big business.
Ernest is invited to lecture to the Pacific coast’s select club – the wealthiest, most powerful “lords of society.” Although this seems too far-fetched a fictional device, it was based on Jack London’s own experience at just such an event. As the evening’s arguments roar to a climax, the owner of the mill where Jackson lost his arm speaks coldly and deliberately as he points at Ernest: “Gentlemen, there stands the bear and your buzzing has only tickled his ears
The bear has said he will crush us. What if we crush the bear?
We will not reply to the bear in words. Our reply shall be couched in lead. We are in power. Nobody will deny it. By virtue of that power we shall remain in power.” This Oligarchy is the iron heel that will stamp on working-class organisations threatening their capitalist system.
Missing from the story is much discussion between Ernest and trade union and socialist activists. What strategy and tactics were needed to defeat the plutocrats? However, there are plenty of references to workers’ struggles and developing socialist organisation, including internationally. War between Germany and the USA in 1912 is stopped by an international general strike – unlike in real life in 1914, when the mass social-democratic parties’ leaders backed the ruling classes, betraying their pre-war promises.
The second part of the book describes revolution and counter-revolution. Acute economic crisis leads to a general strike. Leaders of key trade unions do a deal giving their members significantly higher wages on condition that they break with other unions and stop further united action. Meanwhile, a strikebreaking army (the Mercenaries) is recruited from the unemployed.
Picket lines are machine-gunned. A socialist printing house is set on fire and books burned by a mob waving the American flag, singing patriotic songs. London calls them the Black Hundreds, the same name as murderous, extreme nationalist and anti-Semitic gangs operating in tsarist Russia. Fascists and agents provocateurs unleash riots and destruction, providing an excuse for regular troops to be called in to ‘restore order’. Workers’ leaders are imprisoned and executed. Conscription to militias is ordered, and they are sent to other states to suppress strikes.
Defeated in industrial action, workers turn to a political response, electing 50 socialists to Congress. However, a bomb is set off in the chamber and soldiers rush in to arrest them. Centuries later, papers are discovered revealing the police agent responsible. As a description of the Nazis’ advance to power in Germany 25 years later, London was uncannily accurate.
Despite the Oligarchy’s huge forces, socialists continue to organize in illegal underground cells and fighting groups – anticipating the second world war resistance against Nazi Germany and the regimes collaborating with it. A desperate struggle against undercover agents sent into their midst is matched by their own agents sent into the Mercenaries and other enemy organisations.
In the fictional 1917, the dictatorship deliberately instigates a premature uprising in militant Chicago, before workers elsewhere are ready to take action. The most oppressed, downtrodden masses, the ‘people of the abyss’, try to take over the city and are mown down with machine guns and shells. This echoes the July Days in Petrograd in the real 1917, where only the intervention of the Bolshevik Party prevented a defeat on the scale that London described.
Avis and Ernest Everhard do not survive to see the socialist society they strove for. But Jack London makes clear that capitalism was eventually swept away and a far superior society built in its place.
I first read this book as president Salvador Allende’s left-wing government in Chile was carrying out big reforms. In the early 1970s, left-wing Labour MPs and their international co-thinkers pointed to this as a model for “democratic socialist revolution.” But a U.S.-backed coup violently overthrew Allende’s government in 1973, rounding up socialists and trade unionists in the national football stadium, torturing and executing thousands. That convinced me to join Militant, forerunner of the Socialist Party. It had repeatedly warned of that terrible development unless the working class was mobilized to take all power from the capitalist class.
Re-reading the book, it is striking how accurately London predicted many 20th century developments: capitalist crisis, revolution, fascism following its defeat, dictatorship, and the failures of the social democratic leaders. In the 21st century, its message is just as relevant. Financial Times columnist, Martin Wolf, recently wrote, ominously: “Consider the disappointing recent performance of global capitalism, not least the shock of the financial crisis and its devastating effect on trust in the elites in charge of our political and economic arrangements. Given all this, confidence in an enduring marriage between liberal democracy and global capitalism seems unwarranted. So what might take its place? One possibility would be the rise of a global plutocracy and so in effect the end of national democracies” (August 30).
Although it does not take much imagination to see a Donald Trump-type figure as a future dictator, the working class today is potentially far stronger throughout the world than during Jack London’s life. Many of the middle classes he described are now organised in trade unions themselves. Studying the lessons from workers’ struggles can help ensure socialist victory, ending capitalist plutocracy’s exploitation and war. We should be confident his optimistic prediction of a future socialist society can be achieved much sooner than he forecast.

The start-ups trying to shake up corporate travel
Emily Arth felt that only one corporate travel agency would be able to cope with the dizzying tangle of bookings she needed to make to go to the World Economic Forum in Davos.
Dismissing the big corporate booking platforms as “archaic”, the vice-president of operations at the blockchain start-up Constellation Labs turned to TripActions as she tried to juggle changing schedules against tight hotel and flight availability. “We really needed some sort of a travel service,” she said.
Four-year-old TripActions, which raised $250m last week from the likes of Andreessen Horowitz, giving it a $4bn valuation, claims it can predict travel preferences by combing through the past bookings of employees, and that it will automatically rebook flights if schedules change, and ping the new details to customers. As a result, it says it has cut the time spent booking the average business trip from an hour to six minutes.
It is one of a number of start-ups trying to change the way that companies book their travel and take a slice of spending that was estimated at $1.3tn in 2017 according to the Global Business Travel Association.
They are part of a widespread trend to “consumerise” business services, said Frederic Court, founder of the venture firm Felix Capital.
“Employees want [corporate travel agents] to be as good as consumer apps on your phone and as enjoyable. There are so many simple apps that have grown to support business but were designed for individuals,” he said, pointing to WhatsApp calls and Google Drive, which are now used across many multinational companies.
Felix Capital invested in travel management platform TravelPerk last year as part of a $25m funding round. It is one of many start-ups offering all-round travel agent services to attract attention from investors.

New York-based Rocketrip also encourages employees to book cheaper hotels and flights by rewarding them with the savings they create. It raised $15m in a funding round led by Google Ventures in April 2018. TravelBank, which offers a similar service, raised $25m the year before. Lola, a travel management software provider, raised $37m in April. At the time it said that revenues were up 786 per cent on the year before.
The opportunity for start ups lies in a highly fragmented corporate travel market. The biggest incumbent in the UK is American Express Global Business Travel, which has around 17 per cent of market share, but turns over 1.5 times as much as its nearest competitor, according to trade publication Buying Business Travel.
But the big players are investing in improving their own platforms.
Mark Okerstrom, chief executive of Expedia, said that Egencia, the company’s corporate booking arm, was one of his focuses for growth.
“Last year, they did about $8bn of bookings. We think that business should be two, three times as big as it is,” he said.
Airbnb also launched a business platform in 2014, which it said had almost doubled the number of employees using it between 2017 and 2018 to 700,000.
Incumbents note that some of the smaller players may not be able to afford the costs of running extensive customer service.
“[Travel] is complex, global, has inherent risk, and affects employees’ physical and emotional wellbeing — so you still need people,” said David Thompson, chief information technology officer at American Express GBT.
I realised there are so many business solutions for travel but none were targeting people who wanted [to stay for] a two-, three-, four-month period
Avi Meir, founder of TravelPerk, conceded that around half of his employees work in customer support, which Mr Meir said is costly but “one of the best expenses we do.” One agent recently spent two hours on the phone to a panicked employee who missed a Eurostar on the way to a key meeting. He noted, however, that this cost deters bigger tech firms from entering the market. “The reality is Google definitely doesn’t want to do customer support,” he said.
Mr Thompson also said that since many of the start-ups were “hyper-focused” on specific regions, or on small parts of the business travel vertical, they were unlikely to “disrupt on a large scale”.
Several apps have nonetheless found lucrative niches. The taxi app Gett differentiated itself from Uber and Lyft by focusing on corporate customers. It achieved a $1.5bn valuation at its last funding round in May.
Meanwhile, Homelike spotted a gap in the market for providing accommodation to long-stay employees, such as graduate trainees on secondments abroad.
The company was founded by Dustin Figge after his employer at the time, Bertelsmann, put him up for six weeks in a hotel when he relocated to San Francisco from Germany.
“I realised there are so many business solutions for travel but none were targeting people who wanted [to stay for] a two-, three-, four-month period,” he said.
Homelike arranges apartments for trips over 30 days and up to two years.
Interest from investors has also been driven by the expectation that older corporate travel firms will start acquiring start-ups to freshen up their platforms. But timing will be key. Moving into business travel at this point in the economic cycle is a risk.
“Corporate travel is more volatile across the sector and in a recession business travel comes off”, said George Moss, a partner at private equity firm ECI, which recently sold out of the corporate travel firm Reed & Mackay.
He added that ECI would only invest again in a corporate travel business if it could show it would be resilient in an economic downturn.

Millennials Aren’t as Bad as You Think and 6 Other Tourism Trends This Week
Millennial business travelers actually spend less than many people suspected. Visitors take a selfie at the exhibition stand of the Maldives at the International Tourism Trade Fair (ITB) in Berlin, Germany, March 9, 2016. Fabrizio Bensch / Reuters
Skift Take: This week in tourism news, we looked at millennials who surprise us. This diverse group really does buy luxury products and its business travel spending is relatively conservative.

A Busy Week for Ban News — Skift Corporate Travel Innovation Report
In this Sunday photo from 2015, travelers line up at a security checkpoint at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago. The past week brought news about the Trump administration's travel ban and restrictions on large electronics. Nam Y. Huh / Associated Press
Skift Take: As external forces disrupt the world of corporate travel, we think it's wise for travel managers to check in with employees and see how satisfied they are with travel policy.
— Hannah Sampson
The Skift Corporate Travel Innovation Report is our weekly newsletter focused on the future of corporate travel, the big fault lines of disruption for travel managers and buyers, the innovations emerging from the sector, and the changing business traveler habits that are upending how corporate travel is packaged, bought, and sold.
Team Skift was out most of this week in Montreal participating in some bleisure activities — OK, mostly leisure — for the company’s annual retreat. But that didn’t keep news from breaking (frequently).
Monday brought a decision from the U.S. Supreme Court to hear arguments on the executive order by President Donald Trump banning travel from six Muslim-majority countries. The court will take up the issue in October, but in the meantime, part of the ban will go into effect. Travelers with “bona fide” connections to the U.S. — close family, business, or academic — should not be blocked from getting visas under the current decision.
So what does that mean for business travel? We expect less chaos at the airports, but confusion remains.
Greeley Koch, executive director of the Association of Corporate Travel Executives, offered this reaction in a statement: “There are reasons to be heartened by the Supreme Court’s decision [Monday], in particular the provision that would allow travelers with legitimate ties to the U.S. to continue to enter the country. But the key to successful implementation—and to minimize the impact to businesses—is clearly defining the ‘significant business or professional obligations’ that will allow travelers with proper documentation to enter the U.S. and keep the economic engine running. We will be eagerly awaiting clarity until this issue can be definitively resolved.”
On that other ban front, the threat of an in-cabin “laptop ban” appears to be giving way to a policy of increased security around the world for all U.S.-bound flights. Again, specifics are scarce. In another statement, Koch called the new procedures “far preferable to an outright electronic device ban” for business travelers, but cautioned that the details are important.
“How onerous will these new protocols be for travelers and airlines?” he asked. “What if an airport or airline has difficulty complying—does that lead to a ban on electronics in the cabin? Until we have the details, this policy has the potential to become a de facto device ban.”
Uncertainty around security restrictions can affect traveler satisfaction, as can a multitude of other factors. It seems like a given that travel managers should know how satisfied (or not) road warriors are. A new study, however, shows that 31 percent of North American travel managers who responded to a survey never measure traveler satisfaction.
Given the state of the world and the rapidly evolving forces that impact corporate travel,  we think that’s a conversation worth having.
— Hannah Sampson, News Editor
Business of Buying
Hotel CEOs Love Direct Booking But They Have Varied Views About Strategy: Whether you choose to view it as a war or not, it’s fairly unanimous that nearly every hotelier wishes he or she would have more direct bookings versus bookings made through an online travel agency. Read more at Skift
German Hotel Booking Giant HRS Tilts Further Toward Corporate Travel: We applaud Germany’s largest travel tech company for trying to help business travelers check in and check out of hotels more quickly by investing in app-connected sensors at hundreds of hotels. Read more at Skift
Amtrak’s New CEO Is Delta Air Lines’ Old CEO: Before Richard Anderson took over Delta, the airline was a mess. Now, it’s considered by many as the best-run airline in the United States. We’d love to think Anderson can do something similar here, but fixing Amtrak will be a much more challenging task. Read more at Skift
Are Travel Managers Missing Out When They Don’t Solicit Business Traveler Feedback?: Many travel managers do not solicit feedback from their travelers, which seems like a missed opportunity. The evidence, however, shows that reacting to traveler feedback doesn’t necessarily lead to more satisfied travelers. Read more at Skift
Safety + Security
Trump Travel Ban Partially Upheld by Supreme Court in Temporary Ruling: The stage has been set for a showdown in October that will have serious ramifications for the U.S. travel industry. Read more at Skift
Supreme Court Travel Ban Ruling Not Expected to Create Airport Chaos: While the U.S. Supreme Court-allowed version of the travel ban is more limited than earlier versions and unlikely to create mass chaos, the travel industry will still have to deal with the fallout of the Trump administration sending a non-welcoming message about international travel. Read more at Skift
Airline Laptop Ban Will Be Relaxed if Additional Security Measures Are Achieved: Despite the big talk about enhanced screening, this is a retreat by the U.S. and a win for airlines that pushed a more strategic approach to security. Read more at Skift
Disruption + Innovation
Etihad To Let Passengers Bid for Adjacent Seats Among Series of Revenue Moves: Etihad may be able to squeeze some extra revenue by giving passengers the option of stretching out a bit more in the seats next to them but selling the seats would be a lot better. Read more at Skift
Google Picks Avis to Run Its Self-Driving Car Fleet Pilot Program: Using car rentals to get consumers familiar with the technology is a smart move. Smart enough that Apple had the same idea at the same time. Read more at Skift
Apple Partners With Hertz for Self-Driving Car Trials: This is clearly an idea with legs, given all the news in one week alone. We just want to know how long it will take for public sentiment — and corporate travel policy — to embrace the option once the technology is ready. Read more at Skift

Vorchecking: Kraftklub, SXTN, Alt-J
Außerdem ab Freitag erhĂ€ltlich: Roger Waters, Flogging Molly, U2, All That Remains, Bonaparte, Dua Lipa, Dan Auerbach etc.
Auf "Is This The Life We Really Want?" will der 73-JĂ€hrige im Verbund mit Radiohead-Produzent Nigel Godrich an seine 40 Jahre alten Meisterwerke anknĂŒpfen.
So weit, so vorhersehbar. Unser Rezensent Lippe hört in den tiefen BĂ€ssen und den Elektrosounds BezĂŒge zu ihrem Förderer Frauenarzt heraus und lobt die fortgeschrittene Raptechnik des Duos.
