It's kind of weird but long story short, vampires can survive in the sun and not get hurt. Eric decides to sunbath on top of a fucking mountain and suddenly the thing that makes them immune to sun shuts off. He catches on fire and while we don't see him "die", he's can't really go anywhere without burning to death.
