Lost (2023): A Thriller Which May Be Lost In The Bollywood Diaries
When someone disappears, everything gets infused with that person’s presence. Every single object becomes a reminder of absence, as if absence were more important than presence. Trending on the online subscription video-streaming platform, ZEE5, “Lost” is a mystery-thriller which has been inspired by true events. The film has been directed by Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury and stars Yami Gautam Dhar as a female crime reporter named Vidhi Sahani who investigates the sudden disappearance of a young theater activist Ishan Bharti (Tushar Pandey). This mystery-thriller is based on my hometown, the city of Kolkata in West Bengal, India. Lost showcases the efforts of Vidhi in unveiling the mystery of Ishan’s sudden disappearance. This thrilling story has a lot of layers inculcated within it which may impact your mind and render you thoughtful. Lost (2023) Official Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9apX7_X4eM The Good: It’s Entertaining! The plot of Lost, co-written by Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury and Shyamal Sengupta, is something new and intriguing. In fact, there have been many Bollywood films in the past which portrayed investigations regarding mysterious disappearances of individuals. However, the in-depth investigative endeavors of Vidhi Sahani showcased in this movie did keep it thrilling throughout. There are a lot of twists and turns in the screenplay. When Ishan went missing, the police ruled him to be linked with Maoists who they thought were responsible for his disappearance. While Vidihi thought otherwise. She laid her suspicion on politician Ranjan Varman (Rahul Khanna). The screenplay of Lost is philosophical and portrays the lost values and integrity in the modern era. The film runs for 2 hours. Even if certain scenes appeared a bit stretched, they won’t cause boredom. It is because the frequent twists in the story as it unfolds will engage you in a puzzle-solving game. You would surely not leave your seats without finding out what really happened to Ishan. Also, the dialogues in Lost by Ritesh Shah are impactful enough to stay in your mind for a long time. Convincing Performances Yami Gautam Dhar has played her part as the female crime reporter Vidhi with conviction. The entire film rested on her performance as she is the central character in this story. She anchored her role as the inquisitive crime reporter with earnestness and proved her mettle once again after "A Thursday". Pankaj Kapur plays Vidhi's maternal grandfather and I must say, the film truly depicts a beautiful relationship between a grandfather and his granddaughter. His character is important too from the film's point of view. In fact, Vidhi's grandfather was the one who helped her by leading her to a solution during her investigation. Rahul Khanna as the suspicious antagonist added to the thrill. Tushar Pandey who plays Ishan has a brief role in the movie but he carried it out well. It is obvious that his role would be brief because, after a certain instance, he disappears. Jokes apart! The supporting cast included Neil Bhoopalam as Vidhi’s boyfriend Jeet and Pia Bajpaiee as Ishan’s girlfriend Ankita, who rendered great support. https://youtu.be/9H1P4aGD4rc The Mystery Atmosphere The shady sepia tone prevailing in the cinematic backgrounds of the movie added to its mystery essence. Cinematographer Avik Mukhopadhyay deserves appreciation for this clever approach. The film was shot in Kolkata and the retro buildings and landscapes of the city amplified the mysterious atmosphere. The Bad: Who Is Ishan? The main reason why this movie may fail is because of the character Ishan. I would like to ask the filmmakers, who really was Ishan? Was he some famous celebrity or politician, that his disappearance made a popular crime reporter spend her valuable time investigating? India is a vastly populous country and here, several people go missing every now and then. So what’s so special about Ishan which raised such a hue and cry about his disappearance? What I mean to say here is that the filmmakers failed to establish the character of Ishan because of this the sympathy of the audience doesn’t build up upon his character in the first place! So, the audiences are like, if a “nobody” like Ishan has gone missing, then let it be! After all, he was some unpopular street performer who just used to entertain the crowds. People like that go missing every day! Also, the audiences would have accepted the character of Ishan if it had been played by some top star in Bollywood like Kartik Aaryan, Varun Dhawan, or Sidharth Malhotra. The filmmakers could have made a wise decision by portraying a top Bollywood star as Ishan rather than an unpopular newbie like Tushar Pandey. This would have established the character in the minds of the audiences and then they would have appreciated this film much more. Horrible Songs The songs in Lost are extremely irritating and are not worth even to be discussed. There are four to five unpopular tracks in this movie and all of them are exceptionally bad. Listen to their unmelodic cacophony at your own risk! https://youtu.be/3cPk33kMtaw The Verdict: The making of Lost is as mysterious as the film itself. Reports reveal that this film was shot within a month. Its filming began in July 2021 and wrapped up in August 2021. I wonder, what made the filmmakers hold it for so long and release it on February 16, 2023? Moreover, this mystery drama suddenly released with no prior news of its release anywhere! The editing of this movie was well done considering the fact that editor Bodhaditya Banerjee managed to keep all the detailed investigative scenes within the 2-hour time frame. I find reports that some people are ultra-fascinated by the “mysterious” city of Kolkata which has been portrayed in this movie. Kolkata, being my hometown, arouses the least fascination in me. In fact, I find it everything other than mysterious. If you ask me, it is quite an old-fashioned and boring place to reside and if you reside here, you would feel that you have traveled back in time somewhere in the 19th century. Lost also indicates director Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury's obsession with feminism. He directed the movie "Pink" with the tagline "No means, No!" That means when a woman says the word "No" in order to express her denial, it genuinely means "No". No man can force her without her consent. Now with Lost, he showcases to what extent a woman can go and what she is capable of doing when she is determined. Crime reporter Vidhi did dig deep into her investigations despite facing several oppositions to finally uncover the mystery of Ishan's disappearance. In my opinion, Lost is a fair entertainer for thriller lovers. However, apart from experiencing a thrill, you may be left with several questions to ponder after watching it. The film is thrilling no doubt, but its philosophical screenplay may not be digested by all. Perhaps, this is the main reason why this film itself may get lost a bit too early just like Ishan did. I would say that the filmmakers did the right thing by releasing this film on an OTT platform and not on the big screens. Had it been released on the big screens, then the audiences in the theater hall would have gone missing as well. Excuse me for this joke, but if you love some "philosophical thrill" you can very well consider watching Lost streaming on ZEE5. Read the full article

Top 5 Best Cinematography in Hindi Films in 2018
January 12, 2019
by Inakshi Chandra-Mohanty
1. Pankaj Kumar - Tumbbad
The best visuals of the year are in the epic horror fantasy film Tumbbad. From the outer shot of the ‘haveli’ (mansion) drenched in the non-stop rain, to the barely lit close ups of Vinayak’s (Sohum Shah) face as he searches for the hidden treasure, each frame tells a story of its own. Tumbbad is like one of those ancient tales that one would read in Amar Chitra Katha comics, unfolding on screen. And therefore, each frame feels like a drawing from one of those books, picturized on screen. The mixture of colors, red, blue, and yellow, make Tumbbad and the ‘haveli’ look threatening. Greed brings forth darkness and sadness, and the stark visuals of Tumbbad reflect upon this theme. Overall, this film achieves the perfect tone thanks to the visuals.
2. Avik Mukhopadhyay - October
For a film to be cinematographically brilliant, the shots do not need to be conventionally beautiful, standing out above the rest. Perfect framing, and unique, but emphatic angles are equally as essential to making the cinematography a success. October has a mixture of stunning shots and succinct framing. The former comprise of shots such as the close-ups of the Shiuli flowers and the gorgeous wide angles of Kullu when Dan moves there for work. The latter, however, comprises of some of the most emotional, poignant shots of the film. The most resonating scene in the film is when Shiuli’s mother tells Dan to leave. The focus of the camera begins on a close up of the door opening in the foreground and then shifts to Shiuli’s mother speaking in the background. The angle at which this shot is presented and the framing of the character in comparison to the door can allow for much interpretation in regards to the dynamic between Dan and Shiuli’s mother, and the connection that the two have as the only ones that still have hope. The film is filled with many more instances of thoughtful framing that truly makes it like poetry on screen.
3. Sayak Bhattacharya - Laila Majnu
Kashmir is one of the most beautiful locations in India because it is one of the few areas where multiple seasons can be experienced. From snow, to rain, to a gorgeous sunrise over the mountains, the makers of Laila Majnu have taken full advantage of the breadth of Kashmir. In the second half, when Majnu’s depression takes a toll on his health, we see him travelling across the vast mountains and forests of Kashmir during the songs, as he begins to speak to the imaginary Laila. During these sequences, there is a combination of greenery, sunlight, and snow, as all the different facets of these gorgeous valleys are explored. Apart from that, even the song during the end credits has gripping cinematography, as the camera captures Laila and Majnu dancing on bridges, in large fields, and on the mountains, as snow, autumn leaves, and greenery surround them. That one song itself is enough to encapsulate all seasons. Without the brilliant cinematography, the film would have been incomplete, and it would have been a disappointment for a film set in Kashmir not to fully explore it.
4. Tushar Kanti Ray - Kedarnath
Like Laila Majnu, Kedarnath is also set in an area filled with mountains and valleys, making for some beautiful sights. The makers explored the whole location, especially during the flood sequence. One of the best shots in the film is towards the end when the camera focused on Mansoor (Sushant Singh Rajput) from above, while he stared upwards as the water surrounded and engulfed him. However, the most beautiful frames in the film were not of the grand landscape but were instead during the scene when Mansoor and Mukku (Sara Ali Khan) spent time together in the cave. There is a striking contrast of colors as there is blue from the sky and rain, meshed with an orange hue from the fire lit in the cave. The harshness of the colors, signifies the intensity of their relationship as this is the moment when they truly accept their emotions for one another. The strength of the emotions, portrayed through the visuals in this scene and the remainder of the film, is what makes Kedarnath the epic that it tries to be.
5. Anil Mehta - Beyond the Clouds
Despite its weak story and screenplay, Iranian filmmaker, Majid Majidi’s, first Indian film works purely because of the visuals and performances. The film opens with some magnificent shots of the chaotic Mumbai, ranging from the traffic-filled streets to the congested gallis. Later in the film, as Amir (Ishaan Khatter) begins to bond with the children, he dances on the song Muqabla behind the parapet, hence allowing the camera to capture some beautifully framed shadows. And the last shot of the film is perhaps the most beautiful as the drops of rain slowly drip onto the fingers of the little boy who has not seen anything outside of the square cell he has been confined to since his birth. These three sets of shots reflect the strong emotions of love and hatred, from the brother-sister relationship, to the relationship between a man and the family of the person who is the reason for his sister’s suffering. These emotions are the strength of this film, and the visuals are the strength of the emotions.

‘Sardar Udham’: a brilliant, red hot furnace that forges the portrait of a patriot
He may not have agreed to the title of this review, alluding to him as a patriot. For, that was never the point of his 21-year old stake-out to register a protest that would shake the British empire’s stiff upper lip into a worried quiver. “Let the world know I was a revolutionary,” he says in the face of imminent execution. In a world that’s now twisted into a grotesque abstract that defines…

Gulabo Sitabo: Shoojit Sircar shows the wreck for cupidity in the finest way possible
Amazon Prime’s Gulabo Sitabo will make you experience the beauty of Lucknow and strong performances by the leads along with boring and slow-pacing screenplay and ineffective dialogues. Though the makers wanted the film to get a theatrical release, but during the lockdown, they decided to go with the OTT platform. Ayushmann Khurrana worked with Shoojit Sircar in his debut in Vickey Donor. On the other hand, Amitabh Bacchan paired-up with Shoojit Sircar in movies like Badla, Pink, Piku, etc. Now talking about this movie, it starts with a doll show. The name of the dolls are Gulabo and Sitabo and the show is about how they are fighting for their sake. Then the camera moved on a ragged haveli named Fatima Haveli, which is more than 100 years old. The begum, who is the owner of the haveli married Mirza(Amitabh Bachhan) who is 17 years younger than her. There are some tenants who live in Fatima Haveli, give negligible rent to Mirza. Baankey (Ayushmann Khurrana), who is the leader of the tenants, has quarrel relation with Mirza. Mirza always wants to repulse the tenants but on the other side, Baankey wants to live there giving Mirza a very low rent or get a flat or money instead of living there. Now you have to watch the film to know how their fight turns into a tragedy for them.
Now coming to the performances, the leads are the show stellar. As usual, Ayushmann was extraordinary as Baankey, and Amitabh Bacchan delivered one of his finest performance once again. The prosthetic of Mr. Bacchan was looking quite artificial but the good news is Mr. Bacchan completely overshadowed it. The supportive characters especially Vijay Raaz and Brijendra Kala made this film worth watching. Avik Mukhopadhyay leads the cinematography. He explored Lucknow as never before, his work is appreciable in this film. But the makers didn’t try any kind of experiment what we wanted to see in this genre of film, maybe the makers wanted to give this movie a more realistic look. But still, Avik Mukhopadhyay proved why he is the 4-time national award winner. The background score is good too and matched with the situations of the films. But the screenplay is the thing where this film fails to impress the audience. Juhi Chaturvedi, who is the screenwriter of films like Piku, October, wrote a slow pacing screenplay for Gulabo Sitabo. Though the dialogues were trying to recover the concentration of the audience, but still the not so impactful and weakened dialogues can’t able to make the audience’s patience to sail through the film. The editing part could have been a bit shorter. But if you like the way Shoojit Sarkar is directing, you won’t get disappointed that much. Though the climax of the movie is amazing, it has a great message put up by its end. Final verdict: In spite of boring screenplay and defected execution, the performances by the casts and amazing message through its climax make this movie a one-time watchable. Rating – 3/5 Read the full article

Have you ever played Cat and Mouse and gotten confused midway about who is the cat and who is the mouse? Badla does that to you. An official adaptation of the Spanish film The Invisible Guest, Badla is essentially an atmospheric film. The major part of the film is set within a room and has two individuals talking over a table daring you to stay interested. Sujoy Ghosh who has a thing for such thrillers and gave us the incredible Kahaani years back returns to his favourite Whodunit genre. This time he has the spunky Tapsee Pannu and the megastar Amitabh Bachchan playing off against each other. It feeds off both of their incredible acting skills and you are so invested in their conversation that you actually lose track of time. Wow...when did a film do that to you last time? Add to the mix Amrita Singh who returns to the screen after a while in a role that explores various shades and Tony Luke who debuts in a role that could have gone unnoticed but he adds gravitas to the performance. Sujoy Ghosh and his cinematographer Avik Mukhopadhyay give Edinburgh an ominous look and you are kept on your toes looking out for that twist round the corner. Although you may not necessarily agree with the climax, you have to give credit where it's due. Badla is an intelligently written and well performed thriller. Do not Miss It! . . ‘Gulabo Sitabo’ review: A Delightful, Ambling Tale of Greed
‘Gulabo Sitabo’ review: A Delightful, Ambling Tale of Greed
In one of many beautifully crafted scenes in Gulabo Sitabo, as Mirza (Amitabh Bachchan) shuffles out of a house — where the family’s literally spat on his face — with his lawyer Christopher Clark (Brijendra Kala) the latter wonders, why did they treat him with such disdain? What had transpired in the past? Mirza turns to him, genuinely puzzled, “Did they? I thought they treated me fine.”
And…
