Swap S4’s backstory

for simplicity’s sake and a lack of anything better to call them the S4 will still be referred to as the S4 despite none of them being anywhere close to ranking S+ (yet) 

The S4 first met when they were randomly placed in a team together in one of their first turf wars 

They all saw potential in each other and agreed to try out forming a team 

Yeah… that ended up not being the best idea 

They found out quickly that their personalities did not blend well together

After awhile they all kind of ditched each other one by one 

Skull was the first to go

In the time he spent being in a team with Army, Aloha and Mask Avi searched for two other people that would be good teammates for him and Skull 

Unfortunately that wouldn’t happen until Paisley’s (who I head canon as Skull’s sister) birthday an entire year after their own 

Well, better late than never plus he and Paisley get along decently and her friend (Stitch) seems much more bearable to be around than his teammates

And so Skull and Avi form a new team with Paisley and Stitch under the guise of wanting to show them the ropes 

Not that that excuse really counts for anything because Paisley knows damn well how Skull feels about his soon to be former teammates 

Army’s really mad at Skull for just ditching the team like that, Mask couldn’t care less, and Aloha’s only response is calling up three of his partying friends and asking if they want to form a turf team 

That leaves his Army and Mask who barely even last a day thanks to their drastically different work ethics 

A few weeks go by and Army meets up with some family friends who he was considering starting a team with prior to meeting the rest of the S4 

Meanwhile Mask talks about the recent disbanding to a few members of an occult club at school who (prompted by Moon) suggest they form a team to stick it to them 

And what better opportunity to do that than winning the corocoro cup?

MY URL IS THE AVISKULL GUY FOR GOOD REASON!! They are canonically childhood friends who left a team together to form their own. Skull got a lil possessive over Avi when two other silly goofy teams started fighting over him. Also there's 41 works of this ship on ao3 and I've written 21 of them with more on the way. I want them to at least get kinda far for my own self-validation because this is a rarepair in an already small enough fandom compared to others.

3. THEY SWAM A RELAY TOGETHER and that means a lot in swimming because IT'S BASICALLY SMTH A TEAM DOES WHEN THEY HAVE ABSOLUTE TRUST IN EACH OTHER AND THEY DEPEND ON EACH OTHER AND THEY LOVE EACH OTHER AND IT'S BASICALLY THE SWIMMING ANIME EQUIVALENT OF I LOVE YOU

4. when sousuke told rin about the shoulder injury he was literally so devastated because his love couldn't follow his passions anymore,, AND WHEN SOUSUKE RECOVERED FROM THE SURGERY RIN LEGIT CRIED HAPPY TEARS!!! and sousuke was always there for rin w/e he had a slump bc he compared himself too much to haru and others,,, like gods they care so much for each other

5. sousuke is the earth and rin is the fire,,, AND RIN LIGHTS A FIRE IN SOUSUKE WHILE SOUSUKE GROUNDS RIN LIKE PLEASE THE MOTIFS ARE LITERALLY RIGHT THERE EVEN IN THEIR COLOUR SCHEMES (teal + maroon)

Masterlist

Another day, another match against the purple team.

You became Skull's main rival ever since the battle where he couldn't hit you. You irritated him with a passion- you and your (main weapon). You were even more annoying than Aloha when it came to dodging, purposefully irking him during your battles to attempt to get him off his game. You once danced right out of his range to piss him off. That became a regular thing- standing just barely out of his range, playfully squidbagging, smiling at him through the scope. He knew you meant no malice- well, maybe a little- but all in good fun.

Eventually, you began attempting to paint things like hearts just out of his range, sometimes even on the walls- with a varying level of outcomes, depending on your weapon.

You ran past his lazer, using a paintbrush this time. You drew a heart as you dodged, winking at him through his scope before stopping mid-step, only to turn around unpredictably. You squeaked as a shot rang out just behind you. These were your regular antics that he'd gotten used to, he paid it no mind.

He'd won the battle, but 'lost the war' as they say. He had yet to snipe you. Aviator pulled him aside as he waved you goodbye;

"Y'know, if you don't say something soon, I will."

Skull tilted his head in confusion, but Avi simply walked away.

The same scene played out the following day- you dodging all his attacks with dualies this time.

He admired how agile you were, more now than ever. The way you turn and flip in ways he didn't think was possible for a squid. He didn't realise how long he stood dazed until Aviator snapped his fingers in front of Skull's face, shaking his head and tsk-ing, reminding him of his words from yesterday.

Skull still had no idea what he meant.

The following day, you claimed your legs were sore, so he offered just hanging out for the day. The two of you went to an ice cream shop.

The shop was empty besides the workers, so you got to enjoy seeing him bandanna-less. You sat smiling warmly into to palm of your hand.

You offered him a spoonful of your favorite flavor of ice cream just as the bell for the entrance rang. Who was he to object. He had a small smile written across his face as he ate the ice cream, closing his eyes while savoring the taste.

Before long, the two of you were interrupted by Avi who promptly tugged Skull outside. It was almost comical- the gentle slap across the back of Skull's head that was administered by Aviator. Skull's shoulders dropped. You tried to be subtle about watching them, going back to eating your ice cream when Skull came back in- it seems Avi had left after the commotion that you couldn't quite make out.

Skull apologized to you.

"Oh, no worries! You've done nothing wrong,"

You were slightly confused, but you assumed his apology was for having to leave so suddenly.

"No- I, uh, didn't realize that this..." he mumbled the following words into his bandanna.

You hummed at him in a questioning tone, indicating you hadn't heard him. His ears turned warm out of embarrassment, sitting down across from you. He took breath in, and restated his sentence;

"I...Didn't realize that this was a date... or that you liked me,"

Your mouth formed an 'o' shape, then you began to chuckle. You reached your hand out to his and held it gently.

"Let's start over, and make this more clear,"

He tilted his head.

"I love you,"

He sat for a moment before remembering how he was meant to reply, and deciding if it was true.

"I love you too,"

He decided it was.

The roof of the apartment building was cold against the flat of his back, and Skull stared up at the fireworks popping with deep booms overhead in showers of color. The sounds of the Splatfest were muffled by distance, the cheering of a crowd nothing more than a soft buzz on the night horizon.

"Hey." A light poke to his arm snapped him to reality, and Skull turned his head to look at Aviators, who smiled and lay beside him. "Lost in thought?"

Skull shrugged, turning his face back up to the sky. After another moment, he tugged his bandana down, breathing in the night air without the fabric blocking its way.

Avi raised a brow behind his glasses. "Okay, I guess it's that kind of night." And without any hesitation, he removed his aviators from his face and tucked them into the pocket of his squid satin jacket.

Aviators didn't uncover his eyes often, if not at all. Similarly, Skull didn't tend to uncover the lower half of his face. That they were able to do such things with each other that they didn't around others felt reassuring and comfortable. Skull let the feelings wash over him.

"Feels different than before," Skull said, staring up at the sky. "Splatfest."

It was their first one since Team Blue had shown up and kicked their asses in that rematch. Skull had forgotten what winning a turf war and a ranked battle was supposed to feel like. The effortless wins made everything feel monotonous. Even splatfests had become boring.

But for some reason, it wasn't boring anymore. The sky was filled with color now. Skull barely remembered what his first splatfest felt like, the joy and thrill of that first party when he was younger, but he imagined it probably felt something like this. His chest felt as though it might burst. He didn't really understand why.

Avi shrugged, scooting closer to where Skull lay and poking his shoulder again.

"Different good, or different bad?" Avi asked.

"I... can't tell." Skull continued to stare at the sky, and Avi continued to stare at Skull. He knew what Avi's eyes looked like. He was probably the only one who did.

"Well if it's not bad, it's probably alright I think."

Skull only watched the stars, a churning feeling in his hearts. He'd failed, hadn't he? Wasn't strength all that mattered?

"Do you... ever miss Vintage and Omega?"

Avi made a surprised noise at the question, but when Skull turned to look at him, he went quiet. He remained silent for a moment, before turning his face towards the stars and away from Skull's piercing gaze. "Honestly? Yeah, sometimes."

His hearts sank in his chest. He couldn't bring himself to look away from Avi's face. "Do you regret coming with me?"

"Dude, what?" Avi snorted out a disbelieving laugh. "Nah."

"But... Team Purple isn't... We lost to-" Skull could hardly get the words out, huffing in frustration when his throat closed up and nothing slipped through anymore.

"You think I'm staying with you just because you're strong?" Avi shook his head with a laugh. "C'mon, Skull. I'm with you until all the stars fall out of the sky, and even then I'd never leave you behind. I don't care what team I'm on so long as you're there too. If we win, if we lose, that doesn't matter to me. Only you do."

The declaration rendered him speechless. Unable to find the words, Skull reached a hand down and took the one Avi had been poking him with.

Avi paused, glancing down at their joined hands before lifting his face and smiling at Skull.

"I'm with you," Aviators repeated, the bright colors of the fireworks overhead reflecting in his eyes. "No matter what."

Skull squeezed the hand in his own and found a smile on the corners of his lips.

Now I'm predicting to see my inbox soon flooded with kobolds and Kenkus across the horizon by everybody. I can already see the flood of little dragon people with goggles and a dagger and the Paladin they keep annoying. I don't know whether or not to regreat unleashing the suggestion. Since I haven't posted designs since I kinda suck at drawing humanoids I'm wondering what the general consensus of people following this au are gonna picture the cast as looking like, though I can drop hints like Mask wearing the traditional mask of a plague doctor.

Ever since getting attacked by Jane Prentiss, falling under the influence of the corruption, Rider... had changed. Worms burrowed in his skin. He called himself multiple people in a human host that used to be Rider. They still answered to that name, but still...

Avi sighed. He knew what he needed to do.

He grabbed a tape, feeling all his eyes tingle as he knew what he was going to do.

He called upon Rider. Seeing his skin covered in holes and full of worms scared him, be he forced himself to stayed calm as Rider walked-no, stumbled-over.

Avi led him to his office. "Alright, Rider, I need you to make a statement."

Rider tilted his head. "...Why?" He asked, in his own voice. Though it didn't sound like his voice.

"Just... I might as understand my paranormal co-workers." Avi answered.

"Fair enough... what do you want us to talk about?"

"Your mental state. I'm not saying you're insane, I just... I want to know what's going on in your head." Avi said. "Okay?"

Rider nodded. "Okay."

Avi pressed record on the tape. "Statement of Rider Clark, regarding his-"

"Their." Rider corrected. "More than one being, remember?"

"Right. My apologies." Avi cleared his throat. "Regarding their mental state since falling into the influence of The Corruption. Statement recorded direct from subject. Statement begins."

"We... well, we don't know where to start." Rider said. "Perhaps, that's where. We're not just a single person. We're hundreds upon hundreds of entities, sharing a human host we use to talk. Rider, while our name as a whole, is only one mind in this elaborate web, as Gloves might say."

They continued, "But it's not like we're a hivemind. We more... we can speak to each other, through our minds. Like we said, we're a web of minds. Other than Rider, who is more prevalent than the rest of us, we all have equal say in what we do. We whisper into our own minds to make decisions. Like... honestly, there might be nothing in human experience like it."

"...Can I ask how you feel about each other?" Avi asked.

"Well, we all love each other. We love ourselves." Rider answered. "That might be the reason Rider fell to us rather than fight us; We whispered the idea of being consumed by what loves him, and he indulged into our temptations. We compared this to... being in a polycule, almost. We are essentially a polycule with ourselves. And, Goggles. He is alright with technically being in a relationship with Rider and a bunch of worms."

"That's... an interesting way of putting it." Avi said. "...What about Rider? Like- the original mind, I suppose."

"Oh, Rider's doing fine. He's the main one talking to you, we're just helping him get his words out." Rider said. "He's found his place with us, and he's perfectly content."

"...Is that all?"

Rider nodded. "That's all..."

"Okay. Statement, and recording, end." Avi said, pressing the stop button on the tape recorder. "Thank you for your time, Rider."

They smiled, and gave a nod, walking out of the room.
