I was never fussy about what kind of music but I managed to avoid Country and Pomp and Prog Rock - that aside, I was a tart for hire (actually, for free, if I'm honest) and would sometimes be in three or four bands at a time ranging from useless to average. I slowly got into other things but only stopped playing for good when I got into Drama school. I was a pretty handy 14-year old drummer and could eventually get back to the standard of an enthusiastic 14-year old if I dedicated every waking moment to that end. So I don't bother."

Polish prog rockers Riverside are back in Scotland again in support of their latest critically acclaimed album ‘Wasteland’. The last time I saw these guys was back in 2014 when guitarist Piotr Grudzinski was in the band. Tragically Piotr passed away after a sudden cardiac arrest leaving the band to make the difficult decision to continue on as a trio. The guys managed to get through this rough time and created ‘Wasteland’, their first album without him. Within this post-apocalyptic themed album, guitar parts are played by guest musicians and bassist, and vocalist, Mariusz Duda. Live however the guitar is provided by touring musician Maciej Meller who some may recognise from the progressive rock band Quidam.

I haven’t come across opening band Lesoir before, even though they have four studio albums under their belts. This Dutch progressive outfit come from a similar place to Riverside musically, so fit into the bill perfectly. They list their influences as being from the likes of Anathema, The Gathering, Anneke van Giersbergen, Steven Wilson, Porcupine Tree etc… but they really have their own sound and at no time did I feel I was listening to a poor man’s imitation of any of the previously mentioned bands. Due to the recorded nature of their tracks they did have some pre-recorded backing providing some orchestration, extra vocal parts, drum beats etc… It’s pretty subtle but it does add an extra dimension to their music. I think live however they could have got away without it.

It’s a pretty decent turnout for the band when they kick off their set with “Feet on the Ground”. Drummer Bob van Heumen and backing vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Eleen Bartholomeus never really stop smiling throughout the entire set. It’s good to see a band enjoying themselves. Maartje Meessen vocals sound great but unfortunately Ingo Dassen’s guitar seems to get lost slightly in the mix. His heavily processed guitar sound, I don’t think I’ve seen quite that many guitar effects pedals on someone’s pedal board before, sounds great on recorded output but live it just doesn’t seem to cut through so well. For me this was most noticeable during heavier sections where a lot of the power that should have been there was getting lost with an over-saturated effects laden guitar tone. This however was my only gripe and the band put on an entertaining performance that received an enthusiastic response from the crowd here tonight. During the set Maartje thanked the audience for coming out early to see them. If you’re catching this tour at any point then make sure you get along early as these guys are worth coming along to see.

Riverside are no stranger to Scotland and it’s great to see that they always include us in their UK tour. Their dedication to the fans here has definitely paid off as there can’t be many progressive rock bands that can play a venue the size of the SWG3 and pull a large enough crowd to fill it.

As the lights dim, the hall is filled with the sounds of the intro tape, and the band kick off with “Acid Rain” from the new album. It’s a great track to start off the gig. The up-tempo groove grabs the attention of the crowd and singer Mariusz has us all singing along to the native American tribal sounding “Whoa Whoa” section. Mariusz encourages the audience to clap and sing along throughout the gig. He has a real connection with the fans and chats away between songs. He asks us to enjoy ourselves and makes a joke about prog audiences not dancing but standing around looking up at the band and pondering the music. Unfortunately for him that’s generally how prog audiences are. There’s not going to be much in the way of fist banging, crowd surfing, circle pits and walls of death in this genre. The demographic of the Glasgow audience is also more mature with the average age probably being around the late-40’s mark.

The band run through a set consisting largely of tracks from “Wasteland” but also visits previous albums from their discography. The new material fits seamlessly alongside the older tracks. One of the highlights for me being the emotional sounding acoustic song “Guardian Angel”. I really enjoyed guitarist Maciej Meller’s guitar solo on the outro to this one. He does a great job performing on all the material for what must be quite demanding and complex parts. I’ve been to a few gigs at this venue now and the sound it always first class and tonight is no exception. The lighting is also very impressive although most of the light is shone out from the stage rather than onto it which can be a tad blinding at times.

When the guys take to the stage for their encore they all look genuinely happy at the reaction they receive from this Scottish crowd. They end the perfectly executed gig with a superb rendition of of the mellow acoustic song “River Down Below” featuring another nice guitar solo from Maciej. This show is definitely a must-see for any self-professed prog rock fan. Catch them on tour if you can.
