*hisses* ooooooooof “The Songcord” hurts. Big ouch. Big oof.
What I got from the lyrics found on Youtube is that Neytiri basically felt comforted by the birth of Neteyam to keep going after she lost Hometree and her father. She thanks Eywa for the “nights” and “days” of life, which could figuratively mean the ups and downs. She also gives thanks for Kiri’s existence. That’s the song she sings at the beginning and at the end of Avatar The Way Of Water.
The subtle Neteyam reference hits so hard. What he means to her gains a whole new depth. Neteyam was a symbol of hope to her, of life that kept going on. Life that began anew. He was her future. Their relationship definitely didn’t have enough onscreen moments. Neteyam was an ideal more than a person, and I wish his significance had been emphasized more.
I ponder Neytiri’s grief a lot. She carries the second movie emotionally. Her song is phenomenal.

I know we here on the Spider side of the Avatar fandom like to joke about Spider being something of a Pandoran Tarzan, but have any of you actually listened to Disney's Tarzan soundtrack recently? From the perspective or lens of Spider? Cuz y'all. It's him, to an absolute T.
The four singles are : "You'll Be in My Heart," "Two Worlds," "Strangers Like Me," and "Son of Man." They're amazing songs.
After listening to these, look me in the eyes and tell me they don't remind you of Spider.

After listening to the whole A:TWOW soundtrack I came to the conclusion that while it may not me as memorable as the one from the first movie, it’s pretty good. HOWEVER I feel like it was overshadowed by the fragments of the original score that didn’t fit too well (or maybe were just jarring to hear in a completely different scenes) to the overall detriment of the audio experience.
My favourite tracks so far are 'Bad Parents' and 'Family Is Our Fortress' I think.

Blacklisting all the Dune tags until I am able to watch on Sunday :(
I watched the first part in a near-empty theater and it was INSANE. It was one of the movies were I tried to watch again on HBO later on but it just wasn't the same - trust me go see it in theater !
People complaining about the first part being slow and unwatchable, sorry tiktok brain ruined your attention span lol but the worldbuilding and the visuals and the way Villeneuve framed the story was phenomenal I definitely recommend
That being said- Part 2 is watchable even if you missed part 1 - they split it into the political backstory half and action half of the plot, but you definitely should at least watch a background recap video of part 1 if you don't watch the full film before going into part 2, it's guaranteed to be a banger (but still see part 1 if you can)
So much modern media, both sci-fi and not, was inspired by Dune and I am always surprised how many people are unfamiliar with it. Please please please give this the Barbenheimer level of enthusiasm lol I miss people being hype for in-theater experiences and this is definitely one of them to be excited about

So I actually get to a piece of media and don't experience it way late per my usual, and now I have to live with the consequence of there being almost nothing current on Tumblr about it. 😂

Just watched Avatar 2. Thots under the cut
A three hour movie cut into three acts on the hour. Well balanced, but some scenes dragged, especially in the second act. The real bad flashing lights were only for one short scene, contrary to some reports (which made it sound like it would have been a recurring instance… it Definitely Was Not. But the scene with it DID make me have to close me eyes for a second and I’m not even particularly sensitive to flashing lights so. Take that how you will)
Act 1: the actual sequel part. Tells the story of what Jake and Neytiri have been up to since the first movie (fucking. They’ve been fucking.) Also, somehow, Palpatine the colonel has returned -_-
Act 2: literally just a condensed version of the first movie, but with Jake’s son. Like plot beat for plot beat.
Act 3: Well now James Cameron is just trying to re-film the last half of Titanic (DOWN TO THE MUSIC…… LITERALLY THE SINKING STARTED PLAYING……. DUDES IN THE BOILER ROOM SWEPT OUT BY WATER…. THE MAIN FEMALE LEAD STUCK IN AN AIRPOCKET WITH THE LIGHTS FLICKERING…..,,. KATE WINSLET WAS APPARENTLY THERE?? SOMEWHERE????)

OK HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE GONE TO SEE THIS IN THEATRES BECAUSE I'VE SEEN AT LEAST 10 PEOPLE EXPLICITLY SAY IT
BC I DID TOO
Maybe I’m just a furry with anxiety, but y’all Puss in Boots 2?
The animation?
The story?
The themes?
Death?
Puss having an ACTUAL panic attack that isn’t mocked or played for laughs?
PERRITO AND HIS TRAGIC AF BACKSTORY THAT SOMEHOW DOESNT DAMPEN HIS KINDNESS??
JOHN MULANY AS A VILLIAN WHO IS SO DAMN EVIL EVEN JIMMY CRICKET GIVES UP?????
I’ve seen this movie twice in theaters and will not hesitate to do so again. Avatar 2 (which was meh plot wise) can’t even TOUCH the Last Wish.

Lyrics as heard by Tekre on Youtube:
(Irayo) Lie si oe Neteyamur - I experience Neteyam
Nawma Sa'nokur mìfa oeyä - to the great mother my inside (maybe a reference of Neteyam, born from her inside, going to the great mother?)
Atanti ngal molunge - You brought the light
Mipa tìreyti, mipa tìkanti - (you brought) new life, new goal
Lawnol a mì te'lan - great joy that is in the heart
Lawnol a mì te'lan - great joy that is in the heart
Ngaru irayo seiyi ayoe - We thank you
Tonìri tìreyä - for the nights of life
Ngaru irayo seiyi ayoe - we thank you
Srrìri tìreyä - for the days of life
Ma Eywa, ma Eywa - O Eywa, o Eywa
Zola'u nìprrte' ma Kiri - welcome, Kiri
Ngati oel munge soaiane - I bring you to the family
Lie si oe atanur - I experience the light
*Pähem parul, tì'ongokx a oeta - A miracle arrives, a birth that comes from me
Lawnol a mì te'lan - great joy that is in the heart
Lawnol a mì te'lan - great joy that is in the heart
Ngaru irayo seiyi ayoe - We thank you
Tonìri tìreyä - for the nights of life
Ngaru irayo seiyi ayoe - we thank you
Srrìri tìreyä - for the days of life
Ma Eywa, ma Eywa - O Eywa, o Eywa
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
*Big ?? on this line. What I actually hear makes no sense at all, even after combining with what a few other Na'vi speakers heard here, so we tried to put something together that makes kinda sense with the meaning and is not too far off what she sings. Since her pronunciation is good, but not flawless, I think this might be correct, but this line might also turn out to be something completely different honestly Will edit this when I find mistakes!

30 Days of G/t Self Care
Tumblr media
I'm not fully sure where this idea came from, but here we go! I do enjoy a fun little daily challenge, and like most things my mind went to “but how can I make it G/t?” And here we are! Just in time for the new year, a 30 day self care challenge but… sizey. I wanted to make an actual calendar thing, just in time for the new year (though it can be started at any time, it's not specific to January). Check the days off, spread them out over a longer time, pick out just the ones that speak to you, whatever you want to do 😊 Here's the guide to go with it.
Day 1. Set aside a few minutes to take some deep breaths and focus on the present moment. To help ground yourself, perhaps wrap yourself in a blanket and imagine you are in a large, lovingly grasping hand, or hold a small item and imagine it's a tiny friend.
Day 2. Revisit some nostalgic G/t media. What first got you into this? Let yourself reminisce and remember why you love this in the first place.
Day 3. Make G/t art. It can be anything! Drawing, writing, crochet, pottery, you name it. No need to hold yourself to a certain standard or show anyone else, just take some time to be creative. Even if you don't deem yourself an artist, give it a shot and see if you enjoy it!
Day 4. Relax with a word search puzzle. I made a G/t themed one for you right here!
Day 5. Try out this journal prompt. If you could be tiny/big at will, what types of things would you do to relax? How might you extrapolate from this and apply it to your real life?
Day 6. Stretch your body today. What imaginary setting could you give yourself to make it G/t? Are you surrounded by gigantic furniture in your mind’s eye? Perhaps the yoga video on your phone helps you pretend you have a tiny instructor?
Day 7. Listen to some G/t music. This could be anything, from sizey music videos to songs with sizey lyrics to the Arietty soundtrack.
Day 8. Practice gratitude by listing out all the little things you're thankful for. (See what I did there?) Add some big things to the list for good measure.
Day 9. Practice stepping out of your comfort zone a little bit by talking about G/t, out loud if you’re able. Whether it's discussing with a friend (you brave soul), recording yourself on your phone (you can immediately delete it), or just mumbling to yourself in the shower. Maybe you’ll realize you want to make a G/t podcast and we all win!
Day 10. Here's a little creative prompt. Arrange everyday items to make a G/t scene (use toys, miniatures, or even fashion a tiny person out of paperclips or paper). Take a picture, share it if you like!
Day 11. Create a cozier space today to enjoy your G/t content. Grab some blankets, make yourself a snack or some tea, light some candles, whatever sounds nice to you. Sometimes it's making a mundane moment special!
Day 12. Make yourself something healthy to eat. While you prepare it, imagine how different the task might be to carry out if you were very big or very small. Maybe even have some fun making your snack in miniature too.
Day 13. Try out some affirmations today and see if you can make them both sizey and relevant to your life. Ideas of mantras could be “I am allowed to take up space,” “I choose to appreciate the little things today,” “I will achieve great things through small steps.”
Day 14. Go out into nature for some fresh air. Lean in close and pay attention to the small details, perhaps imagining a shrunken version of yourself or a small friend exploring.
Day 15. Challenge yourself to learn a new skill today to bring your Gt ideas to life. Maybe it's learning how to code, or making your own VR avatar, or learning a new art tool or technique. It's finally time to watch that tutorial you've been saving!
Day 16. Pull out your dream journal, or start up a new one! Maybe we’ll figure out the whole lucid dreaming thing and come close to experiencing Gt, wouldn't that be the dream~ If this doesn't resonate with you, maybe start a journal to jot down your Gt daydreams instead!
Day 17. Relax with a crossword puzzle. I made a G/t themed one for you right here!
Day 18. Try to cross a few to dos off your to do list someday. Make it more fun by adding in some joke tasks in there, like “leave out a snack for the fairies” or “prep for borrowing trip tonight” or “meet with giant friend for coffee.” Maybe even schedule some real life Gt tasks - such as “work on chapter 2 of (Gt story you're writing)” or “plan a VRC hangout”.
Day 19. It's time to dress the part! Is there any way you can dress up or accessorize yourself in a sizey way? Maybe you have an oversized hoodie, or a necklace of a tiny Eiffel tower, or an old shirt with Tinkerbell on it. Did you know you can actually buy Arietty’s giant hair clip thing? Or if this better scratches your creative itch, maybe your objective is to make tiny accessories for a toy or figurine.
Day 20. Take some time to rest. Just allow yourself to lay down in a quiet, cozy setting for at least a few minutes and have some dedicated G/t daydreaming.
Day 21. Try out a new exercise routine and use your G/t imaginings to make it more fun. Watching a new workout video? You’re a giant visiting the gym and that's your human instructor on the screen. Spontaneous dance session in your room? You're a fairy frolicking in a field of enormous wildflowers. Going for a swim? You're actually crossing a vast ocean, or maybe a small glass of water.
Day 22. Check out a new G/t story. Not a big reader normally? Just give it a shot!
Day 23. Give yourself a pamper night, whatever that means for you - face masks, cucumber water, a warm drink, candles, the works. Pamper night (face masks and stuff)
Day 24. Make or buy something for your G/t interests (miniatures or toys, “max”iature like a giant flower pillow, fairy-themed stationary, make a giant paper mache strawberry, etc)
Day 25. Relax with a coloring page. You can use any of your favorite artist’s lineart (just make sure to get permission and/or proper attribution if you want to post it). Here's an example option from me.
Day 26. Make a list of all the things you love about G/t. It's always nice to remember the various ways this interest might benefit our lives.
Day 27. Motivate yourself to try out a new hobby by making it G/t. Take that pottery class you've been meaning to take and make a giant acorn-shaped mug. Get into cosplay so you can dress up as a borrower. Dabble with watercolors and you may end up becoming a G/t artist. Study a new language and enjoy new sizey media you couldn't understand before. Whatever speaks to you!
Day 28. Do a favor for your future self and make a self care kit for when you're having a hard time. This could include a journal or affirmation cards, or perhaps some grounding items like fidget toys, stress balls and mints. Add a little something G/t in there too. Perhaps some kind of miniature with an interesting texture, or a fidget toy in the shape of a person, or a stuffed animal of a giant ladybug to hug.
Day 29. An act of kindness can do wonders for our mental health. Send someone in the G/t community a kind comment today, whether it's a long-time friend, someone you just met in a Discord group, or a comment to your favorite G/t artist.
Day 30. Reflect on all the activities you’ve tried during this self care challenge and journal about it. What have you learned about yourself? What might you incorporate more into your self care routines going forward? Pat yourself on the back for investing some time and attention into yourself - you deserve it!

Subversive Design in Soulsborne Games
There are a lot of mechanisms to induce fear in horror games. Lighting (or lack thereof), soundtrack, jump scares, and a myriad of other things all work well to make you feel unsettled.
But my favorite strategy is to establish a pattern for the player and then break it.
Soulsborne games are infamous for this subversive game design, which is part of why they have a reputation for being "unfair". But it's important to remember that the pattern was formed from your assumptions about what the rules of the world are; no accord was ever actually made nor broken. The devs are simply anticipating the pattern you are likely to pick up on, and then breaking it to induce fear. These are horror games, after all.
I tend to find this subversiveness hilarious, so here are some of my favorites:
Boss Phases
Soulsborne games use 2-phase bosses so often that you begin to expect that the most phases a boss will ever have is 2. Thus, the second that you vanquish a foe's second phase, you breathe a sigh of relief. However, there are at least two times that Soulsborne games have broken this promise: Sister Friede of DS3 and the Scadutree Avatar of Elden Ring.
Tumblr media
Both came equipped with 3 phases, which catches people out the first time that they encounter it. You may have exhausted resources during Phase 2, not realizing you had miles more to go. As such, it's great at inducing an immediate sense of panic due to feeling underprepared.
Guiding with Diegetic Lighting
Soulsborne games love to use diegetic lighting to guide players where to go next or what to notice. This often takes the form of a carefully placed item that glows to draw your eyes, forcing you to notice something you might have otherwise overlooked. Below is Auriza Hero's Grave with an item-bearing body (already looted in this screenshot, but circled in red) hinting at a drop off point to a floor below:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, sometimes the game abuses your trust in the diegetic lighting. As you walk toward it to investigate and see what it might be signaling (if anything), an enemy might pop out and attack, or throw a molotov cocktail at your head. It's a trap!
Possibly the funniest incarnation of this is Patches. Patches will leave glowing markers to draw you toward an edge. There might even be devnotes suggesting "Something amazing this way!" to tempt you even more. But the second you get close, off the cliff you go!
Tumblr media
Pincer Attacks
Another way Fromsoftware abuses diegetic lighting and your own paranoia is pincer attacks. Because so many enemies like to hide behind corners and jump scare you, players get used to checking corners before entering a new room to grab a clearly visible item. However, sometimes you check those corners dutifully, think you're in the clear after having vanquished the corner foes, and still get attacked on your way to the item.
Tumblr media
This is because the trap was never about the enemies hiding behind the corners. They are a distraction, there to make you feel that you have been sufficiently paranoid when you have not actually been paranoid enough.
Rather the problem was never the corner enemies, but the two new enemies that drop off walls in front of you (before you get to them) and behind you (only once you've passed them), forming a pincer that is much harder to escape. Elden Ring's Fanged Imps often do this in catacombs, and the Giant Ants sometimes pull this off in Ainsel and Siofra.
Boss Doors
Sometimes a "rule" Soulsborne games break actually has nothing to do with in-game rules, but rather expectations devs know you have from other games. For example, boss arenas are often very well-signaled so that you can prepare. Either there is Grand ArchitectureTM to tell you something big is about to happen, or you have to explicitly interact with an item to enter the boss arena.
And then there is Bloodborne, who will happily let you get frightfully lost in the Forbidden Woods only to stumble into the boss arena by accident:
Tumblr media
(It's me, I stumbled in.)
Sure, there are some big stones there. But by nature of being a multi-tiered level, the Forbidden Woods is FULL of underpasses that go below broken logs or fallen graves. This one doesn't look much different at a glance. You have little reason to believe that this underpass is different from the one you saw earlier that goes underneath a gigantic fallen tree. Consequently, you might walk right in only to be surprised with a boss bar popping up on your screen.
Closing Comments
What every single one of these tactics has in common is that it's playing on your expectations of how the game universe should work, and then subverting it. And when you fall for their antics, it can be hilarious.
It's a very clever design strategy to keep players constantly on their toes. It can get you to learn a new skill or break out of a routine. Overall, it's there to maintain player interest in the game and keep things from feeling stale. And I'd say the Soulsborne games are exceptional at using it to keep you interested.
