whumptober 2023 day 3 : vows
Chicago med, Sarah/Ava other characters: Kevin (cpd), other doctors from med
warnings : forced marriage, kidnapping, chains/restraints, unwilling drugging, mentioned torture
Tumblr media
Sarah takes in a breath as she smoothes over her white dress, the material is thin and soft under her hands, it feels all too revealing. There’s a crowd of people awaiting her to walk down the aisle, a man she doesn’t know at her side, a sympathetic smile on his face as though he’s apologizing for what’s about to happen.
“You look stunning.” A grin gets sent Sarah’s way once she approaches her awaiting partner, anxiety sitting painfully in her stomach as she takes Ava in. Her dress is much more modest than Sarah’s is, gold jewelry laid over her neck to match the clip she has holding her short hair back, her makeup is light and shines under the overhead lights. She looks like any normal bride, happy and excited about her marriage, not like she drugged Sarah to get her here and like the chains still clanking at her ankles weren’t put there by Ava herself.
“Do you two have vows prepared?” Connor meets Sarah’s eyes with his own fearful look, she can’t see but she assumes he has chains around his ankles the same way Sarah does. The same way they all do: April, Natalie, Noah, Ethan, Will, even Maggie. They still look more drugged than Sarah herself is, she’s been here the longest, at the apartment complex that Ava bought but uses as her personal prison for her past coworkers.
“Sarah, the light of my life, you were perfect the minute I laid my eyes on you. You were everything I ever wanted, I knew I had to have you.” Her hands get taken into Ava’s, it makes her body shiver but she musters the best smile she can. Fighting only leads to punishment and Sarah can’t sit through another day of being strapped to the medical table in that cold room she could throw up thinking about.
“What the hells going on?!” Will yells and cuts through the quietness of the room, it startles the others more awake, the redhead pulling at the ties that hold his hands behind the chair he’s sat in.
Sarah hates to see him struggle, she wants to tell him it’s okay, that if he goes along they’ll make it out okay, but the man who walked Sarah down the aisle is moving towards Will before she can. His hands are on Halstead’s shoulders, holding him down with a grunt about staying quiet during the ceremony. Reese isn’t sure how Ava knows him, how he became apart of this, but she doesn’t think it’s by his own free will.
“No more interruptions! Today is a special day, a day for me and Sarah.” Ava shouts the first words but drops her tone to something softer. It’d almost sound sweet if Sarah didn’t know how her mood changes within seconds and how she might be plunging a knife into Reese’s skin if she’s not careful.
“Ava, what are you doing? Can’t we talk about this?” Natalie pips up with her voice shaking but that signature Natalie type of care showing through, she’s always been so hopeful.
“There’s nothing to talk about, me and Sarah love each other, we’re getting married.” One of Ava’s hands moves to brush against Sarah’s skin, Reese almost starts to cry. She feels so empty staring back into someone she once considered a close friend who know seems like a complete stranger.
“Sweetheart…” The dark haired girl trails off, looking helplessly at Sarah before turning her head towards where Will is still being whisper-yelled at by the man Sarah’s yet to hear name for.
“Will it’s okay, it’s alright.” Reese calls out as assuringly as she can, watching him continue to struggle is making her chest ache, and she knows Ava won’t tolerate it much longer.
“Kevin’s a cop, he’s going to have his unit looking for him. The people at the hospital are going to look for us.” Halstead ignores Sarah’s pleads to instead start shouting at Ava, an almost frantic tone in his voice.
“Nobody will be looking for Kevin since he quit his job, and so did you all, such a shame Goodwin wouldn’t pay you better wages. Nobody will notice you’re gone.” Even if Sarah has heard it all before, it still makes her stomach churn.
“And don’t worry Natalie, sweet little Owen is staying with his grandmother while you take some time to clear your head.” That eases Sarah as much as it does Manning, she hadn’t heard Ava mention Owen till now but it had been a constant question in the back of her mind.
“Now let’s get back to the wedding. It’s your turn to say your vows baby.” Ava’s lips curl into a smile, hands gripping Sarah’s, it takes all of Reese’s willpower to not start to sob the tears she’s been holding back since she got taken, instead she steels herself with a breath and thinks up the most romantic vows she can. The more she goes along the better it’ll be, the more of a chance they’ll have to get out of here.

Connor and the Brat {Part 3}
A/N: I would just like to say the CSA story is mine, what I went through as a child so it’s not like my brain just thought up this terrible thing to happen to Brat. TW: None for this chapter that I can think of
Tumblr media
Connor had kept his promise, he had gone back to see Brat during visiting hours on his off days, and in his breaks when he had to work. He often brought her snacks to supplement the meals she had and was happy to see she was gaining weight and he started participating in group most days. She still had days where she didn’t want to be around anyone but her overall participation was at 80% and Dr. Charles was quite happy with the progress she has made with the help of Connor. In fact Dr. Charles had told Connor that as long as she continued on this path they would be aloe to look into getting her into an IOP program within 3-4 weeks.
“Are you considering jumping ship?” Connor had been so lost in his thoughts about Brat that he hadn’t even noticed Ava sitting in the seat next to him.
“What do you mean by that?” Connor hadn’t applied for a fellowship anywhere else, trauma and cardiothoracic surgery were more than enough to keep him on his toes. Knowing Ava thought she was going to try and bait him into biting off more than he could chew so she could establish herself as the superior surgeon. She just shrugged and opened the patient portal on the computer in front of her.
“It just seems that you’re spending quite a bit of time on the psych floor, and that you’re quite popular up there. Well popular with one patient really. Olivia thinks you might have a little crush on her.” There it was Ava couldn’t just ever have a normal conversation there was always something in it for her. This time the something being getting under Connors skin by talking about Brat.
“Olivia doesn’t have two brain cells to rub together so of course she would say th. I thought you better than to listen to the gossip of 22 year old nurses Ava.” She smirked at him and stood grabbing her lab coat.
“I ship it, girls got guts and you need to hear someone tell you no every now and then.” She walked off to a trauma room leaving Connor alone with his thoughts, his timer went off letting him know they would be serving Brat lunch soon and he was sure she would be looking for him. He took the elevator up to the psych ward and only had to look for about 30 seconds before he spotted her sitting with Sarah and playing what looked to be monopoly.
“Connor! Dr. Reese is cheating!” He laughed and took his jacket off before sitting in between the two girls and looking at all of Sarah’s properties with hotels and Brat with her measles one light blue property.
“I think she’s got you beat Brat, might as well go ahead and admit defeat.” She stuck her tongue out at him and reached for the dice. Ah so she wasn’t about to lose the game without a fight, good for her.
“I’M GONNA WIN.” Sarah laughed and stood up going to get Brats tray from the lunch cart leaving just the two of us alone. “Remember when you told me to ignore Olivia and Ellis?” Brat had started whispering and fidgeting with the playing pieces so Connor pretended to find the board extremely interesting picking up on the fact she probably didn’t want people to know they were having this conversation.
“What did they do now?” She bit her lip and looked unsure as if she wanted to tell him. He dipped a finger under her chin to have her look at him and then quickly dropped his hand once he realized what he had done. “You can tell me.”
“It started off harmless at first, forgetting my breakfast tray and then writing in my paperwork that I didn’t eat so I would have to be here longer. They conveniently forgot to call me for hygiene and group a couple of times. But last night when I was taking my shower I noticed my clothes were gone and they said that they ‘forgot’ that i was only supposed to be wearing paper scrubs and so I asked for some and they said we were out and I would have to wait so I sat in the shower room waiting on scrubs until like 11:30. Then they just keep making really mean comments, they keep saying I have a crush on you, that I’m going to get you fired by asking you to come up here. I tried telling them that Dr. Charles and Dr. Reese both know and said it was fine but they’re still being mean.” She had started to cry and was now hiding her face in her hair. Perhaps there was some truth to what Ava had heard.
“I’ll take care of it okay? They’re not going to keep bothering you.” Her green eyes wide need and she started shaking her head.
“Please don’t, it’ll just make the rumors so much worse if they know I said something.” He gave her knee a reassuring squeeze before standing and brushing his pants off.
“Ellis already ran her mouth to Dr. Bekker so I can just tell Ms. Goodwin and Dr. Charles that’s where I heard it from okay?” He turned and almost ran smack dab into Sarah on his way out.
“Connor? Where are you rushing off to, don’t you normally eat lunch with Ms. Scott?”
“Two of your nurses have been bullying Brat and starting rumors and just neglecting her so I’m going to talk to Ms. Goodwin.” He saw a small smirk make its way to Sarah’s face.
“About time someone put Olivia and Ellis in their place.”

this is the closest I'll come to discourse but it baffles me that the reason people are anti-bucktommy is because of how we don't get a lot of on screen development and not to be that guy but BACK IN MY DAY we would ship two men who never interacted in canon because that's how desperate we were for gay relationships and we would create INSANE fics based on how we think these two characters would interact
like... I was in the Chicago Med fandom... 4-5 years ago? that sounds about right and I think I was one of two "Rhanik" (Connor Rhodes x Jimmy Lanik) shippers. those bitches did interact on screen but they did NOT like each other. however I was gay and desperate. shit I had lesbian mutuals who shipped Ava Bekker & Sarah Reese and I don't think they had ANY on screen interaction

public displays of affection [ chicago med ]
CHARACTERS INCLUDE ─ will halstead, connor rhodes, sarah reese, april sexton, ava bekker, ethan choi, natalie manning
Tumblr media
⋯ WILL HALSTEAD
a golden retriever when it comes to any sort of affection. sure, he understands there is a time and place for it, but some times he can’t really help himself -- you’re his partner, why wouldn’t he show you all the affection? will has no issue with kissing you on the lips, pulling you in for a tight hug, or lacing your fingers with his own. regardless of the crowd surrounding the two of you. some make fake gagging noises, but they understand the need for some physical affection from time to time
⋯ CONNOR RHODES
somewhat like will, but is a bit more reserved. relies heavily on “there’s a time and a place” and will always try to keep up a professional experience in public settings. he will, however, give you a tight hug or a soft kiss to the forehead whenever you need it -- i.e. you’re having a bad day. but, once the doors are closed, he’s very affectionate and will show you every ounce of love the second you’re alone together
⋯ SARAH REESE
very shy to show any sort of physical affection in the beginning of the relationship. she’s still trying to get past the idea that you’re even with her to begin with --  which is something that still amazes her from time to time. once she is able to gain a little confidence, she has no problem reaching down to lace her fingers with your own, before giving your hand a tight squeeze. it’s simple, but it’s very grounding for the two of you and a quick reminder you have each other’s back. any other sort of affection is saved for more private moments when other’s aren’t around
⋯ APRIL SEXTON
loves holding your hand -- she’s a nurse, and a lot of her care comes in the form of contact. she’ll hold your hand if neither of you are busy, give you a few grounding squeezes, or press a kiss to the back of your hand. uses it in the sense to comfort you, while also telling you she’s here for you
⋯ AVA BEKKER
finds public displays of affection to be more on the unprofessional side -- she’s trying to work, and as much as she would like to, kisses cannot be given at this time. however, if she’s on lunch or has a break in-between patiences, she will 100% provide you with the affection you are looking for // lacking throughout the day. it’s also taxing on her as well, but she’s got a better control on her affection when compared to her coworkers
⋯ ETHAN CHOI
much like ava, isn’t too fond of showing public affection but there are instances where he would. the end of shift is usually when he shows the most affection -- seeing he’s super tired and just ready to go home with you for the night. he’ll hold your hand, kiss your neck and cheek. really just turning into a pile of mush once he gets his affection
⋯ NATALIE MANNING
becomes so busy during the day, giving affection is probably one of the last things on her mind, but she always tries to make room for you and the affection she does give. arm around your shoulder // waist, nuzzling into your neck, pressing kisses to your cheek or the tips of your fingers -- she’ll do it all. does stand on the side of hestiancey when it comes to doing so around others, but she loves you so it equals out

HC for Rheese please 🤩🤩
(I just want to say that I will be including this HC in the later chapters of Functional Dysfunction, so this is kinda like a very early sneak peek, read at your own risk)
When Connor realizes that he has romantic feelings for Sarah he feels ashamed
Not because there's anything wrong with Sarah (because there's not, she amazing), but because he's almost a decade older than her
When he was learning to drive she was learning fractions
When he went to university in New York City for his undergrad she was still a kid in elementary school
It makes him feel creepy
So whenever he feels like he needs a reminder he searches for Halstead or Bekker and says 'I need you to tell me that I'm an asshole' (or jackass or whatever)
Halstead and Bekker are more than happy to oblige at the beginning, but then they get suspicious, and then they get concerned
So they make an agreement to pull him aside and talk to him
When they do, they all end up crammed together in a janitor's closet
'What's wrong with you?'
'What's wrong with us? No, what's wrong with you?'
'Yeah, what's with using us to further your self-depreciation?'
'I'm not'
'Bullshit'
'Yes you are'
Connor is saved by the bell when they all get paged for a mass casualty event coming into the ED
'This isn't over, Rhodes'
So they're all working away, helping people, saving lives
But when it's over Will and Ava look over at Connor, and then they see it
They see how his eyes go soft looking at Sarah, how relaxed his body becomes, how... Happy he looks just being around her
Connor never looks happy
And then they realize; he's in love with Sarah
He watches Sarah leave
And then suddenly it's like a switch flips, his guard is up, he tenses, and suddenly he looks ashamed
Connor looks around and spots Will and Ava and understanding flashes through his eyes
He knew that they knew
For the next week, Connor went very far out of his way to avoid his two frenemies, switching shifts, avoiding Molly's, taking public transit so they can't ambush him at his car, etc.
But they've had enough because here's the other thing they've noticed; Sarah loves him too
So, they manage to sneak past the security at his apartment building, knock on his door, and barge in the second he starts opening the door
'What the hell is wrong with you guys?!'
'We're here to talk, Rhodes'
'Now shut up and sit down. We're here to discuss your feelings for Sarah'
So they sit there for hours, talking about all of it, his self-deprecation, how Sarah definitely has feelings for him too, how he deserves happiness, how the age gap really isn't that bad
It's clear Connor doesn't really believe them, but he admits it, which is progress
As they leave his apartment Will and Ava talk about how Natalie and Maggie ship them, and how they unwittingly jumped on board
'Nat's even got a plan to get them together, but Maggie and I have held her back'
'I'm with Natalie on this, now that I know what's making him mope around like a kicked puppy something can actually be done about it'
'Oh come on, he's not that bad'
'You don't have to work directly with him every day'

FBI au for reesker? thank youuu 😃
Agent Hotchner was nice enough, Sarah decided, but he was intimidating and hard to read which made her feel bad at her job before it had begun.
“Everyone, this is Agent Sarah Reese, she’ll be joining us for the time being.”
It was a blonde woman with sharp features that spoke first, her accent catching Sarah off guard, “Agent Bekker, nice to meet you, Reese.”

Treat You Right - Erin Lindsay x Reader - Chicago PD
Request: Heyo! I know you said you weren't writing one Chicago requests at the moment, which is fine this can just sit in your drafts until you are, no pressure. Anyway the request is Erin wants to date the reader, and the reader is adamant she won't date anyone, but Erin keeps doing really sweet things and it slowly chips away at the readers emotional walls until she says something which makes the reader blush and the reader finds themselves head over heels for her and then reader confess. Ty :)
"Conceal, don't feel. Don't let them know..."
Why did you put your phone on shuffle? You asked yourself, grimacing at the Frozen soundtrack as it shook up your jogging pace.
You were almost at the little bakery your friend from university adored. Smiling at the memory, you jogged past it, passing the fruit and veg market as you turned a corner, getting closer and closer to home.
You were in the shower when you phone buzzed, interrupting your music. Stepping out onto the mat, you pulled the towel around your body as you glanced over the message.
There was a new case.
Getting ready for work, you got as far as stepping onto the sidewalk when you spotted her pulling up.
"Want a lift? I have coffee and doughnuts." Erin asked, stepping out to walk over to you.
"My mother always told me not to talk to strangers." You replied, raising an eyebrow at Erin's smirk.
"I'm not a stranger, I'm your colleague who got you your coffee and doughnut order, and is offering you a lift into work." Erin repleid, leaving you to smile.
"Sure, my flirty as hell colleague who had to ask Jay for my coffee and doughnut order because I know you did not know it before." You replied as you slipped into the passenger seat of her car.
"You can't prove that. Maybe I'm just observant." Erin scoffed, leaving you to give her a look of disbelief.
"Sure. Let's just get to the district." You replied, looking out of the window before taking a bite of the doughnut that Erin had bought you. Your eyes widened when you realised she'd gotten your favourite one.
Voight raised an eyebrow at you and Erin as the two of you walked in. Erin was laughing at you downing your coffee, watching you throw the empty cup in the bin before the two of you headed up to Intelligence.
"Lindsay really likes S/n apparently. Gossip is, S/n is adamant they won't date anyone, but the betting pool says otherwise." Platt explained to Voight, who just huffed in amusement.
///
You weren't entirely sure how Erin was learning what your favourite things were. First it was your coffee order and favourite doughnut.
Then she knew your favourite pizza toppings at game night at Kim's.
"So, pizza? What toppings are we talking? Pepperoni, Hawaiian, mushrooms, little bit of everything?" Kim began to ramble off the list, leaving you to just stare at her whilst Erin chuckled, asking whether you would be having the topics you knew were your favourite.
"How did you-"
"Lucky guess." Erin grinned, winking at you as you reached for your drink, immediately downing it as Kim gave you a confused look.
///
"So I'm not sure who they were asking for, but it definitely wasn't me that parked in their spot, y'know-" You were walking into Intelligence with Adam and Kim when Kevin caught your attention.
"What's up, Kev?" You enquired, tilting your head to the side as Kevin nodded towards your desk.
"I swear, if someone spilled coffee on my desk again, you will find all your pens missing- what?" You murmured, cutting yourself off as you spotted the bouquet of flowers on the desk. Flowers that were significant to you.
"Oooh someone's got an admirer!" Kim teased, nudging you as you cleared your throat, brushing off her teasing so you could look at the tag.
"So, who's it from?" Kim asked, leaving you to hide the tag from her.
"Someone..." You replied, slipping the tag into the inside pocket of your jacket as you felt eyes burn into the side of your face.
///
"So, what's conflicting you?" A voice asked, leaving you to glance up from your drink.
"What makes you think I'm being conflicted, Doctor Bekker?" You retorted, sipping your drink whilst mantaining her gaze as Ava rolled her eyes.
"Because you're not at Molly's. You're instead avoiding that detective you work with because she likes you. That conflicts you because you were so adamant after your last relationship that you wouldn't date anyone."
"Wow... for a moment I thought you were Doctor Reese. You two have been getting cosy for a while now... I ship it." You teased, leaving Ava to roll her eyes again.
"Okay, instead of shifting the conversation onto my relationship, how about we talk about your potential one with Detective Lindsay." Ava replied, ordering a drink as you just sighed.
"You already summarised it as 'I was so adamant after my last relationship that I wouldn't date anyone' and then Erin turns up with my coffee order and favourite doughnuts and drives me to work, she knew my favourite pizza toppings at game night at Kim's, she even got me flowers." You replied, pulling out a pressed version of the flowers Erin had got you from your phone case.
"Wait, the type of flowers that..."
"Yeah, I don't know how she knew, but she knew... on the anniversary too." You replied, downing your drink so you didn't start crying.
"You could take a chance on her, you know." Ava suggested, giving you a look as you huffed, trying to hide how much your face felt like it was burning.
"Well, she broke down some of your walls at least, seeing as you look flustered right now." Ava teased, poking your cheek as you glared at her.
"Whatever. I need time to think about it." You replied, your gaze shifting to the bar as Ava just sighed, giving your shoulder a gentle squeeze with her hand as her phone pinged.
"Erin already treats you better than your ex ever did, Y/n. Remember to keep that in mind... do you want a lift home? Sarah's waiting outside." Ava asked, leaving you to nod as you paid your bill and got ready to leave.
"Hey Y/n, babe." Sarah smiled as you slipped into the backseat, leaving Ava to slip into the passenger side, kissing Sarah on the cheek as she sat down.
///
"Erin, can I talk to you after work?" Your voice had Erin pause in her path on the way to her desk.
"Sure. Is everything okay?" Erin enquired, only gaining a half shrug from you as Voight walked in with a case.
///
"So, Y/n, what did you want to talk about? Are you alright?" Erin's voice snapped you out of your staring contest with your locker as she approached.
"Can we talk at my apartment?" Your voice cracking had Erin's smile fade, a serious look in her face as she just nodded, grabbing her stuff to go.
///
Flicking your keys into the tray after locking the door, you felt Erin's presence as she walked around your living room, following you to the kitchen as you opened the fridge.
"So..." Erin began, pausing as she spotted a photo frame of you, Ava and Sarah from last June, at the Chicago Pride Parade.
"Um... I need to know this first, but, all that flirting and the nice things you've been doing for me, those are because you like me, right? It's not something else... I'm asking because I was so adamant after what happened with my last relationship that I wouldn't date anyone but... I like you, Erin... and that scares me." You avoided Erin's eyes by fiddling with the closest cushion on your couch.
"I do like you, Y/n. I like you because you're you, it's not for some manipulation or ulterior motive and I'm not going to treat you like you were treated in your last relationship. I'd treat you right, if you let me." Erin began, walking over to you so she could take your hands from the cushion.
Erin's eyes widened as you finally met her gaze, staring into your soul via teary e/c eyes.
"Do you really mean that?" Your voice rasped, leaving you to grimace whilst a rebellious tear made it's way down your face.
"Yeah, I do, Y/n, I really do." Erin replied, gently wiping away the tear from your face before you pushed yourself forwards and into her arms.
Erin's arms wrapped around you as you sobbed into her shoulder.

First Encounter - Lymphoblastic!au
(A/N) First fic for my lymphoblastic!au! Enjoy! This is really just setting up for the rest of the fic, so it's not the most interesting thing ever. It sets up the dynamic though!
-
-
"So here's my digs right now," Ava chuckled, showing the FaceTime camera the full span of the room, "This is my first time in the new Oncology ward, the room is nice, the view is shit, and everything..." She pointed and zoomed in at the door handle, then at an unstable chair, "Is suicide proof."
Connor laughed, "Well, you can't say it's for no reason!"
Ava's brief stint in the psych ward at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center was proof of that.
"Well, yeah, it's nice that they thought of that," She rolled her eyes, and sat back down on her bed, "The new mattresses are comfy."
"They're some fancy memory foam or something," Connor shrugged, sipping his coffee, "They splashed out on them. I guess a chief complaint of Oncology patients is lack of sleep."
"Maybe that would improve if they didn't shine flashlights in our faces all the time. I would like to die in peace."
There was an uncomfortable silence.
"It's a joke, Connor," She said, weakly, "Laugh."
Connor gave a forced laugh, and Ava started to laugh herself. Connor's laugh grew harder, and more real.
"Hey, I've gotta get to work," Connor said, through his laughter, "I'll pop up and say hello when I get the chance."
Ava glanced out the window, "Alright," She said after awhile, "I'll see you then."
They hung up soon after, and Ava was alone with her thoughts, and her seemingly endless headache. She pulled off her wig, something she hadn't had the chance to do since she got to the hospital. She peeled each piece of wig tape off, wincing as it pulled at her skin. She never bothered wearing a wig in the hospital, even as a young teenager.
She collapsed into bed, pulling her weighted blanket over her and sighing.
Any time she was admitted she always brought her own blankets and pillows. They helped her feel at home. And every admission brought a significant risk of death, and if she was dying, she was going to die under the comfort of her own blankets.
Call it childish, but she brought her own stuffed animal too. A bear her mom bought her when she was first diagnosed.
She hugged the bear close to her chest, and curled around it. Her head pounded, and she felt a pang of... Something, an emotion, deep in her chest.
There was a knock on her door, and it was opened seconds later. Ava never understood why doctors knocked if they were just going to open the door anyways.
"Hey, you're going to have a roommate in the next few hours," A nurse that Ava recognized from a few admissions ago, spoke, "Please, please be nice. I obviously can't tell you anything, but just keep in mind what your first admission was like for you."
That stuck with Ava.
"Mama," Ava's voice shook. She widened the bathroom door, letting light spill into the room. Her now-bloody hospital gown hung off of her, and the light jolted her mom awake.
"Avie? What happened?"
"I don't know," Her voice heightened in fear, holding the blood-soaked tissue to her nose, "Can you call the doctor please."
Ava's mom put her glasses on and looked around, "Moeder van God, what happened to you?"
"My nose," Ava sniffled, spitting out blood from her mouth. There was blood everywhere - Her gown, her hands, her face, the floor, her bed...
"We need a doctor!" Ava's mom called out, pushing the call button on the wall and rushing to her daughter, "Quickly!"
A nurse came in a few minutes later, "Page Dr. Sal," The nurse yelled out into the hall and flicked the overhead light on, "It's okay sweetie, we're going to get you cleaned up."
Ava was sobbing at this point, shaking at the sight of her own blood, "Why isn't it stopping?"
Sarah was wheeled into the room at around lunch time, at the same time that the meal cart came around. The meal cart nurse set Ava's lunch down on her bed tray, and set Sarah's lunch on her side table.
Sarah looked pale, and thin. She had a big, ugly bruise on one of her arms, and a second smaller bruise on her opposite hand. They had her IV line on the thumb-side of her forearm, and a saline infusion running into it.
"Ava, your chemotherapy will be set up in..." The nurse bringing Sarah glanced at the clock, "Half an hour? Probably as soon as you're done eating. I'll come back in just a minute to give you your pre-medication, and then we'll start once those meds kick in."
Ava nodded, opening her food. Ah, breakfast for lunch. Two mildly soggy pieces of french toast with strawberries, a little cup of syrup, a cup of apple juice with a foil lid creatively labeled "Apple Juice", and about half a cup of scrambled eggs.
One thing she'll reluctantly compliment Gaffney on is the food. Reluctantly. Very reluctantly. For the most part this hospital frustrated her to no end and if she never came here again she would be thrilled, but the food was not terrible. Which was a glowing review, as far as Ava was concerned.
Ava snapped a picture and sent it to Connor's Snapchat. A tradition, to send him her hospital meals before eating and then send him a rating when she finished.
"Is the food here okay?"
Ava looked up at Sarah, who was now inspecting her food.
"Ah, it's not terrible, but hospital food is never great."
"I wouldn't know," She laughed weakly, "I've never even been to a hospital before," She confessed.
"Lucky you," Ava announced, "The french toast is easily the best out of all of the meals. I think I've tried almost all of them," She paused for a moment, poking her straw through the foil lid of her apple juice, "I've also tried the nearby restaurants that deliver here. Some of them throw in free delivery if you tell them you're in the oncology ward. Cancer kid perks," She joked, and Sarah sat in uncomfortable silence.
They ate quietly.
The nurse showed back up a few minutes later with several syringes in hand, "Ready Ava?"
Ava nodded, and fished her brand-new triple-lumen PICC line (the doctors really hooked her up with the good line) out of her blankets, "Ready as I'll ever be."
The nurse pushed Benadryl first, which made Ava's head feel heavy. She always felt like she had to consciously remember to breathe when she had IV Benadryl - It hit so much harder than oral Benadryl.
Zofran came next. She felt tired, but she really wouldn't be able to gauge the effects until her infusion started.
"We'll run the antibiotics through the port so they hit the bacteria directly, and we'll run your chemo and anything other than the antibiotics through your PICC," The nurse explained, "We want to eradicate this bug but we're concerned about the mass in your brain... We don't want to stop chemo and give it a chance to grow bigger."
Ava nodded, watching the nurse finish off her line, "When will my infusion start?"
The nurse looked at the clock, "Probably about one o' clock, about half an hour from now."
Ava nodded, and continued to eat after the nurse finished using her line.
She finished right before the nurse came back in to start her infusion, a clear bag with a bright yellow label, "CHEMOTHERAPY DRUGS", with a radioactivity symbol. Out of the corner of her eye, Ava saw Sarah pale at the scary label.
"Have fun," The nurse joked, and Ava rolled her eyes.
"Thanks, I'll try."
Sarah watched the medicine flow into Ava's line, and almost felt an urge to cry.
"Would you stop gawking at me?" Ava snapped.
"Sorry, sorry," Sarah squeaked, moving her eyes back to her phone.
"What's your diagnosis?" Ava pried, curious as ever.
"Leukemia."
Ava sighed, annoyed at the lack of specificity, "What kind?"
"I don't know, does it matter?"
Ava huffed, "Of course it matters. They're different."
"What are all the types? Maybe I'd recognize it when I hear it?"
"I can't list every single type of Leukemia," Ava rolled her eyes, "Is it acute or chronic?"
"What's the difference?"
"Nevermind," Ava muttered.
"I'm sorry that I'm not a doctor," Sarah replied, sarcastically, "I mean, what do you want me to do? I was diagnosed yesterday. I spent the night in the emergency room. Do you want me to become a doctor while I'm laying in a pool of my own blood?"
Ava felt a pang of guilt.
"I'm sorry, Mrs. Bekker, your daughter has Acute Myeloid Leukemia, a type of blood cancer."
"Sorry I just..." Ava's voice grew small, "I didn't know."
"Yeah, whatever. It's fine. I'm going to take a nap."
"Okay."
