Ava could see Beatrice, curled up in bed with her hands beneath her chin as she stared forward to the other side she used to occupy.

She laid down beside her, careful, as if she could somehow disturb her. As if Beatrice would somehow notice. She rested her head on the pillow, looking right back at her, trying to get a sense if Beatrice was even breathing.

One, two, three... her teeth clenched, she sucked in a breath like it was painful. Ava inched closer, wanting to reach out. "Bea, it's alright," she whispered. "I'm sorry I left." It was for the best. It was for the best– Fuck anyone who tried to tell her otherwise, they didn't fucking know–

Beatrice, without any sign of hearing her, buried her face in to the pillow, another breath racketing through her lungs. Another. Another. Another. It was continuous, until it turned into sobbing that made her entire body shake. Ava felt the pressure in her chest. The weight she was bearing from the emptiness she had left behind.

"Hey, hey. Bea. I'm here." Ava got closer. Impossibly closer. Reya wouldn't be happy with her later. She didn't care. "Bea," she placed a hand on her back. She missed the sensation of her warmth. She couldn't feel it anymore. "It's okay, I'm okay, it's–" her fingers curled, went right through the fabric of Beatri– well, her sweater. She hadn't washed it, it still smelt like her. "I miss you too." She buried her face closer to hers. Breathed in. "Shit– I miss you so much. I'm sorry."

Slowly, I rise to my feet and follow him. The dark is quickly chasing the light from the sky, like a wolf after a white lamb. The teeth of dusk are grinning up over the clouds and snarling jaggedly around the sun, and in the patches of shadow the river looks like something to be afraid of, cold and depthless. I look back at Gáspár, his face still suffused in sunlight, as if the shadows can't touch him at all.
