What I Wanted for Vaylin

I had always planned to write my own version of the events of both Knights of the Fallen Empire and Knights of the Eternal Throne. But I don't think that will happen. So I’m going to just put together the bits I have written as a collection of short stories, so to speak.

For my version of Chapter 8 of KOTET, Vaylin does not die, but of her own accord, she transcends. She is there in the Outlander’s mind for the fight with Valkorion, too. Again, of her own accord. Then she is gone.

And then this happens some time later, though time is not important anymore.

Tython

Jayel and Releth Blaymuir waited. And waited. Their daughter, too young for an official name but who would have been called Dannai, was in the Maker’s hands now. She’d been born, barely alive. Her surrogate had caught a fever and did not survive the birth. Now, it looked like Dannai’s heart would not survive to be given the name they wanted for her.

“She’ll make it, love,” Jayel said, his gruff, farmer’s hand covering that of his husband of six years.

“I can only have hope, Jay.”

“That’s all she asks.”

Nowhere, and everywhere

I thought being rid of Father would make things better. I thought watching Mother’s form fade from the Outlander’s mind, would make things better. Watching Arcann, his broken body, attempt to convince the Outlander he was worth saving. I thought these were my vengeance. But I was wrong.

Transcending on Odessen changed me. Triumphing over Father changed me. I am better, but my existence continues and that is not better at all.

Because now I am alone. Truly alone. I don’t know where I am, or what “where” even is now.

Yes, I am free. But it’s dark and ugly and nothing makes me happy. I don’t want to be free anymore.

There has to be a place for me. I will find it.

Surgeon Maya Gormley stepped away from the table, leaving the rest to the Maker and the staff. Two nurses were crying as they cleaned up the baby’s chest. Her assistant would sew her up so her clan could have their burial. Her fathers would be right outside the surgical suite’s doors. It was Maya’s job to tell them she failed. She could not save their daughter.

Here, and there

I don’t deserve a second chance. But I want one. The Outlander would have given me one, and that made me angry, before, when I was trapped in the body in the life I hated. The body whose Force power I could never control except to do the wrong thing. Until the end, of course. I freed myself. I left the useless throne for others. I was done with it anyway. It was my time. I didn’t need Mother or Arcann or the Outlander.

I’m sure if I look long enough I will find my second chance.

Tython, a breath later

Maya walked toward the surgical suite’s doors. Right before the autosensor opened it for her, she heard one of the nurses, Kayl, cry out.

“The baby. She’s back!”

Maya flew back to the table. All the sensors were reading optimal life signs. The baby’s dark red skin was starting to recolor. Her left nublet of a lek twitched, then her right. 

“Get the incubation tent set up. Give her heart and lungs all the support they need,” she ordered.

After ten minutes, the child was breathing on her own. Rina, the other surgical nurse, had put a sterile gown on the child. She was young enough, they could heal that scar up and no one would ever know how close she’d come to death.

Her fathers were crying out in the hallway, for joy. Maya made the nurses promise not to tell them how close she had come to not making it. As the baby lay sleeping peacefully, she reached in the tent and patted the child’s head.

“I hope you make something of this second chance, little one. You have the Maker’s touch all over you.”

Ruin.

Kannus has since been outfitted with an ear piece, and is inside the palace, but because of that and a large coldblood lending his jacket, he has not been picked up on the autosensors yet.

The hall is cratered and smoking where Kankri's guard have been fighting with those who still serve the true crown, and there are four corpses in the hall. The first two are cut deep by the wound of a large axe, the third has a spear still in his chest, ribs splintered into a temple by the hasty attempt to remove it before it was abandoned. The fourth is one Kannus recognizes as having gone ahead with Cronus, eyes wide and jaw slack, a crossbow bolt of considerable size in his throat.

His gaze sharpens. Kankri prefers guns - they alert others to problem areas and promote accountability. This isn’t one of his soldiers, so it might be Karkat; he knows that he’s trained with several different weapons. When they were finally introduced by Mituna, it was one of the things that they talked about. Just to make sure that he’s not still in the area, he sends one of his entourage ahead of him.

There’s a wet thunk, almost before the bolt sprouts from the side of the troll’s head - no one coming up this hall is a friendly, and Adhafera knows that. Despite the explosions, she’s stayed in place - none of them have gone off near Karkat’s room, and Val can handle himself.

Cronus passed by before she got here, she found this one torturing the one whose ribs more resembled a tent all alone, and fixed him right up. Now that there are more incoming, she keeps her crossbow at her shoulder, and her eye, glasses fixed in place by her helmet, and her her jaw set. Unlike her spade, she's no stranger to killing. She doesn't hesitate. Not when the next comes around the corner, either, holding up a stout shield - she only flicks the nose down and shoots for the ribs instead. It meets its target with a dull noise, and the guard rattles in agony as he and his lung collapse together. She lets herself breathe for just a second and cranks the next bolt back with a creak, and she is ready again.

Well. That is going to be a problem, he thinks. He turns to the soldiers following him and smiles almost unanimously up at him, scarlet eyes dead and cold.

"He can't shoot you all," he says quietly. "Just go take the crossbow. And mind your heads."

He frowns when none one jumps to follow his orders, and sweeps his hand out toward the hall, as if to say After You! But still, though a few of the rebels that came with Cronus move forward, some of the palace guard reach out after them.

"That's not the prince," says one. "He isn't one for ranged weapons. He does just fine with them, but he's a hand-to-hand sort."

Kannus's face darkens, and he grabs the speaker by his armor and pulls him.

"All the more reason to get the fuck out there and kill them," he snarls, and throws him out into the hallway, sending him staggering and tripping over the body of his comrade. Without a second of hesitation, while he's mid-collapse, another bolt whizzes down the hall and embeds itself in his spine. He screams, but doesn't struggle much as his cord is severed below his ribs, and his screams go silent as the next bolt goes straight through his jaw and throat.

"Go," Kannus commands again. "Or am I meant to believe that you are the ones who came to do my bidding? Do you serve the crown, or don't you, worms?"

Well against the better judgement of the group, the dozens with Kannus run around the corner at the reminder. This is their emperor, after all - and it wasn't like they didn't expect some of them to die in the process of restoring his throne. Just, none of them wanted it to be them.

He can hear bodies hitting the floor and the Whshh! Creak! of the crossbow as he walks behind the crowd. His fins flick as he picks up the sound of the stranger's boots backing over the polished floor as they push and advance, and soon, he can hear her grunts as she switches to the axe that she took from Cronus's man.

The screams are...delicious. They are as close to euphoria as he can still feel, which is the absolute most muted niggle of joy, and only because he sapped all of the feeling out of the soldiers he killed recently. He can't even feel the palace floor beneath his feet.

When the last man falls, they are face-to-face, the stranger covered in blood and only just breathing hard, and himself scruffy, dirty, bloodied, and calm.

Adhafera releases the axe as she swings it through and buries it in the last of...fucking fuck, it must have been thirty trolls. How many are there? She's seen most of them before, she'd even say, and now...

...That can't be Karkat.

He's small. Downright tiny, even, like Karkat was before his molt, but black-chitin-clad like he is now. He has curly hair, and it looks like it's been growing out for a long, long time, but it still barely passes his shoulders. Same scarlet eyes, same long, devastatingly pretty eyelashes, same beautiful jawline...but no. This is Kannus. Unlike her Prince's flawless, freshly-molted black, his chitin is pitted and knotted with grey-white scars, his eyes are dull to the point of lifelessness. His leg is twisted slightly wrong where it must have been broken in the collapse, but it doesn't even seem to bother him! He holds himself differently, too, and he has a thin, straight nose with a high bridge - almost the exact opposite of the one that Val has passed on to like all of his offspring.

There's something else about him. He makes her uneasy. He's not right. He doesn't look down or react as he picks his way over - not around - the bodies of the dead and dying. Some of them groan out their last breaths under his bare feet, his incredible density snapping bones and crushing weaker bodies flat, forcing all of the horrific gore that that involves. Karkat and Val are like that, too, she remembers - not numb to suffering and perfectly willing to cause it, but way heavier than they look. Something about how their muscles work, they're really just packed in there.

"Well, then," he says, and his voice is completely chilling in how similar it is to Karkat's when he's just waking up from oversleeping. It's like if Karkat wasn't so fucking loud all the time. It's like when he sings. "Who might you be?"

Instead of answering, though, she hoists her crossbow and unloads the first bolt into him. When it punches straight through his center of mass, definitely into a lung, and buries itself to the fletching, he's barely pushed back. He looks down at it for a second, splays his hand around it, and then closes it there. He rips the broadheaded bolt out, and it pulls back with cloth and chitin and raw, scarlet meat on it. His ratty red shirt is ripped and shows a bigger, gnarlier scar. Even while she's watching, he snaps his fingers over the wound, and the bleeding stops.

He has magic, which Karkat went to great pains to learn from Delphine, who came from an entirely different timeline.

"You've got some bad fucking manners," he tells her, switching around the grip to threaten her with it and walking toward her. "Terrible for you that that exhausted my very thin patience."

She takes a few running steps backward while she loads in her next bolt. She usually loads it properly, but she doesn't have time or room to use the stirrup, and yanks the bolt back into the retention spring with her upper body strength alone. The cam screams for mercy, but she ignores it as she unloads a second - creak! - third - Shree! - fourth - Whine! - fifth - groan! - sixth--

Snap!!

Adhafera screams as her left cam breaks, and the tensed string whips back, catching across her mouth and cheek and flaying her face, and drops her crossbow in the process, but Kannus is still advancing. One bolt cut his forehead, but didn't penetrate, even though she knows she was dead on with that shot. What is this troll fucking made of!?

It's going to have to be a physical fight now, and she draws a wicked knife from her boot. Never unprepared, she doesn't let herself fall even with the shock of her own blood joining the cold rainbow of gore on her face and her best armor.

The fight is brief. He flicks his wrist, and some green light surrounds his hand, making it crackle with power, she grabs for him and stabs him, and then realizes her mistake as he shoves that bolt into her body between her armor as hard as he can in the short space, which is so hard that it knocks her back a half dozen feet. The metal of her armor scrapes with an ugly screech across the floor, and he leaps upon her, ripping away the plates and roaring in her face, his eyes bright with the fire that only violence ignites in truly mad trolls. She pulls another knife from her belt, smaller, and swings out for his face, and cuts his cheek and mouth.

His blood spatters her, and it is so fucking hot compared to anything else that's been happening, but he doesn't even slow down. His face splits from the cut as he grins down at her, and he grabs her arm and rips off her vambrace with his small, sharp teeth.

"You really fucked up now, kid!" he screams, and as he rips apart the underparts of her armor, she knows he's right, but still she stabs again for his throat.

She hits, but unlike with his cheek, her blade glances off, and with the awkward way it turns her wrist, she feels something tear.

"You should know when to just die, you ugly fucking mutant freak!" Kannus grabs her by her face, digging his blunt claws into her cheek, temple, and forehead until she feels her face split, and that green light reignites. Hand covering half of her face and all of her left eye, he releases a blast of energy directly on her.

The agony is positively numbing, turning pain into her face into a brokenness of any feeling in her whole body as her head snaps back and her mouth opens, a scream tearing out of her throat until what rises from her is not sound, but smoke. He's burning her. She failed; Val was right to be afraid. She isn't going to be able to protect them.

Little does she know that it's far from over for her, as Kannus stands from her only to stomp on her leg over and over again, like he's trying to put out an accidentally set fire, twisting metal with her flesh and shattering the bone, and kicks her down the hall as though she were a pebble on the street, all the way talking to her, casually as though she stood beside him.

"I was really impressed, you know, when you killed everyone Cronus brought to help out. Well, everyone of Cronus's I brought." Kick, clatter, roll. She feels a rib give.

"I was going to give you a chance there. I can always use the best." Kick, clatter, roll. Her spine is on fire.

"I don't know how Kankri does this. Make people like him. He was never likable when he was a kid." Kick, skid, shriek! She can't even yell as he kicks her head.

"I'm sure he told you what I'm like. So I'm sure you know I'm going to kill him and start fresh, if Cronus hasn't gotten to him first. He just told me he's in position...Though, all that said, Karkat's got some promise. I could probably still fix him." He puts his foot on her chest and wiggles it until it's right on her breastbone, and when he leans his weight on it, she groans, and her sternum creaks, but doesn't give up. She's fucking blacking out, and he's reaching for her.

"I can at least use you for what you're worth. Freak. I should do you a favor and take that ugly fucking tail, but it's not like there'd be a point." He grabs her head again, but this time, it's different. He doesn't blast her, but she blearily sees something light in his eyes as he does something much worse.

And fuck, it feels like dying, what he's doing - she's in more pain than she thought was possible, but somewhere in the current of her thought she knows what he's doing. He's going to use his empathy to blast her with her own chemicals, and kill her like that!

What a fucking way to go, shattered by some fucked up monster talking down to her on the floor, failing her kismesis...

No one would even know what happened to her.

She tears her throat bloody with one more ragged scream as the pain and rage and fear and joy and sadness and everything light her all at once, and then everything goes dark.

Kannus licks his lips as he straightens up, rolling his shoulders. This time, he doesn't bother pulling out all the bolts as he limps his way up the hall. There are more important things to attend to, and it's not like they hurt.

He leaves Adhafera there on the ground, because he has to find Kankri. If there's one thing he should have learned from dealing with his offspring when he was young, though, it's this:

You should never turn your back on a body.

In den folgenden Jahren wuchs der Hersteller immer weiter und übernahmen 2001 den dänischen Konkurrenten Gram Domestic sowie im Folgejahr die deutsche Premiere Hausgerätetechnik GmbH. Amica Waschmaschinen werden zurzeit in zwei Werken im polnischen Wronki produziert. Die Abteilung für Kühlgeräte und Waschmaschinen wurde im Dezember 2009 für 205 Mio. Złoty (76 Mio. US-$) an den koreanischen Samsung-Konzern verkauft, der fortan die Herstellung dieser Produkte übernimmt.
