There are certain kinds of cameras these days that are truly impressive in not only how mechanically simple they are but also in the kinds of pictures they can take. The reason this is so is that the tiny, tiny light-proof box, with its equally tiny aperture (pinhole-sized, literally) is paired to an equally-tiny CCD, which can send a high-quality digital image to wherever the camera is programmed to send the image to. And these cameras are very tiny, which makes them extremely hard to detect in a surveillance situation. If considering using one, keep in mind that some CCD semiconductor image sensors use a lot of power, meaning the camera may not be able to run for very long.Also, a pinhole camera has no lens, therefore any such camera will depend upon the brightness of the light projected in the viewing area, though a CCD can make good use of available light. If the lights are turned off, no image will result. If the light conditions keep changing, image quality may suffer greatly. If they fail to work properly, it's usually because the CCD has drained and the tiny battery powering it needs to be replaced. Just replace the battery and let it get back to work doing whatever it's being used to do.

“Hello?” you call out. You’re hesitant to walk further than where you’re hovering in the doorway because you’re surrounded by suspended cars and tools scattered on the ground, and knowing your own tendency for being reckless underfoot you think it best to stay where you are. Also, though you desperately want to think good of everyone you meet, you’re a woman in an auto shop. Alone.
“You alright, miss?”
To your left, a young guy rolls out from underneath a car and stands. He’s short and covered in what you assume is oil, but he has a kind face that puts you at ease.
“Hi,” you say, trying your best to sound more confident than you are. “I, uh, my car’s busted, I think.”
He walks over to you, wringing his hands with a scruffy rag, and you try your hardest to not shuffle backwards.
“What’s up with it?”
“It, uh, stutters, I guess, when I turn it on. Sometimes it takes a few goes to get it goin’.”
His face moulds into a hard, concerned expression, before cutting into a grin. His whole face scrunches when he does, and you try to ignore the way you sense the kindness slipping away.
“We’ll take a look at it for ya, no worries. You got the keys?”
You dig your hand in the pocket of your jeans and when you drop the key in his hand, he seizes yours and says, “we’ll get it sorted, don’t you worry.”
His words tone drips with a saccharine sweetness that claws under your skin. You pull your hand from his grip with a small, “thanks,” and he says, “come write your number down for me, babe, and we’ll give you a call when we’re done.”
You follow him quietly through the shop into a small office at the back. It’s lit by ugly white lights and made up of dark faux-leather couches and a makeshift wooden counter, where there’s a book open. He hands you a pen and you write your name and your number, as well as the make of your car and the licence plate, and try all the while to ignore his eyes boring holes in the side of your face.
You don’t see any other mechanics as you walk back through the shop, except a floppy mass of dark, curly hair poking out under another car.

The phone rings at half four that afternoon. You’re on the couch, house-bound without a car to get you anywhere, wasting the day away with daytime television and a book.
When you answer the phone, the voice on the other end isn’t the one you spoke to earlier. It’s softer, kinder, and you can tell that whoever it is, they’re tired.
“Hey, is this y/n?”
“Hi, yeah. That’s me.”
“Hey, your car’s ready if you wanna come pick it up.”
“Thanks, yeah, I’ll be there by five?”
“See ya then.”
The line goes dead before you can say goodbye back.

By the time you reach the garage it’s half five and dark. It’s that weird time of year, at the break of fall, where the days are warm and the dark brings blistering cold. So, naturally, you’re freezing, late and embarrassed.
You tread over the threshold at the garage and, just like earlier, hesitate before moving any further. There are more men here now – five or so of them, dotted around the room. There are two in the corner, both tall and broad and a lot older than the one you met before, and they turn to look at you when you arrive.
You see them utter something to each other – they’re too far away for you to hear, but they make sure to keep themselves quiet anyway and it sets your teeth on edge.
“Hey, darlin’, what’s up?” One of them, the taller of the two, calls over to you. The rest of the men turn to look at you when he does, and if you didn’t feel like a deer in headlights before, you certainly do now. 
You scan the room and you know how wide-eyed and nervous you must look. There are six men in total; in the other corner, you see the one who took your keys earlier on.
You wonder who you spoke to on the phone.
One of them, whose hair you recognise from when you left, is the youngest. He’s maybe a couple years older than you at most, and unlike the rest of them he isn’t sneering at you, or smiling at all, actually. If anything, he’s looking at you with eyes as wide as you think yours are.
“I’m here to get my car,” you declare, not sure exactly to whom you should be speaking. You direct it vaguely at the guy who acknowledged you, who's walking over to you with a smug smile that turns your stomach.
“What kinda car was it?” He’s stood right in front of you now, too close for comfort, and you have to crane your neck up to look him in the eye.
When you answer his question he chuckles, shaking his head slightly. You’re not sure what’s funny.
“Yeah, yeah, follow me,” he says through bared teeth. It makes the hairs on your arms stand on end.
He takes you to the office where he roots in a box for your keys. As he hands them to you he places his hand on your lower back and guides you out of the office and back through the garage. His head is hanging low, mouth by your ear, and he’s telling you in a low, somewhat theatrical voice that there’s nothing wrong with your car, and that it’s okay, girls like you make these mistakes sometimes.
“Don’t worry, darlin’, we won’t charge ya.”
He stops walking when you reach the middle of the room. He rounds on you, towering over you in a way that kicks you into a stressed stupor. You’re not sure how to deal with this situation, with a mean man twice your size domineering you like this in a room full of other men who’d likely do the same if given the chance.
Underneath it all, though, there’s an anger simmering lowly. You’ve been driving for a few years now, and you’ve learned a thing or two about cars in that time. It’s unfair that they can be so condescending just because you’re a woman.
You want to fight him on it, argue your case and say that can’t be true, you haven’t looked properly, I know what I’m talking about. But you don’t – or can’t. You’re left speechless, mouth opening and closing like a stupid fish out of water.
And then he laughs at you. It’s not like the snide chuckle from earlier; this is a full laugh, laced with cruelty and condescension. And as he does, he looks up and around the room, and the other men laugh with him. You’re trapped in a room filled with misogynists who are all laughing at you.
“Cut it out, guys.”
His voice cuts across the room like a gunshot. It’s irritated and cold but you recognise it as the one you heard down the phone. You turn to look at where it came from and find the younger man stalking miserably toward you.
His hair is wild, you notice. Even when he’s upright and not laid flat under a car, it seems to have a life of its own. He’s tall, though he has nothing on the guy stood beside you, and the arms of his boiler suit are tied around his waist to reveal a filthy white t-shirt. When his eyes meet yours they soften irresistibly and suddenly you feel the desire to run begin to dissipate.
As he reaches you, the laughter starts up again. He stops a few feet away from you, a silent invitation for you to meet him halfway so he doesn’t get as close as the other guy. You do, stepping over to him, and he leans down and says warmly, “Sorry about them.” As he turns toward the door, he adds, “I’ll show you where your car is.”
You follow silently, trying your hardest to tune out the now boisterous and unyielding laughter behind you. He takes you out onto the street, where you see your car parked a couple spaces down, but he stops when you reach the wide doorway and turns to give them a glare.
He looks back at you, where you’re stood with your arms crossed around your middle to guard from the cold, and says, “seriously, I’m sorry ‘bout them. They’re a bunch of assholes.”
You struggle to find words, focus instead taken by the way the orange streetlamp makes his hair glow like the sun.
“Are you okay?” As he asks this, he brings a tentative hand to brush your shoulder, as if to lightly shake you awake.
“Yeah,” you say, voice almost a whisper. “Thanks.”
“Here,” he says, gesturing to where your beaten-up old car is parked lazily by the curb. “I didn’t get a chance to look at it, but if you want…” He hesitates, stumbling a little over his words, a complete contradiction to the white-hot confidence he’d just displayed in the garage.
You look up at him, hoping your face is enough to encourage him to continue. It seems to be, because he meets your gaze again and smiles.
“I can have a look at it for you, if ya want. Not here,” he adds quickly. “You can bring it to my place. Only if you want, of course.”
His politeness and the extension of completely unnecessary kindness feeds a warmth that spreads from your scalp down your spine. You beam up at him, and attempt to soothe what you think are his nerves by saying, “that’s really kind of you, thank you.”
“Okay, just, uh… I’ll get your number from the book if that’s cool.” You nod your head at him a little too enthusiastically.
“Oh,” you gasp, realising you have no idea who this man really is. “I’m y/n.”
“Nice to meet you, y/n,” he says with a grin that’s got none of the artificial flavour of the man you saw this morning, and you realise he knew your name already because he's the one who called you. You feel a familiar heat travel up your neck and spread across your cheeks, but he just chuckles at you. “’M Eddie.”
“Eddie,” you repeat in a breath.
He walks you to your car, which is approximately fifteen steps, but the gesture spreads that warmth even further. He’s handsome and kind and he’s going to fix your car for you; what’s not to like? 
“Thanks again,” you say quietly as you open the driver side door. You stand inside it for a moment and look at him. He’s looking back with a lopsided smile and you can’t help but admire his big brown eyes and the dimples in his cheeks.
“Sure thing, sugar,” he slurs in response, taking the top of the door and opening it wider for you to slide in. Your eyes flicker to the chain around his neck and then the thick silver rings on three of his slender fingers. They make a metallic clink when his hand grips the frame of the door.
You get in, and he leans down to say, “see ya soon,” before shutting the door for you.

Does Time Lord hair style itself? When Ten, Tentoo and Fourteen appear, his hair already seems to have gel in it.
What gives?!?!
Does Time Lord hair style itself on regeneration?
Ooo, there's the golden question! We have no factual answer for this, so we're back to the world of theories.
🌟 Leading theory: Regenerative Coating
What if Time Lords regenerate with a protective coating similar to vernix caseosa that newborn humans have? This Gallifreyan vernix could be nutrient-rich and imbued with artron energy, setting the hair in a position during the regenerative process before absorbing and leaving the hair looking like it's styled with hair gel. Is that gross or not? Can't decide.

As well as hairstyle, it could also account for the period of 'moulding' after regeneration, where tiny physical details can change, and answer why getting your hand chopped off by an angry Sycorax doesn't make Gallifreyan bleed or scar through its intense healing properties and tag-teaming with lindos.
🔬 Sub-theory 1: Microscopic Lindos Manipulation
We know that Gallifreyans have lindos, a type of stem cell, for regenerative and healing processes. What if their hair follicles are packed with specialised lindos that can "remember" a default or even a preferred hairstyle? Upon regeneration, they return the hair to its remembered state or adapt to the Time Lord's new persona.
🪮 Sub-theory 2: Mood-Responsive Hair
Given that Gallifreyan hair can "feel" due to the denser keratin and higher nerve density, what if it's also sensitive to the emotional state of the Time Lord? Imagine a scenario where the hair can tighten or loosen its curl, straighten or puff up, all based on what it "senses" its Time Lord is feeling. Bad companion breakup? Hair tightens. Just saved the universe? Effortless wave. This hair has more drama than a soap opera, and I'm here for it. Far less plausible of course, but also very fun.

Good Omentober Day 16 - Eden
Prompt by @disaster-dog
The ineffable husbands remember the day they met. They have memorised everything in vivid detail, down to their feelings in the moment. Shame it took them millennia to admit to it.

The warm grass underbelly was a comfort to Crawley as he slithered up the twisting tree. The branches were reaching out, practically begging for the humans to indulge in their sweet fruit.
Crawley wrapped his scaled form around the trunk and watched as the woman approached and gripped the fruit in her hand.
“Yesssss, just like that~” He hissed.
The serpent was surprised at how easy temptation was. Going from moulding stars and galaxies to playing mind games with humans was a bit of a culture shock but there was some blackened part of his heart that loved it. 
After he finished playing with the humans, he slithered up the wall where there seemed to be some bright strike of white waiting for him. His serpentine body scaled the wall and he shifted right as he reached the top, wanting to get the best look at this wonder.
 He paused for a moment, looking out over the horizon at the gathering storm.��
“Well, that went down like a lead balloon.”
From that point, the demon’s conversation was on auto-pilot as he inspected the angel. It was time to indulge himself, the biggest temptation was right in front of him after all. His white hair was perfectly curled and despite the worry all over his face, he could see the undeniable cherubic nature all over him. His eyes were the most fantastic shade and for a moment, Crawley could almost remember what it was like to stare at the stars. The white robes left something to be desired, mostly on account of the fact that Crawley wanted to feast on every perfect curve of the angel’s body but he was content to just gaze at the glorious wings folded up behind him without a single feather out of place.
He was perfect.
Angels had to be, of course but this was something new. Despite all the wars and the fighting and the turbulence up above, he felt pure. Properly pure, not the kind of purity they spoon feed the archangels.
There was a sinking feeling that this angel was going to cause him a lot of trouble one day.

“Hey angel, do you remember when we met?” The demon asked absently, his hand resting on the angel’s chest. They were having a lazy morning, laying in bed and neither of them particularly wanted to move.
The angel hummed and stroked Crowley’s hair, before adding, “I remember there was a dashing demon named Crawley who made me feel better. I remember that he was a glorious serpent. The original tempter.”
“You always told the story better than I could.”

“Here you go, take this flaming sword. Don't thank me. And don't let the sun go down on you here,” The angel assured, gently placing his hand on the small of the mother’s back to guide her outside of the garden’s walls. 
As he perched on top of the wall he felt a heaviness in his chest. He was watching the young family venture off into the desert and it was getting hard to believe he did the right thing. There was a gathering storm and Aziraphale hoped the couple would find some shelter before the first rains set in. 
There was a wily black serpent making its way up the wall and the angel, despite being in awe of all of God’s creations, was surprised to see how large the serpent of Eden truly was. The serpent transformed into the most graceful demon, standing tall with magnificent auburn hair, fluttering in the breeze. Aziraphale hadn’t been around many demons but if they were all like this, he wasn’t sure he’d be able to cope.
He’d heard a lot about the war. He was quick to side with the archangels but he simply couldn’t understand why there was a fight in the first place. All of the angels wanted to help with the Almighty’s plan, Aziraphale was sure of it, but that should never have led to such a brutal war.
Aziraphale, like most angels, was aware that there were some Fallen and they should avoid them at all costs but he felt unresolved. He felt like he should’ve at least remembered some of the Fallen but he couldn’t remember a single name. Heaven did feel a little emptier after the war, though.
With Crawley though, it felt right. His golden eyes, although snakelike, felt familiar, like staring into the starry skies at night. His red hair should’ve been a big warning sign to stop, get away, but the longer Aziraphale looked, it felt more like an invitation. His skin was flawless and the angel couldn’t help but memorise each curve and line that graced the demon’s features. He was a work of art.
Temptations were a demon’s specialty, Aziraphale thought. He simply couldn’t give in to the heinous sin of lust, regardless of how radiant the demon in front of him looked in the dying sunlight.
“I do hope I didn't do the wrong thing…” Aziraphale sighed softly as the young family had all but disappeared into the distance.
And like some kind of saviour, the demon swooped in with the perfect thing to say, “Oh, you're an angel. I don't think you can do the wrong thing.”
A weight was released off Aziraphale’s chest and he took a moment to just appreciate the sight. The gorgeous amber hues, how the hints of red and orange just melted perfectly together. God’s most perfect creation.
The sunset, of course. He was talking about the sunset.

“I wish we could tell that story more often,” Crowley whined, his face buried in the crook of his partner’s neck.
Aziraphale twirled one of Crowley’s curls gently before humming, “Well if you find people who are accepting of a gay couple older than Jesus then maybe then we can tell the story.”
Crowley whinged further but he knew Aziraphale was right. He’d just have to be happy with reminiscing like this, curled up under a quilted comforter next to the one person who could relate to him. 
The angel placed a small kiss on the demon’s head and brushed some hair away from his face, “You look so pretty like this, my dear.”
The demon’s face flushed red, almost as bright as his hair, “I dunno what you’re talking about. ‘M not pretty.”
“You’re right,” the angel agreed, “You’ve been absolutely gorgeous since the day I met you.”

She should've disposed of this leaflet two years ago. Eufthem is rarely impressed by the lurching, near-instantaneous turnover of the instructional catalogs. By the time she returns to Earth, there will no doubt be a new one. Maybe two new ones; meta-history that will eventually become relegated to sheer drudgery: required reading for some reason. Just so she knows the correct method of not doing the salute. Regardless, she flips through the battered little pamphlet for the tenth time that day, pretending there is some nuance or tiny detail that only she has the eyes to pick up. Something that'll blow the truth of this 'voyage' wide open.
Step 1: Left hand over your right chest. Right hand stretched out and perpendicular to yourself.
Eufthem follows the instructions. Right hand out, left hand over the chest. She has no choice, really. The actual recommended reading bookcase is out of the reach of the auto-throne. For months, she's had to make do with the pitiful scraps of non-fiction she'd brought over to the throne before even landing on Thiterra-III. That, and the report typewriter, which she's made barely-legal use of and written three quarters of a novel inside of. She reminds herself that she'll need to delete it.
Step 2: Make a small circle with your third and fourth fingers, by touching them to the tip of your thumb.
Eufthem wonders, whilst looking at the illustration just beneath the instruction; how will the salute have changed? It's been three-point-six years since her departure. Since then, the upper brass could have moulded this semi-elegant little salute beyond recognition. The flightpath part is non-negotiable, but beyond that, it's free game. Perhaps the flightpath will be made with just the first finger and thumb. Perhaps it'll be done with your other hand. Eufthem already feels the aching in her muscle memory.
Step 3: Bring your right arm around, keeping the flightpath salute stationary at all times. Once your hand has reached your left shoulder, snap to attention.
Eufthem likes to think she's quite good at this part, as little as it matters. She brings her hand around slowly, almost hypnotically, letting her outstretched fingers trail behind the hand like they're being dragged through clay. She snaps to attention, waits a moment, and then snickers as she hears the OK light on her Ventorer allspec suit flash to green with a little ding!. For the tenth time today, she is lauded with soundless applause. Congratulations, Eufthem.
Step 4: UNTO YOUR GLORIOUS RETURN, VENTORER!
Eufthem can't quite manage this part. It always dredges up memories of her own departure. Her own 'glorious return'. Three-point-six years ago; when she, too, was the brave hero being sent off to check Thiterra-III for it's habitability. When she was dumped into this cramped shuttle, patted on the back, and jumped into a wormhole. At least there'd been a feast beforehand. It'd been fun, before the utter boredom of it all had set in. Mind-melting routine, burnt into the brain like the glow of snow-plains. The Qualli corporation hadn't even seen fit to deck out the shuttle with a cryo-unit - only three months! You'll be fine! In their defense, Eufthem had gotten very good at minesweeper.
Finally, though, Eufthem can set this leaflet aside. Not just set it aside; straight up throw it - punt it - across the shuttle's deck floor. She can use it to vent just an ounce of her own frustration. The leaflet pauses in mid-air, robbed of all of it's momentum all of a sudden, and then drops to the floor as the intra-shuttle grav systems remember what they're supposed to be doing. Eufthem herself is sick for a moment as her every cell cycles through the least-offensive hundred degrees of temperature, worms about for a moment, and then settles down. An entire backflip, whilst sitting still. If she hadn't been hooked into the auto-throne, it's bio-control systems wouldn't have been there to quell anything. She'd have puked onto the floor, and maybe passed out, face-down on the puddle she'd just created. Green check-lights wink in sequence, sending their light down, across the insides of the shuttle like a runway. WORMHOLE CLOSED. DISEMBARKATION BEGINNING.
Forget the auto-throne. Eufthem is sick this time, as anxiety peaks across her body. It almost begins, as the foreign chemicals rooted in her gut giggle and obsess over the adrenaline they've suddenly been blessed with. It is also promptly cut off, as three times as much norepinephrine arrives to attack it. Eufthem calms down so very much that she almost forgets what she needs to do next. Her neurons are blitzed with by the conflicting need to do everything all at once, and go back to sleep.

The Mimic

"I started out as a ghost writer," Loretta began. "Well, I was a baby, first of all - something smaller, even earlier, you might argue. A zygote? But, yes, professionally speaking, ghost writing was my first real job. That's what you're after, right?"
"Yes - by all means, let's speak professionally." Rosalba said coldly, her pen still poised and ready to begin, her notepad not yet troubled by its nib. "But that doesn't answer the question."
"Last night, I know, I know," her subject replied; clearly used to being paid by the word. "I'm just giving some background - a bit of flavour, you know? I'm sure in medias res is all the rage when it comes to writing an engaging article, but I'm a novelist in speech as much as type, and there's nothing wrong with a bit of chronology. I'd always want to start at the start, with the origin story, rather than saving it for a prequel that might never come. Now, if you wouldn't mind humouring me for just a minute-"
"Sorry," Rosalba interrupted, without a hint of apology on her lips, "but what exactly do you think this is?"
"You said you wanted an interview?"
"Yes, in connection with the death of Mr Angus McIntyre."
"Oh, yes, such a a tragedy, I adored The Death List." Realising the shift in tone, Loretta paused, confused as to her interviewer's aim. "So wait, was all of that not true? Why else would you be here?"
"I'm here to interview you with the police." Detective Rosalba Gutiérrez paused, already exhausted. "Are you saying you thought that would make a magazine want to profile you? About someone else's death?"
"Well, sorry if that comes across as narcissistic," Loretta said. "I don't get much publicity, you see. I'm used to working in the shadows."
Rosalba nodded. Many murderers were.
"It's just likely that the sequels will come to me. Everything else does, right? It's a famous series, unfinished, and obviously the publishers would like to keep it going. I've worked with them before. There's no deal in place yet, of course, but I wouldn't be surprised if someone asked me about it."
That was the rest of her backstory. Loretta had started out as a ghost-writer, knocking out autobiographies for a handful of minor celebrities, where 'auto' meant they sometimes briefed her in the car. She'd learnt to write a simile in another woman's shoes, talk in her voice, consider how her upbringing might impact her use of this word or that. She knew the weight of birthplace, class and education, Oxford commas and Newcastle full stops.
She'd been very good at it. After the first few attempts, Loretta had made quite a name for herself within the industry, even if she always used another nom de plume. It transpired that she had a spectacular gift for mimicry. Most budding writers worked until they found their own style, but Loretta had soon discovered that she none: instead, she bore an uncanny ability to imitate others. She was an impressionist, a mould, a mirror. A lexical chameleon.
But when imitating living writers, for all her talent as vernacular ventriloquist, Loretta's role was limited. Her skills served only to write on their behalf; or, when they turned her down, she won her revenge in producing knock-off versions in their style, or cutting parodies which captured them in their entirety. But even that felt like a poor part to play, when she could just wait to take over the whole thing.
It had been a publisher's idea. She had been ghost-writing a series for a TV actor turned 'author', who had turned their hand to writing for one-and-a-half novels before growing bored and moving on, when they'd suddenly passed away in a freak golfing accident. They'd suggested she finish the manuscript she'd been working on at the time, to be published posthumously, and she'd tried to wrap up the series as best she could.
But it had done incredibly well, and had fans weeping in the knowledge there were no sequels to come, no resolution of this arc or that, the death of a series inspiring as many mourners as the passing of the man whose name was on the cover. The publishing house had taken one look at such an untapped well of raw demand, and decided it would be a shame to close up shop just yet: they'd suggested she 'take over' the books as an up-and-coming author, as others had done for bestselling series before.
The rest was history. Those who'd worked with Loretta on other projects knew her way with other people's words, and she started to be hired to finish series she'd never worked on before, with the ability to write them in exactly the style of the original. She was the one they turned to when an author died, to keep the ink and the revenue flowing. To take up their pen, and sometimes their mantle, at the appropriate juncture, after a suitable pause to grieve - and sometimes not even that.
In literature, as in film, it was seen that the show must always go on - the studios weren't above recasting the lead with a lookalike to finish the job, and now publishing houses could do the same. Loretta was still a ghost writer, in a way, but now in the sense that the author whose characters she wore, whose flourishes she took up as her own, were the ghosts; and she the living vessel, channelling their spirit, her typewriter guided as fingers tracing on a Ouija board.
She became them like never before; Loretta trained herself to be a method actor, to read only her subject's words, to write only her facsimiles. She learnt all that she could about their lives, their influences - her works had to capture some part of their departed essence, every line a eulogy, a final testament. It was more pressured, this way. Not only were they not around to proof-read the result, to correct any mis-steps, but she bore the weight of their souls on her conscience. She had to do them justice.
Sometimes the families helped her with fidelity, able to share that precious background, other correspondence, and read through her first draft. Sometimes, to Loretta's surprise, she found herself able to help them in return: they read her books and heard their loved one's voice beyond the grave, a sense of humour they'd forgotten, all of those little remarks and idiosyncrasies that brought them for a moment back to life.
A grief-stricken few had asked for more - farewell letters in a husband's hand, a father's missed wedding speech - but Loretta always turned them down. It was one thing keeping the deceased's memory alive, but another to try to replace them, to put words into their mouths beyond the realm of fiction. She could supplant the things they wrote that weren't real, to entwine her lies into theirs, but she would never seek to overwrite their truth.
Her adopted series were widely successful - sometimes more so than the author had been in life - but the fame and fortune increased Loretta's sense of guilt. If she sold more copies than others, she knew, it was only because she scavenged from the shoulder bones of giants. She sometimes felt a sort of graveyard ghoul, leeching the remaining warmth from one host before she moved onto the next. But this was all that she could do. This was what she was best at.
"Exactly," Rosalba said. It wasn't often that a suspect freely admitted their own motive. "That's why I'm here. It strikes me that you had the most to gain from Mr McInytre's death."
"Wait, what? You think he was killed?"
"His car was found at the bottom of a lake near to his home, with his body suspended inside of it. Drowned. The coroner has not yet ruled out suicide, or death by misadventure, but we are treating it as suspicious, yes. Enquiries are ongoing."
"And you came straight to me?"
"Almost," Rosalba said. "We spoke to his publishers first - they were upset at losing their golden goose, and seemingly had no motive to wish Mr McIntyre dead. We asked them for a list of potential alternatives, and your name came up. On top of the list, as it happens. Shall I ask the question again?"
"Sorry," Loretta said, feeling her way into the detective's exhausted, matter-of-fact tone, as if trying a new jacket on for size. "But I'm going to need a little more information. You've only spoken to the publishers, who you think have the all clear, before me? Other than the coroner, and your colleagues, is there anybody else who is aware of Mr McIntyre's death?"
"Well, the killer, presumably." Rosalba shifted in her seat, clearly discomfited by the shift in her suspect's tone, like the distorted echo from the bottom of a well. People didn't tend to like to hear their own reflection. "Unless you're including them in that group of people, in which case I'm interested to know where."
"Are you sure about that?" Loretta continued. "I mean, think about it. A car pushed into a lake. If one of your other suspects did that, could they really know for sure that he had drowned? A miraculous escape is possible, right? Even if they stayed to make sure, he could have held his breath, found a pocket of air, until the rescue arrived. Unlikely, sure, but possible."
"What exactly are you arguing here? That it couldn't be you, because you'd have murdered him more thoroughly?"
"No, it wasn't me. But if you've got your list of suspects, I'd be happy to help you bait out the real killer, if you can keep the death quiet for a few hours more. Just pass me a copy of one of his books, and I'll find a pen and paper."
"Wait - you're going to pretend to be him, and write to each of them, to say what? I know it was you? You won't get away with this?" Rosalba was long since out of her depth. This interview had slipped away from her from the moment she'd stepped foot inside this house. "And hope that they'll believe it's really him?"
"That's right," Loretta said, already searching for her pen. "Haven't you ever resurrected anyone before?"

"The track is partly auto-biographical, with childhood memories of loneliness mixed with those of TV shows. Desperate to escape the confines of a somewhat repressive background, I sought solace in music, strange films and TV.
Anna Home was a kids TV commissioning officer responsible for certain shows which fascinated me, including the series Dramarama. The song's title is taken from one episode which I felt fit the narrative well. I also reference another storyline (Back to Front) which involved a sinister Doppelganger taking over the protagonist's life, leaving them forever trapped inside a mirror looking out onto the world - somehow finding that relatable to my own existence! 😊"

The relationship between consciousness and mind is a complex and debated topic in philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience. While some may equate consciousness with the mind, others argue they are distinct concepts. Consciousness generally refers to being aware of and able to perceive one's surroundings, thoughts, emotions, and experiences. On the other hand, spiritual awareness is the subject or energy force that creates a field of consciousness.
As a result, consciousness becomes the objective of the subject of awareness, which, after emerging from the nondual primordial awareness, the mind becomes conscious of the dualities of this or that. Hence, awareness is primary, and consciousness, being secondary, is dependent on awareness. So, the mind must first become aware and mindful of what it is conscious of.
The mind is an energetic flow of bioelectric processes produced by chemical activity in the brain, transferring information through neural pathways via neurons from one section to another primarily to become conscious - external and internal. The mind is often described as the cognitive faculties that enable consciousness, perception, feelings, thinking, judgment, language, memory, and imagination. It's that aspect of a person that permits a human mind to be aware and conscious of the world for its outer and inner experiences.

Impulsivity is a natural part of the brain that functions with feelings, thoughts, and actions to act on a notion or urge without considering its consequences, forethought, or reflection.
While some scientists and philosophers argue that consciousness emerges from complex brain functions, others propose that consciousness might be one of the universe's essential components. The relationship between consciousness and the mind still needs to be fully understood, and different theories exist regarding whether they are related or are essentially one unified field. Science requires verification of its claims, but philosophy is always open to speculative theorization, after which science takes over.
The brain is the receiver and transmitter, capturing information from outside, detecting and determining through mental faculties to decode what it cognitively captures. Consciousness is the aliveness responsible for creating unique individuality through various cognitive and aware, conscious abilities available through your mind to the brain. Consciousness also culminates all mental processes, including paying attention, thinking, feeling, remembering, reasoning, and judging. It includes a diverse range of cognitive, emotional, social, and unconscious factors that, when combined, mould our behaviour and objective experiences into every individual's unique identity.
On the other hand, awareness arises only when the mind is alert; consciousness results from its cumulative attention to what the mind has observed. The mind uses intellect (past knowledge borrowed from various sources) and intelligence (new, spontaneous comprehension) to experience and realize after selecting what it wishes to procure for what it desires. Mind and consciousness are synonymous since they are mutually interactive with each other. The mind cannot exist without consciousness since we are only considered awake when conscious; otherwise, we are in a coma.
All studies begin and agree with the assumption that consciousness arises from brain activity, but opinions differ on how consciousness is produced and how to address the issue effectively. The initial state of pure consciousness is choiceless and spontaneous, without any other brain faculty interfering with its operation. It is entirely nondual and natural and equivalent to the intensity of individual awareness. Suppose the mind is attentive after becoming aware of the present moment. In that case, it will attach itself to cognitive faculties and become conscious either of this or that in duality relatively opposite of, say, positive/negative, happiness/sadness, divine/devil, etc.
The mind, after that, uses its memories to operate in auto-mode from past awareness, dissipating into lower or subconscious past awareness, negating the need for fresh aware inputs. Say, if you have consciously learnt how to drive a car, the subconscious takes over in auto mode, and the actions of the mind quickens. The subconscious is the storehouse of past awareness in our memory. It utilizes approximately 95% of the mind, processing millions of bits of information thousands of times faster than the conscious section. So, the subconscious runs our material life, but not the spiritual. Material life consumes over 99% of our mental activity. Hence, the Earth is in a disaster today, where we, the potentially divine creatures, are destroying more than we create. We create to destroy.
Energy, the substance of all existences, characterizes itself by cyclically vibrating in different frequencies—the process involves the creation, preservation, and destruction of all that exists for it to recreate again. In our case, the powerful subconscious in lower consciousness is responsible for gradually destroying land, sea, and air ecosystems. The fabric of life we depend on is being destroyed by wars and polluted by excessive exploitation, causing life on Earth to disappear. Due to the imbalance between the material and the spiritual, the Second Law of Thermodynamics rightly emphasizes that energy moves in entropy, which means disorderly.
Likewise, our subconscious thoughts move randomly, recklessly, and repeatedly in a disorderly manner, multitasking to accumulate quickly more and more selfishly. We, the most superior species amongst all living creatures, are the biggest destroyers. To balance the same, we desperately need spiritual clarity, contentment, and comprehension to preserve, experience, and realize our required stability.
Thus, the human mind is either spiritually conscious or exceedingly subconscious while awake; otherwise, it is inactive in deep sleep and partially active in dream sleep. I reiterate that the conscious mind awakens the soul to reason, focus, and concentrate on the present moment. Hence, it is slow but qualitative, forming a unique individuality. The subconscious is the part of the mind that processes information fastest and retrieves data from the memory bank. It is the master programme designed for your material needs to make you 'what you are' - quantitatively controlled by your emotional desires to form your personality (persona- a false mask in Greek).
In Indic scriptures, we have two more states. 'Turiya' is a state in which consciousness transcends beyond the needs of the body and mind in selflessness in its purest spiritual form, where all dualities vanish. The illusion of separateness unites into its wholesomeness of nothing – 'Shunyata', from which everything appears to disappear back into its fold. Mahatma Gandhi is a shining example of a person who rigorously practised this procedure through selfless deeds. Beyond that, we have the 'Turiyatitta' state where the individual soul immerses into the total universal awareness as the spirit, a heightened state of interconnectedness with the universe, through which the Rishis of prehistoric years were able to telepathically receive information from the cosmos on which Vedic science today establishes itself.
Therefore, there are various theories relating to the nature of the mind. These range from philosophical to scientific theories trying to unravel the neural mechanisms underlying mental processes carrying what we consider as information or knowledge. No one seems to know clearly where the mind acquires all the initial information it receives from its observatory power to evaluate and enumerate.
The foundation for mental activity begins in the womb. The brain starts forming neural connections with the sense organs to capture sensory experiences of touch, taste, smell, sight, and sound. The mind begins by perceiving one's surroundings and internal mental state since these provide the raw material for perception and cognition to make sense of the world around them. The mind then captures aware energy from the outside, deciphers, reasons, understands and experiences sensory information through neural connections via neurons. All this requires the mind first to become aware and, after that, conscious, followed by the subconscious, for that totality of which the mind revolves in every living creature; otherwise, it can neither operate nor exist.
Therefore, the mind and consciousness are synonymous. It is that flow of psychic energy-carrying aware information that the brain perceives from the outside and the inside, depending on the intensity of how alert any individual mind is in every living creature. The suffix "ness" signifies the intensity of awareness, consciousness, and uniqueness, creating distinct characteristics in all living beings. Hence, consciousness is the supreme faculty of the mind, which forms the mind to configure "what you are – quantitatively" to build upon the growth of your body and mind.
However, the mind nor its thoughts are who you are since you claim the body, mind, and its thoughts - conscious or otherwise, as 'yours', meaning they belong to you. You can observe, read, and introspect your mind through your super-conscious mind at any moment, for you are the spirit in spiritual beingness going through human experiences but are generally unaware of the same. The subconscious mind in lower consciousness will not agree in the same way unless the individual mind transcends and balances the material and the spiritual life to fulfil its life in wholesomeness.
This lower state of mind is what we spiritually refer to as lower or sub-conscious. It occurs when the mind is subconsciously aware of the past through its five sense organs, forming its memories, desires, and thoughts to make decisions through the brain after analyzing and evaluating the database for its self-interest. However, when the individual mind is aware and conscious, it is in the moment. The mind is calm, quiet, centred, composed, relaxed, observant, and attentive. Hence, the mind can be said to be simultaneously present and alert when conscious, but it needs to be aware first. So, in conclusion, consciousness is the culmination of mental acumen that can focus on one task at a time, centred and balanced in the present moment. Subconscious lower awareness, on the other hand, can operate on multiple tasks simultaneously, particularly when material desires exceed spiritual ones, and your wants are more selfish than selfless. Unfortunately, the subconscious mind generally consumes over 90% of the mind, for which human behaviour today is greedier to get more out of life than to give what it owes to Mother Nature.
